To the Class of 1967: Education is a life-long process. One lesson I hope you have learned at Durfee is that you are all individuals. As an individual you create a certain influence on people with whom you work and play. If you are the type who has a grudge against the world and is looking for trouble then trouble is all you can expect. The person who has many friends undoubtedly does much to promote friendliness. The climate of your personal life will depend to a great extent on what you want that climate to be. You are a member of a so-called “Great Society” in which education is hopefully being brought within the reach of all. But one phase of that opportunity may become distorted and out of focus. Education should be regarded as a privilege and not a right. Privileges should be earned, not awarded indiscriminately. Those of you who worked so diligently at Durfee earned the privilege to go on to higher education and the opportunity to learn more. Others of you were concerned with other pursuits and neglected the opportunities offered and are now faced with decisions which will force you into various lines of endeavor. But, as I said in the beginning, education is a life-long process and it is never too late to start. I know the majority of you would admit that your happiest days were spent at Durfee and if you were given the opportunity to start all over you would in all probability do exactly the same things. However, I hope you will all bear in mind that the future is unpredictable. This year is not the end but the beginning of an entirely new world for you. May your prospects be bright and please accept my best wishes for a long and purposeful future. Principal

To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1967 of the B. M. C. Durfee High School: Permit me to extend my heartiest congratulations on this, the occasion of your graduation from B. M. C. Durfee High School. Let me add my very best wishes for your success in life and the true realization of your best hopes. You now join other Durfee graduates who have the highest standards of self-disci- pline and responsibility. The truth can make us free. Knowledge can make us strong self-reliant men and women who know how to live and work together, or knowledge can lead us to the enslavement of free men by clever manipulation. Knowledge in itself can be misused by ruthless and unprincipled men, and in the hands of the undisciplined, can lead to chaos. Knowledge needs the direction of self-disciplined men who know the meaning of responsible freedom. B. M. C. Durfee High School has been more than a purveyor of knowledge. It has provided an opportunity for boys and girls to think boldly and creatively. As you approach the freedom of our modern age—as free men, you must assume greater self- discipline. B. M. C. Durfee High School has, through the years, intensified its efforts to develop in children and youth the intellectual and moral self-discipline needed by youth for main- taining and extending our democratic way of life. It has been pin-pointed for you—this emphasis on an ever-increasing share of responsibility for your own conduct. Our beloved Durfee, in partnership with your home, your church, and your City of Fall River, has helped you to re-create in your lives the basic values of respect for law—self-discipline —and morality that are the very foundation of a society of free men. WELCOME TO THIS SOCIETY! Superintendent of Schools
