To Mr, Joseph Lawlor, in recognition of his unfaltering devotion to his profession and to the students of B.M.C. Durfee High School, the Class of 1967 proudly dedicates this Record Book. We accord Mr. Lawlor our respect for his wisdom, and our admiration for his understanding and toler- ance of youth. He has unselfishly given his time and effort as Coordinator for Visual Aids and as Faculty Treasurer of Athletics. Indeed, we owe much for his services. So it is with deep esteem that we dedicate this book, which we expect to treasure all our lives, to one who has been an outstanding educator as well as a friend to the student body. Dewsnap, Senior Clerk-Stenographer Anna C, Harrington, Senior Clerk-Stenographer Olga Hordovitch, Clerk-Stenographer Kathryn Lenehan, Clerk Barbara J. Coriaty, Junior Clerk-Stenographer To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1967 of the B. M. C. Durfee High School: Permit me to extend my heartiest congratulations on this, the occasion of your graduation from B. M. C. Durfee High School. Let me add my very best wishes for your success in life and the true realization of your best hopes. You now join other Durfee graduates who have the highest standards of self-disci- pline and responsibility. The truth can make us free. Knowledge can make us strong self-reliant men and women who know how to live and work together, or knowledge can lead us to the enslavement of free men by clever manipulation. Knowledge in itself can be misused by ruthless and unprincipled men, and in the hands of the undisciplined, can lead to chaos. Knowledge needs the direction of self-disciplined men who know the meaning of responsible freedom. B. M. C. Durfee High School has been more than a purveyor of knowledge. It has provided an opportunity for boys and girls to think boldly and creatively. As you approach the freedom of our modern age—as free men, you must assume greater self- discipline. B. M. C. Durfee High School has, through the years, intensified its efforts to develop in children and youth the intellectual and moral self-discipline needed by youth for main- taining and extending our democratic way of life. It has been pin-pointed for you—this emphasis on an ever-increasing share of responsibility for your own conduct. Our beloved Durfee, in partnership with your home, your church, and your City of Fall River, has helped you to re-create in your lives the basic values of respect for law—self-discipline —and morality that are the very foundation of a society of free men. WELCOME TO THIS SOCIETY! Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1967: Education is a life-long process. One lesson I hope you have learned at Durfee is that you are all individuals. As an individual you create a certain influence on people with whom you work and play. If you are the type who has a grudge against the world and is looking for trouble then trouble is all you can expect. The person who has many friends undoubtedly does much to promote friendliness. The climate of your personal life will depend to a great extent on what you want that climate to be. You are a member of a so-called “Great Society” in which education is hopefully being brought within the reach of all. But one phase of that opportunity may become distorted and out of focus. Education should be regarded as a privilege and not a right. Privileges should be earned, not awarded indiscriminately. Those of you who worked so diligently at Durfee earned the privilege to go on to higher education and the opportunity to learn more. Others of you were concerned with other pursuits and neglected the opportunities offered and are now faced with decisions which will force you into various lines of endeavor. But, as I said in the beginning, education is a life-long process and it is never too late to start. I know the majority of you would admit that your happiest days were spent at Durfee and if you were given the opportunity to start all over you would in all probability do exactly the same things. However, I hope you will all bear in mind that the future is unpredictable. This year is not the end but the beginning of an entirely new world for you. May your prospects be bright and please accept my best wishes for a long and purposeful future. Principal HALL OF FAME Ten Highest Ranking Seniors JENNIFER C. HOP ELAINE M. M. C. Durfee High School, died in a tragic automobile accident in Newport, Rhode Island, on April 25, 1967. Nancy was Co-Captain of the Pep Squad during her junior and senior years. As a senior, she was a member of the Business Club and served as an office aide. A loss such as this is incapable of being measured in words. Nancy’s memory will linger on, however, in the minds of all who knew her, because she reflected the ideals of a true Durfeeite. MISS HELEN J. TRIPP Miss Helen J. Tripp, French instructor at Durfee for the past nine years, passed away on Friday, March 24, 1967, after a short illness. Miss Tripp formerly taught at Westport High School and from 1959 to 1963 was the librarian at the Westport Free Public Library. The students of Durfee join with the faculty in offering their sympathy to the family of Miss Tripp. Miss Tripp gave unselfishly of herself during her years at Durfee, Certainly such dedication will be long remembered by all. Durfee High School for the first time. It was startling at first to find ourselves a part of all the hurry and excitement that is always present in a large school. However, before long we acquired the glorious feeling of being Hilltoppers with the privi- lege of learning and also taking part in the many activities. The football season started with a bang when the Hilltoppers romped over New Bedford Vocational, 40 to 0. Throughout the fall this great team continued to play their best, bringing pride to the school and to their classmates. On Thanksgiving Hay our football team won a glorious vic- tory over New Bedford High, thus ending an impresssive season with seven wins and two losses. In December our class elections were held. Bulletin boards were clut- tered with brightly colored posters and clever slogans, vividly expressing the keen competition. On election day those chosen to serve our class were Dorothy Ayer, president; Alfred Simbro, vice-president; Jo-Anne Lyons, class secretary; Anne Donnelly, secretary of the S.A.A.; and Jo-EUen Lyons and Donald Bedrick, SAA councillors. With the month of December came the start of the basketball season. With excellent teamwork and spirit the Durfee team captured the Bristol County League Championship which brought them to the state finals. There, unfortunately, the Catholic Memorial team held an enormous height advantage, and the Hilltoppers were defeated but, as an outstanding team, retained the pride of the school. Two more Bristol County League Championships were awaiting the Hilltoppers that year. In the spring the track team and the baseball team were victorio u s. When report cards came out for the third time, ten members of our class had achieved All-A honors and seventy-six had made the Principals List, By the end of the year we realized that Durfee’s students were cer- tainly making a name for themselves, for they were outstanding in dra- matics, in music and in scholarship as well as in sports. 96 As juniors, we were finally recognized as upper classmen for now our home rooms were located in the Durfee building! Dorothy Ayer again led as our class president with Alfred Simbro, vice-president; Linda Sherman, secretary; Jo-Ellen Lyons and Henry Mac- earoon, SAA councillors; Anne Donnelly, vice-president of the SAA. The football season came in with a big roar but left with a sorrow- ful note—we lost to New Bedford in our traditional Thanksgiving game. However, we had six lettermen plugging for us that year, John Azevedo, Carl Fitzgerald, Tom Doyle, Tom Botelho, Joe Roque and Jim Beaulieu. Never in a lifetime could we forget the basketball season of 1965- 66. We won the Bristol County League title, the Tech Tournament title for the first time in 10 years, and triumphantly brought home the State Champs' trophy to Durfee, The Hilltoppers were honored the next day with a parade and a banquet. Ernie Fleming, a junior, was selected Most Valuable Player in the Tech Tournament and Bob Dempsey and Earl Seligman, seniors, shared the George Kaplan Memorial award. Also Nancy Mulcahy and Donna Lifrak were chosen Head Majorette and Head Cheer- leader, respectively. Springtime meant prom time and through the efforts of the prom committee, using Cinderella Ball as their theme, our Junior Prom was a huge success and will long be remembered. Among the honors received by our junior class were the Harvard Book award by Richard Gourse, the Williams' Book award by Peter Lomax, Special English award by Roberta Castro, Competitive History Examination by Bonn Robidoux, Latin Medal by Loretta Caron and the highest ranking Business Education junior was Linda Pomprowicz. The National Honor Society inducted 55 junior members and many students received deltas and certificates at the awards assembly in June. The tra- ditional Founders' Day assembly for juniors brought to mind a nostalgic but exciting fact—we were now approaching our last and most important year of all. 97 SEI September 1966! As the leading class of Durfee High, we elected Dorothy Ayer, president; Alfred Simbro, vice-president; Linda Sherman, secretary; Ann Donnelly, president of S.A.A.; and Edmund Borges, president of I-Iome Room Directors. Appointed to head the Durfee Hilltop staff were Carl Zukroff, editor, and Patricia Paulino, business manager. Richard Course was elected delegate for Student Government Day. Dorothy Ayer was chosen to receive the Daughters of American Revo- lution Award. Directing the football team were Co-Captains John Azevedo and Carlton Fitzgerald. Carl Fitzgerald was presented the Jake Reagan Memorial Award and Tom Botelho was awarded the “Unsung Hero” Award at the annual football banquet. New Bedford defeated the Toppers 20 to 14. Jennifer Hop and Pamela Ritz were named the two highest ranking students. Thirteen seniors achieved All-A honors and thirty-six were inducted into National Honor Society. Durfee High majorettes, under the leadership of Nancy Mulcahy, won the first annual cheering competition held bv the Youth Branch of the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation. Durfee Hilltoppers were undefeated in their winning of the Bristol County League Basketball Crown. Although Durfee, the defending champion, lost to Waltham in the first round of Tech Tourney, the Toppers had an amazing season with the aid of Ernie Fleming. Ernie scored a record-breaking 50 points against Taunton. Tom Doyle and Ernie Fleming were co-captains. The cheerleaders and majorettes added much color and enthusiasm to football and basketball games of the year. As this book goes to press, we anticipate Class Day and the day when we are handed our diplomas. As all good things must come to an end, our three marvelous years at Durfee will end with the unforgettable senior prom. Our memories of these happy days will linger with us forever. 98 From left, first row—Janice Costa, Barbara St. Laurent, Nancy Ayer, Linda Sherman Second row—Mary Ann Cunha, Danny Tow Horn, Joy Kenyon, Ann Donnelly, Rosemarie Medeiros, David Perreira, Christine Mikolazyk. STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students1 Activities Association, nucleus of all student activities, is the only organization whose membership is open to all students. The Student Council, its governing body, fosters extra-curricular activities and develops school spirit and leadership. The Student Council is led by President Anne Donnelly, Vice-President Joy Kenyon, and Secretary Rosemarie Medeiros. It also includes presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries, and councilors of all classes, as well as the presidents of clubs, home room directors, and National Honor Society. The SAA membership drive in the Fall was followed by a dance held at the Dwelly Street Armory; the dance featured the “Cowsills,” a top recording group. Dances were held throughout the year under the leadership of the Student Council. Early in December the SAA honored football players, cheerleaders, majorettes, and band members at a banquet. At Christmas time the SAA brightened the school with decorations and conducted a toy drive for the benefit of an orphans1 home. Faculty advisors are Mrs, Joan T. Garfagno and Mr. John Connell. The organization is grateful for the cooperation of Principal Thomas W. Hammond. 100 From left, first row—Robert Green, Patricia Rodrigues, Secretary; Kenneth Hague. AUDIO VISUAL OPERATORS CLUB The Audio Visual Operators Club was organized in order to train students in the operation of audio-visual aids Open to any interested students, the club rendered services about school on a voluntary basis, lending assistance to teachers and their classes. Meetings were held on the first and third Tuesdays of every month under the guidance of Mr. Joseph J. Lawlor. 101 From left—Paulette Remy, Paulette Pratt, Linda Pomprowicz, Diane Luz. BANK CASHIERS Since the banking program started at Durfee, Tuesday has been designated as Bank Day. Believing in the maxim, “Plan for the future today,” students increase their savings on this day each week. Deposits are collected in home rooms during the opening exercises and placed in large envelopes which are delivered to the cashiers in the office of the Durfee building and Technical building. The cashiers, Diane Luz, Linda Pomprowicz, Paulette Pratt, and Paulette Remy, list the amounts deposited by each home room and place the envelopes in specially designed bank bags which are then locked and taken to the B.M.C. Durfee Trust Company by bank agents. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business department, is in charge of high school banking. She works in conjunction with Mr. Robin- son and Miss Ruth Swinburn of the B.M.C. Durfee Trust Company. Prior to graduation, Mr. Joseph Lawlor of the Business Education Department takes charge of transferring accounts of senior students to regular banking accounts. 102 From left—Madeline Perry, Secretary; Linda Pomprowicz, President; Patricia Price, Vice-President. THE BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, whose membership is composed of seniors receiving 70 per cent or better in all four and five period subjects, was organized to acquaint business students with the opportunities available to them and what is expected of them in the business world. The guest speaker at one of the meetings was Mr. Joseph D’Adamo, Vice Principal at Durfee, who spoke on the field of Data Processing. The club also sponsored an assembly for all senior business education girls at which time Mr. Michael C, Cordera, Senior Personnel Specialist, of the Aetna Insurance Company of Hartford, spoke to the girls about employment at the Aetna Company’s offices in Fall River. A successful event held this year was a trip to the Aetna Insurance Company Data Processing Center in Fall River. Mr. Isler, Manager of the center, explained the function of the IBM Keypunch Machine and Verifier used by their company. This system is rapidly becoming an important part in large businesses. After Mr. Isler demonstrated the Keypunch Machine, several girls were allowed to operate it. In addition to regular meetings, the club sponsors the AMS Spelling and Arithmetic Tests, the bank cashiers, typists for the Record Book, office aides, and secretaries to the heads of departments. Officers are President Linda Pomprowicz, Vice-President Patricia Price, and Secretary Madeline Perry. Miss Katherine L, Hogan, head of the business department, is advisor. 103 CHESS CLUB From left—Donn Robidoux, President; Suzanne Mercier, Secretary-Treasurer; Richard Lifrak, Vice-President. CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SOCIETY The purpose of the Contemporary Jazz Society this year is to promote a better interest in modern jazz. We believe that it is essential for everyone to have an interest in music other than rock ’n roll. Modern jazz opens up a whole new world of listening’ pleasure. The first half of the year consisted of playing recordings of various artists in order to acquaint those who have not listened to this type of music, A discussion of the artist’s music followed the playing of each recording. The latter half of the year consisted of workshops, guest speakers, and a live concert. Our advisor is Miss Phyllis PyteL 106 Seated from left—Linda Sherman, Elizabeth Eagan, Susan Levin, Susan Soczek. Standing—Joseph D1 Ambrosio, Harvey Yee, Richard Gourse, Robert Brayton, Michael LeRoy, Steven Yoken, Jonathan Kates, Michael Miller, Paul Berger, Michael Gibbons. THE DEBATING SOCIETY The Debating Society, under the direction of Mr, James Roche, is now finishing one of its most sparkling years in the school’s history. Sparked by the enthusiasm of a diligent membership, the forensic organization can be proud of its recent accomplishments. This year the society sponsored a trip to the Sixth Annual University of Massachusetts High School Debate Tournament and Workshop, November 11-12, 1966, for four of its members. The society is also off to one of its best starts in recent years in the competition of the Narragansett Inter- scholastic Debate League. With such a forceful combination of outstanding cultural and social opportunities, it is no wonder that the Debating Society has been such an outstanding success. 107 From left—Carolyn Rogers, Secretary-Treasurer; Diane Bates, Vice-President: Jennifer Hop, President. Crowley, Miss Barbara J. Leonard became the faculty advisor to the staff. The Hilltop format included school news and many intriguing features. “Would You Believe?” a new satirical column, was introduced by Carla Ross and Elizabeth Blais. Geraldine Manchester, Carol Schenck, Ada Jackson, and Teresa Christo provided the paper with unusual and inter- esting feature stories. The sports staff was composed of James Smith and Edward Malloy, both of whom alternated the authorship of “Sports Spectacular,” a bi- weekly Hilltopper sports critique. In addition, James wras responsible for many of the action photographs that were published. It is composed of students chosen from the senior, junior, and sophomore classes because of their scholastic standing, dependability, cooperation, and general helpfulness. This year the group chose Ada Jackson as President, Marcia Knight as Vice-President, and Jane Sugarman as Secretary-Treasurer. Each morning from seven-forty-five to eight-ten, three or more aides are on duty in the Ambrose F. Keeley Library to issue passes and check returned books. Other members are on duty every period to match passes and carry them to the study halls. Another important feature of this group is the fact that they stand ready to help not only Mrs. Nagle in the library, but also any teacher or student who may need their services. The Library Aides meet on the fourth Monday of every month. Following the business meeting, invited speakers have addressed the members on varied topics. 112 From Left—Danny Greene, President; Louis Howayeck, Vice-President; and Robert Struba, Secretary, MATHEMATICS CLUB The Mathematics Club is an organization whose primary function is to stimulate an interest in mathematics. The graduates of 1967 can look back on the past three years of music as times of hard work, fun, and learning from which they benefited greatly. The annual Opera Sings brought the orchestra and chorus memorable experiences in singing the choruses of “La Traviata,” “Aida,” and “II Trovatore,” in which they also had the opportunity to hear professional soloists take the leading roles. The solemnity and joyousness of Christmas, which has been expressed best by composers over the centuries, was brought into the school when the halls of Durfee echoed with carols sung by the Senior Mixed Chorus. Each concert brought out the instrumental as wrell as the vocal spirit clearly and joyously. Other activities in which the members of the orchestra, band and choruses participated are the Spring Concerts, the Eastern Massachusetts Concert Festivals, and the All-State Concerts. The band has fostered school spirit on our football fields and has appeared in many local parades. The Vocalaires and the Serenaders, who are also members of the choral groups, presented numerous programs for community organizations. One of the programs most likely to be remembered by the groups is the one presented every year at the Brockton Veterans’ Hospital. These groups could not have functioned without the guidance and patience of their directors: Miss Helen L. Ladd, Director of Music, now retired; Miss Frances C. Shaughnessy, Supervisor of Vocal Music; Miss Margaret M. Constantine; Mrs. Irene S. Monte; Mr. George S. Dimock; and Mr. Faust D. Fiore, Director of Music Education, all of whom helped to make the past three years the pleasure they have been. 115 From left—Richard Course, Vice-President; Elizabeth Eagan, Secretary; Joseph D’Ambrosio, President NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society of Durfee, the Mu Kappa Delta Chapter, is composed of juniors elected from the top 5S of their class and seniors chosen from the top 159r of their class. Heading this year’s Phoenix Nest staff are Roger Bouchard, editor-in-chief, and assistant editors Deborah Moore and Patricia Paulino. The National Honor Society also sponsors a tutorial program for students in need of scholastic assistance. More than fifty members offer their services in mathematics, French, Spanish and English. Note: Nancy Carvalho, Co-Captain of the Pep Squad, died on April 25, 1967. Members of the squad feel that Nancy would have wanted the team picture included in the Record Book. 122 SPORTS FOOTBALL Despite injuries and an over-abundance of hard luck, Coach Donald Montle’s football squad compiled a record of five wins against three losses and third place in the Bristol County League for the 1966 season. Excelling all year was a fine, experienced backfield composed of quarterback Tom Botelho, fullback Joe Roque, and halfbacks Tom Doyle and Co-Captain Carl Fitzgerald. Heading the line were seniors Bob Pieri, Co-Captain John Azevedo, Jim Beaulieu, and several promising underclassmen. The season began on a happy note with a Hill topper victory over New Bedford Yoke 42-0 behind Fitzgerald's four touchdowns. In a game filled with a little revenge from last year's loss, the Red and Black next rolled over Attleboro as Botelho-to-Doyle passes picked apart the Jewelers' defenses. However, Bishop Stang ended Durfee's streak by handing the Toppers a 20-8 loss at Alumni Field. It was a frustrating defeat as Durfee failed to come up with the big play time after time. Returning to the victory trail, Durfee beat Taunton 88-0 before suffering the first of two last-second defeats that darkened the '66 season. Leading most of the way, Durfee succumbed to the pin-point passes of Bishop Feehan’s John Shea and were downed in a heartbreaking 27-24 game. North Attleboro suffered as the Hill toppers controlled the ball and won 26-0. Coyle was Durfee's next victim, 42-24, in an exciting offensive show, Doyle scored four touchdowns as the Red and Black finished the BCL season with a 5-2 won-lost record. The Toppers gamely battled a strong New Bedford High team in the Thanksgiving Day classic. However, a desperation pass in the fading seconds clicked for the Whalers who came away on top of a 20-14 score in a thrilling contest. At the annual football banquet, Carl Fitzgerald was presented the Jake Reagan Memorial Award as the team's most valuable player. Quarter- back Tom Botelho was awarded the Coaches' Trophy as the squad’s unsung hero. Tackle John Azevedo received the Lt. Trevisano Trophy as Durfee's lineman of the year. Looking ahead to next year, Lou Silva, Alan Miller, and Joe Roque were elected tri-captains for the 1967 football season. 126 Front, left to right—Russ Booth, Joe Barry, Dave August, Co-Captain Ernie Fleming, Co-Captain Tom Doyle, Dennis Carey, Tom Costa. Back, left to right— George Almeida, Jack Leandro, Lou Silva, Chris Addison, Brian Palmer, Frank Bigos, Kevin Manning, BASKETBALL With just two starters remaining from the 1966 State championship squad, Durfee nevertheless had a fine hoop season. Although the Hill top- pers didn’t retain the state title, they did something a Dnrfee basketball team had not accomplished in almost twenty years, compiling an un- beaten record in the Bristol County League, Coach KaranTs boys started off the season with a victory over Rogers High, but were soon stopped by New Bedford. After a win over Brockton, Durfee entered the first annual Rogers High School Christmas Tournament in Newport, but was once again overcome by New Bedford in a thrilling double-overtime finale, 52-50, The Toppers were invincible for the next fifteen games, reeling off a 14-0 record versus all Bristol County League opponents. The high- lights of the league victories were double wins over Stang and Coyle, and a record-breaking 50 points by Ernie Fleming in a 91-33 romp over Taunton. In the season finale, Durfee took New Bedford to camp 46-44, when Dave August’s last-second shot finally brought satisfaction to the Hilltoppers. Fine performances by Co-Captains Fleming and Tom Doyle could not overcome a brilliant display by Waltham in the opening round of Tech Tournament play in Boston. The upstarts from Waltham put on a fantastic comeback to defeat Durfee 61-56. Throughout the year, Fleming was the key to Durfee's success. Supporting him were Doyle, August, Russ Booth, Dennis Carey, and Joe Barry. This combination of force, plus a strong bench, gave Durfee the commendable overall record of eighteen wins against three losses and an undisputed Bristol County League championship. At the close of the season, Fleming and Doyle were named to the all-BCL team by the Fall River Herald News. In addition, Ernie was awarded the George Kaplan Memorial Trophy, and received numerous honors including a berth on the All-New England Basketball Team. 127 Right: Tom Doyle (35) taps balls in a jump as Russ Booth prepares to catch the ball. Standing—Carol Silvia, Marcia Knight, Adrienne Jamiel and Patricia Re go. CHEERLEADERS Enthusiasm, happiness, tension and heartbreak are all experienced by a Durfee cheerleader. In bright red and black uniforms, the cheerleaders were seen displaying their school spirit at all the football games, basketball games, parades and pep rallies. To qualify for the squad, consisting of four seniors and four juniors, a girl must maintain grades of at least 70. Tryouts are held in the spring of her sophomore year and the final selection of four girls is made by outside judges. A cheerleader is chosen on the basis of ability, personality, voice and pep. She serves on the squad for two years. At the final basketball game the head cheerleader announces her successor, chosen by the four seniors and the adviser, Miss Claire-Marie Hart. This year a new tradition began. Durfee had an additional member on the squad: a sub-cheerleader Patricia Ladeira. This will be carried on through the years since it has proved to be very successful. The football season went by quickly, ending with a heartbreaking loss to New Bedford. The basketball team remained undefeated in the Bristol County League and came out singing: “Boston Garden, Here We Come!” 130 Kneeling from left—Judy Stafford, Nancy Mulcahy, Head Majorette; Andrea Silver, Standing, from left—Celeste Nadien, Joyce Freitas, Kathy Shea, Donna Fairtile and Joy Kenyon. MAJORETTES Majorettes in bright red and black uniforms are seen at all football games, home basketball games and pep rallies. With new routines made up by themselves, they not only provide entertainment but display talent, hard w?ork and school spirit. The group is composed of four seniors and four juniors, each chosen at the end of her sophomore year. To qualify, each girl must have earned at least 70 in all subjects. Tryouts are held before Mr. Faust Fiore, band leader; the two advisors: Vice-Principal Alice Harrington and Miss Anne Ferris, gym instructor; and the senior majorettes. Tryouts for head majorette are held in February. The new head majorette is chosen at the same time as the new head cheerleader at the New Bedford game, the last home game of the season. She is selected on the basis of twirling ability, sense of rhythm, personality and leadership. Throughout the year the majorettes participate in local parades. This year at the annual Columbus Day Parade, the majorettes received first prize award for marching and twirling abilities. Also for the first time the majorettes took part in the Citizens Scholarship Foundation’s competition for majorettes. Once again displaying their fine talent, they were awarded first prize. 131 Kneeling left to right—K. Leibowitz, Secretary; J, Garrick, Vice-President; C. Munro, President. Standing—L. Clark, C. These girls participate in, help organize, and manage all intramural programs. The most important of these is the Sophomore Basketball Tournament in which the students coach, time, score and officiate. The G.A.A. also sponsors the Alumnae Reunion. During Christmas vacation former members and varsity team participants are invited to return to Durfee to play the current junior varsity and varsity basketball teams. Termination of the yearly program occurs at the Spring Outing. At a suitable location members enjoy swimming, recreational games, a cook-out and conclude with a fellowship program. 132 Kneeling from left—S. Dunlop, L . Vital, L. Vieira, Captain; C. Munro, J. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM The Durfee Girls' Varsity Basketball Team is a participating member of the Bristol County Girls' League. In December, the long-anticipated and ever-en joy able alumnae game served as an opener to the 1967 season. This was followed by a nine-game schedule which was interspersed by two Saturday events at Bridgewater State College. The girls participated in the annual Basketball Sports Day. Later, Durfee attended a Play Day, where they met other league teams from Southastern Massachusetts. This season the team comprised twelve players plus a student manager — eight seniors and five juniors. The award at the end of the season is an old English “D”. 133 BASEBALL Looking ahead to a fine season and a repeat Bristol County League championship, Coach Joe Lewis has several veterans returning. Back from last year are established veterans including Captain Tom Doyle, Carl Fitzgerald, Bill Mello, Pete Lomax, Paul Vaillancourt, Tom Botelho and Jim Raposa. Also much is expected of last years top reserves Dan Pimental, Kevin Manning, Joe Roque, George Phelan and Steve Lynch. All in all it should be a very interesting season for the Toppers who are playing a difficult schedule of more than twenty games. GOLF The golf team under Coach Bill Nugent is playing a twelve game schedule this year with matches set with Attleboro, North Attleboro, Bishop Feehan, Bishop Stang, New Bedford, Voke, Taunton, New Bedford and Somerset.
