To Miss Dorothy C. Sullivan, head of the Social Studies Department, we, the Class of 1966, proudly dedicate our Record Book. Through the influence of her enthusiastic and authoritative instruction Miss Sullivan has in- stilled in her students an ardent interest in history and economics. Teachers of her caliber will stand out in our recollections of our years at Durfee. FACULTY Thomas W. Hammond, Principal Daniel Kelly, Vice-Principal Joseph B. D’Adamo, Vice-Principal Alice C. Rigoli, Clerk-Stenographer Kathryn Lenehan, Clerk To the Class of 1966: April, 196( There is a certain amount of pleasure derived from giving advice. Perhaps it is because none of us finds the path through life particularly easy and we may spare others some of the trials and tribulations of our own growing up years. You have been advised by your parents and teachers and at this point I am sure you are beginning to realize that much of this advice was well meant and well founded. Growth toward an intellectual, social and emotional maturity does not occur at a steady pace. There are spurts of growth that occur at moments of role change. When you entered Durfee a change was taking place. Through your successes and failures as sophomores, juniors, and seniors the process was preparing you for another growth change. Today you are at the threshold of another one of those spurts of growth. You know now that you have ability. Have some faith in your capacity to use that ability constructively. Don’t let your faith be shaken by momentary setbacks and remember that the successful person is the one who profits by his mistakes. May there be some meaning to your life; built out of your own past, out of the experiences passed on to you and of the things you believe in and the values for which you are willing to make sacrifices. Please accept my congratulations and best wishes in what- ever endeavors you undertake. Principal. Ten Highest Ranking Seniors ANTHONY COELHO SANDRA J. STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The SAA, sponsor of all extracurricular activities, is the only organ- ization which has membership open to all students. The governing body is the Student Council, guided by President Jane McCauley, Vice-president Anne Donnelly and Secretary Helen Scho- field. It also includes presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries and coun- cilors of all classes, as well as the presidents of Home Room Directors and National Honor Society. The SAA membership drive in the Fall was followed by a sellout dance at the Dwelly Street Armory, Later, Durfee won recognition as ‘The school with the greatest spirit” and was presented $50 as first prize in a radio station spirit contest. Early in December the SAA honored football players, cheerleaders, majorettes and band members with a banquet. At Christmas time the SAA brightened the school with Christmas and Chanukah decorations and conducted a toy drive for the benefit of an orphans' home. The organization supplied buses to Boston Garden for the basketball tournaments and conducted a Folk Sing in April. Faculty advisors are Mrs. Joan T. CaiTagno and Mr. John Connell, The organization is grateful for the cooperation of Principal Thomas W. Hammond. 100 From left—R. Soucy, R. Rapoza, B. Mendes, P. St. Laurent BANK CASHIERS Since the banking program started at Durfee, Tuesday has been designated as Bank Day. Believing in the maxim, “Plan for the future today ' students increase their savings on this day each week. Deposits are collected in home rooms during the opening exercises and placed in large envelopes which are delivered to the cashiers in the office of the Durfee building and Technical building. The cashiers, Beatrice Mendes, Ruthann Rapoza, Pauline St. Laurent, Rachel Soucy, list the amounts deposited by each home room and place the envelopes in specially designed bank bags which are then locked and taken to the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company by bank agents. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business department, is in charge of high school banking. She works in conjunction with Mr. Robinson and Miss Ruth Swinburn of the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company. Prior to graduation, Mr. Joseph Lawlor of the Business Education Department takes charge of transferring accounts of senior students to regular banking accounts. 101 From left—C. Methot, A. The club has, for the fourth year, competed against high school and adult chess teams in the Rhode Island Chess League. Within the club itself, we have had, in addition to regular competition, a club tournament, a school tournament, in which non-club members could challenge the club's champions, and a tutorial service in chess from which any member could learn the game or improve his playing. The club also prepared for the library corridor an exhibit in which many interesting aspects of chess were shown. On the social level, we had a beach party in conjunction with the Science Club. Throughout the year, the officers of the Chess Club have been successful in stimulating interest in chess, both in the club and throughout the school. Officers are Teresa Furtak, president; Paul Lemaire, vice-president; William Kolakowski, secretary-treasurer. 103 From left, first row—S. Bender, S. Souza, R. Avila, J. Powers, F. Kulpa, K. They are chosen from the upper 25 per sent of the Junior and Senior Classes, These students are elected also on the basis of character, leadership and service. In the Spring, the society holds an impressive induction ceremony. These four qualities are illustrated by the speeches of members, and are symbolized by four torches. A guest speaker is an important part of the program. The society holds two annual social functions, the Fall Coffee Hour and the Spring Silver Tea. At the former, students have an opportunity to hear an outstanding speaker, and at the latter new Senior members are the invited guests. The society offers its assistance to any pupil needing scholastic aid, through its tutoring program. Both members and students benefit through this experience. A second scholarly activity is the publication of The Phoenix Nest, a literary magazine to which the entire student body is invited to contribute. The position of the society in our school is truly academic. Our faculty advisors are Miss Mildred V. Carroll, Miss Yolande Laliberte and Principal Thomas Hammond. 109 From left—M. Gold, J. Although the girls received no credits for singing as a group, they enjoyed entertaining at school and civic functions throughout Fall River and neighboring cities. Most of their selections were from musicals, folk songs and spirituals. Toward the end of the school year, the Vocalaries had the opportunity of sailing to Rocky Point to spend the day, and also to visit Symphony Hall to hear the Boston Pops play. Elizabeth Eagan and Pamela Ritz were accompanists. Helene Kaplan and Patricia Medeiros were also members. 112 DEBATE SOCIETY From left — J. D’Ambrosio, R. Gourse, E. Eagan, R. Doyle FOOTBALL Because of graduation losses, Coach Donald Montie had many problems prior to Durfee’s 1965 Bristol County League season. The backfield was manned by three experienced juniors and one sophomore, but important holes in the line were filled by sophomores. Reminiscent of the previous year, the Hill toppers rolled over New Bedford Yoke 30-0. Attleboro then shocked Durfee 40-8 for the worst defeat ever of a Montle-coached team. Sophomore fullback Joe Roque scored all the points for the Hilltoppers who tried, but were never in the game. Durfee again ended a Bishop Stang 16-game winning streak as they had done two years ago. Led by the running of Fitzgerald and Roque, Durfee exploded to a 26-0 win over Taunton. Returning to Hayward Field, Attleboro, Durfee suffered its second loss, 32-8, at the hands of Bishop Feehan. Fitzgerald's twTo touchdowns were not enough as North Attleboro next powered to a 35-13 victory over the Hilltoppers. Stopped by Durfee on the ground, the Rocketeers went to the air to win. Backed by the good signal calling of Tom Botelho and a fine passing defense, Durfee defeated Coyle High, 28-8, to close the Bristol County League season. A strong experienced New Bedford High team moved to a 23-0 victory over Durfee on Thanksgiving Day. Despite some surges and a spirited team play, the Hilltoppers were unable to mount a sustained drive. Captain Henry Lord was presented the annual Jake Reagan Memorial Award as the team’s most valuable player. Geoffrey Potts, a quarterback and fine defensive specialist, was the Coaches’ Trophy (Unsung Hero) Award winner, Ron Franco was the recipient of the Trevisano Trophy as linesman of the year. Tackle John Azevedo and halfback Carl Fitzgerald were elected co-captains of the 1966 team. 119 19-STATE CHAMPIONS-66 From left, first row—M. Rebello. E. Fleming. W. Winarski.- R. Dempsey, E. Leandro BASKETBALL With only Ted Dempsey gone from the ’65 number two team in the State, Coach Karam made use of two good juniors and a strong bench to produce the best team in the State. Despite an opening loss to De La Salle, hopes soared when Durfee beat Coyle 76-64. Wins over Fairhaven and Rogers were followed by a home opener loss to New Bedford. Then the Hiiltoppers jelled and began outclassing all opposition, finishing 13-1 in league play and 17-3 overall. Enterting the Tech Tournament the B.C.L. champs beat Boston Latin, routed Salem and edged Cardinal Spellman to enter the finals. They defeated Weymouth 59-45 for Durfee’s first Tech Tourney title in 10 years. In the second Annual State Tournament Durfee defeated Springfield Cathedral and previously unbeaten Westboro to face Weymouth again in the final. The Hiiltoppers won 50-45 and were honored the next day with a parade and a banquet. Bob Dempsey, Earl Seligman and Ernie Fleming were named to the Herald News All-Bristol County team, with Coach Karam as coach. Fleming was selected Most Valuable Player in the Tech Tourney. Dempsey and Seligman shared the George Kaplan Memorial Award. 121 From left, kneeling—L. Packer, J. Kenney, N Wrobel. Standing—D. Lifrak, S. Bor, L. Alves (bead), S. Tabor, L. Sherman. CHEERLEADERS Enthusiasm, happiness, tension and heartbreak are experienced by a Durfee cheerleader. To qualify for the squad, consisting of four seniors and four juniors, a girl must maintain grades of at least TO, In the Spring of her sopho- more year tryouts are held and selection is made by outside judges. She is chosen on the basis of ability, personality, voice and pep and serves for two years. At the final basketball game the head cheerleader announces her successor, chosen by the four seniors and the advisor, Miss Claire Marie Hart, The football season went by quickly, ending with a heartbreaking loss to New Bedford. Although the basketball team lost its first game, the girls cheered the team to the Bristol County League, Eastern Massa- chusetts and, finally, State Championship, A parade and outdoor tribute proved that “We're Number One 1 122 From left, front—A. With new routines, made up by themselves, they not only provided entertainment but displayed talent, hard work and school spirit. The gronp is composed of four seniors and four juniors, each chosen in her sophomore year. To qualify each girl must have earned at least 70 in all subjects. Tryouts are held before Mr. Faust Fiore, band leader; the two advisors, Vice-principal Alice Harrington and Miss Anne Ferris, and the senior majorettes. This year a new tradition was begun. Tryouts for head majorette, who was chosen simultaneously with the new head cheerleader, were held in February. She was selected on the basis of twirling ability, sense of rhythm, personality and leadership. 123 From left, kneeling—N. Gancarski. D, Longchamps, C. Lafex, A. Creamer, S. Bernier, P. Sullivan. In September membership is open to junior and sophomore girls. They are chosen for initiative and interest in the sports program. At Christmas time the GAA holds a reunion for its alumnae. Graduates test their skills against the varsity and junior varsity teams. In the Spring an annual outing is held and awards are presented. 124 From left, kneeling—N. Pacheco, N. Gancarski, Captain C.
