Rigoli, Clerk-Stenographer Kathryn Lenehan, Clerk To the Class of 1965: The world today demands so much of you in the way of the dimensions of excellence in education. The faculty at Durfee has striven to inculcate a capacity for inquiry, problem solving competence, and the means of communication and computation. To some of you the vision of the future has been etched very sharply and its dependence on education made clear. Some of you have received satisfaction from day to day rewards at school and know what you have to do to carry out your plans for the future. Still others have been passive to all attempts to kindle the spark of independence and will need more time to mature. To all of you I would like to extend my best wishes and sincere congratulations. May you all succeed in your future endeavors, and cherish the years you spent at Durfee. Principal. We were all moved by the untimely deaths of three members of this grad- uating class. “Why” we thought when we learned that these students, part of Durfee and part of ourselves, had left us. Linda Rosenstein died during our Junior year. Although she had been at Durfee for only three months, her outstanding attitude and personality were imparted to her classmates. Keith Hymes, a well-known student and member of the baseball and soccer teams, was in a fatal highway accident last Summer. His sense of humor and outlook on life also contributed to that of his fellow students, Gregory Crook, student-scientist and popular member of the band and orchestra, had a tragic underwater accident at the beginning of our senior year. He, too, gave of his time, energy and £ resenee to others. Linda Rosenstein, Keith Hymes, and Gregory Crook would have graduated with us. However, their contributions to both social and academic activities will live on with the undying spirit of our school. We, the Class of 1965, devote this page to the memory of our deceased friends, hoping that we will make use of what they have given to Durfee and ourselves. The governing body of the association is the Student Council which plans and supervises all social functions. This council is headed by three officers, President Christine McIntyre, Vice-president Jane McCauley and Secretary Ann Donnelly. It also includes president, vice presidents, secretaries and councillors of all classes and the presidents of the Home Room Directors and the National Honor Society. In September the Council issued S.A.A. guide books to orientate sophomores. The annual membership drive was held in October and was followed by a dance for all new and old members. Early in December the S, A. A. honored football players, cheerleaders, majorettes, and band members with an annual banquet. Christmas is the time for giving and the S.A.A. this year felt that it wanted to enter into this spirit. A 30-foot Christmas tree was placed in the study hall for the students- enjoyment and a toy drive was sponsored so that Durfee might give some joy to the children in orphanages throughout the city. The Spring events included a book drive, a trip by several Council members to the Massachusetts Student Council Convention in Ipswich, Mass., the Junior Prom and an assembly to honor students who were outstanding in scholarship, leadership and service. Faculty advisors are Mrs. Joan T. Carfagno and Mr. John Connell. 107 Seated—K. Silvia, M. Yentz. Standing—R. Carvalho, P. Lepage. BANK CASHIERS Since the banking program started at Durfee, Tuesday has been designated as Bank Day. Believing in the maxim, “Plan for the future today students increase their savings on this day each week. Deposits are collected in home rooms during the opening exercises and placed in large envelopes which are delivered to the cashiers in the office of the Durfee building and Technical building. The cashiers, Rose Marie Carvalho, Pauline LePage, Rose Marie Silvia, and Madeline Yentz, list the amounts deposited by each home room and place the envelopes in specially designed bank bags which are then locked and taken to the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company by bank agents. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business department, is in charge of high school banking. She works in conjunction with Mr, Francis Buswell and Mr. James Robinson of the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company. Prior to graduation, Mr. Joseph Lawlor of the Business Education Depart- ment takes charge of transferring accounts of senior students to regular banking accounts. 108 Left to right—W. Hopkins, C. Arruda. L. Sullivan BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, composed of seniors who have received 70 per cent or over in all four-and five-period subjects, was organized to sup- plement the work of business education teachers in informing students of what is expected of them in the business world and helping to develop proper business attitudes. In addition to regular meetings, the group sponsors the NOMA Spelling Tests and Arithmetic Tests, the bank cashiers, typists for the Record Book, office aides, and secretaries to the heads of departments. In June they present a business awards assembly. A social affair at which the entire faculty of the business education department will be guests will end the schedule for the year. Officers are President William Hopkins, Vice-President Linda Sul- livan, Secretary Carol Arruda. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business education department, is advisor. 109 T. Furtak, E. Kuliopulos, J. Cyr. CHESS CLUB During the 1964-1965 season the Chess Club has successfully com- peted against high school, college, and adult chess teams of Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the Rhode Island Chess League. The Durfee club has also visited East Providence High School where we engaged in the first of a two-round match, and for the second round Durfee acted as host. Within the club itself we have had, besides the regular competition, a tutorial service in chess from which any member can learn the game or improve his playing. On the social level, we have had a Christmas semi-formal dance at White's and a beach party, both in conjunction with the Science Club. Throughout the year, the officers of the club have stimulated interest in chess, both in the club and throughout the school. no Left to right, first row—E. Walls, M. Black, E, Braz, J. Zalkind, CLASSICAL CLUB The Classical Club promotes interest in Latin and Greek civilization— as shown in such aspects as art, sculpture, architecture, government, literature, customs and religion. Each month a different student selected by the Aediles speaks on some aspect of classical culture. The officers for 1964-1965 are Consul Eileen Braz (President); Praetor Jean Powers (Vice-President); Censor Marilyn Black (Secretary); and Curule Aedile Joan Wojcik (Program Chairman). Senior members who have previously held office are Paul Cohen (Praetor) and Susan Zalkind (Curule Aedile). Members of the Class of 1965 who served on committees are Paul Cohen (Sophomore Aedile); Susan Zalkind (Sophomore and Junior Quaestor, Record Book Committee) ; Antone Pacheco (Sophomore and Senior Quaestor, Publicity Committee); Shirley Eisenman (Publicity Com- mittee) ; Ellen Zaslow (Senior Aedile, Record Book Committee) ; Joyce Freedman (Record Book Committee) ; and Louise Dubitsky (Chairman of Record Book Committee). Seniors who provided entertainment are Marilyn Black (pianist), Joyce Freedman, Antone Pacheco, Louise Dubitsky, and Susan Zalkind. Ill Left to right, M. Goldsmith, M. Furtado, S. Albernaz, CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SOCIETY Contemporary Jazz Society is a very interesting title, “Jazz” is a word which seems to fascinate many students. Some think the club is a group of students who talk about jazz; others think the group listens to jazz, and still others think it is an organization of off-beat students who walk around in a weird world of rhythm. The Jazz Society does listen to and discuss records; as for off-beat members, there aren't any. The society was formed in 1962. Its purpose is to give the student member a greater understanding of jazz as music and as an art form. The society tries to please all its members by playing the different types of jazz by recognized artists. Discussions are held after each record, and members are given a chance to tell how they feel about the record. Membership is open to all Durfee students. Meetings are held once every month with Mr. Edmond Machado, advisor. Student officers are Max Goldsmith, president; Steven Albernaz, vice-president; and Marilyn Fu rtado, seeretary-treasurer. 112 Left to right, first row—R. Lepes, M. Levy, E. Speier, S. Coady and Miss Rochelle Massoud, is now finishing one of its most sparkling years in school history. Sparked by enthusiasm and a large, active membership body, the forensic organization can be proud of its recent accom pli sh men ts. Realizing the need for social as well as educational encouragement, the society undertook two main social events during the past year, both of which will be happily remembered by all participants. These were the Christmas and beach parties. More important, however, are the educational aspects of developing forensic skills. To promote this, the main aspect of the organization’s program, the society runs a novice debate tournament and competes in the Narragansett Interscholastic Debating League. This year’s tournament was won by Sophomores Harvey Lee and Mike Gibbons. With such a forceful combination of outstanding edu- cational and social opportunities, it is no wonder the Debate Society has been such an outstanding success. 113 Left to right—A. Masciarelli, N. Stafford, M. Sullivzn, FRENCH CLUB The French Club, or Le Cercle Francais, is composed of sophomores, juniors and seniors who have shown an interest in French and whose grades in the language indicate some ability. Its purpose is to supplement classroom work in the further cultiva- tion of interest in French culture, art, literature and customs. The programs vary from poetry and music to sketches. The factulty advisor is Miss Margaret E, Fletcher. The officers are Marjorie Sullivan, president; Ann Masciarelli, vice-president; and Nancy Hafford, secretary. 114 Seated—S. Viana, L. Kaufman, D. Bucko. Standing—S. Kuttner, R. Capone. E. Gebski. GERMAN CLUB The Deutsche Verein, better known as the German Club, is one of several modern language associations. Any student who is studying German, who has studied German, and who is interested in Germany may join the club, which meets on the third Thursday of every month. The main objective is to foster an interest in Germany—its language, its culture, its people. This year this has been accomplished through the viewing of films, which have been sent to the club from the German consulate or which have been taken by members of the club who have visited Germany, the singing of and listening to folk music, and the arranging of a library corridor display. The highlight of the year was the participation in Tivoli, the German festival at Boston University. HILLTOP With one of the smallest staffs since the formation of the Durfee Hilltop another year of financial success and popularity may be recorded in this book. Through publishing the Hilltop, senior students are given the oppor- tunity to put to good use the journalistic knowledge gained in their junior year as members of the Journalism I class. This year the Hilltop made an attempt to reach all students through- out the school by publishing stories concerning all the various clubs and athletic groups at Durfee. The Hilltop further tried to appeal to the students by relating interesting items, expressing editorial opinions and promoting the best interest of the school. Published bi-weekly by the Journalism II class, the staff, under the guidance of Mr. John T. Crowley, was headed by Henrietta Araujo, editor-in-chief and Patricia Pavao, business manager. Included in the staff were Michael Sypek, sports editor; “Did You Know,” Rose Marie Silvia, “Bits and Pieces,” Kathleen Bannister and Joan Kates, “Campus Chatter,” Nancy King and Paula Kelly. 116 J. Kenney, R. Kulpa. HOME ROOM DIRECTORS Home Room Directors, the largest active group in the school, ai'e elected early in the year, with a boy and a girl chosen to represent each room. The group elects a president from the senior class and a vice- president-secretary from the junior class. This year Rita Kulpa and Janice Kenney were chosen for these offices, respectively. The directors assume the duties of reading the morning notices, encouraging participation in school activities, taking the attendance and doing the banking. They support the Students’ Activities Association and are very helpful to the home room teachers. The faculty advisor is Mr. James S. Panos. 117 Seated—D, Drapeau, D. Enos Standing—R, Martin, J. Drapeau. RED CROSS YOUTH COUNCIL The Durfee council works together with the Greater Fall River Chapter of High School Red Cross. The purpose of this council is to give service to the community and to promote leadership. It is very active in providing entertainment for local orphans and patients in other insti- tutions. This year the council sponsored parties and dances in the local chil- dren’s homes. The major activity of the year is the annual June outing which is attended by 100 orphans. The educational aims of the Red Cross Youth are civic responsibility, human relations, competent citizenship, self-development, and social com- petence, As members of the Red Cross, the students are playing their part in a great world team. Officers are President Rose Mary Macy, Vice-President Dianne Drapeau, Treasurer Donna Enos, Secretary Jeanne Drapeau. Faculty advisor is Mr. Daniel Berthiaume. 118 Left to right, seated—B. Katersky, R. Ciarpella. Standing—C. Chung, R. Carvalho. LIBRARY AIDES One of the most important features of a well-equipped school is its library. At Durfee, the Ambrose F. Keeley serves hundreds of students each day. Assisting the pupils in finding materials and books in the library is part of the job of Library Aides. The members of this organization also give assistance in other ways; thus, they help maintain an efficiently functioning library. Among their other duties are issuing and distributing passes, arranging and preparing books for the shelves, and creating displays for the library corridor. The club is under the guidance of Mrs. Rita Nagle. The officers for this year are Rose Ciarpella, president; Barbara Katersky, vice-president; Candace Chung, secretary-treasurer; Rose Mary Carvalho, activities chairman. The officers, together with Mrs. Nagle plan the activities. Included in these special events are the decorating of the library at Christmas, an annual trip of an entertaining and educational nature, and a beach party at the end of the school year. 119 MATHEMATICS CLUB This club provides its members with the opportunity to investigate those areas of mathematics which are not included in the ordinary cur- riculum. At monthly meetings, guest speakers from local educational institutions and mathematics-oriented business concerns, as well as student lecturers, presented informative talks on interesting aspects of computer and modern mathematics. The club sponsors an annual mathematics tournament. Social activi- ties include a bowling party during the Christmas vacation and an outing in the Spring. Officers for the current year were Peter Stasiowski, president; Frederick Walezyk, vice-president; and Barbara Katersky, secretary- treasurer. The faculty advisors are Mr, Edward F. Carey and Mr. Donald Wood. 120 E. Zaslow, J. Freedman E. Eagan. MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB Varied programs for the enrichment and enjoyment of the members are presented during the school year. The gamut extends from the cur- rently popular folk music to highly classical concert repertoire. This year, we learned the nature of the art song, saw a film on Leonard Bernstein’s visit to Berlin, listened to a fine student presentation of folk songs, and went to Boston to hear the Greater Boston Youth Symphony and to visit the Gardner Museum for a chamber music recital. Also, we compared avant garde music with its counterparts in art, traveled to Symphony Hall to hear the Boston Pops and listened to recorded music from the member nations of the United Nations. The club attempts to provide musical experiences which will lay the groundwork for greater enjoyment in listening during future years. To this end we draw many students not connected with the music department. 121 : Left to right, M. Clarke, L. Chung, L. Dubitsky. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society remains unique at Durfee High School, for it is the only truly academic society in the school. Its members are selected for distinction in portraying the qualities of service, leadership, character, and scholarship. The juniors and seniors, chosen for membership from the upper 25 per cent of their respective classes, are inducted at traditional cere- monies in the Spring. At the induction, four torches are lighted to symbolize the four qualities of the society. Speeches are presented by members of this organization for each category and a guest speaker is invited to the cere- mony. The Spring and Fall Coffee Hours are the annual social events conducted by the society. At these events, a member of the faculty is invited to speak. The society members offer their services as tutors to classmates needing assistance in their studies. This year the club, under the direction of Miss Mildred V. Carroll, Miss Yolande Laliberte, and Mr. Thomas Hammond, has continued to maintain the high standards upon which the society was founded. 122 Left to right, seated—B. Kupiec, P. Deus, D. Ferreira, Standing—M. Coelho S, Alto, H, Martin, D. Luz. PORTUGUESE CLUB The main objective of the club is to familiarize members with Portuguese customs and traditions. It also aims to increase their knowledge of Portuguese culture and interests them in outside activities. A mark of 75 or better is the qualification for membership in the organization. Members abide by the rules which are stated in the consti- tution of the club. The outside activities of the club include trips and outings. The activities of the current year included a trip to Boston Science Museum. Special speakers and film strips on Portugal were also provided for, A special survey based on the study and credit for Portuguese in sur- rounding colleges was tabulated by the club. The club has had a successful year with Mr. Gilbert Cavaco as the faculty advisor. 123 Seated—B. Katersky, Wr Gaw. Standing—P. Cohen, J. Medeiros, W. Moss. SCIENCE CLUB Under the leadership of its officers, President Paul D. Cohen, Vice- President William H. Gaw, Secretary-Treasurer John Gary Medeiros I, Corresponding Secretary Barbara Katersky, and Advisor Mr. James Wil- liam Pelletier, the club has enjoyed a most profitable program during the 1964-1965 school year. The meetings were highlighted by lectures from the local scientific community—Mr. Stoekler, Firestone Rubber and Latex Products; Mr. Button, Globe Manufacturing; Mr. Bosche, New England Telephone and Telegraph Co.; Dr. Fradkin, Citizens’ Scholarship Founda- tion; and Dr. Tompkins, Truesdale Clinic. Many of the members participated in a very successful observatory program under the direction of William Moss. The members of the club took pride in the success of the Durfee Science Fair and the Massachusetts Region III Science Fair in which many members participated and to which many contributed time, effort, and energy. A visit to the New England Science Fair in Boston and to the nuclear reactor at M. I. T., in May, brought the year to a dynamic climax. In addition to its academic programs, the Science Club sponsored various social functions. The annual semi-formal dinner dance was held during the Christmas vacation. The beach party in June served as a fare- well to our senior members to whom we all wish health, happiness, and success. 124 Left to right, seated—M. Freitas, C, Mello, J. Kaplan, M. Levy, S. The officers for the year 1964-65 were Marjorie Levy, president; Christine Mello, vice-president; Jerri Kaplan, secretary-treasurer; Susan Bender, program chairman. The first activity of the current year was a complete revision of the constitution. A new membership quota and new qualifications for members and officers were among the articles ratified. The club also planned an exhibit displayed in the Keeley Library corridor during the first week of June. Arrangements were made for a field trip to a Boston museum or new facilities for teaching language. The Spanish Club meets on the third Thursday of every month of the school year. Through discussions and exhibits it encourages the collecting of stamps as a hobby by the faculty as well as the student body. During the year, the club sponsored two field trips, one to the Fall River Post Office, and the other to the H. E, Harris Stamp Company in Boston. Later in the year, this club showed several films dealing with United Nations stamps and that organization's functions. In addition to these and other activities, the membership enjoyed several socials which included holiday parties and its annual beach party. For the year 1964-1965, the officers were Eugene Kosinski, president; John Silva, vice-president; Frances Drapeau, secretary; and Carol Feldman, treasurer. 126 Left to right, R, Oliveira, A. Silva, FOOTBALL The football team, coached by Mr. Donald Montle, opened Us 1964 season with one of the strongest and most experienced lines in this area. In the backfield, two of the slots were filled by seniors, and the remaining positions by sophomores. The Hilltoppers were invincible in the opener against New Bedford Voke as they roared to a 40-0 victory. Arthur Murray and a solid defense was the story in this game. Then the strong Attleboro team got a break in the third quarter of the second game and this was enough to carry them to a 14-13 victory over the Red and Black. A crowd well over 10,000 witnessed the night game at Sargent Field as they watched the troops of Durfee and Stang High play one of the hardest hitting football games in years. Stang jumped to a quick 18-0 lead and won 18-7. Taunton High became the first victim of Durfee's six-game winning streak. Again led by good running and great line plaj7, Durfee beat the Herringtowners, 20-8. The newest addition to Bristol County play, Bishop Feehan, gave the Durfee team a good fight before bowing. After jumping off to a quick 23 point lead, with the running of Harrington, Murray and Fitzgerald, The Hilltoppers had to strengthen their wall as North Attleboro rolled within nine points losing 23-14. Demonstrating some of last year's characteristics, the mighty Hilltoppers rolled over the Blue Devils of Fairhaven and romped to a 33-0 win. Playing what was possibly their best football of the season, the Durfee team trounced a strong traditional rival Coyle, 46-7. The Toppers closed their season on a winning note as they defeated a strong New Bedford High team, 14-6, in a game which was postponed from Thanksgiving Day to the following Sunday because of inclement weather. Some of the boys who received post-season honors were George Lavoie, Jim Feijo, Bill Carey, Chuck Harrington, Dan Michaels, Arthur Murray, Vin Schieri, Dave Bouchard and John Mills. Bob Smith, injured early in the season, was credited for his fine display of sportsmanship and team effort by receivng the Coaches' award. George Lavoie and Jim Feijo wfere co-recipients of the linesman award of the year, the Trevisano Trophy. 133 Left to right, first row- M. Rebello, Ft. Dempsey, E. Dempsey, P. Barrette. 2nd row—R. DiCorpo. E. Seligman, M. Clarke, K. Robinson, W. Winarski. BASKETBALL With only the Dempsey brothers back from last year's nucleus, Coach Thomas Karam molded a starting squad of four juniors and one senior into the number 2 team in the state. The hoopsters split the Rhode Island team series by defeating De La Salle in the opener and then losing to a strong Rogers High quintet. In its first county match Durfee defeated Fairhaven by two points and from there went on to win its next seven games, many by two or three points. The Coyle Warriors came into town and quickly gained an 11-point lead only to have the Hilltoppers fight back to leave the floor at half- time trailing by one point. The Toppers took command in the third and in most of the fourth quarter, but the Warriors came on strong in the closing seconds and squeaked out a 3-point victory. Then, the team went on the victory path again and lost just two out of its last nine games. The Topppers closed out the home season with a 56-40 victory over New Bedford. Being one of the co-champions of the B. C. L., Durfee entered the Tech Tournament for the 20th time in 21 years. Its first victory over Coyle was one which gave the Durfeeites great satisfaction. But the Toppers did not stop here. They defeated strong North Quincy and Archbishop Williams before going down in the finals to Catholic Memorial. Then the Hilltoppers was the first team to win a game in the first Massachusetts State as they edged out David Prouty High. After defeating strong Chicopee Comprehensive, the Toppers once agam met the giants of Catholic Memorial and once again lost after giving them a tough battle. This left Durfee number 2 in the state. In post-season polls, three of the starting five were recognized by newspapers. They were Captain Ted Dempsey, Earl Seligman and Bob Dempsey. Ted and Bob Dempsey also received honors on all-state teams. 136 Left to right, seated—K. Silva, C. Harrington, E. Dempsey, J. Creamer, D. Howarth. Standing—H. Blackburn, T. Boudria, B. Bor, J. Fachada, W, Paulo, V. Berube. BASEBALL As the Record Book goes to press, the baseball squad under Coach Joseph Lewis is eagerly looking forward to a successful season with a number of last year's veterans returning. A good schedule is lined up with games against the University of Rhode Island freshmen team, Rogers High and the Bristol County League teams. Returning to the starting team are Captain Ken Silva, Ted Dempsey, Barry Bor, Bob Dempsey, Chuck Harrington, Bob Whitfield, Ted Boudria, Jake Fachada, John Creamer and Bruce San terre. 137 Left to right, seated—S. Moskowitz, J. Murphy, J. Feijo, E. Tavares, W. Hopkins. Standing- -W. Sullivan, F. DiNucci, R. Smith, J. Rowe, A. Murray, TRACK Coach Clinton Borden is whipping a hard-working track team into shape as they seek the Bristol County League championship. The schedule includes competition with eight league teams, the county meet in New Bedford, and the state track meet in Boston. The nucleus of returning seniors includes Arthur Murray and John Murphy, co-captains; Bill Hopkins, John Rowe, Boh Smith, Jim Feijo, Bill Sullivan, Steve Moskowitz, Gene Tavares and Frank DiNucci. 138 Left to right, seated R. Senior members include co-captains Ed Goltz and Alvin Almeida, A1 Garrick, Ed Haponik, Ron Lepes and Rick Gregory. The other starter is a sophomore, Roland Viveiros. Mr, Prank Jordan is the coach of the team, whose 1965 opponents include Old Rochester, Dartmouth, Apponequet, New Bedford, Coyle, Fairhaven, Falmouth and Taunton. 139 Left to right, first row—M. Brown. SOCCER The soccer team, coached by Mr. Charles Mendes, opened their 1964 season with a string of seven straight games without a defeat. After playing a scoreless tie with New Bedford Voke in the season opener, the Hilltopper squad defeated Wilbur High, 5-0. Co-captain Alex Almeida scored three goals in this victory. One of the toughest games of the season was played when Durfee met the very strong New Bedford High squad. The outcome was another tie for the Toppers, 1-1. The hooters then went on to either win or tie the next, four games. Then the team lost the services of its excellent goalie, Co-captain Steve Rogers. After his departure, the Durfee team could manage only one tie to the remaining five games. In that tie with Westport High, Alex Almeida again turned the “hat trick” by scoring three goals in one game for the second time this season. Captain Almeida led the season scoring with nine goals; Brazao knocked in five goals; and Liebgott and Nawersa each scored one goal. Selected to the county all-star team were Alex Almeida, outside left; and Joseph Arruda, left halfback. The team's overall record was three wins, five ties, and four losses. 140 Left to right, standing—J, Canneamey, H, Roy, W. Mello, R. Goldin. Seated— R. Ford, M. Shaughnessy, J. Karam. GOLF The Durfee golf team anticipates a successful season with a squad filled with seniors. Standing—left to right, N. Wrobel. M. Barreira, J. Kenney, N. Noga, L. Alves, M. Cohen, L. Packer. CHEERLEADERS Enthusiasm, happiness, tension and heartbreak are all experienced by a Durfee cheerleader. To qualify for the squad, consisting of four seniors and four juniors, a girl must maintain grades of 70 in all subjects. In the Spring of her sophomore year, tryouts are held and selection is made by a group of outside judges. She is chosen on the basis of ability, personality, voice and pep, and serves on the squad for two years. At the final basketball game, the present head cheerleader announces her successor who has been chosen by the four seniors and their advisors, Miss Claire Hart and Miss Nancy Carroll. This past football season was highlighted by the thrilling but disappointing night game against Bishop Stang. The spirit of the cheerleaders was not dampened but increased as they cheered their team on to the Bristol County championship in basketball. The climax of this season was reached at the first Massachusetts State Finals at Boston Garden. Wearing the traditional Durfee corsage, the girls, holding the colorful school banner, led the crowd in the singing of the Alma Mater— “Loud we sing of Durfee3s glory!” 142 Left to right, kneeling—S. Elias, F, Shogel, E. Cahill, P. Manning. Standing— A. St. Laurent, B. Cook, D. Dunham, B. Maclaughlin. MAJORETTES At pep rallies, football games, basketball games and parades the majorettes perform to the lively music of the school band under the direction of Mr. Faust Fiore. Their activities and color uniforms help to foster school spirit among loyal rooters, Try-outs are held each year for sophomore girls who have a mark of at least 70 in all subjects. The four finalists are selected by faculty members and the senior majorettes. The head majorette is chosen at the end of her junior year by the director of the band and the majorette advisors. She is selected on the basis of her qualities of leadership, her twirling ability and her sense of rhythm. At the annual football banquet each junior majorette receives a “D” with a baton insignium. The faculty advisors are Miss Alice Harrington and Miss Anne Ferris. 143 Left to right, seated- B. Pastek, P. Moore, D. Gagnon. Kneeling—N. Stafford. P. Simbro. Standing—P. Sherblom. N. Brodeur, P. Ferris, the GAA is one of Dnrfee’s most active clubs. Primary objectives are development of leadership and good sportsmanship. Through group participation in leaders’ corps, coaching, officiating and careful organization, a well rounded athletic program is capably conducted. In October, intramural volleyball is offered. The Sophomore Girls' Basketball Tournament, a traditional event at Durfee, keeps athletics popular in the Winter season. In the Spring, intramural softball and recreational games take precedent. Officers are Patricia Moore, president; Anne Creamer, vice- president, and Eileen Zawrotny, secretary. 144 Left to right, seated—N. Pacheco, N, Stafford, B. Bastek, S. Bernier, N, Gancarski. GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL In 1965, as a participating member in the Bristol County Girls' League, Durfee played a nine-game schedule. Faced with the return of only three veterans, the girls took to the court with practically a new team. After a slow start the season was concluded with a 3-6 record. Players who met school requirements received an Old English “D” at the Sports Award Assembly. They appear in the photograph on this page. 145 from FALL RIVER AREA President, JAMES GIBNEY Vice-President, IRENE GAGNON Treasurer, MARC MANCINI Secretary, JUDITH GAGNON Youth Adult Advisor, MISS MARY CRONIN Executive Coordinator, ABEL MARCELINE Moderator, REV.
