E D I C A T I 0 N We, the Class of 1964, dedicate this year book to Mrs. Lenora G. Goltz, teacher of mathematics. She will always be remembered for her ability to make subject matter interesting and comprehensible. Her infinite patience and understanding are heartily ap- preciated. High school years are often filled with strug- gle and doubt. Mrs. Goltz's treatment of her students as people with lives and responsibilities outside the realm of the classroom has helped ease the burden of adolescence. We wish to extend to her our sincerest gratitude, along with our wishes for her continued health and success. We only hope that she will keep on helping her students as she has so greatly helped us. Senior Clerk-Stenographer Senior Clerk-Stenographer Sen or Clerk-Stenographer Clerk-Stenographer Clerk-Stenographer Clerk To the Class of 1964: This is probably one of the happiest days of your life but it should also be one of serious reflection. It has been said, “A man shall be known by his learning.” How well known you be- come has already been determined by your record during your school years. Whether you go on to institutions of higher learning or whether you go into industry, the training you received at Durfee should be of assistance to you. As a large comprehensive high school dealing with culturally, intellectually, and financially different children, Durfee has taught you how to get along with your fellow students in and out of the classroom. You were able to see Democracy prove itself as a workable form of government. The world watched in horror and trepida- tion as the United States lost its leader at the hands of an assas- sin ; but it was clearly demonstrated that our form of government will work when its people are united. Your carefree days are over. You are now young adults and must participate as thinking, discriminating adults to keep this country of ours free. Now is the time to put into practice what you have learned at Durfee, Please accept my congratulations on your graduation and may you continue to grow7 in wisdom and in stature. STUDENTS7 ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students’ Activities Association, the coordinator of all extra- curricular activities, is the only school organization whose membership is open to the entire student body. The Student Council, the governing board, consists of annually elected officers and delegates from the three classes. The S.A.A. officially opened the school year with the annual Fall membership drive. In December the S.A.A. sponsored the football ban- quet in honor of the members of the undefeated squad. A delegation from the Student Council represented the high school at the Spring convention of the Southeastern Massachusetts Chapters of Student Councils held at Attleboro High School. Highlighting the S.A.A. year was the popular Hootennany, fea- turing nationally recognized folk singers, presented at the Bank Street Armory in early May. The traditional Junior Prom, held later in the same month, concluded the S.A.A. activities for the year. S.A.A. officers are Joan Reed, president; Lois Reed, vice president, and Jane McCauley, secretary. Faculty advisors are Mrs. Joan T. Carfagno and Mr. James E. Keeley. 89 Left to right — G. Rainone, C. Gouveia, B. Birchenough, B, Coriaty. BANK CASHIERS Since the banking program started at Durfee, Tuesday has been de- signated as Bank Day. Believing in the maxim, “Plan for the future today,” students increase their savings on this day each week. Deposits are collected in home rooms during the opening exercises and placed in large envelopes which are delivered to the cashiers in the office of the Durfee building and Technical building. The cashiers, Beverly Birchenough, Barbara Coriaty, Carol Gouveia, and Gail Rainone, list the amounts deposited by each home room and place the envelopes in specially designed bank bags which are then locked and taken to the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company by bank agents. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business department, is in charge of high school banking. She works in conjunction with Mr. Francis Buswell and Mr. James Robinson of the B. M. C. Durfee Trust Company. Prior to graduation, Mr. Joseph Lawlor of the Business Edu- cation Department takes charge of transferring accounts of senior stu- dents to regular banking accounts. no Loft to right — K. Medeiros, J. Correia, C. Aguiar. BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, composed of seniors who have received 70 per cent or over in all four and five period subjects, was organized to supple- ment the work of business education teachers in informing students of what is expected of them in the business world and helping to develop proper business attitudes. In addition to regular meetings, the group sponsors the NOMA Spelling Tests and Arithmetic Tests, the bank cashiers, typists for the Record Book, office aides, and secretaries to the heads of departments. In June they present a business awards assembly. A social affair at which the entire faculty of the business education department will be guests will end the schedule for the year. Officers are President James Correia, Vice-President Carol Aguiar, Secretary Kathleen Medeiros. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business education department, is advisor. 91 CADET CORPS 92 Left to right, seated — Sgt. Major S. Teixeira, 1st Sgt, J. Gardella. Standing —Platoon Sgts, E, Desrosiers, R. Tepper CHESS CLUB During the 1963-1964 season, the Chess Club has embarked on new programs and continued many of the successful ones initiated in the past. We are, for the second year, competing in the Rhode Island Chess League, playing against both high school and adult chess teams. Within the club itself, we have had, besides the regular competition, a four- round Swiss tournament, with many dub members participating. On the social level, we have had a Christmas semi-formal dance and a beach party, both in conjunction with the Science Club. Through- out the year, the officers of the Chess Club have been successful in stimulating interest in chess, both in the club and throughout the school. 94 Left to right, front — B_ Katersky, H, Slavit, P+ Cohen. CLASSICAL CLUB The Classical Club promotes interest in Latin and Greek civilization — as shown in such aspects as art, sculpture, architecture, government, literature, customs and religion. Each month a different student selected by the Aediles speaks on some aspect of classical culture. The officers are Consul Howard Slavit (President) ; Praetor Paul Cohen (Vice-President); Censor Barbara Katersky (Secretary); and Curule Aedile Susan Zalkind (Program Chairman). Senior members who have previously held office are Howard Slavit (Curule Aedile) and Cynthia Gold (Censor). Members of the Class of 1964 who served on committees are Linda Levine (Senior Aedile); Lois Carreiro (Sophomore Aedile); Ellen Eisen- berg (Senior Quaestor, pianist for Latin Christmas Carols, and Publicity Committee); Jerome Horvitz (Sophomore Quaestor) ; Peggy Spellman (Record Book Committee); and Nancy Botelho (Record Book Committee). Seniors who provided entertainment are Elaine Kaminski, Cynthia Arruda, Neil Lovit, Jerome Horvitz, Susan Arriek, and Janet Boardman. 95 Left to right, first row — C, Brabant, S. DePippo, S. DEBATING SOCIETY Sparked by tremendous enthusiasm, active participation, a large membership, and strong leadership, the Debating Society, under the leadership of Mr. William K. Coady, has recently concluded its most active season in over a decade. Although the main function of the or- ganization is to teach students how to speak, debate, discuss and refute skillfully, the society was active socially, as it sponsored a Christmas and a beach party with the support of other organizations. The most outstanding activity has been the popular and well known novice debate tournament. For the first time in the long history of the organization there was 100 per cent participation, making it a chal- lenging, interesting and educational experience for new debaters. In all, over 15 teams participated. After a series of setbacks in the Narragansett Interscholastic De- bating League, Durfee continued through stiff opposition in the second half of the year at almost a ,700 clip, convincingly showing promise for next year. This year has been a wonderful year for the Debating Society, and we hope that future years will be as fruitful. 96 Left to right, front— C. Pratt, C. Hryciw, J. Simpson. Second — P. Levesque, M. Sullivan. FRENCH CLUB Cercle Francais aims to cultivate in its members an interest in the French language and culture. To achieve this purpose we have fol- lowed each monthly business meeting with a French program. Included in these programs were a library corridor display, colored slides of the beautiful monuments and churches of Paris, a Christmas party, traditional and contemporary French songs, a film strip on the life of Moliere, discussion and presentation (in part) of Moliere’s “Le Malade Imaginaire,” and talks on the lives and work of famous French writers, artists and statesmen. Officers are Carol Hryciw, president; Paulette Levesque, vice-presi- dent; Claudette Pratt, secretary; John Simpson, treasurer; Marjorie Sullivan, program chairman Faculty advisor is Mr. Dale R. Silva. 97 Left to right, first row — N. BoteJho, S. Saleeba, P. Holewka, C. Shapiro. Second row — J. Kokoszka, L, Kaufman. E. Lifrak. GERMAN CLUB Dei Deutsche Verein, which meets bi-weekly, is one of the several modern language associations. Any student who is studying German or has studied German is eligible for membership. The main purpose of the club is to promote an interest in German life, culture and the language itself through various group activities. The year’s activities included films, a library corridor display, and Ger- man folk music. The club was very proud to have as a guest speaker at one of its meetings a German foreign exchange student, who spoke on various aspects of life in Germany. Officers for the year included President Claire Shapiro, Vice-Presi- dent Pat Holewka, Secretary Sandra Saleeba and Treasurer Nancy Botelho. Through the aid of our two able advisors, Mrs. James Pelletier the first half year, and Mr. James Keeley, the second half, the German Club completed another successful year. 98 Left to right — D, Delahanty, P. Placida, B. Cox, K. Medeiros, P. Spellman, HEALTH CLUB The main purpose of the Health Club is to promote health among Durfee students through the development of self-guidance in matters pertaining to physical well-being. Although membership is limited to the sophomore class, the club benefits the entire school. The successful outcome of the club was made possible through the cooperation and hard work of all its members under the supervision of Miss Angeline B. Crispo, faculty advisor. Officers are President Blanche Cox; Vice President Donna Dele- hanty; Secretary Kathleen Medeiros; Councillors Pamela Placido and Peggy Spellman 99 Left to right, front — C. Ormston D, Delahanty. E. HILLTOP Our bi-monthly newspaper completed its 42nd year of publication this June after much diligent work by the Journalism II class. Ed Deschenes, along with writing boys’ sports, headed a staff of 10 efficient girls, as editor. Donna Delahanty was business manager. Connie Ormston and Gerry Victorine co-authored “Odds ’n’ Ends” and the unusual “Countdown” was written by Carole Chappell. Polly Buf- fington’s “Campus Quotes” amused many while Gail Haggerty’s “Be- tween the Lines” and Claudette Dionne’s “Highlights on the Hill” kept everyone informed. On the more serious side, Cyn Gold and Penny Goldin wrote “Col- lege Comment,” a review for the college-bound student. Ginny McCarthy contributed much to the news end of the paper. 100 S. Black, A. Machado HOME ROOM DIRECTORS Home Room Directors, largest active organization in the school, is made up of two directors, a boy and a girl, from each home room. At the beginning of the year a meeting of all directors is held under the supervision of the faculty advisor, Mr. James Panos. Directors elect a senior as president and a junior as vice-president—secretary. Their duties consist of assisting in checking the daily attendance in the home rooms, in banking, and in reading bulletins. They also help conduct membership drives for the Students' Activities Association and the Red Cross. Tickets for various dances are sold by the home room directors. 101 Left to right — A. Reis, S. Herz, S. A. Filler, L, Bernstein. CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SOCIETY This organization was formed in November of 1962 for the purpose of providing pupils with a knowledge and appreciation of jazz. The club, which now has a membership of more than 75, has sponsored three con- certs featuring professional musicians, and attended a Dave Brubeck concert. Meetings, held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month, feature panel discussions, informative lectures and the playing of every type of jazz record. Officers are Lawrence Bernstein, president; Sigmund Herz, vice- president; Anthony Reis, secretary; Sara Anne Filler, treasurer, Mr. Ed- mond Machado is advisor. 102 Left to right — C. Gouveia, D, Drapeau, D. Gauvin. JUNIOR RED CROSS COUNCIL The Durfee council works tog-ether with the Greater Fall River Chapter of High School Red Cross, The purpose of this council is to give service to the community and to promote leadership. It is very active in providing entertainment for local orphans and patients in other institu- tions This year the council sponsored parties and dances in the local children's homes. The major activity of the year is the annual June outing at Camp Miles Stan dish, which is attended by 100 orphans. This year the council started an international album. The educational aims of the Red Cross council are civic responsi- bility, self-development, human relations, competent citizenship, and social competence. As members of the Red Cross, the students are playing their part in a great world team Officers are President Carol Gouveia, Vice-President Dianne Gauvin, Secretary Dianne Drapeau. 103 Left to right, front — F. Perhaps the key to this efficiency is a small but capable group of students known as Library Aides. These students, chosen from the Principal's List, have the responsi- bility of assisting Mr. Owen T. P, McGowan, librarian, in the upkeep of the library. Among their tasks are preparing books, issuing library passes, filing cards, working on corridor displays and helping students find re- search material. Monthly meetings are held and arrangements made for such activi- ties as displays for National Book Week and Shakespeare's 400th an- niversary. Outside activities include bowling parties, a cultural Spring outing and a beach party. The Aides are a necessity, for without them the Keeley library would not be such a helpful place for students. It is certainly worthwhile to be a member of this organization for it enables an Aide not only to share in many activities, but also to give much of his time to others. 104 Left to right — P. Stasiowski, E. Kuliopoutas, M, Shand. MATHEMATICS CLUB The Mathematics Club provides its members with opportunity for discussion concerning areas of mathematics not usually considered in class. Members conduct the discussions and usually act as speakers. The club is responsible for a library corridor display and the annual mathematics tournament to determine the school's entrants in regional contests. Social activities include a Christmas vacation event — this year a bowling party, — and the annual beach party. Officers are Michael L. Shand, president; Elleni Kuliopoulos, vice- president ; Peter Stasiowski, secretary-treasurer. 105 SILVERTONES Left to right, front — J. Ciosek. A. Martin, N, Nowak, K, Beiisle, A, Rocha. Second — L. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an honorary organization, the mem- bers of which are chosen from the upper five per cent of the junior class and upper 25 per cent of the senior class. These members are selected on the basis of their character, leadership, scholarship and service. The impressive induction ceremony held in the Spring exemplifies the four attributes. At this assembly the members recite the pledge of the society and receive their official membership cards. In the Fall, a coffee hour is held and the students have an opportunity to hear an outstanding speaker. New senior members are guests at a Spring tea. The group has for several years conducted a tutoring system. Pupils who have missed school through a prolonged illness or other reasons may apply for assistance. The society, with its emphasis on scholarship and other desirable character traits, holds a position of dignity in the school. Faculty advisor is Miss Mildred V. Carroll. 109 Left to righ— P. Oliveira, C. Oliveira, J. Arruda, J. Borges. PORTUGUESE CLUB Main objective of the club is to acquaint members with Portuguese customs and traditions. It also strives to increase their knowledge of Portuguese culture and interests them in outside activities. Membership of the organization consists of those who have achieved a mark of 75 or better in Portuguese. Members abide by the rules which are stated in the constitution of the club. The club promotes recreation for its members by organizing parties and outings. The activities during the current year were highlighted by a trip to the World’s Fair. Other activities included a Portuguese display in the library corridor and movies of Lisbon and St. Michael shown to the club by Mr. Edmond Machado. Under the guidance of Mr. Gilbert Cavaco, faculty advisor, the club has successfully fulfilled its function. no Left to right, first row — B. Morris, C. D’Elia, P. Spellman, S. Wilkinson, Y. The students who hold office are Peggy Spellman, president; Susan Wilkin- son, vice-president and Cynthia D’Elia, secretary. There are representatives elected by each sophomore home room class. These students, together with the president, vice-president, secre- tary and two health councillors from each class, make up the commis- sion. The main purpose of this commission is to make and enforce the health rules of the school. Any violators of these rules are tried, con- victed if guilty and sentenced by the commission to duties they think fit as punishment. Miss Angeline B. Crispo is faculty advisor. in Left to right — P. Cohen, P, Roberts, P. Petri SCIENCE CLUB Under the leadership of its officers, President Peter Petri, Vice- President Peter Roberts, Secretary Paul Cohen, and advisor Mr. James William Pelletier, the Science Club enjoyed a most profitable schedule during the 63-64 school year. The top lecturers of the local scientific community spoke at the meetings of the club, and the season was highlighted by the following talks; Prof. Conrad, Durfee College: “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance”; Dr. Ebert, Firestone Chief Engineer: “Synthetic Rubber”; Dr. Greer, Truesdale Hospital: “Atomic Energy in Medicine”; Dr. McKenna, Health Commissioner: “Smoking and Cancer”. Student talks, student-faculty discussions rounded out meeting schedules. The club also participated in FSA and SCA activities; delegates took part in the FSA workshop in Boston. Also of interest was the cor- respondence established with the Science Club at Balboa High School in the Canal Zone. Beside the academic program the club also participated in various social functions. Among these was the Christmas semi-formal, a field trip to Boston, and the usual year closing beach party. 112 Front — J. Maitoza, C. Parker. Second — K. Shabshelowitz, A. Garrick. WORLD HISTORY CLUB Officers for this year were President John Maitoza, Vice-President A1 Garrick, Secretary Karen Shabshelowitz and Treasurer Clinton Parker. The club has an enrollment of about 45 students, one of the largest extra-curricular clubs. This past year the club sponsored its annual trip to New York to the United Nations, a perennial success. Special activities for this school year included a drive to collect money for UNICEF which proved to be a huge success. Lectures, discussion groups and field trips also high- lighted this school year. The club's final activity was an outing held in June for all members. GIRLS BASKETBALL The 1964 season was a most successful one for the Durfee Girls Varsity Basketball team. After losing the crown by one basket in 1963, it was a dedicated group who accepted a 14-game schedule this year. Highlighting the season was the long anticipated game with Mount St. Marys. When the Durfee team saw their closest rival go down in defeat they accepted the challenge and succeeded in taking all the remaining games. At the Bristol County banquet the team will receive the league basketball trophy. Durfee High School will award each member an old English “D”. The team was composed of eight seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore. Captain Gail Motta led the group. Mary Ann Rooney was manager, and Miss Virginia Frost coached. 122 Front — C. Graci. Standing, left to right — M. Bergeron, A. Ouellette, E. Griffin, G. Motta, N. Cook, D, Faria, F, Lyons. GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The G.A.A. is an organization which endeavors to promote social development and good sportsmanship through leadership and participa- tion in athletics. The primary objective is to develop adept leaders who are capable of conducting gym classes, officiating a variety of games, and even assisting at other schools in the area. Early in the school year, by a vote of the membership, the decision was made to change the organization name from the Girls Numeral Club to the G.A.A, Although some felt this was shattering tradition the majority considered it a progressive move. The 1963-1964 activities fol- lowed the established schedule. In October intramural volleyball was sponsored and run by the G.A.A, Then the major event of the year, the Sophomore Girls Basketball Tournament was capably conducted during the Winter season. In the Spring there was participation in softball and recreational games. Awards were presented and activities closed after the annual club outing. Officers are Gail Motta, president; Lucy Ciesla, vice-president; Eileen Zawrotny, treasurer. Miss Virginia Frost is advisor. 123 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The editor and staff of this publication are grateful for the assistance rendered by many persons to make the book a success.
