Text from Pages 1 - 146 of the 1962 volume: “
We, the Class of 1962, proudly dedicate our Record Book to Mr. Antonio A. Serpa, an instructor in the Modern Language Department. Mr. Serpa has developed in his students an interest not only in the Portuguese language but also in the history, traditions and culture of the nation. His spirit, kindly disposition and tireless energy have been an inspiration to all who know him. In expressing our gratitude to him we offer also our sincere wishes for his continued health and happiness. i c A T I O N To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1962 of the B, M. C. Durfee High School: It is indeed a pleasure to have this opportunity to extend to the B. M. C. Durfee High School Class of 1962 my sincere congratulations and best wishes. In the years ahead, you will recall I am certain, the pleasant years you have had at Durfee. Wherever you go, whatever your future will be, you will be a part of the great stream of Durfee graduates, who have made contributions of various kinds all over the world. You go forth to a challenging time — one in many ways the most exciting of all that have gone before. The world differs from what it was in the past in that it demands increasingly higher measures of intellectual interest and achievement as well as increasingly higher standards of conduct and social concern. I am certain you will meet these standards and that Durfee has provided for you a firm foundation on which to build them. Again my very best wishes! Superintendent of Schools. To You, The Class Of 1962: “Sunt sua praemia laudi”. “Worth finds its due reward”. I know that this admonition expresses the innermost thoughts of the members of the graduating class of 1962. You have accomplished an educational objective and have set for yourselves high standards of moral value. I congratulate not only the fine graduates of the class of 1962 of B. M. C. Durfee High School, but also, the parents who have made this possible. You graduates possessed not only the native ability to pursue successfully a course of study, but inculcated in you was a sense of responsibility to live up to this God given gift. The example and guidance of a dedicated faculty enables you to approach your graduation in possession of high spiritual qualities, mentally keen minds, and the physical characteristics of a healthy body. It is my wish that in your future lives you enjoy good health, much happiness, and earned success. Endure to the end, and reserve yourselves for better fortunes. FACU LTY Robert J. VIEIRA FRESHMEN 1958- 1959 The swiftness with which the school years have thus far gone by has been surprising. The Class of 1962 now reminisces, recalling its first appearance in September, 1958, In December, freshman elections were held. Victorious candidates were Barry Machado, president; Arthur Teixeira, vice-president; Pat- ricia Farias, secretary, and Carolyn Kershura, councilor. The freshman basketball League got under way with four teams competing — Globes, Centrals, Bays and Flints. The 10 leading scorers were Bob Camara, Dave Benevides, Art Ferrance, Carl Viens, John Estrella, Earl Wright, Dave Froias, Tony Viveiros, Paul Riley and Bill Freitas. The two-way intercommunication system that gave the school its simultaneous signal startled students returning from vacation, and dedicated teachers were stressing the necessity of forceful expression. The varsity football season came to a climax with a Durfee 18-12 victory over NewT Bedford, A victory dance Thanksgiving night added to the excitement. All-A honors were attained by Genevieve Fernandes, David Froias, Carolyn A. Kershura, Marilyn Learned, Barry Machado, Ernest Moniz and Madeline B. Souza. SOPHOMORES 1959-1960 In early September graduates of the two junior high schools converged with Durfee freshmen in the Class of 1962, After spirited speeches and campaigning, Barry Machado was elected president; Marie Arruda, vice-president; Joyce Wahl, secretary, Betty Ann Keeley and Robert De srnara is, SAA councillors, and Diane Borges, SAA secretary. The class distinguished itself academically and consistently led all others in high scholarship. At the end of the third term those on the A11-A List were Madeline Belanger, Margaret Cabeceiras, Robert Des- marais, Susan Fearnley, Harriet Forman, David Froias, Carol Gregory, Lillian Labecki, Barry Machado, Anna Miller, Ernest Moniz, Walter Nichipor, Elaine Ratner, Kenneth Silk, Madeline Souza, and Anne Wright 91 Many of the classmates gained recognition in Durfee’s Science Fair, and Kenneth Silk was one of two exhibitors selected for the State Fair in Boston, Also, Lillian Labecki received the Sophomore English Award in the annual competitive examination. Sophomores were prominent in the Dramatics Club s presentation of “Heidi” and “The Diary of Ann Frank,” in the Music Department’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” and in the All-Student Review sponsored by the SAA. Sportswide, the year brought many new thrills and excellent competition. Many sophomores were already participants in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track and golf, and we were particularly proud that three, Manny Papoula, Gary Drewniak and Barry Machado, were on the starting basketball team. This year also saw the selection of cheerleaders Diane Borges, Susan Old rid, Geraldine Mello and Margaret Cabeceiras from a large turnout of candidates. In February, we were shocked and grieved by the sudden death of our principal, Ambrose F. Keeley. As a lasting memorial to this dedicated teacher, the Ambrose F. Keeley Scholarship Fund was started by the Student Council. Soon afterwards, Mr, Robert J. Nagle was welcomed as new principal. Two other changes are also memorable. At the end of January, Durfee’s new, excellently equipped language laboratory was completed. Students of modern languages were thus better able to improve their comprehension and speaking ability. Then, too, I960 saw the school’s first open house, arranged to give interested adults an opportunity to learn about our program, buildings and faculty. This occasion was particularly enhanced by the students’ participation in sample classes. JUNIORS 1960-1961 The time, September, 1960: we were juniors, upperclassmen, and we began to take a heartfelt pride in Durfee. A few firsts started off the year. Our first soccer team, unbeaten, claimed its first championship. The SAA started a book store. We took our first College Board Exam, the PSAT. We saw the election of the youngest President of the United States - John F. Kennedy, While Greek became the intellectual rage on the campus, football became the athletic rage on the playing field. With a new coach, Don Montle, the players won seven out of eight, losing only to Coyle. After the 6-0 upset over New Bedford, the gridmen felt the significance of 92 a Thanksgiving' Victory Dance. Winter brought the first annual Science Club Semi-Formal and various other social events. After the holidays, we all prepared for the basketball season. Our excellent team, composed mostly of juniors, and coached for the first time by Tom Karam, compiled an awesome record in the Bristol County League before bowing to New Bedford in the finals at Boston Garden. On the JV slate there was an undefeated season. Scholastics soon slanted to the All-A List and the Principal’s List, while many of us appeared in the winning columns as a reward for our efforts. We received a new language laboratory, and the book store was renamed The Varsity Shop by contest winner Betty Keeley. The annual Career Day found us in conference with leaders in our future occupations, and Merit Scholarship Day found us striving for merit. Spring came, and with it the Science Fair and the National Honor Society Induction. A few privileged juniors were added to the ranks of the society. Tennis, golf, and track put our athletes in strong conten- tion for titles, especially in track, where -we lost to Fairhaven by a fraction of a point. Baseball was also well represented. The third term ended with good junior representation on the honor rolls. Ten made All-A, and 59 made the Principal’s List. The Junior Prom took place on May 26. Barry Machado wfas later elected to the presidency of our senior class. And so the famed “hardest year” of high school ended for us, accented by great expectations of the coming Fall. SENIORS 1961-1962 Our senior year has been memorable. The cross country team, coached by Mr. Clinton Borden, completed its season with four wins and three losses. Outstanding competitors were Arthur Me Andrew, William Perry, William Lopes and Thomas Gibney. Our team won the Bi-State Soccer League championship by defeating New Bedford in a playoff. 93 With a record of five and three the football team, coached by Mr. Donald Montle, placed second in the Bristol County League. Seniors ending their careers were Edward Gromada, Daniel Pontes, Paul Rilev, Fred Senay, Donald Carey, Robert Will is ton, Bob Bonalewicz, Arthur Ferrance, Everett Viens, Henry Urban, Roger Souza and Terry McMahon. A most successful season was enjoyed by the basketball team, coached by Mr. Thomas Karam. The Hilltoppers had a 21-2 record. Manny Papoula received the George Kaplan Memorial Award. The Cadets Corps was reorganized under the direction of Mr. Vincent Fitzgerald before lie was called into active military service. Mr. Mannis Shapiro succeeded him. William A. Green was commanding officer with rank of colonel and William R. Dube was named lieutenant colonel and executive officer. In the regional drama festival the Dramatics Club’s presentation of “Mary Stuart” received a good share of awards. Membership in the National Honor Society was awarded to 100 seniors. Elected Class Day Speakers were Joyce Rodrigues, history; Dwight Cook, prophecy, and Pauline A. Pereira, will. Appointed to head the Business Club were Patricia Voyles, president; Irene Carvalho, vice-president; Carol Gregory, secretary, and Elizabeth Quintal, historian. Elizabeth Ann Keelev received the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award, Walter Nichipor was elected Student Government Day representative, Kenneth Silk was named nmnerup in the National Teachers of English Achievement Contest and Michael Wojcik received a General Electric Fellowship. We look forward to a bright and happy future. 94 Left to right, first row — E. Keeley, I. Costa, D. Borges, M. Sullivan, K. Duilio, M. Arruda, S. Elias. Second row — G. Drewniak, R. Machado. B. Stroilo STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students1 Activities Association, center of all student activities, is the only organization in which membership is open to all students. The Student Council, which serves as its governing body, fosters extra- curricular activities and strives for improvements in the school. Officers are President Diane Borges, Vice-President Michael Sullivan, and Secretary Kathleen Dulio. The council also includes senior class officers, presidents of other classes, seven councillors, and the presidents of the Home Room Directors and National Honor Society, In September, the council issued S.A.A. guide books to orientate freshmen and sophomores. In December, we sponsored a Fall sports' banquet to honor the football team, soccer team, cross-country team, cheerleaders, majorettes, and band. In November and May delegates attended Southeastern Massachusetts Student Council Conventions. The social calendar included the Harvest Hop, Pigskin Hop, Christmas Dance and Spring Dance. A Recognition Assembly was held in May to honor students outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service. Awards were presented to class and club officers, athletes, and special award recipients. Faculty advisors are Mr. Samuel Swidey, Miss Marianne Sahib and Miss Dorothy Urban. 95 Left to right, S. Lavallee, B. Quintal, A. Perron. P. Voyles. BANK CASHIERS Since the banking program started at Durfee, Tuesday has been designated as Bank Day. Believing in the maxim, “Plan for the future today ' students increase their savings on this day each week. Deposits are collected in home rooms during the opening exercises and placed in large envelopes which are delivered to the cashiers in the office of the Durfee building and Technical building. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross is made up of students who are interested in improving their community through participation in many worthwhile projects. The first project of the council is the annual three-day enrollment drive. This year 1440 students became members. Another annual project is the Junior Aide Program in which many girls devote three or more hours each week in doing volunteer work in the local hospitals. A new project is the Orphanage Buddy Program in which many students take orphans out on weekends and spend their time helping to do good for those who have little. One of the greatest projects is the widely-known, 15-minute radio program, “Juniors Speak” presented weekly through the courtesy of a local radio station. This program, which enlightens many people about the conscientious work being accomplished by the Juniors, is prepared and executed by Michael Bednarz, a Durfee student, who has complete charge of the program. The Red Cross Chapter House on Underwood Street is the heart of all Red Cross activity in Fall River. From here, guest speakers and interesting films are provided for the monthly meetings held at Durfee, which are ehairmanned by an officer of the Durfee Council. LIBRARY AIDES One of the main aspects of our school is its efficient and complete library. Perhaps the key to this efficiency is a small but capable group of students known as Library Aides. These students, chosen from the PrincipaFs List have the responsibility of assisting Miss Carrie T. Foulkes, librarian, in the upkeep of the library. Among their manifold tasks are preparing books, filling out library passes, and aiding other pupils in their selection of proper reading and reference material. The Aides meet as a group on the second Tuesday of every month. This year under the leadership of Lillian Labecki, president; Judy Cummings, vice-president; Kenneth La Pane, secretary; Arthur Bliss, treasurer and Nancy Tepper, program chairman, the club has had a full and busy schedule of activities. These include a bowling party, a Christmas party, a panel on Russian literature, a cultural Spring outing, and various discussions and book reports. The library program is also enriched by the work of Joyce Rodrigues and Albert Ouellette who have been mainly responsible for preparing the displays on the United Nations, Bookwreek, Christmas and Russian Culture. no Left to right— P. Medeiros, P. Hirschman, E. Moniz. MATHEMATICS CLUB Once again the Mathematics Club has had an active and a rewarding year. The reason for this is obvious-—the high calibre of its members. Each February and June, they are elected into the club on the basis of teachers’ recommendations and academic standing. Proof of this high scholastic ability lies in the requirement that each be on the All-A or Principal's List and maintain an average of 85 per cent in mathematics. The aim of the club was to acquaint the members with and to generate an interest in the theories of modern math. At each meeting, some phase of this complex and absorbing field was discussed, starting with the theory of sets and including the binary system and digital computers, fn this way, members became better prepared to meet rigorous college mathematics courses. Under the guidance of our faculty advisor, Mr. Edward Carey, the club held a bowling party in the month of January. Early in March, the club exhibit was displayed in the library corridor, and later in the month, the annual Mathematics Tournament was held, the three highest scorers being sent to the state tournament in Newton. ill SELVERTONES Left to right, first row— R. The large vocal groups perform for various assemblies during the year and also present Christmas and Spring concerts for the public. The band plays for football games, outdoor assemblies and parades, and presents a concert. The orchestra joins the vocal groups in assemblies and concerts, and plays for Class Day and Graduation. 113 Left to right—K. Silk, P. Medeiros, D. Froias. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is the only organization to which students are elected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and service. Each Spring, juniors and seniors chosen from the upper 25 percent of their classes are inducted into the Mu Kappa Delta Chapter at a formal ceremony. In a traditional manner the four characteristics of the members are symbolized by the lighting of four torches. The society holds two social functions during the year, a coffee hour in the Fall, and a silver tea in the Spring. This year, under the leadership of David Froias, president; Patricia Medeiros, vice-president and Kenneth Silk, secretary, special programs were planned to celebrate (he 25th anniversary of the society in Ourfee, The charter was granted in October 1936; the charter members, elected in June 1937. Tutoring service is given by senior members to students who have been absent from school because of prolonged illness. Also this year, senior members began helping other students in their studies when a teacher recommended the pupil for tutoring. The faculty advisors are Miss Mildred V. Carroll, Miss Yolande Laliberte and Principal Robert J, Nagle. 114 Left to right, first row—C. Pacheco, C. Moniz, J. Souza, J. Fonseca. Second row — M. Lopes, C. Manning, E. Serpa, K. A major undertaking of the club was I he renovation of the observatory, through work done by the club members. Three new affiliate groups were created: Physics Affiliate, Biology Affiliate, and Chemistry Affiliate. The object of each group — the performance of scientific research under the guidance of a faculty member. The club became an accredited chapter of the national organization, Future Scientists of America. Favorable publicity was also accorded the club by the selection of the president, Michael M. Wojcik, as one of 40 winners in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. The club was fortunate in hosting Dr. Cromer, a visiting lecturer, from Northeastern University under a grant from the National Physics Teachers Association. Dr. Cromer lectured to science pupils at the assembly and class visits. An active year for the club was climaxed by the Science Fair which had grown from a school function to a regional fair encompassing much of Southeastern Massachusetts. The fair held at the Dwelly Street Armory March 23, 24, and 25 was a great success. The social aspect of the club was not neglected. The Semiformal, held a White’s in December, was most successful and enjoyed by all. The club’s activities were concluded with a beach party in the Spring. 117 Left to right, first row — P. A major event for sophomores is the Sophomore Basketball Tournament offered by the club. The games are organized, officiated, scored, and timed by members of the G. N. C. Through the establishment of these activities, the club is trying to promote sports and good sportsmanship for girls at this school. 133 BEST WISHES from FALL MYEE AREA C. Y.
