It was not long before we learned that the cafeterias were not on the third floor of the Durfee building, and very soon we became accustomed to the daily routine of high school life. Election of class oiicers took place in December and we chose Bernice Medeiros, presidentg Raymond Medeiros, vice-president, Sandra LaForest, secretary, and Rochelle Massoud, councillor to the S.A.A. The Hilltoppers captured Bristol County honors and appeared in Boston Garden for the thirteenth straight year. During our freshman year, Charles Cipollini, Pauline Leite, Rochelle Massoud, and Edmund Ward made the All-A List. Many others were on the Principal's List. We looked forward to the coming year when we would meet new friends from Morton and Henry Lord. SOPHOMORES '57-'58 Here we are, sophomores at Durfee, looking forward to a good year of sports, dance, club meetings-and hard work. An exciting football season was climaxed, as usual, with the Durfee- New Bedford game, the latter winning, 7-0. The Hilltoppers played hard and well all season. Election of officers in December brought the following results: Patricia Darmody, president, Ronald Mollo, vice-president, Nancy Cabral, secretaryg JoAnn Case and Robert Yule, councillors, Judith Wilmarth, SAA secretary. Bristol County champions for the 10th time in the last 11 years, with a record of 12 wins and two losses, the basketball team competed in the Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Tournament for the 14th consecutive year. The Hilltoppers bowed out in the preliminary round, losing to Salem. 94 Attaining highest scholastic honors on the All-A List were Patricia Cabral, Robert Cabral, Judith Cohen, Stafford Kay, Pauline Leite, Alice Medeiros, Anne Moniz, George W. Moran, Estelle Sacknoff, Gerald Santos and Paula Schwartz. Our baseball team won the Bristol County championship for the ninth straight year and the track team had a good season. JUNIORS '58-'59 After a trying but successful sophomore year, we become juniors. The following were elected class leaders for the year: JoAnn Case, president, Ronald Mollo, Vice-president, Joan Cross, secretary, Bernice Medeiros, SAA vice-president, Sandra LaForest and Robert Yule, councillors. As juniors we met a new phase of English, public speaking. Under the direction of Miss Barbara Wellington classes were conducted once a week during the English period for a half-year A public speaking contest which climaxed the course was won by John Peters. Throughout the year our activities were numerous. Sometimes our studies were affected, but for the most part we were well represented scholastically on the Principal's List and the All-A List. Along with .a larger number of seniors, 40 juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. The social event of the year was, of course, the Junior Prom, held for the first time at the new Dwelly Street Armory. Planning the affair besides the class officers were George Moran, Lois Murphy, Stafford Kay, Patricia Racette, Anne Marie Mello, Patricia Carvalho, Marilyn Carreiro. Also Sheila Crowley, Arthur Faria, Carolyn Hammond, Henry Hodg- son, Harold Katersky, Nine Lepes and Joan Chew. All who attended spent a most enjoyable evening. 95 SENIORS '59-'60 September 1959! As the leading class of Durfee High, we elected Jo-Ann Case, president, Ronald Mollo, vice-president, Sandra Cook, sec- retary, Sandra LaForest, president of the SAA, Kenneth Brooks, president of the Home Room Directors, and Robert Yule, president of the National Honor Society. Appointed to the head of the Hilltop staff were Shirley Bannister, editor, Sandra Candeias, business manager, and David Mat- thews, sports editor. The Music Department for the first time presented members of the band, orchestra, and vocal groups with Durfee D's for service to the school. All the plays put on by the Dramatic Club were a huge success. Directing the football team were Co-Captains Kenneth Brooks and Lee Woltman. Robert Machado was presented the Jake Reagan Memorial Trophy at the annual football banquet. The cheerleaders and majorettes added much color and enthusiasm to football and basketball games of the year. Staiord Kay was elected delegate for Student Government Day. In the annual senior tournament George Moran, Leah Spiro, and alternate, Paula Schwartz, were debating champions. As usual the annual Varsity Show was well patronized by both students and friends. Judith Cohen and Estelle Sacknoff were named the two highest ranking students of our class. Ninety seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. The following names appeared on the All-A List: Rochelle Massoud, Lois Murphy, John Pietruska, Estelle Sacknoff and Thomas Venice. At a senior assembly, the prom, gift, and advisory committees were appointed. As our senior year draws to a close, we hold fond memories of our high school days, and look forward to the times when we will once again meet for our class reunions. 96 ff ZW W W ff W , Q . STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students' Activities Association exists to bring all extra-curricular activities under the control of a central organization. It is the only organization Whose membership is open to all students. The Student Council serves as its governing body and, in addition, is responsible for school social functions. To emphasize the importance and permanency of senior class offices, the vice-president and secretary of this class were admitted to the Student Council. In September the Council issued S.A.A. Guide Books to help with the orientation of freshmen and sophomores. Later in the month, the S.A.A. membership drive was conducted. The social calendar included the Harvest Hop, the Pigskin Hop, the Christmas Dance, the Mid-Winter Hop, and the Spring Dance. At the close of the gridiron season, a Football Banquet was held to honor the members of the squad. Recognition Night was held in May to honor outstanding students in leadership, scholarship, and service. Awards were presented to class and club officers, athletes, and special award recipients. S.A.A. officers are President Sandra LaForest '60, Vice-President Rosemary Quong '61, and Secretary Diane Borges '62, Faculty advisors are Miss Yolande B. Laliberte, Miss Alice C. Most pupils, from freshmen to seniors, take advantage of the opportunity to save for the future. During the first Week of June, there is Pay-Cff Day. Seniors must take out their savings, or transfer them to new adult accounts. The average savings by students amount to about S500--8700, as the result of 12 years' savings. Cashiers are stationed in each building to receive the deposits every Tuesday morning from the home rooms. After a report is made, these deposits are securely locked in a special bank bag, after which they are picked up by the bank messengers. Mr. George C. Hoar, head of the business department, is in charge of high school banking. He Works in conjunction with Mr. Francis Buswell and Mr. James Robinson of the B. M. C. Here, freshman classes are conducted in guided reading and all stu-lents do much every-day research work, or spend their leisure time reading books and magazines. In order to help the librarian handle the large classes and the numerous researchers, in addition to the many details of keeping a well-organized, smoothly running library and expanding it each year, our Library Aides perform regular and special duties when called upon. All Aides are chosen because of their scholastic records, character and willingness to serve their school. Monthly meetings are held and arrangements made for such library activities as panels, literary contests and parties. Talented artists within and outside the group make posters and suitable and attractive decorations for Book Week and Christmas, carrying on the tradition of presenting two displays that have always met with appreciation from faculty and students alike. In the past two years book panel discussions have been held over the two local radio stations under the auspices of the Library Aides. All is not work, however, as two or three parties are held each year and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Miss Carrie T. Foulkes is faculty advisor. 112 iw Www MATHEMATICS CLUB Left to right-G. Santos, P. For the past twenty years the activities and accomplishments recorded here have reflected the inspiration and the outstanding teaching ability of Louis J. Urban, coach of football, basketball and baseball. No teacher with whom we have come in contact in Durfee has given more to the school and its students. Admirably equipped for his task with training and experience in interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional sports, he has devoted all his talents, his energy and knowledge to make Durfee known and respected in the highly competitive field of interscholastic athletic competition. Not only the boys who have benefited directly from his instruction, but the entire student body owe him a debt of gratitude which can be expressed only inadequately in words. With the graduation of the Class of 1960, Coach Urban retires from his position as head coach of these sports. To him this Class, in its own behalf and in behalf of nineteen preceding classes, offers a sincere, Thank you. 124 A 2 fb 1 1' ,nf 4 , M . , ,K ,A zyw , LE I 1 fs K f X f f if . , E! 22 , '1 ff -M ,,h,,,,. FOOTBALL The Hilltoppers' football team this past year did not enjoy a fruitful season. The squad was handicapped at the outset by injuries and they couldn't quite pull into the Win column. Much Commendation is due Coach Urban in this, his last year as Durfee coach. The varsity was composed mostly of seniors with Ken Brooks, co- captain and end, Dan O'Connell, centerg Bob Machado, halfback. Others Who saw action were Gerry Kehoe, Roger Simpson, Mike Ryerson, Bob LeCombe and Jim Higgenbottom. The Hilltoppers lost to their traditional rival, New Bedford High, at Sargent Field. Bob Machado was the recipient of the Jake Reagan Memorial Trophy. 128 . .ff , f ' V f Q - f', ' ' 48 ' 2 '. ww' .H C M y f MRF5 juan: it gl 42 ,liar .WRT Y v is A X- 4 f f G 4. 'K W! .' BASKETBALL During the regular season Durfee came through with an eight to four recordg the last two games were cancelled because of the death of Principal Keeley. The starting lineup included only two members of the Class of 1960- Don Murray, captain, center and runnerup in the seas0n's scoring honors, and Ray Gomes, a forward. Another senior who also saw service was Ken Brooks, a three-letterman. The most thrilling game of the season was played against New Bedford High at the Armory. With the usual capacity crowd on hand to watch the Durfeeites, an inexperienced Hilltopper hoop squad defeated the previously unbeaten Whalers. 129 BASEBALL Because the opening of the baseball season comes simultaneously with the deadline for Record Book copy, this record must be confined to a preview of Durfee's 1960 diamond activities. A promising group of players including many members of the Class of 1960 have been practicing diligently under the tutelage of Coach Urban. The squad is expected to give a good account of itself. 6 TENNIS This year's tennis team will open an eight game schedule after two years of few wins. Four senior returnees on the squad are Captain Clark Brodeng Peter Kane, Hillard Forman and Paul Earle. TRACK In this year of interscholastic competition the Red and Black will open an eight-game meet with Coach Borden at the helm. Bob Machado was elected captain and Tom Tavares was captain of the reactivated cross- country team. Other members of the Class of 1960 who were active in track were Stan Dubitsky, Ron Mollo, Dick Freeman, Bob Gagnon and Barry Wall. GOLF Coach Nugent experienced his finest year with the links team last year. They finished fourth behind New Bedford, Dartmouth and Coyle in regular Bristol County Matches. It was also the first year the Hilltoppers were represented in the schoolboy golf championships at Unicorn. This feat was accomplished by two members of the Class of 1960-Bob Placido, captain of this year's team, and George Pacheco. Among other members of this year's graduating class who helped make this representation possible were Jason Kotlen, Richie Roy, Ed Powers, and Howie Puhn. The regular schedule will have started the second week in May. 130 Left to right-L. Woltman, R. Maucione, K. Brooks, J. Sullivan. VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is an organization whose membership is made up of all boys who have earned a letter D for participation in a varsity sport. The officers are Kenneth Brooks, Robert Maucione, Lee Woltman and John Sullivan. The faculty advisor to the club is Mr. Louis J. Urban. One of the main events on the social calendar at Durfee is the Varsity Show which is presented annually by the club and directed most ably by Mr. Joseph B. D'Adamo, Mr. Vincent Fitzgerald and other members of the faculty. The show enjoyed its usual success and the athletes looked and acted like good showmen. The show was highlighted each night by the crowning of the Varsity King and Queen. As always, this was a very colorful and thrilling event. The funds raised by the sale of tickets to the show were used to buy jackets and blazers for the members of the club. 131 gee 3 Ze 5 Left to right, front row-B. Medeiros, B. Barnaby, M. Cotter, J. Faria. Second row-C. Hammond, D. McCrossan, J. Smith, J. Flynn, M. Moran. The cheerleading squad is composed of nine girls, five of Whom are CHEERLEADERS seniors and four juniors. Cheerleaders are active in both football and basketball games. They also add color and variety to the Varsity Shows that are held yearly. The girls' colorful uniforms and bright smiles help to foster school spirit among loyal rooters. In the spring of her sophomore year any girl Who is attaining a requisite of seventy per cent in all her subjects is eligible to try out for the school squad. At the end of every football season, every cheerleader attends the annual football banquet Where they receive their letter with a megaphone insignium. Head cheerleader is chosen by the senior members of the squad and the faculty advisor, Miss Nancy Carroll. 132 pp l Left to right, first row-M. Venancio, E. Bailey, J. Wilmarth. Second row-C. Kalil, S. Sampson, C, Larrivee, S. Cook, S. Barnes. MAJORETTES At the pep rallies, football games, parades, and the basketball tournament at Boston Garden, eight girls perform routines to the lively music of the school band. For the past two years they have also performed at the home basketball games. With their colorful uniforms and bright smiles these girls, known as majorettes, help to foster school spirit. The ambition of many Durfee girls is to be selected as a majorette. Each year at the beginning of the fourth term tryouts are held. All sophomore girls who have passing marks in all subjects are eligible. They are selected by two members of the faculty and the current majorettes. The selection of head majorette takes place in May. Judges comprising two teachers and one outside person select the girl they feel best qualified in terms of her leadership and twirling abilities. At the annual football banquet each girl receives a D with a baton insignium. The faculty advisor of the majorettes is Miss Alice Harrington. 133 Left to right, first row-J. Buffington, D. Picard, B. GIRLS' NUMERAL CLUB From September to June members of the Girls' Numeral Club organize, officiate, coach, and often participate in all athletic activities at Durfee High School. In recognition for projects accomplished the students receive annual awards. The 1959-1960 school year was a busy one. In the Fall the club sponsored a volleyball tournament for four intra-school teams. Next, a double elimination basketball tournament comprised of 19 sophomore teams was successfully concluded. This Was followed by the annual fistball and softball tournaments. Many members chose to serve as leaders in the gym classes. Others volunteered to assist in coaching and officiating at the grammar schools and Morton Junior High. The concluding events of the year consisted of the spring outing and the Alumnae invitation meeting for senior members. 9 134 R K Clockwise from C. Berube, with ball-M. Ventura, C. Buffington, P. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Durfee girls, as participating members in the Bristol County Girls' League, opened their season early in December with a 12 game schedule. An additional practice game was also played during the holidays with a group of Alumnae as opponents. The 14 girls who comprised the team qualified for an invitation to the sports banquet sponsored by the league. At this gala affair trophies Were awarded and a challenging and inspiring address was delivered by a woman athlete. Players Who fulfilled team requirements received an Old English D , at the June annual awards night. Veteran Claudette Berube was team captain. The group was coached by Miss Virginia W.
