Text from Pages 1 - 138 of the 1959 volume:

To Miss Mary Judge, in recognition of her many years of patient, devoted teaching and sincere interest in the students of B.M.C. Durfee High School, we, the Class of 1959, proudly dedicate this Record Book. TO MEMBERS OF THE 1959 GRADUATING CLASS OF THE B.M. C DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL Please accept my sincerest congratulations and my best wishes on this, the occasion of your graduation from Durfee. Behind you now are several years in which you have had the truly American opportunity of preparing yourselves for early adulthood. Many of you will use this training to go on to higher education and will find that your education is based to a large extent on what you have been taught and what you have learned in your high school Others of you will take up immediately adult responsibilities. You will rely even more on the formal education you have received thanks to the citizens of Fall River who have supported you. The world into which you go will expect to find you able to accept the many roles which the times provide. I feel certain that under the guidance of your teachers and your parents you have matured to a point where you will not be found wanting. With you ride the hopes of all of us and the sincere expectations that you will live lives creditable to your parents, your community and the nation. Again my very best wishes! To the Class of ]959: In graduating; from B. M. CL Durfee High School, you reach a long-anticipated milestone. Your parents, relatives, and friends are proud of you; and I hasten to add my congratulations to theirs. Here at Durfee you have displayed a growing maturity. You have been willing to assume responsibilities both in the more challenging work of the classroom and in the varied extra- curricular activities of the school. Each one of you has benefited, I am sure, from daily contact with sincere teachers and from the many opportunities to demonstrate individuality, resourcefulness, and eagerness to take directions. These qualities, coupled with a sense of direction and a seriousness of purpose in your life, and strengthened by a determination to do your best, come what will, are guarantees of success Whether you turn now to the world of work or to continued education, it is my sincere hope that the future will be bright indeed and that you will enjoy continued good health and happiness. Elections were held early in the freshman year, and successful candidates were Sylvia Oliveria, president; Margaret Fletcher, vice-president; Delores Andrade, secretary; and Judith Lund, councillor. Representing the freshman class on the All-A list were Maria Cabral, Mary Lou Clark, Nancy Driscoll, Gerald Duggan, Margaret Fletcher, Adrianne Levine and Mary Lyons. With Charlie Carey, Carl Costa and Al Lavoie on the football squad, Durfee defeated New Bedford in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. Durfee students saw a similar record in basketball as Durfee took the New England Championship at Boston Garden. However, most basketball players in the freshman class were found playing in the Freshman League against Lord and Morton. Performing in the S.A.A. assembly were Maria Rebello, James Goncalo, Armand Martini and James Wilcox. SOPHOMORES Undefeated in county play, the Durfee eleven climaxed the season by trouncing New Bedford 30-0 in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. This was the third victory in a row for the Hilltoppers. Class elections brought many new members into office. Ronald Strum- inski was elected president; Judith Wilkinson, vice-president; Judith Saurette, secretary; Jane Dubiel, SAA secretary; Carolyn Walsh and Jim Keelev, SAA councillors. In basketball, we captured the Bristol County title, but lost to Boston College High in the Tech Tournament. On the All-A List for the third term were Mary Lou Clark, Gerald P. Duggan, Daniel McDonald, Mary P. Lyons, Richard L. Levine, Sheldon Isenberg, Rita A. Castanho, Adrianne P. Levine, Suzanne Guillotte and Nancy J. Sugarman. 82 JUNIORS Considered now as upper classmen, most juniors returned in September wfith a serious mind toward their studies and activities. All-A honors went to Philip Coelho, Gerald Duggan, Marilyn Habib, Sheldon Isenberg, Mary Lyons, Mariano Rodriques, Joseph Shaw and Nancy Sugarman. The foot- ball season saw some returning lettermen under Manager William McMahon. Many juniors continued to make up the varsity basketball team. Following the basketball season Isabel Caya and Dale Fairtile were chosen head cheerleader and majorette, respectively. Juniors winning prizes in the annual Science Fair were William McMahon, Mary Lou Clark, Richard Levine, Nancy Manchester, Anne Roy, Ronald Turowitz and John Viera. Eligible juniors took the Merit Scholarship Examination, and 34 class members were inducted into the National Honor Society. The “Outer Space” Junior Speaking Contest was won by Sheldon Isenberg while suc- cessful candidates for senior class offices were James Keeley, president; Nancy Manchester, vice-president; Judith Wilkinson, secretary; SAA president, Jane DuBiel; Councillors Anna DeCamp and Daniel McDonald; Editor of Record Book, Judith Leyland; Business Manager, Dale Fairtile; President of the Sanitation Commission, Alice Arruda. The year closed with the juniors proudly sporting their rings at a traditional Junior Prom. SENIORS September, 1958 . . . the class of 1959 returned to Durfee to assume leadership of the student body. Jane DuBiel, president of the SAA announced the first dance of the year, the Harvest Hop. Three senior Thespians—Alice Arruda, Mary Frances Gibney and Suzanne Guillote assisted in the production of T.N.T. Appointed to head the Hilltop staff were Lester Kretman, editor; Kenneth Racette, business manager; Robert Nulman, sports editor. After a year of hard work, the band was able to display their stylish new uniforms to the public. This organization, along with the majorettes and cheerleaders, did a wonderful job of bolstering school spirit, especially at athletic competition. The football team, captained by quarterback Stan Kupiec, completed a successful 6-1 grid season with a tremendous victory over New Bedford in the traditional Thanksgiving Day clash. Charlie Carey was presented with the Jake Reagan Memorial Trophy at the annual football banquet. 83 Other teams took honors. The girls' varsity basketball team, composed almost entirely of seniors, finished second in league standing with an admirable record of eight wins and two losses. Also bringing honor to Durfee was the debating team, whose 7-1 record gave Durfee first place in the Narragansett League. James Keeley, class president, was elected to represent Durfee on Student Government Day, and Judith Leyland was chosen to receive the D.A.R. Good Citizenship award. It was a year of progress . . . traditional bells were replaced by a beep-like tone when the new inter-com system was installed, and a three- day evaluation sponsored by the New7 England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools was conducted with favorable results. Recognizing Durfee’s high scholastic standards, top colleges and universities all over the country have accepted members of the class of '59. Sheldon Isenberg, Richard Levine, and James Keeley attained fame in the senior debating tournament. Gerald Duggan, Alan Elias, John Vieira, and John Barresi were named winners of the ninth annual mathematics club tournament. Appearing on the All-A list were Judith Crowley, Gerald Duggan, Dale Fairtile, Margaret Fletcher, Mariano Rodrigues and Nancy Sugarman. An exciting basketball season was climaxed by Tech Tourney play at the Boston Garden. Outstanding senior lettermen included Dick Bona- lewicz, Charlie Carey, John Connell, Gary Hathaway, and Stan Kupiec who received the Kaplan Memorial Trophy, the most valuable player award. Varsity Show performers revealed hidden talents. Ken Burton’s hula and Charlie Carey’s soft shoe routine were classics. Crowned queens were Dale Fairtile, Frances Nawrocki, and Carolyn Walsh. Reigning with them were Dick Bonalewicz, John Connell, and Stan Kupiec. Gerald Duggan and Richard Levine were named the two highest ranking members of the class. Ninety seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. More honors were attained when three out of four top prizes in the Annual Science Fair wrere captured by seniors. The events of our last week . .. Class Day, Graduation, and the Prom . . . will never be forgotten. Let us remember with pride the history of the class of 1959, and let us look to the future with faith and hope. 84 Left to right, Seated—B. Medeiros. J. DuBiel, R. Quong. Standing—B, Machado, J. STUDENTS ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students’ Activities Association exists to bring all extra-curricular activities under the control of a central organization. It is the only organization whose membership is open to all students. The Student Council serves as its governing body and, in addition, is responsible for school social functions. To emphasize the importance and permanency of senior class offices, the vice-president and secretary of this class were admitted to the Student Council. In September the Council issued S.A.A. Guide Books to help with the orientation of freshmen and sophomores. Later in the month, the S.A.A. membership drive was conducted. The social calendar included the Harvest Hop, the Pigskin Hop, the Thanksgiving Victory Celebration, the Christmas Dance, the Mid-Winter Hop, and the Spring Dance. At the close of the gridiron season, a Football Banquet was held to honor the members of the squad. Recognition Night was held in May to honor outstanding students in leadership, scholarship and service. Awards were presented to class and club officers, athletes, and special award recipients. S.A.xA. officers are President Jane DuBiel ’59. Vice-President Bernice Medeiros ’60, and Secretary Rosemary Quong ’61. Faculty advisors are Miss Yoiande B. Laliberte, Miss Alice C. Harrington and Mr. Joseph B. D’Adamo. 86 Left to right—C, Ferreira, P. Machado, P. Oliveira, BANK CASHIERS Tuesday is always Bank Day here. Students of Durfee deposit over $600 on an average each week. The money is collected by home room representatives and taken to the offices in either Durfee or Tech building These cashiers receive the money envelopes and list the home rooms together with the total amounts. In this way they can check on those home rooms which are either delayed or who do not deposit. The cashiers are reliable and have very rarely been absent on Bank Day. Mr. Buswell and Mr, Robinson of B. M, C. Durfee Trust Company wish to express their sincere thanks for a job well done. Mr. George C. Hoar, director of the business department, is the co-ordinator. 87 Left to right—D. Pimental, A. Mello, M. Rebello. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is composed of students interested in photography who wish to learn the techniques necessary to develop a good picture. To stimulate interest in photography, a group of students is taken to the dark room to see the process of developing pictures and then they do the actual developing of film. Extra proofs can be made from negatives, and enlarging is also practiced. Some of the activities of the club are talks by professional photographers, an annual photographic exhibit consisting of prints from the National High School Photographic Awards Contest, various seasonal parties, and a combined field trip and outing at the end of the year. The officers are Maria A. Rebello, president; Anne Marie Mello, vice-president; Dorothy Pimental, secretary. The faculty advisor is Mr. Joseph J. Law lor. 88 Left to right, First row—E, Smith, E. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club, one of the school’s newer organizations, is a refuge for those students who seek an atmosphere of serenity and enjoyment. It offers its members the opportunity to develop a facility for methodical thinking by the playing of the game of chess itself. The year was highlighted by a match with a team from the Warwick Veterans1 Memorial High School. Durfee played host to that school. Officers were President Ephraim Smith, Vice-President Edward Soczek, Secretary-Treasurer John Medeiros, Co-ordinator Charles Cippolini. Mr. James W. Pelletier served as club advisor. 89 Left to right, First row— M. Lyons, J. Levine, J. Crowley, N. Manchester, J. Leyland. Second row—C. Liebmann, N. Sugarman, R. Massoud, G. Moran, R. A medal will be awarded to an outstanding junior in the third year of Latin on the basis of a competitive test. It was instituted last year and Mary Lyons was the first recipient. The award will be given at the end of this year and every year. Activities for the year included a display in the library corridor presenting relics of ancient Greece and Rome, singing of Christmas Carols in Latin, and many talks about Roman life and legend. 90 Left to right,—R. Castanho, J. Saurette, A, Talbot. COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club opened its busy season with a reception for new members on Oct, 1. A Hallowe’en party acquainted old and new members despite the costume disguises. THE MOVING FINGER wrote our dramatic season with T.N.T., three one-act plays, The Birthday of the Infanta, Goodbye to the Clown and The Moving Finger. On that night some members received notice of their acceptance into the National Thespian Society. They were inducted at a banquet held in November with many attending this social event. THE MOVING FINGER wrote a full page feature in the Sunday Standard Times of our annual children’s matinee, Simple Simon. THE MOVING FINGER was Durfee's entry in the annual Massachusetts Drama Festival which was held at Silver Lake Regional High School. Durfee had charge of the acquaintance dance at John Hancock Hall during the state finals of this festival in Boston. THE MOVING FINGER wrote success for the big play, Curtain at Eight, which this year was the popular comedy, Charley's Aunt. New and enthusiastic members were admitted at the half year. These participated in the trips to neighboring schools and joined in the club’s vacation party where each guest portrayed a member of the Greenwich Village set, in costume, and presented and explained their modernistic, expressionist painting efforts. THE MOVING FINGER writes that another successful year, the Silver anniversary for the Thespians at Durfee, has been brought to a close. THE MOVING FINGER will write an eventful future for members of the class of 1959. 93 Left to right, First row—S, Kay, A. Levine, I. Dubitsky, R, Arrick. Middle row—P. Schwartz, L. Spiro, M. Clark. Formerly, potential new members gained entrance to the team through a screening system. The new plan eliminates competition for membership; anyone with an interest in debating may now join the society. Those who compete in league debates are chosen by the advisor from among the more experienced speakers of the organization. The officers of the Society for the year were Ira Dubitsky, president; Adrianne Levine, vice-president; Stafford Kay, secretary, and Robert Arrick, treasurer. Miss Margaret Mullanev served as advisor. The Durfee organization was, at the beginning of the year, elected treasurer of the Narragansett Debating League. Then followed the most successful debating season in recent years; Durfee has, at this date, seen eight victories and only one loss. In addition, the non-league schedule was increased to include home-away engagements with Silver Lakes Regional High School and Worcester Academy and entrance in the Providence College Tourney. 94 Left to right, First row—R, Massoud, P. GERMAN CLUB Der Deutsche Yerein is open to any student who is studying German or who has studied German in the past. Its purpose is to stimulate interest in German culture and to make an intensive study of the language. The meetings this year have been highlighted by a study of German conversational records. Social activities included a lively and gay Christmas party. The officers for the current year are President Leah Spiro, Vice-president Thomas Curry and Secretary Charles Cipollini. 95 Left to right—J. Leyland, N. Manchester, A. Arruda. D. Andrade. HEALTH CLUB The Sophomore Health Club of 1956-1957 organized material to present an assembly to the sophomore class on the subject of “Physical Fitness and Education.” A general display held in the library corridor during the week of April 29 consisted of posters, athletic equipment, and pamphlets on physical fitness. The posters in the exhibit were contributed to the club by Miss Torphy’s art class and the students of the sophomore class. Offices were held by the following: Alice Arruda, president; Nancy Manchester, vice-president; Delores Andrade, secretary; Judith Leyland and Daniel McDonald, councillors. They were under the supervision of Miss Angeline B. Crispo, faculty advisor. To present the assembly and exhibition the club held six official meetings. 96 Left to right, kneeling—B, Chatterton, L. DURFEE HILLTOP Completing its 37th year of successful publication, the HILLTOP provided its readers with a newspaper which was published bi-weekly, filled with the latest happenings on the athletic fields, in the classrooms ►and around the corridors. This year the HILLTOP made an attempt to reach all students throughout the school by publishing in each issue a story concerning different departments of Durfee. The response to the HILLTOP was tremendous and its subscribers were one of the largest groups in a good many years. Published by the Journalism II class, the staff, headed by Lester Kretman, editor-in-chief, and Kenneth Racette, business manager, included Robert Nulman, sports editor; “Dear Diary,” Joan Brown and Mary ■George; “Information Please,” Beverly Chatterton and Norma Chopp; ‘Pencil Jottings,” Anna DeCamp and Doreene Oliveira; “TV Tidbits,” Phyllis Borden and Ann Faris; “Short Shorts,” Sherrill Higgins and Paula Redfern; “Confidentially,” Jo-Anne Payton and Patricia McCoy; and “What Do You Say?” Jacqueline Smith and Joan Silvia. Mr. John T. Crowley is faculty advisor. 97 C, Hammond H. Attar. HOME ROOM DIRECTORS The Home Room Directors, which is the largest active organization of the school, is made up of two directors, a boy and a girl, from each home room. At the beginning of the year a meeting of all directors is held under the supervision of the faculty advisor, Miss Mildred V. Carroll. Directors elect a president who is a senior and a vice-president-secretary who is a junior. Their duties consist of assisting in checking the daily attendance in their home room, in banking, and in reading the bulletin. They also help conduct membership drives for the Student Activities Association and the Red Cross. Tickets for the various dances held are sold by home room directors. The president this year is Henry Attar and the vice-president- secretary, Carolyn Hammond. 98 JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross Club has been a very active group, for we have participated as hospital aids, orphanage helpers and tutors. Members of our organization have given many hours to helping the disabled, sick, and homeless. Everyone who has devoted time to one of these projects feels that the hours were spent to help build strong character and enable students to serve our community. Our officers planned various stimulating meetings concerning the scope of the Junior Red Cross. Also, we planned our annual fund-raising drive and were successful in our attempts to raise enough money. We hope that Junior Red Cross will continue to keep up its fine work in the coming years. 99 Left to right, First row—J. Rogers, E. Broden, N. Booth, M. Lyons, L. Lataif. R. Massoud, J. Barboza. LIBRARY AIDES The library is a vital organ in the management of Durfee. The library aides are selected on the basis of their academic records, and, directed by Miss Carrie T. Foulkes, they make it possible to accommodate a large number of pupils each day. Among the duties of the library aides are issuing passes, screening magazines and newspapers, preparing new books, typing catalog cards and keeping shelves, books and tables neat and dusted. Social activities include the annual Christmas party and spring picnic. The organization also participates in Book Week and arranges library and corridor displays. The officers for 1958-1959 were President Mary Lyons, Vice-president Nancy Booth, Treasurer Clark Broden, Secretary Lawrence Lataif and Program Director Ronald Struminski. 100 Left to right, First row—M. In the past year, with a new type of programming, the society endeavored to widen the interest of its members by discussing a different type of literature every month, ranging from essays to greeting-card verse. The first meeting of the month was devoted to learning as much as possible about the type of literature through research by various members. The second meeting was devoted strictly to original work in that type. Readings of original works were followed by sessions of constructive criticism. The society is directed by Faculty Advisor Miss Katherine Lomax, Officers for the year were President Sheldon Isenberg, Vice- president Carol Spellman, and Secretary Meryl Cohen. 101 Left to right—G. Duggan, P. Schwartz, M. Rodrigues. MATHEMATICS CLUB This year has been an active and rewarding one of the Mathematics Club and its members. This was the first year that we used the elective system of membership. Every February and June, new members are elected on the basis of teachers’ recommendations, and the calibre of their school work in general, as shown by their position on the All-A or Principal's List. The aim of the club this year was to encourage and satisfy curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematics, not only among its members, but also among those non-members of the student body who are also interested in mathematics. We strove to achieve this aim with an enjoyable and beneficial program of activities, including lectures on the IBM and calculating devices. Early in the year, the familiar club exhibit was displayed in the library corridor, and in January, Mr. Edward Carey became our new club advisor. As usual, the Mathematics Tournament was held in May, and thus the club continued to fulfill its purposes in encouraging a sincere interest in mathematics. 102 Left to right, Seated—D. Oliveira, E. Arruda, J. Crowley, A. LoviL Standing— K, Maher, B. Hall, L. Moniz, J. Packer, W Doraz, C. Mills, E. Mello, C. Spellman, M. Sullivan, S. Zangwill, M. Soares. MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB The Music Appreciation Club has aimed to cover as many aspects of the music field as possible and to develop a deeper insight in and understaanding of good music. The first half of each regular meeting, devoted to an explanation of the program, was followed by the playing of various selections. A great diversity of recordings and discussions made a program which maintained the interest of over forty active members. Opportunities for members to witness live opera scenes presented by surrounding communities, the annual spring trip to hear the Boston Pops Orchestra, and work on a display on National Music Week highlighted the season’s activities. Officers of the club include President Joan Packer, Vice-president Anne Marie Mello and Secretary Louise St. Laurent. 103 THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Senior Mixed Chorus, Band, Orchestra, four Sophomore Girls Glee Clubs, and one Boys Glee Club are organizations meeting during school time which make up the Music Department. These groups have all been very successful this year. The band, under the able direction of Mr. Faust Fiore, plays mostly for outdoor functions, while the orchestra, directed by Miss Helen L. Ladd, department head, performs for assemblies and concerts, as do the glee clubs and choruses. This year was highlighted by many fine musical events. The Christmas Concert, in which most groups participated, was an effective production. We all fondly remember the wonderful job done by the Senior Mixed Chorus and the Orchestra, during the Spring Concert when “Carmen” was so superbly enacted. Twenty-two Durfee pupils participated in the District Concert, while we were also well represented in Hyannis for the State Orchestra. The Boston Youth Symphony has accepted four of our pupils for their orchestra which has toured New York, and will visit Japan this summer. Ensembles meeting after school time are the Silvertones, Vocalaires, Serenaders, String Trio and Dance Band. The latter, which was perfected this year, played for many dances, whereas the other four groups successfully entertained at community organizations and assemblies. 104 ORCHESTRA OFFICERS Left to right—R. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an honoring organization, the members of which are chosen from the upper 25 per cent of the junior and senior classes. To be eligible for membership, a student must exemplify qualities of service, leadership, character and scholarship. The juniors and seniors who become members are inducted into the society during an impressive ceremony. This year, under the leadership of Jeffrey McMahon, president; Richard Bonalewicz, vice-president, and Margaret Fletcher, secretary, the society has continued the tutoring service, the aim of which is to assist pupils who have missed school through necessary absence. A Coffee Hour is held in the fall and new members are welcomed at a Spring Tea. This year members of the group conducted a panel on accelerated programs in high schools. The society, under the guidance of Miss Mildred V. Carroll, does much to stimulate pupils to excel in the traits requisite to membership. 108 Left to right, Seated M. Rebello, M. Leandro, B. PORTUGUESE CLUB As in the past, the Portuguese Club has made an earnest effort to acquaint the students with this language by reading, writing, and speaking Portuguese. In addition, its social activity has made it possible for the club members to meet and talk with distinguished people of this city who are of Portuguese nationality. Occasionally, parties and socials are held for the enjoyment of all members. As another activity of the club, an annual display of pictures and articles of Portugal is presented in the library corridor for the benefit of the entire student body. 109 Left to right, Front—B. SANITATION COMMISSION “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” With this motto in mind the 1958-59 session of the Sanitation Commission opened under the direction of President Alice V, Arruda, and Faculty Advisor Angeline B. Crispo. The following officers were elected by members of the commission at the first meeting: Barbara Hall, vice-president, and Shirley Bertoncini, secretary. Commission membership is composed of all health counselors elected in each home room at the beginning of the year. From these members a respective number is elected to make up the Upper Board. The main duties of the group are the supervision of school sanitary conditions and the trying of pupils before a commission jury for offenses against school health rules. no Left to right, Front row—J. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club is composed of students who have an interest in science which extends beyond ordinary classroom work. Besides the regular meetings, club activities include trips to colleges, museums, and other places of scientific interest. The program at a club meeting usually features a demonstration on some phase of science, prepared by a small group of students. Occasionally, a guest speaker of a certain scientific profession is obtained to address the club. All of the members participate eagerly in all meeting programs; and a notable facet in this spiral is the interclass rivalry to decide whether the Juniors or the Seniors will prepare the most worthy demonstration or ask the most intelligent question of the guest speaker. For these reasons membership in the club is pleasant as well as beneficial, and we all look back upon our years with none but the pleasantest memories. ill Left to right, Kneeling—M. Abrams, R. The main objective of this organization is to acquaint its members with the culture, art, literature, traditions and language of Spain. “El Circulo Espanol,” the Spanish Club, is in its seventh year at Durfee. Our primary interests this year have been a series of informal discussions, games, and songs in which the individual members actively participated, under the direction of a program chairman. The officers of the club for 1958-1959 were Michael Abrams, president; Eleanor Kaylor, vice-president, and Konni David, secretary. Membership of this organization includes outstanding speakers of the school Each member participates in at least one of the bureau's bi-monthly meetings and gains invaluable experience as a speaker and or program chairman. Voice recordings are provided, the use of the rostrum is taught, and members frequently engage in panel discussions and debates. The club's activities in 1958 and 1959 included a diversity of informative speeches and humorous talks. Several members took advantage of opportunities for speakers to address outside audiences. During these years the club has carried out its purpose to increase members’ interest and knowledge of world affairs of yesterday and today. One of Durfee’s largest organizations, the World History Club helps its members to become aware of their responsibilities as future leaders of the United States and citizens of the world through their participation in its many activities. These include interesting speakers, educational slides and movies, and enjoyable but also informative trips. The club held its annual trip to the United Nations in New York in February, an educational tour of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the Spring, and a coffee hour with guest speaker in May. Officers were Mary Louise Clark, president; Nancy Booth, vice- president; Jo Ann Martin, secretary-treasurer. 115 Front—S. Kupiec. Back, left to right—B. Maticioni, J. Connell, K, Brooks, VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is an organization composed of boys who have earned a varsity letter in interscholastic athletics. Officers for this year were Stan Kupiec, president; John Connell, vice-president; Ken Brooks, secretary; and Bob Maucione, treasurer. The faculty advisor is Coach Luke Urban. The highlight of this year’s activity was the annual Varsity Show, presented in April under the direction of Mr. Joseph B. D’Adamo with the assistance of several other members of the faculty With enthusiastic Varsity Club members offering their cooperation and ability, the show met with its usual success, featuring the selection and crowning of the Varsity King and Queen for each night The athletes proved themselves to be as poised and graceful behind the footlights as on the athletic field. The proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Varsity Show were used to purchase midnight blue blazers for the seniors and red and black reversible jackets for all other members of the club, and part of the proceeds was donated to the Charles V. Carroll Scholarship Fund. 116 Left to right, Kneeling—K. Hargraves, G, Keough, K. Brooks, K, Burton, J. Connell, E. Pereira, D. McDonald, Standing—J. McMahon, T. Donovan, R. Bonalewicz, C. Carey, R. The Hilltoppers next victory came as a result of a closely-fought tussle in which they edged out a fine North Attleboro squad. The team continued its winning way by easily downing New Bedford Vocational High School and our new opponent, Dartmouth High School. One of the highlights of the season came when Coach Luke Urban's charges became the first to defeat a mighty Taunton eleven in a game marked by outstanding defensive play by the tenacious Red and Black. Durfee's first and only defeat was an upset by the Bristol County champ, Coyle. However, the Hill toppers bounced back to defeat our arch rival, New Bedford High School, in the traditional Thanksgiving Day classic. Durfee placed second in league standings only because they were unable to make up a game with Fairhaven which was rained out. At the annual football banquet, Charlie Carey received the Jake Reagan Trophy as the most valuable player of the team. Seniors who were awarded letters at this banquet included Carey, Dick Bonalewicz, Bob Hargraves, Stan Kupiec, John Connell, Jeff McMahon, Bill McMahon, Dan McDonald, John Mooney, Mike Frain, Ken Burton, John Perreira, Ed Ferreira, Tom Donovan and Phil Coelho. 120 Left to right, kneeling—Keough, Bonalewicz, Penault, Hathaway, Kupiec. Standing—Brooks, Hargraves, Machado, Woltman, Connell. Not in photo—Carey, Clithero. BASKETBALL Although Durfee placed fourth in the highly competitive Bristol County League, the team fought its way into the semi-finals of the Tech Tourney at Boston Garden. Captain Stanley Kupiec proved to be the key to success. He made his debut in the New Bedford game and continued to prove himself an adept playmaker and defensive mainstay, Charlie Carey, one of the league’s best backcourt men, combined speed and accuracy to make him dangerous on fast breaks. Co-Captain John Connell was Durfee’s high scorer. The tall pivot harassed opponents with his deadly jumps and handy tap-ins. Dick Bona- lewicz was the team’s biggest rebounder and an excellent clutch player, often providing the last two valuable points. Gary Hathaway carried the team into the Garden semi-finals with his graceful jump shots, driving lay-ups and outstanding rebounding. Capable reserves included Tom Donovan, Kenny Brooks, Bill Clithero, Don Murray and Kenny Machado, 121 Spring Sports Baseball At press time Durfee’s baseball squad is looking forward to another successful campaign and capturing the Massachusetts State title. Coach Luke Urban is depending heavily on the services of returning lettermen Dick Bonalewicz, Charley Carey, John Cipollini, Bob Hargraves, A1 Lavoie and Ed Pereira. Track This year’s team under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Clinton Borden, is out to better last year’s mark. The coach is banking heavily on the performances of its returning lettermen Tom Donovan, Mike Jaryna, Jeff McMahon, John Mooney and Tommy Tavares. Golf Coach William Nugent’s players are seeking the Bristol County title this season. The team will be built around a nucleus of six returning veterans, including Dan McDonald, Butch Pacheco, Bob Placido, Chet Borden, Ed Powers and Bob Springer. Tennis Coach Frank Jordan wTas hard beset by graduation. The success of this year’s tennis team will depend largely on a group of inexperienced players. 122 Left to right. Kneeling—F. CHEERLEADERS The cheerleading squad, composed of four seniors and four juniors, has been active this past year at both football and basketball games and at all pep rallies. Attired in red skirts and white crew neck sweaters bearing the school letters for football games, and in neat red and black pleated fashioned outfits for basketball, the girls led the cheers for the team and at the same time sparked the enthusiasm of the crowd with their very colorful formations. The cheerleaders have brought credit to the school in both sports, making a fine showing at every game. In the spring of her sophomore year, any girl who is receiving a passing grade in all her subjects is eligible to try out for the squad. A trio of outside judges, selected by the principal, chooses the four finalists, who then act as cheerleaders during their junior and senior years. “Roll up the score, boys' We want more!” 123 Facing group—J. The club is composed of girls who like athletics and enjoy conducting sports activities. These girls are chosen from the three upper classes for their athletic ability, qualities of leadership, willingness to work and dependability. Numerals are earned by participation in basketball, volleyball, badminton, bowling, gymnasium leading, refereeing and committee work. The club is not only devoted to sports, but enjoys other activities as well. For example, the members have enjoyed the Alumnae Reunion and the Spring Outing. This year the club, by working together, has continued to achieve its goals of good sportsmanship and health. 124 Left to right—I. Fonseca. P. Casey, Judy Wilkinson, J. Taylor, J. Ceyland, B. GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL During the 1958-1959 season the Girls’ Varsity played an 11-game schedule. Durfee, with a record of nine wins and two losses, ended its season tied with Case and Somerset for second place. The team is composed of 10 seniors and three juniors. In May these girls are awarded an Old English “D”. At the end of the school year a banquet is held for all girls who played on school teams. Among those groups present will be field hockey, basketball, volleyball and softball players, A trophy is awarded each winning team. Joyce Wilkinson was captain. Miss Virginia W. Frost is coach. 125 Left to right, Front—M. Venancio, D, Fairtiie, J. Wilmarth. Standing—S. Cook, N. Paine, M. McDonald, C. Larrivee. MAJORETTES At the pep rallies, football games, parades and the schoolboy basketball tournament at Boston Garden, eight cheerful girls perform tricky routines to the lively music of the school band. These girls are known as majorettes. Their colorful uniforms and bright smiles help to foster school spirits among loyal rooters. Majorettes show their dancing ability by taking part in the annual Varsity Show. They compete with other majorettes at the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Festival. They also work throughout the entire school year producing original routines for special performances. Tryouts are held each year for sophomores who have passing marks and good conduct ratings. Four are selected to replace the four seniors who graduate. Head majorette is chosen by two teachers and an outside judge. At the annual Football Banquet each girl receives a “D” with a baton insignium. Miss Alice Harrington is faculty advisor. 126 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The editor and staff of this publication are indeed grateful to many people who have aided our efforts to make it a success.
