“
In appreciation of her infin- ite patience, professional skill and general interest in her students, the Class of 1958 dedicates its Record Book to Miss Elizabeth L. Leonard. With deepest respect and ad- miration we pay this tribute to a teacher who has been de- voted not only to her class- room work but also to extra curricular activities, partic- ularly the Speakers' Bureau, throughout her years of service to Durfee. To the Members of the 1958 Graduating Class of the B. M. C. Durfee High School: I am delighted to be allowed to extend to you my sincere congratulations. With my congratulations go the best wishes not only of myself, but of every member of the Fall River public school system. Now, you take your turn as the newest of the unending line of high school graduates entering the world of the adult. With the excellent training that you have received at your high school, we have every confidence that you will take an honorable place in the world about you. The dramatic events of current history will be felt by you more and more. I do not need to remind you that recent happenings have caused the nation to take a new look at its young people—to question whether or not they have been rendered soft by prosperity and modern educational theories. There is no doubt in my mind that this is not the case— there is no doubt in my mind that you have the courage, the ability, to face up to difficult problems and do them well. May the blessings of God go with you and may your future be all that you hope it to be. Sincerely yours, To the Class of 1958: Few Durfee graduating classes have ever left the shelt- ered classroom and parental supervision under circumstances more tantalizing, more clearly demanding of the individual than exist in the world today. You are proud, I am sure, to have attended a high school loyal in its curriculum to the great tradition of Western culture. What you have studied at Durfee will serve you in good stead, whether you plan to outdo the Russians in the designing of Sput- niks and guided missiles or to make your presence felt in the more mundane orbits of business and society. The habits of concentra- tion, of punctuality, of scholarship and service, of sincerity and intellectual honesty which your fine teachers have striven so hard to impress upon you will grow in value with the years. You will go forward to further education or to the world of work with a deep confidence strengthened, too, by your abiding religious faith. I am indeed happy to congratulate you upon your graduation from B. M. C. Durfee High School. May you grow in strength, in wisdom, and in happiness day by day. Ambrose F. Keeley, Principal Joseph 0. SOUZA PETER N. STETHIEWICZ WILLIAM H. SUNDEL JOSEPH WALKER 67 '54-'55 In September, 1954, we first entered these hallowed halls. It was not long before we learned that the cafeterias were not on the fourth floor floor of the Durfee Building1, and very soon we became accustomed to the everyday routine of high school life. As Freshmen we were anxious to belong and our first opportunity to take part in school activities was the opening of the football season. We were really overjoyed when the Hilltoppers were victorious over The Whalers Thanksgiving Day, 14-6. Election of class officers took place in December and we chose Carol Golz, president; Edward Lyons, vice-president; Theresa Nunes, secre- tary, and Patrick Hurley, councillor to the S.A.A, At the end of the first semester, Kathleen Burns, Lucy Dubiel, Carol Golz, Michele Kaufman, Francis Latessa, William Reilly and Judith Symons made the All-A List. Many others were on the Principal's List. During basketball season Durfee again captured the Bristol County Championship, but was stopped by a strong Quincy team in the semi-finals at Boston Garden by a margin of 63-47. At this time we had some up and coming athletes in the persons of Doug Baxendale and Gerry Elias. As usual the annual Varsity Show was a huge success, and well patronized by our classmates. As our freshman year terminated, wre looked forward to the following year when we would meet new friends from Morton and Henry Lord. '55—'56 This year our Thanksgiving Day game was at Sargent Field and we wound up the season by thoroughly trouncing New Bedford 39-19. We were pleased to see that our classmate, Gerry Elias, played an important part in this game. 68 After a term of getting acquainted with our new classmates we were given an opportunity to choose leaders. Our sophomore officers constituted a good representation from among the former Durfee, Morton and Henry Lord freshmen. Elected were Gerald Elias, president; John Harty, vice-president; Dorothy Frain, secretary; Lucy Dubiel, councillor to the S.A.A.; and Diane Levesque, secretary of the S.A.A. Many sophomores became active club members. Norma DuBiel led the Health Club as president; and the newly organized Classical Club elected Martin Cohen and John Harty as its first president and vice- president. In sports, the Hilltoppers brought fame and honor to Durfee by winning the New England basketball championship. Some newcomers on the All-A List were Robert Bucko, Lynne Crocker, Marilyn Griffiths, Lorraine Hennessey, Howard Rudolph, Kalman Pollen, Irma Schwartz and Dale Silva. '56-'57 Our officers were Norma DuBiel, president; John Harty, vice- president; Dorothy Frain, secretary; Diane Levesque, vice-president of the S.A.A.; Martin Duffy and Lucy Dubiel, councillors; and Edward Lyons, vice-president of the Home Room Directors. Our class members made appearances in the Durfee Dramatic Club, musical groups, and on the athletic field. The annual pep rally opened the football season with the new cheerleaders and majorettes chosen from the junior class taking part. Thanksgiving Day was outstanding as the Hilltoppers rolled to an impressive shutout over the Whalers at Alumni Field. Athletic enthusiasm carried over into basketball as Durfee hoopsters carried off the Bristol County Crown, On the debating front the team of Reilly and Pollen firmly opposed the lowering of the voting age. Career Day was held March 13 highlighted by an inspiring address by the late Rev. Lex King Souter. Soon afterwards twenty-six of our class were elected to the National Honor Society. As the school year drew to a close, plans for the Junior Prom were reaching completion and we now wore the black onyx rings of the Class of ’58. 69 57—'58 September 1957! Seniors now! We elected as our leaders Norma DuBiel, president; Mary Donnelly, vice-president; Dorothy Frain, secre- tary; Martin Duffy, president of the S.A.A.; Lucy Dubiel, president of the Home Room Directors; and William Reilly, president of the National Honor Society. The various clubs chose officers with the seniors well represented. Terry Coute, Delia McCarthy and Robert Binette served as directors for the annual production of T.N.T. Directing the football team were Co-Captains Gerry Elias and Joe Pavao. Alice Boo lay led the cheerleaders and Irene Medeiros, head majorette, was assisted by Meg Donnelly. More honors were in order as Bill Reilly was elected delegate for Student Government Day with Dale Silva alternate, and Lucy Dubiel was chosen the D.A.R. outstanding senior girl. Hilltoppers once again captured Bristol County honors in basketball and appeared in Boston Garden for the fourteenth straight year. The Senior Debate Tournament reached the final round as Kalman Pollen and Doug Salmond emerged victorious. The following names appeared on the All-A List: John Arruda, Kathleen Burns, Nancy Furtado, Doris Gardula, Michele Kaufman and Judith Symons. The annual Varsity Show saw the coronation of royalty as Doug Baxendale, Bernie Comeau and Gerry Elias; Carole Amarantes, Alice Boulay and Meg Donnelly were crowned on each of three successive nights. Michele Kaufman and Douglas Salmond have been named the two highest ranking students of our class. As June draws near, prom, gift, and advisory commitees have been appointed for graduation exercises. Twelve years of memories now lie behind us; while ahead lies the fulfillment of dreams. 70 Left to right, first row: J. DuBiel, M, Duffy, J. Wilmarth. Second row: J, Case. P. Borden, J, Lundy, P. It is the only organization whose membership is open to all students. The Student Council serves as its governing body and, in addition is responsible for the school social functions. In September the Council issued S.A.A. Guide Books to help with the orientation of freshmen and sophomores. Later in the month a very successful membership drive was conducted. The social calendar included the Harvest Hop, the Pigskin Hop, the Christmas Dance, the Mid-Winter Hop and the Spring Dance. At the close of the gridiron season, a Football Banquet was held to honor the members of the squad. In order to give recognition to the leaders of the school there was the Recognition Night in May and the Awards Assembly in June. S.A.A. officers are President Martin Duffy '58, Vice-President Jane DuBiel ’59, and Secretary Judith Wilmarth '60. Faculty advisors are Miss Yolande B, Laliberte, Miss Alice C, Harrington and Mr. Joseph B. D Adamo. 72 Left to right, first row: P. Oliveira. A. Boulay, A. Thompson. Second row: N. Snell, P. This money is collected in each home room and after being checked by the home room teacher, it is then placed in the large envelope after which it is taken to one of our cashiers. After a careful check, the envelopes are placed in a bank bag and sent to the bank. Durfee has a “Pay Off Day at about the end of May. Seniors who have bank accounts must withdraw their savings. They have a choice either of receiving cash, or opening up an adult savings account. Many students choose the latter. The school savings project in Durfee has been successful for several years, and many seniors are glad that they started their savings account at an early age. The School Savings program is under the direction of Mr. George C. Hoar, Plead of Commercial Department. 73 CAMERA CLUB Left to right: M. Although the members are sophomores, all classes benefit by the pamphlets, assemblies and displays. When the class of 1958 was in its sophomore year, the Health Club project dealt with poliomyelitis, commonly called polio. Right after the project, the Salk vaccine came into view and the students were well informed on the subject. Miss Angeline R. Crispo, faculty advisor, gave us her wholehearted assistance and guidance which helped make the project successful. Officers were President Norma DuBiel, Vice-President Anne Thomp- son, Secretary Ann Irene Boyko, Councillors Connie Patten and Buddy Elkington. 81 Seated: D. Silva, P, Morganstein. Standing: J. THE HILLTOP The Hilltop, a bi-weekly newspaper published by the second year journalism students, has concluded its 36th successful year. In order to serve the school and its many organizations, the Hilltop has attempted to publicize any and all information directly connected with the school. In order to serve the senior students who are responsible for it, this school publication has presented the opportunity for them to exercise their journalistic abilities to their fullest extent. In both cases the Hilltop has proved itself equal to the task. This year's staff was comprised of Dale Silva, editor-in-chief; Phyllis Morganstein, business manager; Sandra Neville and Judith Wall, news writers; Judith Gollub, Janet Lundy, Sheila Geffen, Betty Curt, Judith Auclair, Muriel Eekersley, Rose Marie Morango and Peggy Foley, features; Arthur Henderson and William Wordell sports. Faculty advisor is John T, Crowley. 82 L. Dubiel, J. Connell HOME ROOM DIRECTORS The Home Room Directors is one of our largest and most important groups. It is comprised of a boy and girl from each home room who, with the proper scholastic requirements, are elected by the class. Because of the great number of directors, the meetings are held during school time. Among their duties are the reading of the morning notices, tending to the weekly banking, and striving for cooperation at school dances and in school drives. The directors present directly to their rooms all projects of general school interest. 83 Seated: C. Liebman. Standing, left to right: P. Darmody, P. Cwiklik, B. Charest. JUNIOR RED CROSS The purpose of our Junior Red Cross Club is to promote an interest among students in the activities of the Junior Red Cross. This year a small but select group under the guidance of Mrs. Mary Kostas worked assiduously since the month of September and throughout the school year with various worthwhile and interesting projects. At the commencement of the school year literally thousands of pins and cards were counted and distributed to every home room in Durfee prior to the annual drive. Delegates from our club also spent hours counting and placing cards, pins and envelopes into boxes that were distributed to every school in Fall River and surrounding towns. As a result of our efforts our drive was a great success. In February the director of our Fall River Chapter, Mr. Craig, spoke to us about disaster and how the Red Cross saves the lives of many people who are homeless and starving. In connection with homeless people, some members of our club devoted their time and energy in taking care of youngsters from the ages of four to eight in city orphanages. Many of our group have also served in the local hospitals as volunteer members of the Junior Nurses Aides Program. The hours that our club has spent together are memorable ones, for we have gained invaluable knowledge of what the Junior Red Cross is and how volunteers help humanity. This year our president was Caroline Liebman; vice-president, Paul Cwiklik; secretary, Barbara Charest, and councillor, Patricia Darmody. 84 LIBRARY AIDS Left to right, first row: J. Moniz, T. During the course of the year, we have written poems and short stories which have been put into a scrapbook decorated with art work, and given to a prominent Fall River orphanage. In this way, we have accomplished our goal, and have brought enjoyment to ourselves, and, we hope, to others. 86 Left to right: G. Moran, M. Kaufman, D. Edwards. MATH CLUB Modern mathematics was the keynote this year at club meetings. The December meeting found members engaged in making trihexa and hexahexa-flexagons. Flexagons, invented in 1939 by a British mathematics student at Princeton, are a rather new mathematical diversion. During January and February, the club turned to the more serious aspects of modern mathematics. Mrs. Norton consented to tell us about recent developments in the field, introducing to us a few strange symbols used today in mathematics and the names of modern branches such as Boolean Algebra and Topology. Our competent and devoted faculty advisor, Mr. D'Adamo, continued the discussion, stressing the goals that high school mathematics should have. A mathematical game party was the feature of our March meeting. This was a return to the lighter side of the subject. Many members, perhaps unduly exhilarated by the game, insisted that the sum of 39 and 27 is 56. Prizes were awarded to the winners. April witnessed the excitement and enthusiasm induced by the annual mathematical tournament. Four students were selected to represent our school in the final contest held in Newton. Thus our club tried to stimulate interest in mathematics, provide additional information, fun and spirited competition for Durfee students. 87 MUSIC DEPARTMENT Left to right, first row: M. Although on the short end of the score in seven of its nine games, the Red and Black showed the determination and fight characteristic of former Hilltopper elevens. But for a few bad breaks, the season's record could easily have been reversed. FOOTBALL TEAM Coach Luke Urban's charges auspiciously began the season with a 14 to G win over a strong Attleboro squad, a win later to be forfeited because of player ineligibility. The first and only official Durfee conquest came at the expense of New Bedford Vocational High School by the score of 27 to 14, with the victors showing dogged tenacity in holding their opponents at bay. Archbishop Williams proved to be too much for the small and inexperienced Hilltoppers, Durfee bowing, 33 to G. The team then proceeded to lose its four remaining games; to Fairhaven in a closely-fought tussle, 12 to 7; to Taunton in a mud- splattered game 19 to 0; to the county's best team, Coyle, in a game lard fought and marked by fine defensive play, 23 to 0; and in the annual Thanksgiving Day classic to our old rivals, New Bedford High School, 6 to 0. At the annual football banquet, Gerry Elias was awarded the Jake Reagan Trophy as the most valuable member of the team. Seniors who were awarded letters at this banquet included Elias, Joe Pavao, Doug Baxendale, A1 Simpson, John Harty, Manny Sousa, John Carvalho and Dave Borkman. 104 Left to right, kneeling: R. Bonalewicz, C. Carey, S. Kupiec, J. Sheahan, P. Joyce, M. Souza. Standing: J, Driscoll, D. Baxendale, J. Harty, J. Connell, G. Elias, B. McMahon, J. Carlberg. BASKETBALL In the first season of the official Bristol County League, the Luke Urban-coached Hilltoppers won first honors. Compiling a i2 and 2 slate in county competition, Durfee upset the preseason predictions by nosing out New Bedford Vocational for the title. At the conclusion of the regular season schedule the Hilltoppers were again invited to participate in the annual Tech, or Eastern Massachusetts, Tourney. Our boys bowed out in the opening round to a taller Salem five. Captain Stanley Kupiec proved himself to be a capable leader and an adept playmaker and defensive mainstay. Douglas Baxendale, playing from the forward slot, scored on unstoppable drives and jumpshots. Gerry Elias constantly was among the top scorers of the league and stayed with the best in regards to defensive ability. John Connell, the team's highest scorer, played center and was the big rebounder of the squad. Dick Bonalewicz, a real rough-and-tumble hoopster, rebounded admirably as well as contributing his share to the scoring. The reserves, who proved that they could more than hold their own against any team, were John Driscoll, John Harty, Judson Carlberg, John Sheahan and Manny Sousa. 105 BASEBALL Coach Luke Urban's 1958 squad may have some trouble duplicating last year's record, but outstanding lettermen returning promise another successful campaign. Veterans on the roster include Gerry Elias, Douglas Baxendale, John Driscoll, Frank DeNardo, Stan Kupiec, A1 Lavoie, Bob Hargraves and Charley Carey. TRACK Although lacking in experience, Thomas Hammond’s charges are expected to hold their own in County competition. The coach is banking heavily on the performances of lettermen Martin Duffy, Reggie Pelagio, John Mooney, John Harty, Dave Barnes, Judson Cariberg and Phil Sanchez. TENNIS The state schoolboy champion, Kalman Pollen, returns to help Durfee defend its state crown. Coach Frank Jordan, although beset hard by graduation, is confidently awaiting the season because of the racket skill of returning netmen Pollen, Douglas Salmond and Martin Cohen. GOLF Backed by a wealth of returning players and a fine crop of new- comers, Coach William Nugent expects an excellent showing by this year’s linksmen. The team is led by Frank Torngren, Bob Placido, Russ Robertson, Steve Brown and Fred Pearson. 106 Seated: G, Elias, Standing, left to right: J. Sheahan, J. Connell, S. Kupiec VARSITY CLUB This club is an organzation of boys who have earned a varsity letter in interscholastic athletics. Officers for this year were Gerald J. Elias, president; John Sheahan, vice-president; John Connell, secretary and Stanley Kupiec, treasurer. The faculty advisor is Coach Luke Urban. The highlight of this year’s activity was the annual Varsity Show, presented in April under the direction of Mr. Joseph B. I)’Adamo with the assistance of several members of the faculty. With enthusiastic Varsity Club members offering their cooperation and ability, the show met with its usual success featuring the selection and crowning of the Varsity King and Queen for each consecutive night. The hidden talents of the athletes came to light in this production proving that they are as capable behind the footlights as on the athletic field. The proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Varsity Show were used to purchase finger tip, red and black reversible jackets for all the members of the club, and part of the proceeds was given to the Charles V. Carroll Scholarship Fund. 107 CHEERLEADERS Center: A. Boulay. Lett to right, first row: I. Caya, F, Nawrocki, C. Walsh, J. Podolski, C. Amarantes. Second row: M. Manchester, G. MAJORETTES At the football games, pep rallies, parades and the basketball tour- nament at Boston Garden, eight cheerful girls known as majorettes perform to the lively music of the school band. Their tricky twirling routines, colorful uniforms and bright smiles help to foster school spirit among loyal rooters. They work throughout the school year to produce original twirling routines. They show their dancing ability by taking part in the annual Varsity Show. They compete with other majorettes at the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Festival. Tryouts are held each year for sophomores who have passing marks and good conduct ratings. Four are selected to replace the four seniors who will graduate in June. Head majorette is chosen by two teachers and an outside judge. At the annual Football Banquet each girl receives a “D” with baton insignium. Miss Alice Harrington is faculty advisor. 109 VOLLEYBALL Kneeling: A. Thompson, F. Flores. Standing: D, Szczepkowski, L. Kaiil, D, Lurie, A. Boulay, D. Smith. 110 GIRLS' BASKETBALL Left to right: F. Ill ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Record Book staff wishes to thank all who helped assemble this publication. We deeply appreciate our classmates’ cooperation for turning' in their glossies and pertinent information promptly, and we also wish to express our gratitude to faculty advisors and club presidents for group photographs and write-ups. As in past years the Fall River Herald News has been of great service to us by supplying us with sports action shots and group photographs of athletic teams. We are also deeply indebted to the photographers, printers, engravers and binders for pi'ompt and courteous service. This year we have been especially fortunate in having a fine group of advertisers who have helped defray the cost of publishing this record of our high school careers. And last, but certainly not least, we feel a deep sense of gratitude to our faculty advisors, Miss Catherine L. Hogan and Mr. John T. Crowley, who have spent many hours in helping us prepare this book for publication. 112 AHOY THERE MATEY !
