PRINCIPAL AMBROSE F. KEELEY supSiUimiiDSirrs invasa TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF THE B. M. C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL: Once again, that perennial, ever-fresh occurrence is about, to transpire. An- other class graduates from the B. M. C. Durfee High School. This time it is your graduation. Like the tens of thousands who have gone before you, and like the tens of thousands who will follow you, you are filled with the excitement that marks the turning from youth to adulthood. One thing you can be sure of, that you have with you the goon wishes and the heartiest congratulations of all of us who preceded you into the ranks of Durfee Alumni. At this stage in your career, you may be justly impatient with the advice of older people, hut believe me, there is something to be learned from the observations and experience of those who have already trod down the path that you are starting. The old adages, you will find, may be threadbare, but they remain in many instances valid and worth consideration. The success you hope for and we wish for you will be obtained by you to the extent that you persevere with determination, with straight- forwardness and with idealism. The satisfactions you get from life will be measured not only by individual achievement, but by the degree to which you carry your share of the burden of society. You may think you see people achieve success by luck and unscrupulous short cuts, but you may be assured that that kind of success comes to the very few and is not worth anything when obtained. The education you have received at Durfee, regardless of how much or how little you value it at the present time, is the basis on which you will build your lives. When you consider how many millions of Americans have never had that much, you will realize how fortunate you ai e. It is a good education, but can not be an end in itself. On it, you must build in order to develop the fully-rounded personalities you will need to lead a properly balanced and adjusted life. Build on it wisely, and main- tain the virtues that have been instilled in you by .your parents and teachers so that, you may achieve the success and happiness all of us wish for you. I know I am not alone in congratulating you. The entire staff of the school system with which most of you have spent twelve .years sees in you its hope and its pride. The citizens of Fall River who have given generously of their substance ask only that you use it properly. Congratulations to you all! Sincerely yours, WILLIAM S. LYNCH, Superintendent of Schools. STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students Activities Association, the nucleus of all school activi- ties, is the only organization whose membership is open to all students. Under the direction of its governing body, the Student Council, this organization has had a particularly busy and eventful year. In September, to orientate freshmen and sophomores, the SAA issued revised Durfee Guide Books. A very successful drive for member- ship was conducted in October. Beginning with the first school dance, the Pigskin Hop, the program of activities proceeded with the Thanksgiving victory celebration and the football banquet in December to recognize the prowess of our team. The Christmas season was highlighted by a new Christmas Dance. The Mid-Winter Hop began the social life of Durfee in the new year and was followed later in February by the Cupid's Frolic and in April by the Spring Dance. This year two SAA assemblies were offered — one in January and the other in May. The annual banquet for school officers was held in May. Officers are President Norma Pereira '53, Vice-President Pauline McCarthy '54 and Secretary Beverly Costa '55. Other members are Jacqueline Wong ’53, Joan Anderson '53, John Correiro 53, Virginia Gardella '53, Edward Pianka '53, Stephen Nawrocki'54, Maureen Walsh '54, Major Wheelock '54, John Hathaway '55, Joan Drewniak '55, Charles Gesner 55, Daniel Harrington '56, Joseph Fazio 56. Faculty advisors are Miss Yolande B. Laliberte, Mr. Joseph B. D'Adamo and Miss Alice C. Harrington, Honorary members are Miss Alice G. Langford, Mr, James F. Conlin and Miss Anne L. O’Neil. 71 Left to right—Seated—C. Kwarcinski, M. Krawetz, Y. Gauthier. Standing—J. Picker- ing, M. Ferreira, D. Renault. BANK CASHIERS Every Tuesday is Bank Day at Durfee. Those students who believe in the maxim, “Prepare for the future Today' put aside their weekly savings on this day. Durfee students average four hundred dollars in savings every week during the year. These deposits are collected in the home room during opening exercises. The money is then placed into a large envelope togeth- er with the bank books, sealed and delivered to the cashier. After listing and checking all home room envelopes, the cashiers then place the money into specially designed bank bags which are then locked, to await the call of the bank messenger. A list of home room deposits and the number of depositors is then made and kept on file in the office. The bank cashiers are extremely grateful to Mr. Buswell and to Mr. Robinson and his staff at the B, M. C. Durfee Trust Department for the excellent co-operation they have given us during the year. Mr. George C. Hoar is the faculty director for this activity. 72 Left to right—A. Sarti, H. Caufman, R. Schulien. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is composed of students who are interested in photography and wish to learn how to “snap” a good picture. The club is created to stimulate interest in various phases of photog- raphy and to give the layman sufficient knowledge to produce results worth viewing. The club’s activities consist of listening to professional speakers, viewing film-strips on the subject of picture taking, composition, lighting developing and printing and also having a field trip. The club this year sponsored a snapshot contest open to all students at Durfee, and a pho- tographic exhibit on display in the library corridor consisting of prints from the 1952 National High School Photographic Awards Contest spon- sored by Eastman Kodak Company. The officers are Ruth Schulien, president; Anne Sarti, vice-presi- dent; and Howey Caufman, secretary. The faculty advisor is Mr. Joseph J. Lawlor. 73 Seated-—S. Jean. Standing, left to right—D. COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club is an active organization with membership limited to commercial seniors who have attained 75 percent in English and 75 percent in any two commercial subjects. The club arouses and fosters interest in business and commercial education by sponsoring speakers. Social affairs such as an Acquaintance Party, Christmas Party, and May Party are also held. Mr. George C. Hoar, head of the Commercial Department, and Miss Grace M. Dunn are the club advisors. The officers are Sylvia Jean, president ; Dorothy McLaughlin, vice- president; Josephine Piscz, secretary and Ann Wojnar, treasurer. 74 I-eft to tight—Seated—N. Jackson, M. Horvitz, E. Krasnow, R. DEBATING TEAM The Durfee Debating Team is a member of the N a mi g-an sett Inter- scholastic Debating League, which is comprised of Classical and Hope High Schools in Providence, Coyle, New Bedford and Sacred Hearts Aca- demy and Mount Saint Mary's Academy in Fall River. This year's subject was “Resolved: That a Federal Fair Employment Act be adopted. Var- sity debaters were Melvin Horvitz, Nancy Jackson and Erwin Krasnow. Alternates were Rosa Grunberg, Sara Schuman and Lois Wolpert. Other members of the team served as chairman and timekeepers at the various debates. Mr. Paul Buckley is coach. Durfee will be host to the spring meeting of the league this year when the championship cup will be awarded to the team with the high- est record Each year the Debating Team, the Dramatic Club, and the Thes- pians hold a Speech Banquet which officially terminates the activities of these organizations. Other activities of the club included conducting the semi-finals of the Senior Debating Tournament and presenting the winner of this tour- nament with certificates, 75 76 DRAMATIC CLUB On Board our boat August, 1953 Dear Joyce Finch: Hugo and 1 are still on our honeymoon and as we sailed along through the islands we reminisced about this past year at high school. It certainly was an exciting one for me. Our Dramatic Club officers held try-outs, bringing our membership up to 100, President Joyce Lataif conducted meetings each Tuesday. The traditional Hallowe’en party was cancelled out of respect for our beloved Principal Carroll who has been sadly missed this year. The Drama class wrote and Thespians produced four one-act plays called T. N. T, Directly following this success, the new members started rehearsing our annual matinee for children, “A CHRISTMAS DREAM”. Both young and old enjoyed this colorful play. Thespians had no difficulty in selecting the most popular high school play in America for February, “OUR MISS BROOKS”, Added to all our publicity was the contest for Durfee’s “Miss T. V. of ’53” which was won by Cynthia Bates, a sophomore. The star of the show was Cecelia Medeiros, a junior, who made a tremendous hit in the title role. We sent a scene from “AH WILDERNESS” up to Marblehead to the Massachusetts Drama Festival where the actors spent the weekend. Cars full of our members also attended the Drama Conference held at Emer- son College, Boston, in March. Each class competed for honors in the annual spring “FOUR TO GO”, with the faculty lending their talents to complete the evening. The club was guest of the Little Theatre at their three performances. An informi party was held in the gym and a mystery hike. The annual speech banquet initiated new Thespians to Durfee’s Troupe. During the year we gave many scenes from our plays for greater Fall River audiences, which made me proud of our Durfee kids. So you see why I love my dramatic activities even though Hugo says they take more time and work than any sports coaching. Have a nice summer and don’t forget your old co-worker. “Our Miss Brooks” 77 Left to right—first row—J. Boudreau, J. St. Germaine, P. Boothroyd, L. Cornell. Second row—A. Braga, C. DER DEUTSCHE VERE1N Der Deutsche Verein, commonly known as the German Club, was organized to instill a further interest in German culture, history and customs beyond what is taught in the German classes. Membership is open to all pupils who are studying or have studied German. The monthly meetings consist of talks by guest speakers, movies and discussions given by members of the German classes. Each year the club holds a display in the library corridor. This year's exhibit, held in January, consisted of a collection of German stamps, sketchings and paintings of German scenes by members of the club, and various sou- veniers acquired in Germany. This year's officers are Joel Potash, president; Cynthia Bates, vice- president, and Gloria Medeiros, secretary. Faculty advisor is Miss Marie V. Shalloo. 78 SANITATION COMMISSION The set of rules by which this school Is governed is left up to the School Committee and faculty ... but the appearance, beauty and cleanli- ness of Durfee High are in the hands of two organizations known as the Health Club, which is composed of the entire sophomore class, and the Sanitation Commission, which is comprised of the officers of the Health Club and representatives from each class. The main function of the Health Club is to sponsor health drives and assemblies and to cooperate with “Sanco” in keeping the school clean and in good order Individuals elected from both groups form a council which is au- thorized to make and enforce any rules or regulations necessary to keep both buildings and the campus neat and attractive. This council has jurisdiction over a Lower Council, consisting of one representative from each home room. Under the able guidance of Miss Angeline IT Crispo, faculty advisor, “Sanco” has made life more healthful and enjoyable here at Durfee High. Sanitation Commission Officers are President Stanley Zalkind, Vice- President John Harrington and Secretary Janet Winick. Health Club Officers are President Julia Powers, Vice-President Barbara Sharpies, Secretary Elizabeth Bergeron and Councillors Joan Anderson and Stanley Zalkind. Other council members are Joel Potash, Diedre Burns, Irene Pereira, Patricia Andrade, Charles Wilson, Jacqueline Wong, Ellen Farren, Stephen Nawrocki, Norma Perreira, Pauline McCarthy, John Hathaway, Samuel Swidey, Virginia Gardelta and John Hannon. 79 Left to right—seated—M. THE HILLTOP The Hilltop of 1953 has concluded its 32nd year of publication under successful circumstances. Although limited to bi-monthly publi- cation, the Hilltop has served the school and its organizations in publi- cizing social functions, plays, athletic contests and, in general, anything connected with the school. The main interest of the staff has been to bring to the pupils of Durfee High School a lively and interesting paper. Under the guidance of Mr. John T. Crowley, faculty advisor, the staff was comprised of John Hannon, editor-in-chief; Marcia Winegard, business manager; Norma Pereira, news editor; Emile Beaudry, Doris Cabral, Helen Domingos, Ann Futtersak, Margaret Griffin, Katherine Litos, Regina Lopes and Judith Mendonsa, news and features; Melvin Horvitz and John Correiro, sports. 80 HOME ROOM DIRECTORS The Home Room Directors organization is the largest elected body in D'urfee. Because of its size, its members are allowed to hold their meetings during school time. Thus they meet several times: first, to elect officers, and later, to discuss matters of particular importance that they will present to their respective home rooms. At the beginning of the school year, each of the home rooms elects a boy and a girl director Then their duties begin. These include the reading of the morning notices, conducting the morning exercises, selling S.A.A. sponsored tickets and assisting in many of the school projects. The Home Room Directors are necessary to the proper functioning of B, M. C. Durfee High School. Faculty advisor is Miss Mildred V Carroll. 81 1 Left to Right - C, Rritto, L. Alas for those who never sing, But die with all their music in them.” The Literary Club was organized nineteen years ago by our princi- pal, Mr. Ambrose F. Keeley, who was then a teacher in the English De- partment. The purpose of the club was to encourage students in creative writing: short stories, character sketches, essays and poems. During the “Get Out the Vote” project last fall, one of our members, Cecelia Medeiros, submitted the prize-winning essay. The officers for this year are as follows: Faculty Advisor Miss Katherine F. Lomax, President Doris Cabral, Vice-President Lorraine Habib and Secretary Carolyn Britto. 82 Left to light - seated: P. L. Hcnaire, C. Baldyga, D. Weingard, II. Domingos, D. Burns, S. Sokoletsky, C. LIBRARY AIDES A Library Aide starts the day off by distributing passes to students who have reference work to do or who just want to read for pleasure. The Library Aides spend their study periods in the library and during those periods, they do about fifteen minutes of work a day. A few of their tasks are checking passes and taking them to the study halls, dusting shelves and books, helping to prepare new books for student’s use and delivering materials requested by teachers and those recommended by the librarian to teachers. To be in the library every day is a wonderful chance to learn to really love good books and to enjoy reading. There are about two hun- dred students using the library daily, which means about one thousand students a week, or. in other words, about half of the enrollment at Durfee. The library has many wonderful books including fiction, biog- raphies, sports, travel, careers, histories, twenty-four leading magazines, reference books, pamphlets, pictures and other types all ready for your choice. The Aides prepare special exhibits each year for Book Week. This year it was a special exhibit of original posters made by Library Aides and displayed in the library corridor, directing students attention to- wards new books. The Aides displayed in the corridor and within the library original Christmas decorations this year picturesquely presenting the spirit of the season. While Library Aides are primarily a service group and give many hours to help make the library attractive and valuable to their fellow students, they are rewarded in their daily close contacts with a world of books easily within their grasp. To be one of these educationally privileged Durfee Library Aides you must be a member of the sophomore, junior or senior class. You are chosen for your scholastic standing, dependability and cooperation. This organization is under the direction of the librarian, Miss Carrie T. Foulkes. Left to light - M. Enos, L. Woipert, H. Kane, MATHEMATICS CLUB The Mathematics Club has completed a very busy and successful year, made possible by the presentation of a varied and interesting pro- gram. At the first meeting in October, President Harris Kane explained the aims, requirements and rules of the organization to prospective new members. Lois Woipert was elected secretary to serve in office along with Vice-President Marjorie Enos, Membership is open to those students who have completed at least one year of algebra and have an interest in mathematics. The purpose of the organization is to familiarize its members with some of the practical, everyday applications of mathematics. The members select at the first meeting a group of subjects of interest which they would like to have discussed and explained. The chairmen for each month, along with their appointed committees, make arrangements for qualified speakers, usu ally faculty members, to appear at meetings. A Math Club exhibition was on display in the library corridor in the fall. In April, the club sponsored its annual Math Tournament. Four contestants who placed highest were given a trip to the State Math Tournament in May by the club, and participated in this event. The at- tendance at meetings was large, as a result of the fine program offered. Faculty Advisor, Joseph B. D. Adamo did his usual fine job of guiding the organization. 84 Left to i ight- E, Pianka, J. Powers, E. Duhiel NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an honorary organization, the mem- bers of which are chosen from the upper twenty-five percent of the junior and senior classes. These members are selected on the basis of their character, leadership, scholarship and service. The impressive induction ceremony held in the spring exemplifies the four attributes. At this assembly the members recite the pledge of the society and receive their official membership cards. in the fall, a coffee hour is held and the students have an oppor- tunity to hear an outstanding speaker. New senior members are guests at a spring tea. The group has for several years conducted a tutoring system. Pupils who have missed school through a prolonged illness may apply for as- sistance. The society, with its emphasis on scholarship and other desirable character traits, holds a position of dignity in the school. Faculty advisor is Miss Mildred V. Carroll. 85 Front: V. Franco. PORTUGUESE CLUB The Portuguese Club strives to acquaint the Portuguese students with their environment and at the same time to furnish functions with students of their native lands. It also aims to educate its members in the extensiveness and importance ol the resources controlled by the Portuguese speaking people concentrated in South America and Africa. This unit has been very active on the campus and has generally met with success in all its ventures. It shows signs of becoming one of our most active and progressive organizations. Large membership is composed of past and present students of the Portuguese classes. This club annually conducts a general assembly together with an exhibit of Portuguese customs and works. It is with great pleasure that we contribute this to the many S. A. A. Activities. Another event which deserves great mention is Parents’ Night, which is put on by the pupils of the Portuguese classes. It is open to the public, and the pupils present their parents and friends with entertain- ment of various kinds. Officers are: President, John Vieira; Vice-President, Ursula Franco ; General Secretary, Lorraine C. Mello; Chairman of Club Activities, Dolores Viveiros. The Class Secretaries are as follows: Inez Pereira, Evelyn Faria, Lorraine C. Mello, Edna Jean Almeida, Nancy Santos, Cecilia Pereira, Rose Marie Santos, and Raymond Silvia. Mr. Antone Serpa is faculty advisor. 86 Left to right - back row: D. Robinson, A. Greenwood, N. Pereira, J. Piszez, J. Latif, J. Oorreiro. Second row: II. Kane, J. Malloeh, S. Clinton, J. Powers, R. Membership in the bureau is limited to seniors, chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in junior public speaking classes. Members of the Student Council and the debate team also participate in the activities of the bureau, ex-officio. Speakers' Bureau members are assigned definite home rooms as the field of their endeavors — and to those rooms they go to explain and expound to fellow students the reason for joining the S.A.A., seeing a Dramatic Club production, or lending their support in one way or an- other to the many good causes which come along in the course of a year at Durfee. Officers this year are President Joanne Bogle, Vice-president Melvin Horvitz and Secretary Electra Yankopoulos. Faculty advisor is Ralph J. Fletcher. 87 [.eft to right - Seated: C. Beauregard, R. TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad plays a very important role in the maintaining of order between class periods To facilitate passage from building to building, doors must he opened before closing bells ring so there will be no congestion or tardiness to the next class. It is the duty of the squad to place “Road Closed” signs on Rock Street so there will be no auto- mobile traffic to hinder the quick and easy passing between buildings. Members of the squad also assisted in police duty at the football games at Alumni Field. The squad is under the direction of Miss Alice Harring- ton. Ronald Richard '53 is captain of the traffic officers. 88 89 90 Left to right - first row: K. Elias, E. Wisz, L. Leduc, G, Frazer, F. Pacheco, J. Correi) o, E, Petty, M. Liss, K. Jackson. FOOTBALL With Captain “Harpo” McHenry, Paul Bogan and Bill Astle play- ing prominent roles, Durfee’s 1952 grid eleven rolled to four victories against three defeats and finished in a tie with Coyle for the mythical Bristol County Championship. The smashing 31-18 triumph over traditional rival New Bedford before a crowd of 7,000 on Thanksgiving morning will be remembered as the climax which turned an otherwise mediocre season into a success- ful one. Two touchdowns by Bill Astle and one each by McHenry, Bogan and Gendreau overcame an early 7-0 deficit and completed the rout of I he Crimson. After dropping their opener to perennially powerful La Salle by u score of 21-7, the Red and Black edged Attleboro f -0. Th en followed a 26-6 setback at the hands of a big Providence Central team in a game that was actually decided in the last five minutes. Successive victories over New Bedford Voke, 19-6 and highly rated Taunton, 18-7, set the stage for an important clash against Coyle at Father Woodley Field on Armistice Day A 21-13 victory, the first in six years for the Warriors, deadlocked the two teams for the county lead and with DurfeeLs rousing triumph over the Whalers, the two finished in a tie The 1952 season was one of typical color and action in which the following eleven seniors finished their careers at Durfee: Halfbacks McHenry and Astle; fullback Bob Gendreau; quarterbacks Skip Karam and Morton Dubitsky; linemen Paul Bogan, George Frazer, John Carreiro, Joe Tavares, Bill Riley and Willie McDonald. Receiving honors on All-Bristol elevens were Paul Bogan, end; Frank Pacheco, tackle; Len Leduc, guard; and Bill McHenry, halfback. In addition to being selected All-Bristol County, McHenry and Bogan received the Jake Reagan Memorial Trophy, as the most valu- able players. 91 Left to right - First row: W, McDonald, K. Jackson, T. VARSITY CLUB The Durfee Varsity Club is composed of boys who have earned an athletic letter in football, basketball, baseball or track. The highlight of this year’s activities was the annual Varsity Show presented in March under the direction of Miss Marie V. Shalloo and Mr. Joseph B. D. A damp. With 35 enthusiastic members offering their coop- eration and ability, the show met with its usual success. It consisted of musical features, dramatic skits, novelty numbers and pageantry. The hidden talents of the athletes came to light in this production, proving that they are as capable behind the footlights as on the athletic field The proceeds of the show were used to purchase varsity sweaters for the members, and to provide funds for the annual outing at Coach Urban’s lakeside lodge. Officers for the year were President Wiliam McHenry, Vice-Presi- dent Paul Bogan, Secretary John Roden. The faculty advisor is Coach Luke Urban- 93 Left to right - front: T. Perry, L. Alves, S. Winners of 14 out of 18, the Urbanmen were led by Captain Tom Karani. Other senior starters were Paul Bogan, Bill Astle and Willie McDonald, with John Manteiga, a junior, as the other regular. The Class of ’53 was represented on the squad also by Paul Moore, Brud Larocque, Bob Garrity, Bobby Shea, Phil Wetterland and Joe Costa. The season’s record was as follows: Durfee 57 Rogers 46 Durfee 58 Attleboro 60 Durfee 52 Holyoke 44 Durfee 48 Taunton 35 Durfee 60 Taunton 39 Durfee 73 Alumni 59 Durfee 60 New Bedford 45 Durfee 43 New Bedford 54 Durfee 60 Coyle 71 Durfee 48 Brockton 46 Durfee 54 N. Voke 49 Durfee 56 Atth iboro 47 Tournament Games Durfee 54 Arlington 43 Durfee 60 Salem 45 Mission 50 Durfee 44 A 7-3 record in league competition gave the Hilltoppers a tie with New Bedford, and both were invited to the tournament. While our Whaling City rivals were knocked out by Salem in the opener, Durfee had little difficulty stopping Arlington. In the semi-finals, Salem also fell before the Urbanmen but our boys dropped the final to the determined Mission High quintet of Roxbury. A darkhorse quintet when the season began, Durfee, guided by the experience and genius of Coach Luke Urban, achieved success beyond expectation. 97 BASEBALL The early deadline on Record Book copy prevents summarization of the '53 campaign. Despite the loss of several key men from last year's Bristol County Champions, returning lettermen and varsity reserves indicate that an- other successful campaign is in store for the Urbanmen. Pitchers Ray Medeiros, Dick Conte and Bill McHenry form the nucleus of a strong hurling staff, while Gendreau, Hathaway, Perry, Alves, Roden and Gesner all seek infield berths. With Tacovelli and Gendreau the only outfield holdovers, Coach Urban faces a rebuilding task. Behind the plate is George Frazer, last season’s starter, bolstered by John Correiro and Len Leduc. After capturing the County crown, the ’52 diamond men advanced to the semi-final round of the State Tournament at Braves Field before being eliminated. TRACK The track team in its second season under Coach Thomas Hammond will be striving to maintain the unblemished record of the '52 team. Having lost his chief point-maker by graduation, the coach will depend in ’53 on Co-captains Paul Bogan and Bill Astle, and holdovers Ronnie Costa, Joe Tavares, Joe Barressi, Ken Jackson, John Gregory, Mort Dubitsky, Leon Cantin, the Kelley twins, John and Vince, and John Manteiga, As the Record Book goes to press, hopes are high for at least six meets — with Attleboro, N. B. Yoke, New Bedford, Taunton, Foxboro and Rogers. 08 Leif to right - first row: B. Keyes. V, Gardella, E. Bergeron. Sri i nil row: B. Mokom, T. LePage, J. Goldberg, J. Aiidirsnn, IM. Wiiish. CHEERLEADERS The Durfee cheerleaders, four seniors and four juniors, made their appearance at all football and basketball games. Attired in red skirts and white sweaters at football games, and in bright corduroy princess-style outfits for the basketball season, the girls led the vocal efforts of the attending crowds in encouragement of the teams. For the ninth succes- sive year the Durfee cheerleaders, like the team, met with enthusiastic applause at the basketball tournament at Boston Garden. In the Spring of her sophomore year, any girl who is receiving a passing grade in all subjects is eligible to try out for the squad. A trio of outside judges selected by the principal, chooses the four finalists who then net as cheerleaders during their junior and senior years. Members of this year’s squad included, Virginia GardelJa, head cheerleader; Joan Anderson, Elizabeth Bergeron, Barbara Keyes, Judy Goldberg, Theresa LePage, Barbara Moson, and Maureen Walsh. Miss Marie V. Shalloo is the faculty advisor. 99 GIRLS’ NUMERAL CLUB 11—11 The Girls’ Numeral Club, under the capable direction of Miss Virginia W. Frost, has progressed rapidly during the past year through a program designed to improve and encourage athletics among girls. The fall season produced “a sport for everyone” when volleyball and badminton doubles tournaments were held, and a bowling league formed. Christmas vacation brought the annual alumnae reunion at which the alumnae and present members competed in bowling and basketball games. This was followed by a social period where movies and refresh- ments were enjoyed. Through the cooperation of the graduates, the active members and the faculty advisor, an alumnae association was formed. This group will hold an annual banquet for senior members at which the awards for the year will be given. The basketball season opened with a basketball clinic when the G, N. C. girls demonstrated skills and techniques for the freshman girls throughout the public school system. The Numeral Club also sponsored a Freshman Sports Day at which girls were given an opportunity to put into practice basketball techniques which they had learned. Under the sponsorship of the Numeral Club members a successful Sophomore Basketball Tournament was held. Participants were mem- bers of the different sophomore classes who were coached by their class gym leaders. The winning team was awarded the G. N. C. Trophy, 100 Left to right - First row: L. Ramos, GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL The Durfee Girls1 Basketball team joined with eleven other high schools in the area to form the Narragansett Interscholastic League. The f unction of this organization is to plan schedules, make rules, and to en- courage team play and good sportsmanship. This year the girls played eight scheduled games. At the end of the season the league held its second annual Sports Day at Somerset High School. The twelve teams played basketball and then participated in a social hour. At Durfee a position on the team may be attained by any girl who possesses knowledge of the game and meets the physical and scholastic requirements. When a player engages in the required number of games she is eligible to receive an Old English D. 101 sOfieu 102 Acknowledgement We of the Record Book staff are deeply grateful for the assistance we have received in publishing the 1953 edition of the Annual.
