su immuusirrs ihsmbs TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF THE B. M. C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL: ft seems a good deal less than a year ago that we were accorded the privilege of congratulating your immediate predecessors. You will find as you grow older, that time has really the. fleeting quality the poet attributes to it. This preciousness of time is something you must bear in nund if you are going to achieve the high deeds to which every young person should aspire. There is a great deal of sentiment about high school graduation. It is right and proper that there should be, even though sometimes in the cynicism of youth, we fend to be suspicious of the arch-sentimentality which adults give it. It is truly, under- neath all the rhetoric, a significant period in one’s life where he turns either eagerly or reluctantly from the preoccupations of childhood to the concerns of adulthood. Some things of youth you must maintain all through your life if you are going to be happy and effective. Optimism is one of these things; self-confidence, another; curi- osity. a third. These qualities, together with the deeper training of high school, are the things on which you must build. We know that you will keep them and that, despite the disheartening characteristics of the modern world and of adult behavior as you sometimes sec it, you will preserve the idealism without which everything is bitter as ashes. My very best wishes to you all and my heartiest congratulations for what you have achieved. In expressing these sincere good wishes, I know T am speaking not only for myself, but for all the people in Fall River to whom you owe the opportunity for the education which you have had, and who ask of you, not gratitude, but only conduct and accomplishments of which they can be proud. Sincerely yours, Superintendent of Schools. pjmnijpjii's iH5i ijf]fj TO THE CLASS OF 1952: As you enter upon the traditional ceremonies marking' your graduation from Ii. M. C. Durfee High School, I can detect in you that same eagerness to meet the challenge of the future that has characterized graduates of a less turbulent time. It is precisely this elastic quality of youth that is reassuring to a generation that looks with something less than pride upon the state of world affairs today. You are of the atomic age: even now, television and jet propulsion are almost commonplace to you. You have come to expect great things of science, of medicine; and you are convinced that there are yet greater worlds for you to conquer. You must also realize, I an sure, that there is a dire need in the world today for men and women of strong character, of personal integrity. Greatness of achieve- ment in a material way loses its significance for the nation or for the individual unless it is accompanied by greatness of spirit. The community, the state, and the nation look to the graduates of 1952 for citizenship and leadership marked by true Godliness and devotion to duty. It is my sincere hope that your training at Durfee has helped prepare you to serve with distinction and honor in the career of your individual choice; and I am indeed happy to congratulate you upon the successful completion of your senior high school course. Shakespeare had the gift of expression, so we are going to borrow a phrase from the old master. Someday you, too, will sit down and remi- nisce. Do you think you can remember the outstanding things of your freshman year? No! — Well then, let us of the Record Book staff relate to you some of the things that were once fresh in your minds. One of the things that should never have left your mind was the winning of New England Interscholastic Basketball Championship. Many of our stars of ’51 and ’52 were starting then to mingle with those stars of ’48. When we arrived in ’48, most of us joined one club or another, and if we think real hard, we can remember the feats of the Music Club, the Dramatic Club, and all the clubs that we as freshmen helped to make better for next year’s members. We should also remember the opening of the Girls’ Gym in the Durfee building after many years. The beginning of the German Club and the Record Club were two other notable activities. Aside from social activities, we must not forget the scholastic end of school. During the first half of our freshman year we had two fellow students who made the A11-A list, and fifteen who made the Principal’s List. Arrival at Durfee for the first time presented its difficulties. There were two big buildings for us to roam through instead of the usual one. We should also remember how students separated themselves, the upper classmen under the Big Tree and lower in front of Tech. Everything was new but now things are old; it’s funny how we get to like the old things even though the new are better. It is now time for us seniors to pass or. to better things that are yet to come, but none of us should forget the good times spent under the influence of B. M. C. D.— The majority of us entered Durfee in our sophomore year. For us newcomers it was quite a difficult task to find our way around the two buildings but that task was accomplished within a few weeks. Activi- ties got underway almost immediately and those who were interested could join the clubs they desired. Hilltoppers found it rough in their first four football games of the treason, losing three of them. The remainder of the season they won three and lost three, December brought Miss Ladd's presentation of the “Christmas Story in which many of us took part. Football players were honored by S. A, A, at their annual banquet. Basketball came in with a sparkle, the Hilltoppers beating Rogers High 35-30 in their opening game. They kept up their good record by losing only three the remainder of the season. The Dramatic Club gave us a wonderful presentation of “Belvedere Sitting Pretty”. Three members of the Class of '52 who took part were Doris Fish. Alan Mart and Robert L rchevesque. The All-State Concert was held in Boston on Saturday, April 1. And, as was to be expected, Durfee had a successful season in baseball. Several school dances were held — the “Get Acquainted Dance” the “Pigskin-Hop”, and the “Mid-Winter-Hop”. Elections of class officers were held with these results: President, Andy Farrissey; Vice-President, Jean Gagnon; Secretary, Moreen Curt; Secretary to the S. A. A., Joan Kaufmann ; S. A. A. Councillors Jean Crawford and Kenneth Marum. June surely came sooner than we expected but we didn't feel too bad leaving school for our summer vacation, because we knew that we had two more enjoyable years at Durfee. J U J] J IMS § Next to the senior year the junior year in high school is probably the most memorable, and before we knew it September, 1950 had arrived and we were juniors. Joe Drayton, Ed Reid, Bob McMahon, and Bill Piche were among our classmates who displayed their talents on the gridiron. The Dra- matic Club was anticipating a busy year. Alan Hart and Marion Ferreira were two of its officers. Everyone was thrilled to see a large turnout at the first dance of the year, the “Pumpkin Ball”, sponsored by the Student’s Activities Association. Frank Patton was elected to head the Red Cross Council, with two other members of our class as vice- president and secretary. With all the excitement of getting back to school, football games, school dances and Dramatic Club presentations, the end of the first term came almost unnoticed. Nevertheless, five juniors attained All-A Honors and thirty were on the principal's list. Then came the impressive Thespian induction at which eight of our talented classmates became members. The annual Thanksgiving game was played at Alumni Field and although Durfee lost this heartbreaker to its strongest rival, New Bedford High, it was a most enjoyable and terrific game. December flew in accompanied by basketball, and the preparation of the music groups and Dramatic Club for their yearly Christmas presentations. Then came vacation and a new year 1951 had rolled around. Our basketball team was leading the Bristol County League. The javvees were the only undefeated junior varsity team in the Bristol County loop. Among those up and coming athletes leading the team were juniors Ronald Golz and Alan Freeman. Our musicians were still making headlines. In the middle of February a group of them left to take part in the All-State Orchestra and Chorus. Carol Booth, Wilma Taylor and Donald Bravo were a few of Durfee’s virtuosos. At this time the Dramatic Club presented the “Glass Menagerie” for its “Curtain at Eight” performance. Henry Tavares, one of the club's outstanding acto rs, starred. The Uilltoppers, winners of the Bristol County League Champion- ship, played in the Tech Tourney for the seventh straight year but lost in the opening round. Assemblies for SAA members were held, sparked by Harvey Fine, former Durfeeite, as Master of Ceremonies. The Music Department presented the Gilbert and Sullivan operatta “H. M. S. Pinafore”. The combination of the work of these two witty composers and Durfee pupils provided enjoyable entertainment for all those who were on hand. May rolled around along with election of class officers. Andrew Farrissey was elected president of the class of '52; appointment of the Hilltop editor. Dramatic Club presentation of “Four to Go”, a selection of Speakers Bureau members, the baseball season, the Records Club poll, and the unforgettable Junior Prom. Over one hundred couples attended and the affair was a wonderful success. Betsy Goss was the winner of the junior public speaking contest. Twenty one juniors were chosen for membership in the National Honor Society and were inducted at the memorable induction ceremony at the beginning of June. ii i o ;i 3 Re-entering Durfee last September, we all realized that it was our last year here. We had to work hard for that diploma and knowing what it would mean to us, we all took precautions. Obtaining a high school diploma would signify four successful years at Durfee and maybe success in the world for years to come. Career Day, sponsored by the Guidance Office, was held in the Auditorium for the senior class. It interested us and helped us to con- sider the future more seriously. Our school sponsored three dances, the “Get Acquainted Dance”, the “Pigskin Hop” and the “Fall Frolic”. The cheerleaders and football players were honored at the “Pigskin Hop”. Durfee’s football record was four wins, three loses and a tie. Maybe we can’t brag about it too much, but we can certainly be proud of the fine team spirit and sportsmanship they showed us. Our cheerleaders, too. are people we can be proud of. Christmas season came with a special program presented by over MOO students. Then came something we all loved, our holiday vacation. The final of the Senior Debate Tournament was held at our as- sembly, with the negative team, consisting of Raylah Reitzas, Cecilia Philipe and Elaine Seigel the victors. Ronald Golz was elected Durfee’s representative to Student Gover 11ment Day. The Dramatic Club’s “Curtain at Fight” production of “Rebecca was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The Mid-Winter-Hop was as successful as all the other dances recently held. Durfee certainly showed outstanding ability in basketball. Knock- ing Attleboro out of the pennant race was quite exciting, especially since it gave us the opportunity of going to Boston Garden. As the Record Book goes to the press before Durfee starts baseball, we all know that they will have a successful season. Reviewing the three or four years that we have spent at Durfee, we look back to the good times we have had. Now we are looking forward to our class day, graduation, the prom, and the pride that will till our hearts when we receive our B. M. C. Durfee High School diploma. £ N N CS ANDREW J. STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students’ Activities Association, the nucleus of all school ac- tivities, is the only organization whose membership is open to all students. Under the direction of its governing body, the Student Council, this organization has had a particularly busy and successful year. To orientate freshmen and sophomores, the Students’ Activities Association issued the Durfee Guidebooks and presented the annual clubs assembly. Beginning with the football pep rally, the program of activities preceded with the first school dance, the Fall Frolic. The drive for Students’ Activities Association membership was con- ducted in November. Later in the month, the Pigskin Hop was held for our football team, whose prowess we also recognized with the Thanks- giving victory celebration and the football banquet in December. The Mid-Winter. Hop began the social life of Durfee in the New Year and was followed later in February by the Cupid’s Frolic. This year two Students’ Activities Association assemblies were offered — one in January and the other in May. The spring season was highlighted by the school officers’ banquet. Besides these social events, the Students’ Activites Association also transacted some very important school business. For the first time in Durfee’s history the Student Council voted to accept the policy of having a standard school ring for at least a five-year period. As its major project, the Council undertook to revise the Durfee Guidebooks. Cecelia Felipe, ’52, is president of the Council; Norma Pereira, ’53, vice-president; Pauline McCarthy, ’54, secretary. Other members are Andrew Farrissey, senior president Jean Craw- ford and Robert Mullen, senior councillors; Joan Kaufmann, president of the home room directors; Frank Patten, president of the National Honor Society; Eleanor Dubiel, president of the junior class; Joan Powers and Raymond LeRocque, junior councillors; Stephen Nawrocki, president of the sophomore class; Maureen Walsh and Major Whee- lock, sophomore councillors; John Hathaway, president of the freshman class, and Warren St.Pierre, freshman councillor. 72 Left to right - seated - C. During the past year stu- dents have saved on the average of $400 each week. Home room directors collect the deposits from the students, after which they take them to the bank cashiers who are stationed in both Technical and Durfee offices. When each deposit is checked the cashier places them in a locked bag which is picked up by a special bank messenger. A report of each home room is then made by these cashiers and sent to the Principal. On Mondays the locked bags are returned, when special cashiers distribute the envelopes to the various home rooms so that the cycle may begin again on Tuesday. An important feature of our savings program is the distribution to seniors of all the money they have saved during their school years. This takes place first previous to graduation and is most welcomed by each student. 73 Left to right - M. Dailey, C. Kwareinski, J. Conti. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is composed of students interested in photog- raphy who want to learn the ‘'secrets” behind a good picture. Speakers talk on such subjects as composition, films, taking flash photographs, developing, printing and enlarging of photographs. The club’s outside activities include a field trip, a contest and a party at the end of the year. The officers are John Conti, president; Michael Dailey, vice-presi- dent: and Charlotte Kwareinski, secretary. The faculty advisor is Mr. Joseph J. Lawlor. 74 Seated - G. Once more I was trembling at the tryouts - hooray! I got in! At the Hallowe’en party which soon followed, I got acquainted with the other 99 Dramatic Club members. How I envied the girls in TNT acting with those big senior Thespians! These original plays, “The Comeback,” “The Case of Charles Fleming,” “Rose of the Gypsies,” and “Skipalong’s Last Roundup” were fine. We had our biggest audiences at them. I got my chance as one of the children in the Birds’ Christmas Carol,” given for the grammar schools. We repeated parts of it for two Christmas parties. The next big play we did was “Rebecca,” which everyone liked. Of course, I didn’t appear in it, but they talked about me all evening. The club took part in a dramatic arts festival at Emerson College, Boston. Henry Tavares recited there and everyone liked it. We drove over to see “Hamlet” in Aldrich High School, Warwick. R. 1. The Little Theatre wanted us to see the dress rehearsals of all their three plays. We put on a play at assemblies, one at Mt. St. Mary’s Aca- demy, another at the Catholic Memorial Home, a third for a teachers’ study group, and, of course, one at the Drama Festival, where eight other schools joined us at Durfee. “Fair to Go,” with the teachers giving a comedy, too, rounded out a line year, which ended with the Speech Banquet. 77 w p o o 1—I E-1' B cs Left to right - seated - N. This year’s subject was “Resolved: That College Varsity Football be Abolished.” Varsity debaters were Rona Bernstein, Betsey Goss, Captain Nancy Jackson and Erwin Krasnow. Alternates were Eleanor Dubiel and Berna Bernstein. Other members of the team served as chairmen and timekeepers at the various debates. At the beginning of this season, four of our members attended the New England Debating Clinic held at Middlesex School in Concord. Betsey Goss represented Durfee in the impromptu speech contest. In the evening the group heard a debate between Harvard and Boston College. Last year's Speech Banquet was sponsored by the Debating Team. Another activity of the team was the presentation of gavels to the winners of the Senior Debating Tournament. 79 Seated - N. Silver. Left to right - standing - M. Lepow, S. Rudolph, N. Cowen. FRENCH CLUB The French Club, known as 4Le Cercle Francais,” is now in its fourth year of existence. The Club, with a membership limited to twenty-live, meets twice monthly. Its purpose is to foster all interest in French Culture, Customs, and Civilization, in ways which cannot well be pursued in class. In past years many interesting projects were presented for the whole school, including art exhibits, construction projects and a very successful French tea. It is hoped to repeat the latter this year. The Club officers this year are: President, Nita Silver; Vice-presi- dent, Michellen Lepow; Secretary, Sheila Rudolph; Treasurer, Nancy Cowen. Club adviser is E. B. Campbell. 80 Left to right - P. Slusack, M. Munroe, L. Meeting programs consist of guest speakers, slides and movies of German culture. An exhibition on Germany was on display in the li- brary corridor and consisted of travel posters, scenes of present-day German life, a replica of a German Alpine village and examples of early German costumes. The culture of Germany, together with its history and its literature, has served as a foundation on which Der Deutsche Verein has been built. Officers for the year were Margaret Munro, president; Leonor Araujo, vice-president; and Patricia Slusack. secretary. Miss Marie V, Shalloo is the faculty adviser. 81 Left to right - J. Winslow, N. Although its membership is limited to the sophomore class, the whole school benefits from its projects. The Health Club sponsored two assemblies during the year. At one they had as their speaker, Dr. Simon Isserlis, president of the Fall River Dental Society. The other was held to announce the 1951-1952 Annual Clean-Up Campaign. This assembly consisted of the reading of the list of cleaning duties, a few short speeches by the officers of the different health organizations and a health movie. As a whole, the Health Club had a very successful year. THE HILLTOP To the student body the Hilltop, with its news stories, editorial comments, athletic notes, vocational and personal columns, is a signifi- cant part of our life here. Throughout its 31 years of publication, the Hilltop has been a valuable medium for publicizing school activities and offering the staff an opportunity to apply the fundamentals of journalism learned from the text book to the practical task of publishing the paper. The responsibility for a good paper rests not only on the writers but on the readers as well. Because of the splendid cooperation and interest of the student body, the facutly, the advertisers, and especially Mr. John T. Crowley, the staff's mentor, it is pleasant to relate that the 51-52 Hilltop was a successful series of publications. The only departure from the traditionally high standard has been the curtailment of the number of issues due to rising costs. The following members of the staff guided the Hilltop through the year: Editor-in chief, Ora Beth Ruderman; Business Manager, Patricia Slusack; Sports features, Donald Hyslop and Hugh Neville; Reporters and columnists, Lois Feinberg, Theresa Maher, Natalie Telles and Natalie Wilson. 83 I,eft to right - J. It is composed of boys and girls, each of whom is elected by his home room early in the year. The Home Room Directors is the only organization that may hold its meetings during school hours. At the close of the year a party is held for all directors to show the apprecia- tion of the school for their services. The duties of the directors are numerous. They include both home room tasks and the selling of school tickets. The group tries also to increase contributions to the Junior Red Cross and to the Red Feather and the Anti-tuberculosis campaigns. Every Tuesday morning on Bank Day, the directors act as tellers for the pupils who make deposits in the school savings account. The officers of the Home Room Directors are a senior president and a Junior vice-president-secretary, The president becomes a member of the Student Council and the vice-president-secretary keeps the records of the meetings. Joan Kaufmann, president, and Jacqueline Wong, secretary, were elected to lead the group during the past year. Miss Mildred V, Carroll is the faculty advisor. 84 Left to right - first row - P. This aim is carried out at every meeting. Members discuss their original short stories, plays, poems, character sketches and essays. A tile of club work is kept, and some of the alumni become professional writers. The two monthly meetings have afforded an excellent chance for young authors to present their work and for other club members to hear and criticize the work of others. Officers are Rhoda Weingard, president; Regina Levy, vice-presi- dent; and Paula Prial, secretary. 8 LIBRARY AIDES (Officers) Left to right - seated - D. Weingard, IT. Domingos. Standing - L. They are chosen by Miss Foulkes, the librarian, and those Library Aides serving from the Principal’s and All-A Lists. The Library Aides assist Miss Foulkes in directing the library. They distribute, check and deliver library passes to the study halls. When new books are received, they help to catalogue them and review them from the student point of view. They assist students in locating books, and prepare material for special projects under the supervision of the librarian. They try to keep the library attractive at all times by dusting, straightening shelves, arranging books, and preparing displays for the library corridor. Each year they present some special program in ob- servance of Book Week. This year they participated with the Fall River Public Library in presenting the first book fair ever to be held in this city. H6 LIBRARY AIDES Left to right - first row - G. Appel, A. Duffy, H. That is about one thousand a week, which is fifty per cent of the student body. The school library has material to supply all of these students with whatever they need. Not only is the library a place to do reference work, but also it is a place for leisure time reading, with many good fiction, travel, biography and sport books. The attractiveness of the library makes it an ideal place to re- ceive guests, and hold debates, musicales, lectures and meetings. They spend study periods in the library, and are there surrounded by all the material they need for retaining high scholastic standings. They get a personal satisfaction out of their attractive library, and they help to keep it at its best. As a club, they have socials during the year. Their greatest satisfaction, however, comes from the realization that the school library is serving more and more pupils each month, and trying to build up a real interest in books. They are proud of the library and are glad to serve the school as aides. S7 Left to right - H. Kane, G. Shapiro, M. Enos. MATHEMATICS CLUB The Mathematics Club, Durfee’s newest organization, has com- pleted its third consecutive year under the direction of Mr, Joseph B. D'Adamo. The club is open to all sophomore, junior and senior students who are interested in mathematics and who have had at least one year of algebra. It was formed to promote interest in mathematics and to study certain interesting matters connected with the subject which do not usually find a place in the classroom. The meetings are held monthly. The business meeting is followed by a talk and discussion on some mathematical subject given by an in- vited speaker. During the year the club planned a school mathematics tourna- ment and representatives of the club took part in the mathematics tour- nament at Tufts College. Medford. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY This society, the only purely honorary organization in our school, selects its members from the upper 25 percent of the junior and senior classes. To be eligible for election, the student must not only rank high scholastically, but must also exemplify qualities of service, leadership, and character. Those who are chosen as members of the society are in- ducted during a very impressive, formal ceremony. This year, under the leadership of Frank Patten, president; Deborah Radovsky, vice-president; and John Bianchi, secretary, the society has continued to carry on the Tutoring Bureau, the aim of which is to assist in their studies pupils who have missed school through neces- sary absence. The society has also added to its program, a cultural fall Coffee flour, as well as the Spring Tea for new members. The National Honor Society does much to stimulate students to excel in the four traits requisite to membership. 89 Left to right - D. Ricardo, W. Tavares, I). Sarmento, L. Soares, M, Krawetz, R. A. activities. Amongst other activities one that deserves commendation is Par- ent's Night, an open house during which the pupils entertain their parents. Many other activities are carried on, all tending to improve the knowledge of the great civilization which is the Portuguese Empire and Brazil. Another aim of the club is to educate its members in the extensive- ness and importance of the resources controlled by the Portuguese speaking people concentrated in South America and Africa. Those learning Portuguese may have an important role to play in days to come. The purpose of the club is not only to acquaint the novice with music but also to create a better understanding and to pro- mote a greater interest in classical and semi-classical music. Each year the club presents an assembly for the entire student body. The whole club participates in this performance. Additions are made to the collection of records already acquired by former members. To facilitate passage from building to building, doors must be opened before the closing bells ring so there will be no congestion or tardiness to the. next class. It is the duty of the Squad to place “Road Glossed” signs on Rock Street so there will be no automobile traffic to hinder the quick and easy passing between build- ings. Members of the Squad also assisted in police duty at the football games at Alumni Field. The squad is under the direction of Miss Alice Harrington. In their next outing, the Durfee squad pulled through in tine style by edging Attleboro 6-0. The Durfee team marched 55 yards to their lone touchdown. Durfee then played a 6-6 tie with St. Raphael and then lost to a highly spirited New Bedford Yoke team, 7-6. After losing to a big, powerful, and fast Taunton team by the score of 35-24, the Hilltoppers pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year by beating Coyle, 13-7. Coyle had a clean slate of 7-0 when they came to Alumni Field on Armistice Day. Junior Bill Astle and Co-Captain Bob McMahon scored on passes by Harpo McHenry. With a stout defense, led by line-backers Charley Sincoski, Co-Captain Andy Farrissey and Joe Drayton, the Durfee team stopped the highly rated ground attack of Coyle. In the traditional Thanksgiving Day game, Durfee beat New Bed- ford 32-0. The Whalers were stopped time and again by the line play of Bill Piehe and the pass defense of Skip Karam and Joe Drayton. Harpo McHenry again threw touchdown passes to Bob McMahon and Andy Farrissey. Drayton scored two and Joe Richards one touchdown to com- plete the scoring. The team finished with a 4-3-1 record and several players received mention on All-Star teams. Farrissey, Gutter, Piche and Drayton all received due recognition on the various mythical elevens. 99 Left to right - Seated - J. Borden, T, Karam, W. McHenry, T. Burke, R. Mickool, F. NasifT. BASKETBALL Defeating: New Bedford High in the final three seconds, earning the right to compete in the finals of the Headmasters’ Tournament on Ronnie Goltz’s shot in a “sudden death” period, winning the Eastern Massachusetts and Bristol County championships were some of the thrills experienced by Coach Luke Urban's sensational basketball team. On Dec. 29, playing at New Bedford, Durfee lost to the Crimson after leading most of the game. Despite the bitterness of defeat, it was In this game the dominant spirit of team play that characterized this club, was born. This spirit, plus a determination to play the game, no matter what the odds, brought them to victory in their next fifteen games, including two championships. Durfee edged Dorchester in the opener of the Headmasters' Tour- ney but in the semi-finals met one of the best teams in the tournament, Lawrence Central. Tn this game, which many believe to be the most thrilling ever played in the tourney’s long history, Ronnie Golz tied the game in overtime and then won it in “sudden death”. Tn the finals against Somerville Durfee’s regulars, Capt. Andy Farrissey, Hot) McMahon, Alan Freeman, Ron Golz and Skip Karam, played brilliant basketball to win their third tournament in six years. Reserves Bogan, Burke, NasifT. Costa and McDonald saw plenty of action. Golz won the Henry P. McCarthy Award for the outstanding player in the tourney and along with Karam was named to the All-Tourney team. Durfee lost to Rogers in the opening game of the New Englands, 40 - 35. McMahon and Karam were selected on numerous All-Bristol County teams and McMahon was adwarded the George Kaplan Trophy as Durfee's Outstanding Basketball Player. 100 VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is an organization of Durfee boys who have earned a varsity letter in the field of interscholastic athletics. This year the club was extremely active in preparation for the annual Varsity Night. It marked the tenth year that the Club planned a show for the public for the purpose of purchasing sweaters for all those who earned a letter during the year. Since talent and experience were lacking this year, our director, Miss Elizabeth L. Leonard, gave all her spare time in trying to make this tenth show a great success. Club members and their friends are looking forward to the annual outing at Coach Urban’s lakeside lodge. It has always been enjoyed by all and we hope that this year the same spirit will continue. Officers are Robert McMahon, president; Joseph Gutter, vice- president; William McHenry, secretary; Paul Bogan, treasurer. Coach Luke Urban is faculty advisor. 102 BASEBALL The early deadline on Record Book copy prevents summarization of the '52 campaign. Prospects are bright for another good season with Bob McMahon, Andy Farrissey, Bill (Harpo) McHenry, Ed. Reid and Southpaw Bob Mikool, veterans of last year's Bristol County champions, returning. With capable reserves returning: from last year’s squad, Coach Urban hopes to put together a good club, Durfee represented this area in the State Tournament at Fenway Park last year and was eliminated in the semi-final round. TRACK Coach Tom Hammond has scheduled live meets for his track team this season. Interest in track is gaining rapidly and with Capt. Charley Sincoski, Joe Drayton, Paul Bogan, Joe Gutter and Bob Mullen of last year’s squad returning, Coach Hammond hopes to better the record of two wins and three losses of the 1951 outfit. High point of the Durfee season last year was a win over highly rated N. B. Yoke at New Bedford, Taunton was also a victim of the Hilltoppers’ speed and stamina. Inability to garner points in the dashes cost Durfee victory in the other meets and Coach Hammond is anxious to discover among the candidates some speedsters who can pick up points in the 50, 100 and 220 yard events. 103 Left to right - first row - V. Dressed in red skirts and white sweaters during the football season, and in red and black woolen outfits at basketball games, the girls led the cheers for the team, at the same time entertaining the spectators with their intricate formations. The thrill of the year came when they made their appearance at the basketball tournament at Boston Garden. In the spring of her sophomore year, any girl who is receiving a passing grade in all subjects is eligible to try out for the squad. A trio of outside judges, selected by the principal, chooses the four finalists who then act as cheerleaders during their junior and senior years. Members of this year’s squad include Vivian Brabant, head cheer- leader; Joan Kaufmann, Nancy Pollock, Elaine Siegel, Joan Anderson, Elizabeth Bergeron, Virginia Gardella and Barbara Keyes. This season, the team captured third place in their division of the league, bowing to Case in a playoff for second place. i 105 I GIRLS’ NUMERAL CLUB The Girls’ Numeral Club is an organization devoted to the promo- tion of girls’ sports at Durfee. The total membership of sixty girls includes twenty seniors, twenty juniors, and twenty sophomores. Sophomores are chosen according to their participation in the yearly sports events and by the majority of votes. These candidates are not admitted until after the Thanksgiving recess and may become members by invitation only. Numerals must be earned during the first year to retain member- ship in the club. Numerals and awards are earned by active participa- tion in basketball, volleyball, badminton, bowling, gymnasium leading, refereeing and by committee work. While sports are emphasized, many social gatherings such as the Alumnae Reunion and the Spring Outing are part of the club’s activi- ties. 106 Acknowledgement We of the staff are grateful to all who have assisted in the produc- tion of the Record Rook, We appreciate the cooperation we have received, and gladlv ac- knowledge our indebtedness to the following; Our classmates, for their promptness in submitting glossies; Photographers, engravers, printers, and binders, for their efficient, courteous service.
