A Message .... From Our Superintendent To the Graduating Class of 1948: Graduation is one of those significant incidents in life which mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new. Viewed generally it's an old and familiar story of hundreds of thousands of young Americans who have achieved intellectual, social and physical progress from adolescence to young manhood and young womanhood. As such it marks the continuance of a tradition, hoary but ever fresh. As part of that tradition you are the just recipients of congratulations and well wishes. Each one of you is an individual, however, and, while justly proud of joining the everlasting stream of those who came before and those who will follow, you must be feeling the disturbing and contrary thoughts of past triumph and future uncertainty. A pessimist would warn you of the bleak and threatening aspects of our times. But you are young and, therefore, more secure in your self-possession than you will ever be. Keep that quality as long as you can. Keep, too, the enthusiasm of your age and the fearlessness that goes with being young. For, despite the chaos you see about you, people are basically good, and, if allowed, will make a world God fearing and peaceful. There is opportunity for every interest ahd every aptitude if fortified by your youthful drive and freedom from prejudice. Take the skills you have acquired and the maturity you have wong direct them intelligently. Then you will achieve the useful and happy lives which those of us who are older wish to all young people at all times but in particular at this time to you. Sincerely, WILLIAM S. LYNCH.
