DOROTHY BRADSHAW MARY SEWELL BETTY NELSON JANET PARKER JANET PARKER JANET PARKER YVETTE CAOUETTE LOUISE DURFEE - A Message .... From Our Superintendent To the Graduating Class of 1948: Graduation is one of those significant incidents in life which mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new. Viewed generally it's an old and familiar story of hundreds of thousands of young Americans who have achieved intellectual, social and physical progress from adolescence to young manhood and young womanhood. As such it marks the continuance of a tradition, hoary but ever fresh. As part of that tradition you are the just recipients of congratulations and well wishes. Each one of you is an individual, however, and, while justly proud of joining the everlasting stream of those who came before and those who will follow, you must be feeling the disturbing and contrary thoughts of past triumph and future uncertainty. A pessimist would warn you of the bleak and threatening aspects of our times. But you are young and, therefore, more secure in your self-possession than you will ever be. Keep that quality as long as you can. Keep, too, the enthusiasm of your age and the fearlessness that goes with being young. For, despite the chaos you see about you, people are basically good, and, if allowed, will make a world God fearing and peaceful. There is opportunity for every interest ahd every aptitude if fortified by your youthful drive and freedom from prejudice. Take the skills you have acquired and the maturity you have wong direct them intelligently. Then you will achieve the useful and happy lives which those of us who are older wish to all young people at all times but in particular at this time to you. Sincerely, WILLIAM S. LYNCH. A Message . . . From Our Principal Many members of the Class of 1948 have already distinguished themselves in scholarship, dramatics, music, debating and athletics. Their achievements should motivate all of the class to strive for dis- tinction in their life work, because, by following good examples and setting up high ideals, prospects for better living are greatly enhanced. May the training that the members of this class have received in B. M. C. Durfee High School help them toward a successful future as good citizens of their country. Good luck! Godspeed! CHARLES V. Following in regular order were the Club As- sembly, the program of which was afterwards presented to the Fall River Rotary Clubg the Pigskin Hop at which this year's championship football team was honoredg and the annual Football Banquet. Between times, the S. A. A. Went on an excursion to the fall meeting of the Student Councils of Southeastern Massachusetts and conducted a mem- bership drive. Guide booklets were again presented to the sophomores and freshmen. In the later half of the year, the Council sponsored an assembly for all the members ofthe S. A. A., one of the many high spots of the school year. The Mid-Winter Hop turned out to be another excep- tionally fine event. The Oilicers Banquet and the Awards Assembly, at which deltas were presented to the major office holders in the school, wound up the school year. One of our own members appeared as piano soloist in the All State orchestra. Another member took an active part in debating and was on the State champion football team. Still another member played on the New England champion basketball team. Sponsored in the spring term by the Student Council were the Junior Prom and a special talents assembly. 79 Left to right: Barbara Brigham, Vice-Presidentg John J. Moriarty, Presidentg Eleanor Maines, Secretary. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is a purely honorary organization, thc membership of which is chosen each year from the upper twenty-five percent of the Junior and Senior classes. Today, students strive for membership in the National Honor Society because the society symbolizes the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character - qualities which every high school student should develop. A charter was granted to our school in 1936, and since that year pupils have been elected each Spring and inducted at an impressive ceremony. This year saw the establishment of a student aid bureau, the first in the history of the school. Members of the National Honor Society gave help to students during study periods and after school in subjects in which these pupils wished aid. The bureau was especially invaluable to those who had missed important class work through a prolonged absence. Through the edorts of the members and our advisor, Miss Mildred Carroll, we consider this one of the most successful years of the National Honor Society to date. S0 Home Room Directors President, Joseph Raposag Secretary, Joanne Smith The very large group of representative pupils known as the llonu- Room Directors is a most important part of school life. At the begin- ning of the year each home room chooses a boy and a girl director who must satisfy the scholastic requirements of the office. Shortly after, these students elect their president from the senior directors and their vice-president-secretary from the junior directors. The president be- comes a member of the Student Council and is eligible to receive a school delta. The directors perform many duties. These include assisting home room teachers in checking daily attendance and reading the bulletins: promoting campaignsg acting as collectors on bank dayg and being' generally helpful to the school activities in general. MacAyeal, Jacqueline Foss, Nancy Ledoux, Richard Rosenberg, Sports Editor. Other staff mem- bers are Constance Dube and Roberta Kahan. The Hilltop The Hilltop, published weekly by the Journalism ll class under the guidance of Mr. John T. Crowley, has completed twenty-seven years of service to Durfee students. Although this year's staH of eleven members is one of the smallest in its history, the Hilltop has maintained the high standards established by former staffs. Besides unifying school spirit, increasing student interest and par- ticipation in various activities, and acting as a medium of recording the work and play of school life, the Hilltop gives experience to those students who are interested in Journalism. It also enables them to put into practice the fundamentals they have learned in Journalism I, a prerequisite for membership on the staff. This year's staff realizes that much of the success of the paper is attributable to the subscribers and the advertisers for their interest and cooperation. 82 t1'ow. Sanitation Commission During its second year in operation, the Sanitation Cominission, under the capable chairmanship of James Chace and the, guidance of Miss Angeline B. Crispo, has grown in scope and usefulness to the school. . Composed of all class officers, plus the elected leaders of the Sophomore Health Club, the Commission meets weekly to discuss and solve health problems in school and on the campus. x Regular inspection of lockers and desks, clean-up drives, and sani- tation-promoting contests are directed by the group in cooperation with home. room health councillors who compose the lower council under the Commission. 3 One of the main duties ofthe group is the trying of pupils before a commission jury for of'fenses, against school health rules. -.Q . Our Faculty Advisor, Miss Elizabeth L. Leonard, and of- ficers, Lorraine Mello, Presidentg Janet Parker, Vice-Presidentg and Janet Mcllwaine, Secretary, have worked very hard to make this or- ganization a success. The duties of the members of the Bureau are to give brief an- nouncements, in assigned home rooms, about important events that take place during the school year. The speeches of the members given thus far include the one for the Christmas Concert given by the mem- bers of orchestra and chorus, the announcement of T, N. T. presented by the members of the Durfee Dramatic Club, and also the announce- ment of the big play of the year, Junior Missn, also given by members of the Durfee Dramatic Club. The Bureau also has had two outings at which all who attended had a pleasant time. 284 Left to right: Edward Gow, Presidentg Genevieve Arruda, Secretaryg Raymond Briere, Dolores Curt, Barbara Gray. Health Club Our Health Club is one of the most important organizations of the school since it strives to create a ,health-conscious student body. Annually the Health Club holds its Spring-Cleaning campaign, in which the whole school participates. Each day of the clean-up week is dedicated to a particular duty, consistent with fplans df the club. From its members, publicity committees are formed to advertise the cleaning campaign as attractively as possible to induce cooperation in the drive. Worth mentioning is the Health Councillor song, one of the witty advertising methods of the committee. It was being hummed through the corridors, stairs and occasionally in the class room. This tune definitely aided in promoting the huge success of this yearly drive. The club also sponsors health assemblies and conducts activities which encourage the development of healthful habits among the students. This particular group of oiiicers became charter members of the original Sanitation Commission, which was organized in 1945 to meet the growing health needs of the school. However, the successful functioning of the Health Club would not have been possible without the wise guidance of Miss Angeline B. Crispo, Faculty Advisor, and to her, we, its former members, express our sincere appreciation for the pleasant memories associated with the Health Club of B. M. C. Durfee High School. 85 Left to right: Eleanor Maines, Vice-Presidentg Genevieve Arruda, Secretary, Joseph Scanlon, Treasurer, Virginia Gifford, President. Commercial Club The Commercial Club is one of the largest organizations in Durfee High School. Its members are all Commercial Seniors and possess a high rating in all Commercial subjects. The aim of the Commercial Club is to create higher standards of commercial scholarship, greater interest in business education, and to provide vocational guidance, at all times, for its members. During the year the Commercial Club held several business and social meetings. Because of late organization and early Lenten season our social activities were shortened. The Typewriting Speed Contest, Award Day, together with the Club outing, were the outstanding events of the year. The Club has been successful because of the interest and effort shown by our con- scientious oflicers. Mr. George C. Hoar, head of the Commercial Department, is the Club's advisor. 86 Left to right, seated: Joan Andrews, Angela Gardella, Jean Allison, Ruth Austin, Alice Fosta. Standing: Dolores Curt, Phyllis Capone. Bank Cashiers A little over a year ago, the School Savings Cashiers' organization was created to take care of all school bank deposits. Since that time there has been over 314,000.00 deposited through these cashiers. Tues- day morning is Bank Day at Durfee. All Home Room Directors collect deposits and bring them to the cashiers stationed at each oilice. These are checked in, sealed and locked. A report is then typed, showing the deposits from each home room, and the total from each building. A comparison is made with the past three weeks' deposits. A copy is then kept on tile while another is given to the principal. Every Monday morning all bankbooks and home room envelopes are returned from the bank, and two more members of the organiza- tion place them in the respective teachers' boxes, for distribution. Mr. George C. lloar, head of the Commercial Department, is in charge oi' this group. 87 f 'Wi 'gill Ur Ag 'LQ X Y ' 2 ,jf l' 11.1-.viii N-m,,.....W if 'TNQ 2 ' 2 -W - 5 j Hy- Tfbnd 'Vg bakmfmfw. , jf Q' , fy 'V-n.. After the awful try-outs, our Hallowe'en costume party was a grand way to get ac- quainted with the other lucky ones who got in. T. N. T., loaded with it, was written by members and produced by the Theatre of National Thespians. Joan of Arc, Pagliacci, Johnnie and Pearl were simply super. Diary, guess what! I'm a member of the Thespians, National Honor Society for Dramatics, and was inducted at a swell banquet at the Mellen, no less. The Speakers' Bureau took us all on a mystery hike, ending in a Weenie roast at the house of David CDe Lauraj. People are still laughing at our big show, Junior Miss, where Eleanor Maines stole my thunder by being selected the typical Junior Miss of Durfee. At our annual Durfee talent show, Hilltop Revue, Jackie Brenner was chosen as her blind date for an evening. Lastly, Dear Diary, the club sent us to Gloucester to the Massa- chusetts Drama Festival, where I met the smoothest fellow. Our play wasl Papa Is All. He liked it fine and he liked us, too. ,In a-few years parties, plays, trips and Tuesday afternoon meet- ings will be things of the past, but when I open you, dear Diary, or my Record Book, I shall laugh again at the happy memories. Perhaps a few tears may fall on the pictures, but they will be tender ones that recall well the fun of 1947-48 in the dear old D. D. C. Mr. Joseph O. Carroll is faculty advisor. The aims of this organization are to increase our knowledge of science, to learn to perfect our skills in science, to give service to our school, community and nation, to understand the importance of science in our lives and to help carry out the programs of the Science Clubs of America. Any senior or junior student , who is interested in the aims of the club and who is taking a course in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, is eligible for membership. Regular meetings are held after school on Wednesday of each week. Programs are planned for all regular meetings and outings by a committee appointed by the president. Programs for the regular meetings usually consist of scientific demonstrations by members of the club. There are also talks given by outside speakers on some scientific subject. Several visitations are made during the year to important industries. 90 Left to right: David DeLaura. Alan Hampshire, Rose Marie Turiotts, Howard Mac- Ayeal, Murray Lyon, Miss Elizabeth L. The team consisted of David de Laura, Alan Hampshire, Philip Jamoulis, Murray Lyon, Howard MacAyeal and Rose Marie Turcotte. The team resumed its membership in the Narragansett League and debated against Aldrich, Classical, Gorton, and Hope, all in Providence, and against Coyle and Taunton High Schools and the Sacred Heart Academy. Also, the debaters accepted the challenges of two other schools. Although the team has not won all of its debates, the experience gained in speech Work and in good sportsmanship has been priceless. 91 Seated: Roberta Beaven, President. Kernan, the school librarian, is one of the most important of school organiza- tions. The students are chosen annually from the three upper classes for their scholastic standing, dependability, cooperation and general helpfulness. Their duties begin at 8:00 a. m., when passes are issued by two aids until 8:15 a. m. There are several aids on duty during each period, matching passes and carrying them to various study halls, locating pupils, checking shelves, arranging bulletin boards, checking library science material and attendance, and making minor book repairs. The Library Aids are often called upon for other tasks and render efficient service. The following were Library Aids during the school year 1947-48: Roberta Beaven, Christine E. Cabral, James C. Estelle Miles has been its Faculty Advisor. About thirteen years ago Principal Charles V. Carroll obtained permission from the Fall River Police Department to have Do Not Enter signs on Rock Street at the intersections of Cherry and Locust Streets during the time pupils pass from one building to the other. It is one of the duties of the traffic officers to see that these signs are in place. As in previous years traffic officers have been on duty in the cor- ridors during the passing of classes. Although we have had the one- Way system of traffic on the stairways in the Technical Building for several years, We have changed a few of the traffic rules for the benefit of the students. Much credit should be given to the traffic officers because they have to report pupils, even their friends, if they disobey traffic regula- tions. 98 SPORTS Q7 J ...J 20 2 4 fs- O 4 O f ,Q f' km' QSEQIAEV' du ,D NX Q f Q ,Ps-1? f Q7 'They go for +he Cham? Jack Brenner took a pass from Joe Andrews in the final minute of play to give Durfee the win which clinched the State Championship. The Seniors who bore the chief brunt of the team's attack were Jerry Diniz, Ray Samson, Jim Williamson, Jack Brenner, Steve O'Neil, John Reagen, Al Pytel, Don Trevisano, Dick Holmes, Mel Rutter, Howie MacAyeal and Joe Raposa. Reagen, Trevisano, Holmes, and Raposa were All-Bristol County choices along with Joe Andrews, junior fullback, who led all Bristol County scorers with a total of 97 points. 101 X L 15, ffskhkfyg 3 g 1' .rv .ax ,, ani! , . mg A' Q K S sn ,MK A 'ff Nxri nr .wzgfyg 16 . - 'v Q A sf -, 1..?I ' ns 85, ' Q wx, in . f nv- Mfh Af. Champions of New England The Durfee basketball team of 1948 reached the all-time peak of Durfee athletic history by capturing both the Eastern Massachusetts Tournament and the New England Tournament. The team conquered Lynn English, Waltham, and Everett to win the Eastern Massachusetts title and then crushed Westerly, R. I., Cheverus of Portland, Me., and Hillhouse of New Haven to become the hoop kings of New England. Both Andy Farrissey and Stan Sincoski were chosen on the all-New England team. Before heading for the greater glory of Boston Garden, Durfee swept through a difficult schedule of 19 games and won them all. The regular season produced some thrilling encounters with the overtime victory at New Bedford being the highlight of a very fruitful season. The Bristol County Championship was taken by Durfee for the second straight year. Andy Farrissey led all Durfee scorers with 300 points. The three Senior captains, Stan Sincoski, Jack Brenner, and Andy Farrissey, along with Junior Joe Andrews, were chosen on the All-Bristol hoop team. 104 Baseball As the Record Book must go to press before Coach Urban calls out baseball candidates, We have no definite word on the strength of this year's Durfee nine. The Hilltoppers will be out to capture their second consecutive Bristol County League Championship and to complete a clean sweep of Bristol County honors as they have already won both the football and basketball crowns. The team has a number of returning lettermen and if these boys go out for baseball, Durfee has the nucleus of a powerful team. Among the returning Seniors are Ted Rys, ace of the mound staff, and Stan Sincoski, smooth fielding second baseman. Sincoski will also take a turn in the box. Jackie Brenner, All-Bristol third baseman in his Sophomore and Junior years, will be back along with speedy outfielder Ray Samson. Ted Nowicki, who played a number of games at shortstop last season, will attempt to fill the hole created by the graduation of Captain Henry Noga. Regardless of the record his '48 baseball team makes, the year '47-'48 has been undoubtedly one of the grandest in the history of Durfee athletics due largely to the zeal, the know-how and the devotion of Luke Urban, Coach of Champions. 105 Left to right, first row: John Reagan, Richard Holmes, Raymond Samson, James Williamson, Robert MacAyeal, Ronald Lamarre, Ernest Potter. Middle: Roger Roussell, Donald Trevisano, Melvin Rutter, Joseph Andrews, Kenneth Drayton, George Schmoke, Harold Higgins. Top: Frederick Fischer, Joseph Raposa, Charles Burton, Teddy Rys, Howard MacAyeal, Richard Mullens. Varsity Club The Varsity Club, now completing' its 16th successful year, was established for all boys who have won an athletic letter. Highlight of this year's activities was the Club's presentation of Varsity Night. The entertainment consisted of boxing' and wrestling' bouts, and a vaudeville show with the school's athletes participating' as singers, dancers, and Ballerinas . This year's oflicers are: John Brenner, President: Steven O'Neil, Vice-Presidentg Andrew Farrissey, Secretary, and Alex Pytel, Treasurer. Coach Luke Urban is Faculty Advisor. lost Cheerleaders The cheerleaders played an active part during 1947-1948, cheering Durfee's football team to the Class C championship, and the basketball squad to the New England championship. In their red skirts and white sweaters at football games, and their red and black princess-style out- fits during the basketball season, they presented an enthusiastic and colorful sight at our athletic contests. During the school year, the girls led the cheers at the pep rallies and assemblies, and conducted cheering practice for the student body prior to all big games . Many new cheers and formations were in- troduced this year, resulting in many complimentary comments by sport writers and spectators during their appearances at Boston Garden. The group consisted of eight girls, four Seniors and four Juniors. All Sophomores who have the required marks are eligible for the try- outs held in the spring, and those chosen serve on the squad during their Junior and Senior years. The cheerleaders for the past season were Eleanor Maines, head cheerleaderg Phyllis Capone, Norma Tes- sier, Cremilde Torres, Dolores Abdallah, Martha Marchio, Ann Patton, and Mae Shackleton. IMT Left to right, first row: Janet Allen, Barbara Brigham, Dorothy Bradshaw. Margery Sharples, Doris Allen. Middle: Constance Hawkins, Anne Forsack, Janice Leger, Alberta Garell, Lorraine Levesque. Top: Charlotte Meyer, Helen Hammond, Lonise Durfee. Girls' Basketball For the second year in the history of the team the Durfee Girls' Varsity was invited to join the Girls' Narry League. The team was composed of eight Seniors, three Juniors and one Sophomore. A ten-game schedule was agreed upon and out of those ten the Durfee Varsity won five, lost four, and tied one. The purpose of the Girls' Narry League is to promote a better understanding' of the sport and to bring together coaches and players of schools in the league. 1115 PI'CSl'dl'l1f IIIFF-PI'PSI'l't'llf ALBERTA GARELI, LORRAINE LEVESQUE Sc'r'rf'f1lry Fur-ulfy Advisor' IIELEN HAMMOND MISS VIRGINIA W. It is on the basis of their activity and ability to lead a group that the girls are chosen. Fifty-five members comprise the organization. There are twenty Seniors, twenty Juniors and Iifteen Sophomores. The club has a President, Vice-president, and Secretary. Many sports are played, among them volleyball, basketball, soccer, field hockey and bowling. The girls also go to various schools refereeing basketball games. Many social events as well as sports are on the club's calendar.
