The Class of '45 takes this opportunity to express to them its sincere appreciation and wish them many more happy years in the teaching profession. RETIREMENTS Charles C. Earle 1924-1945 The class of 1945 extends its best wishes to Mr. Charles C. Earle and Mr. John G. E. Lord who are retiring this year from the faculty of the B. M. C. Durfee High School. John G. E. Lord 1932-1945 IN MEMORIAM Mr. Daniel J. Sullivan June 26, 1891—February 4, 1945 The Class of 1945 deeply regrets the death of Mr. Daniel J. Sullivan during the present school year. The class extends its sincere sympathy to his wife and family. IN HONOR OF Mr. Hector L. Belisle The Class of 1945 wishes to pay tribute to Mr. Hector L. Belisle who has served the City of Fall River faithfully and well as superintendent of schools during the past thirty-two years. The Class of 1945 wishes Mr. Belisle many happy and pleasant days in the years to come. DLIRFEE STUDENTS PAY TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT On Friday, April 13, 1945, the entire student body of the B. M. C Durfee High School respectfully assembled to honor the memory of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 12, 1945. Principal Charles V. Carroll opened the assembly and called upon Rev- erend Lester Hull of the Sacred Heart Church to lead the students in prayer. Mayor Alexander C. Murray was then introduced and recalled the splendid work which President Roosevelt had done in the service of his country both in peace and during the trying period of war. Mr. Hector L. Belisle, superin- tendent of schools, then addressed the students. His talk, a glowing tribute to the late president, carried the message that a man is great because he possesses three oustanding qualities, vision, courage and faith. That Franklin Delano Roosevelt had vision, courage and faith was shown in his work during the eventful years of 1933 to 1945. This year many members of the senior class have left school to enter the Armed Forces. The Class of 1945 pays diem honor. Many members of the class have already enlisted and are now on inactive duty. Some of these boys will be called before graduation. The Class of 1945 pays them tribute. The usual program of assemblies beginning with the Clubs Assembly in September was held. A highly successful drive for membership in the as- sociation was conducted in October. Several dances have been sponsored: the Pigskin Hop, the Mid-Winter Dance, and the Sophomore Social. In April the annual Officers’ Banquet was given in honor of our school leaders. Two new organizations, the Durfee Debating Club and the Science Club, have been recognized by the Student Council this year. Faculty advisors—Miss Mary Lee, Mr. James F. Conlin, Miss Anne L. O'Neil, treasurer. Robert Murray ’45 Theresa Powers 45 Gilbert Vincent '45 Francisco Cabral ’45 86 HOME ROOM DIRECTORS President ROBERT MURRAY OFFICERS Secretary-Treasurer MARY LOUISE SHEA The Home Room Directors' Organization is the largest elective group in the school. The directors, a boy and girl from each home room, are chosen by the students because of their dependability and scholastic records. The duties of the directors are many. In the home room the directors take the attendance, read the bulletins, stimulate campaigns and take gen- eral charge of opening exercises in the teacher’s absence. This year the directors played a large part in the Red Cross Drive and continued their cooperation in the weekly sale of War Stamps and Bonds. The group, really the junior organization of the S. A. A., has become almost indispensable in carrying out the various yearly projects at Durfee. Miss Mildred V. Carroll is faculty advisor. 87 THE BAND The Band opened its 1944-4 ) season by playing for a football rally. This was followed by several appearances at the games here in Fall River and by two out-of-town trips, one to the Coyle game and one to New Bedford. The Band took part in the Armistice Day and the Memorial Day parades and gave a concert in May with the Boys’ Glee Clubs to bring to a close a successful season. 88 CAMERA CLUB President GENEVIEVE CABACEIROS Vice President Secretary OLIVER WONG CLAIRE GAUTHIER Faculty Advisor MR. JOSEPH J. LAWLOR The Durfee Camera Club has added another year to its record of pro- moting beneficial extra-curricular activities. Under the guidance of energetic and capable student-officers and with the assistance of interested and cooperative members, the club promoted a varied series of events. Restricted supplies and equipment, more important war-time activities and the limited attendance of professional speakers hampered the accomplish- ments somewhat. However, the officers and members feel duly repaid in that the club's existence has been kept continuous and is offered to the future students for their interest and improvement. 89 COMMERCIAL CLUB President RITA SHEA V ke-Presid ent Se ere tary PAULA JACKSON MARY LIBERATORE T reasurer NANCY STAVROS The Commercial Club is one of the largest organizations of Durfee, numbering over ninety students. All have attained a high standard in their commercial subjects. During the past year at the business and social meetings, the members heard from many prominent business and school men. Instructive talks on the business world of tomorrow were given by the various speakers. A Speed Typing Contest was held under the club’s direction, and prizes were distributed to the winners. Motion pictures relating to commercial ac- tivities were shown at some of the meetings. The Get-Acquainted Party held in December was well attended and en- joyed. The Award Assembly held in May was the highest point in the activities. Students of high achievement in commercial subjects were given awards in shorthand, typing, Ediphone, bookkeeping, and clerical tests. The faculty advisor is Mr. George C. Hoar. 90 THE DEBATING SOCIETY President BRADFORD W. WILD VIce-Pres id en t $ ecretary DOROTHY MITCHELL DORIS PHELPS T reasurer ALAN HUTCHINSON The Durfee Debating Society was organized this year to meet the needs of students interested in discussion and debate. An active program featuring weekly discussions on matters of current interest was presented by the mem- bers of the club. In addition, speakers addressed the club during the latter part of the year. From the membership was selected the in ter scholas tic debating team which debated such nearby schools as New Bedford, Rogers, Classical and Hope. Bradford Pearson and Joyce Hawkins upheld the affirmative side of the question, Resolved, That the legal voting age be lowered to eighteen.’ Hans Picard and Bruce Wild debated the negative. In addition, to the na- tional high school subject, Bradford Wild and Norman Silk debated die negative side of the collegiate subject, Resolved, That compulsory arbitra- tion be instituted to settle labor disputes. The debating team won four out of six debates. The Debating Society pays tribute to two charter members who are now in the A. S. T. R. P.—Robert Hambidge and Joseph Connors. V 91 DURFEE DRAMATIC CLUB President WILLIAM CHEBOT Vice-President Call Girl HANS PICARD SHIRLEY YOKEN Secretary TOBY ELLISON Financial Secretary SYLVIA NADIEN Dialogue which might have been heard at Somerville, Mass., April 17, 1945. Characters . . . President of the Somerville Senior Class and a Durfee actress. P.S.S.C. Say, your winning play was grand and the actors seemed to be enjoying it heaps—you Durfee boys and gals seem to have a lot of pep. What do you do down there in Fall River? D.A........We have a very live Dramatic Club which meets every week. P.S.S.C. What do they do? Put on plays? D.A. Oh, sure. We wrote and presented four original ones this fall at a matinee. Then we gave ARSENIC AND OLD LACE in Jan uary; you know the Karloff comedy. 92 P.S.S.C. .. That’s a swell show. I saw it in the movies. Do you do any serious ones? D.A........This year we helped the Music Department stage their opera MARTHA. Many of us were in the performance as actors or the orchestra and we ushered as well as put up the scenery for the five scenes. It was a fine undertaking, everyone said. P.S.S.C....Where do you get tire money for all this scenery, etc? D.A. Oh, we sell enough tickets to our shows. Our annual vaudeville show which we call NOVELTY NITE fills the house every year. We put on 30 acts this year. P.S.S.C. Do you do anything else with your money? D.A........We send twenty-five dollars to the Servicemen's Library Fund each year, and last year we gave several albums of records to the LJ.S.O. when we played for them. P.S.S.C Oh, you give plays outside of school? D.A........Do we? The clubs and churches of the city are constantly asking us for a show. And we broadcast programs. We did one over W.S.A.R, to celebrate National Drama Week. The Thespians sponsored the program. P.S.S.C. The Thespians? What are they? People call all actors Thespians. D.A. The National Thespians is an honor society' for high school stu- dents interested in dramatics throughout the U. S. Only those who have done exceptional work in dramatic productions can belong. We have a troupe at Durfee, and at tire other school, which won at this festival, a troupe was installed by our sponsor, Miss Well- ington, who is regional director. P.S.S.C. She is the one who sat up in the balcony while you put on your show, isn't she? Your boys sure seem to know how to do things and have a grand time in the bargain. D.A. You all have given us a wonderful time here and we hope you'll come to Durfee some day. 93 THESPIANS BIDDING BUDDY GOOD-BYE THE HOUSE OF USHER wktir Bt BENTLEY KOLOPNY THE LIFE OF THE PARTY rsrrf y JUDITH KAHN CURTAIN AT EIGHT-ARSENIC AND OLD LACE HEALTH CLUB President ROGER BOULAY V ice-Pre sident THOMAS BROWN Boy Councillor RAYMOND TURGEON Secretary GLADYS COURY Girl Councillor HELEN PECKHAM The Health Club is composed of the entire sophomore class. The voting power is vested in five officers and two representatives from each sophomore home room. The purpose of the organization is to maintain the health standards of the school by encouraging the participation of the entire student body in numer- ous projects which the club sponsors each year. Among these are the annual Nutrition, Posture, Sanitation and Safety Drives and the Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign. Sanco Scout Squads are organized to inspect lockers and desks, to enforce the rules of sanitation in the cafeteria, corridors and on the stairs of the Tech- nical and Durfee Buildings and on the school grounds. Miss Angeline B. Crispo and Miss Maybe!le E. Ramsay are the faculty advisors. 95 THE HILLTOP The Durfee Hilltop inaugurated its twenty-third year with a record- breaking subscription drive. Under the faculty direction of Mr. John T. Crowley, it has enjoyed a very successful year. The school paper is published thirty weeks of the school year to give students of journalism an opportunity to practice the principles they have learned in the journalism course and to keep students informed of school ac- tivities. Dorothy Mitchell, editor-in-chief, was in charge of news. Business man- ager Harriet Lucas was head of the circulation department. Several new features were added to the paper this year. One of them was a Girls’ Sports Department headed by Mary H. Sullivan. The ’'Inquiring Re- porter” column, also a new feature, was written by Evelyn James and Joan Seifert. Bi-weekly meetings are held in Room 15 with Mr. Ambrose F. Keeley as faculty advisor. The Literary Club serves as an outlet for those students who wish to improve their style of writing with the aid of constructive criticism from the club members. This year the programs of the meetings have featured mysteries, stories with surprise endings, and other types of sShort stories, along with all sorts of poetry. A large and active membership added one more successful year to the Durfee Literary Club’s history. 97 LIBRARY AIDS ASSOCIATION President MARY L. MELIA Vice-President Seere tary JANET A. MELLOR MARY LOUISE SHEA Chairman of the Social Committee EDWARD BURNS The Durfee Library Aids Association is a body of students chosen an- nually from the three upper classes for their scholastic standing and general ability by Miss Marion E. Kernan, school librarian. Their duties begin at 8 A. M. when passes are issued by two aides until 8:15 A. M. They also receive books, deliver gray slips and assist in locating material. There are several aides on duty each period delivering passes, check- 98 ing shelves, arranging the bulletin board, checking library science papers, lo- cating pupils and taking attendance. They frequently render efficient service el sewhere. The library was very attractive during December with a very beautifully illuminated Christmas tree. A delightful Christmas party was sponsored by Miss Kernan to which the aides and friends were invited. The following students are members of the association: Samuel S. Attar Edward J, Burns Veva S. Cavaca Ralph P. Dupont Marjorie Edwards Isabel Faber Marilyn Friedlaoder Aldora Gonsalves James G. Gray Mildred E. Jackson Rachel L. Liner Mary L. Melia Amelia M. Mel nick Janet A. Mellor Dorothy E. Sullivan 99 THE ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS The first public performance for the Chorus of 1944-45 was the singing of Christmas carols in the corridors, followed by a Christmas concert for the Rotary Club. In February, the Orchestra, the Chorus, and the Glee Clubs gave a Youth Concert for the benefit of the Junior Red Cross. April brought three performances of the opera Martha” by the Chorus and Orchestra. In May, the Annual Concert of the Chorus, Orchestra, and Glee Clubs was presented. During the year, small instrumental and choral groups gave programs for numerous civic organizations and participated in radio programs. The Founders Day, the Class Day, and the Graduation programs brought to a close a very busy school year. --------------------------:--------------------- t THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY President FRANCISCO T, CABRAL V ice-Presid ent T reasurer MARY MELIA BRADFORD WILD The National Honor Society exists primarily to recognize scholastic achievement. Since those it admits have worked for membership in the society, the goal is a worthwhile one. Years ago the Greeks in their games contested for a laurel wreath, the sign of victory. It was not the wreath itself for which they strived; it was its symbolic value. Today, students in high schools strive for membership in the National Honor Society because die society symbolizes the qualities of schol- arship, service, character and leadership. 102 THE SCIENCE CLUB The Westinghouse Science Club held its first meeting in September but did not become a dub officially until December. At that time, Joseph L. Con- nors was elected president, Bradford D. Pearson, vice-president, Elaine Ritter, secretary, and Bradford Wild, treasurer. The president drew up the consti- tution which was accepted in January. When Joseph L. Connors left for the A. S. T. R. P., Bradford D. Pearson assumed the office of president and Wil- liam Chebot was elected vice president. Membership was opened to juniors in March. The purpose of the dub is to prepare pupils for the Westinghouse Science Talent Search Test, given each year to seniors throughout the country. Pictured above are members of the original group. From left to right, standing are: Bradford Wild, John Duffy, Robert Hinves, and Solomon Slob- ins. Seated are: Bradford D. Pearson, William Chebot, Elaine Ritter, Norman Silk, and Hans Picard. Other members are Francisco Cabral, Joseph L. Con- nors, and Arthur Fine. Mr. Joseph O. Carroll is faculty advisor. 103 THE SPEAKERS’ BUREAU President ROBERTA DUNLOP Secretary Attendance Taker AMELIA MELNICK ELIAS SABER Faculty Advisor MISS ELIZABETH LEONARD If you’ve wondered who the students are who have come into your home rooms to talk to you at intervals during the school year—wonder no more-— for they are members of the Speakers’ Bureau, Being the best speakers in the school, these boys and girls are called upon occasionally to inform you about just w'hat’s going on and to put you in die know about school affairs. This year the Bureau has not been called upon too often, but wre have made sure to tell you of the S, A. A. dances and other S. A. A. activities, the Dramatic Club productions, the opera Martha”, and the Red Cross Drive, 104 THE TRAFFIC SQUAD First Lieutenants RODNEY TITCOMR, DONALD HEARTH, MARVIN GREENBERG, LOUISE EAGER Second Lieutenants FRANCIS MARKOT and JANE AUSTIN The Traffic Squad, which was one of the first student organizations under the S, A. A,, has been in existence over twenty years. During the past seven- teens years. Miss E. Estelle Miles has been its faculty advisor. There has been no captain this year. About ten years ago Mr. Charles V. Carroll obtained permission from the Fall River Police Department to have No Passing signs on Rock Street, at the intersections of Cherry and Locust Streets during the time pupils pass from one building to the other. It is one of the duties of the traffic officers to see that these signs are in place. As in previous years traffic officers have been on duty in the corridors during the passing of classes. A few traffic officers have been on duty during recess periods to prevent pupils from disturbing classes which are in session. Although we have had the one-way system of traffic on the stairways in the Technical Building for several years, we have tried using some of the stair- ways for two way traffic this year. 105 WAR BOND AND STAMP CASHIERS Shortly after that fateful day, December 7, 1941, this organization, con- sisting of outstanding commercial students, was formed for the purpose of selling War Stamps and Bonds to the students of Durfee. From a small group of eight cashiers, it has doubled in size, due to the increased demand for Stamps and Bonds. This organization has participated in the Seven War Bond Drives and has handled more than a half million dollars, without losing a penny. The following are the cashiers: Marguerite Buzzell, Thelma Ellison, Theresa Fiola, Josephine Gutwienski, Helen Hastie, Paula Jackson, Mary Lib- eratore, Patricia McCarthy, Theresa McCormack, Barbara Panchley, Mildred Perry, Theresa Powers, Rita Shea, and Phyllis Shelmerdine. Faculty advisors are Mr. George C. Hoar and Miss Anne L. O’Neil. 106 ME rORlES OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON In the usual order—The senior members of the squad. The Durfe'e-Brockton game at the Boston Garden—2nd half Dator sinks a foul shot—closing minutes Durfee-N. B. Coach Luke Urban. The old ball refuses to drop in at the Boston Garden. An anxious moment in the Durfee-B rock ton game. A jump ball—Durfee-New B'edford at the Boys’ Club. CHEERLEADERS The past year has been a banner one for the cheerleaders because it gave them the honor of cheering for two teams which closed their seasons without a defeat—the football and basketball teams. Cheerleaders are recruited from the sophomore class at the end of the third term. Tryouts are held and all sophomore girls who have passing marks in all subjects are eligible. The head cheerleader is chosen for two years’ service. This year’s squad consisted of eight girls. The four junior leaders were: Clare Coogan, Pauline Donnelly, Pauline C. Francoeur and Sheila Kelly. The other four were seniors: Helen R. Machado, Lorraine Mello, Irene Ramalho and Mary H. Sullivan, head cheerleader. In schools throughout the state cheer leaders were called upon to cheer their basketball teams and so did Durfee—the first year for our school. Cheering letters are awarded to the girls at the end of the year. Miss Marie V. Sha 11.00 is faculty advisor of the group. 109 GIRLS’ NUMERAL CLUB The Girls’ Numeral Club is an organization for the benefit of the girls at Durfee who are sincerely interested in athletics and who are willing to de- vote their time after school to promote activities in which all girls in the school may participate. The club is composed of forty-five girls from the sophomore, junior and senior classes. Members are chosen chiefly on a leadership basis. In the Fall, the dub outlines a program to be presented in the gym after school and each member signs up for the activities which she desires to help conduct through- out the year. If she faithfully completes the assignment she has chosen she is awarded her class numerals in June. During the year some of the projects offered to the students were: soccer, swimming, ping-pong, volley ball, basketball, badminton, and an indoor ob- stacle course. Incorporated into the social program was a Fall party, a hay ride, a get- acquainted party for sophomores and a spring outing in the country. 110 GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM The Girls' Basketball team ended its second season with a record of three victories and one defeat. Due to transportation difficulties, the girls had to confine themselves to a limited schedule. They chalked up victories over Somerset and Dartmouth but in a return match, Somerset defeated Durfee. In June, the team will lose many of its players because most of the girls are seniors. However, next year will find many promising athletes coming into the field from the second team and other candidates. They will give their opponents stiff competition and carry on the excellent record set by the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team of 1945. The team consisted of the following girls: Row One: Left to right, Claire O’Neil, Marian Wagner, Marguerite Buz- zel, and Ruth Parker. Second row: Kay Askew, Patricia McCarthy, Captain Rfta Shea, Margaret Livesey, and Manager Marian Lincoln. Third row: Mil- dred Jackson, Victoria Ashker, Janice Tate, and Jean Fearnley. Faculty advisor. Miss Virginia W, Frost. Ill FOOTBALL Rolling up the amazing point total of 253 to the opposition's 30, the Red and Black grid machine turned in the finest record since 1903. With Fred Kozak, the flashy, triple-threat All-State back running wild, the Hill- toppers compiled a record of 9 wins and one tie—this being at the hands of the Crimson Raiders of New Bedford. This blemish on an otherwise per- fect record was more than wiped out by the sensational 53-6 rout of the Red and White on Thanksgiving Day. A second period Kozak to Billington forward gave Durfee a close 6-0 win over a stubborn East Providence team in the season’s opener at Pierce Stadium, East Providence. Durfee continued along the victory path with successive -wins over a weak Somerville Trade team and a plucky but inexperienced Rogers aggregation by convincing scores of 45-0 and 21-6. Attleboro also felt the offensive power of the crack Durfee squad, bow ing by a score of 32-0. With Kozak sidelined because of a leg injury, the Durfee juggernaut was held to a scoreless tie by a determined New Bedford team in the Columbus Day spectacle at Sargent Field. Durfee routed Taunton 26-6 for its fifth win of the season and then showed championship form in overcoming a two touchdown deficit to hand North Attleboro its only defeat of the season by a 19-12 score. The Red and Black defeated Newr Bedford Vocational 19-0 and then proved its greatness by handing Coyle its only set back of the season by an overwhelming 32-0 score. For die first time in sixteen years Durfee fans went home from the Turkey Day classic singing the praises of the Hilltoppers after their 53-6 rout of New Bedford. L 112 BASKETBALL Continuing where the football team left off, the Durfee High quintet completed the first undefeated basketball season in the school’s history. Coach Urban’s starting five, all seniors, performed brilliantly throughout the cam- paign. With Co-Captains Matte and Peterson playing stellar ball in the back- court and Kozak, Sullivan and Harrington dropping them in from all angles, the Red and Black went through a sixteen game schedule without tasting de- feat. This fine record won for the Hill toppers State recognition and an invi- tation to compete in the Headmaster s Tournament at the Boston Garden. Brockton edged the Urbanmen 43-41 in a thrilling opening round game. Additional honors were heaped on the Hill toppers when Kozak, Sullivan and Matte were chosen by rival coaches for the Bristol County All-Star Team. ’Roddy” Sullivan, Durfee’s top scorer, with Kozak close on his heels, was elected captain for the all-star aggregation. Bob” Murray and Johnny” Dator deserve credit for their fine work in the role of substitutes and particularly for their flawless exhibition against New Bedford when the Hiihoppers lost three men via the five foul route. The team was every bit as good as the record shows and would have un- doubtedly made a better showing in the Headmaster's Tournament if the boys had been accustomed to playing on a regulation sized court. Durfee should be proud of the record made by the Hilltoppers and par- ticularly of the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the season. The spirit of the Red and Black five was indomitable even in defeat 113 BASEBALL With many members of last year’s squad back, it looks like a good season for Durfee on the diamond. Seven seniors in the starting lineup should make the dub strong and powerful. Although our team dropped the opener at Cranston by a score of 15-5, it was evident that a good dub was in the making. Erratic playing was the prime cause of the failure which chalked up a defeat against ' Bill” Matte. With Art ” Ryan showing the way both on the mound and at bat Durfee handed Taunton a 5-1 setback. The team continued in the win column by de- feating New Bedford Vocational 10-6 in a slugfest; in a return game at Fall River, Keeley missed a shutout against the same team by a 3-1 victory. Taunton was the next victim in a return engagement by an 11-4 score. However, the next opponent was the strong Coyle nine which handed the Hilltoppers a 3-0 shutout. At Newport the team returned to the win column by taking the measure of Rogers 7-2. On turn successive days the athletes of 1945 continued their supremacy over New Bedford by chalking up two victories—a 5-4 one at New Bedford and a 7-0 one at Alumni Field. 114 VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club staged its annual performance of Varsity Night under the direction of Miss Elizabeth L, Leonard and Mr. John J. Harrington. The show consisted of boxing bouts, wrestling matches and sports movies. Laughs galore were supplied by the stars of football, basketball and base- ball. The highlight of the program being a Romeo and Juliet scene portrayed by those eminent dramatic stars, Joseph Nowak and Whitey” Peterson. The members are presented sweaters with the money derived from this performance. The proceeds obtained from a scrap drive, which was held in th city, also helped the club to defray other expenses. The club is comprised of athletes who have the honor and distinction of winning letters in any of the major sports. Under the capable leadership of Coach Luke Urban the season was the best in many a year both on the field and in the treasury. This banner year was dosed with an outing which featured sports pro- grams, frankfurter roast and dancing. The outing was directed smoothly by the officers: President Roger Sullivan, Vice-President Fred Kozak, Secretary John Long and Treasurer Sal Petrillo. 115 The Record Book wishes to express its thanks to all those who have have given their cooperation to make this book a success To our faculty advisors, Miss Katherine L.
