PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE To the Class of 1940: High school graduates of this year fully realize that the problems of the world directly affect them. They may be disillusioned and discouraged by such problems as the European War, international deceit and injustice, political corruption, unfair business tactics, widespread unemploy- ment and poverty, and crime waves. But they should feel that it is their duty as educated citizens to do their utmost to help solve these problems. During their high school years all of these graduates have received good basic training for citizenship and many have received specialized vocational training of an exploratory nature. Shouldn’t this early educational training provide real transfer value in helping them to do their share courageously and honestly to bring about a solution of the conditions which directly concern them, their homes, and their community? Today as never before our country needs millions of well informed citizens of good reputation and strong character to lead both small and large groups of willing workers in constructive ideals of progress; today as never before our country needs millions of manual and mental workers to perform the many tasks necessary to develop and distribute our resources. I hope that the graduates of this class of 1940 of B. M. C. Durfee High School will develop their powers to the highest degree, that they will be active and enthusiastic workers in the community, and that they will be honest, intelligent, and patriotic citizens of our country. I hope that they will enjoy happy, worthwhile, and useful lives. Principal.
