B. M. C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL :?0:| • i; A , o m : : ■ - B. M. C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS In grateful remembrance the Class of 1940 dedicates this Record Book to Mr. George F. Coyle Efficient Teacher - Wise Counsellor Faithful Friend Died—March 29, 1940 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE To the Class of 1940: High school graduates of this year fully realize that the problems of the world directly affect them. They may be disillusioned and discouraged by such problems as the European War, international deceit and injustice, political corruption, unfair business tactics, widespread unemploy- ment and poverty, and crime waves. But they should feel that it is their duty as educated citizens to do their utmost to help solve these problems. During their high school years all of these graduates have received good basic training for citizenship and many have received specialized vocational training of an exploratory nature. Shouldn’t this early educational training provide real transfer value in helping them to do their share courageously and honestly to bring about a solution of the conditions which directly concern them, their homes, and their community? Today as never before our country needs millions of well informed citizens of good reputation and strong character to lead both small and large groups of willing workers in constructive ideals of progress; today as never before our country needs millions of manual and mental workers to perform the many tasks necessary to develop and distribute our resources. I hope that the graduates of this class of 1940 of B. M. C. Durfee High School will develop their powers to the highest degree, that they will be active and enthusiastic workers in the community, and that they will be honest, intelligent, and patriotic citizens of our country. I hope that they will enjoy happy, worthwhile, and useful lives. Principal. FACULTY Charles V. Carroll, Principal Ralph M. The Pigskin Hop in November and the Officers’ Banquet in March were the outstanding social events of the year. Three matinee socials, attendance at state and sectional conventions, football rallies, an Honor Students’ Assembly, an Awards Assembly, and the addition of names of members of the graduating class to the All-A Placque were some of the many projects undertaken. On April 2, the Council sponsored two Marionette Shows for the purpose of raising funds for the transportation of delegates to the national convention of the National Association of Student Officers scheduled for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the first week of July, during which the Durfee Delegation took an active part in the program. On April 22, the Student Council, for the first time in several years, was host to the delegates of the Southeastern Branch of the Associated Body of Student Councils of Massachusetts High Schools. The S.A.A. Council for 1939-1940: Americo Almeida, Jr., president; William A. Carroll, vice president; Gladys Yates, secretary; Grace Terry, Robert A. Macfarlane, Malcolm G. Kispert, Bayless A. Manning, Ruth Riley, Kenneth Leigh, Dorothy Sisson. Henry Chin and Lillian Duffy. The faculty advisors were Miss Alice G. Langford, Mr. James F. Conlin and Miss Ann L. O’Neil, Treasurer. HOME ROOM DIRECTORS When the home rooms have been organized at the beginning of the school year, the pupils of each room elect a boy and a girl to represent them in the Home Room Directors5 Organization, a large and busy group. Meetings are called in school time, at which duties in addition to those carried on in the home room are outlined. The directors assist with the distribution of Thanksgiving baskets, the sale of pencils for the Anti- tuberculosis Society and of operetta tickets, and with all activities where individual contact with the pupils is desired. This year the S.A.A. has inaugurated a new plan for the directors. One of the two from each room has been chosen to sit in as a member of a House of Representatives or lower body of the S.A.A. Every month after school a meeting is held at which matters of general school interest are discussed and special talks given by several students. These subjects are then carried back to the home rooms with the hope that all students will cooperate in improving the spirit and the conduct of the school. The officers are Malcolm Kispert, president, and Marilyn Hadley, vice president-secretary. The directors believe that the organization is f u n c t i o n i n g e f f ic i e n tly, THE BAND The B. M. C. Durfee Band, under the leadership of Mr. William Allinson, has played an important part in various school activities. Everyone of the fifty band members has shown his enthusiasm and school spirit in stirring band music and lusty cheering. Under the supervision of Mr. Ambrose Keeley, the band has gone on the field with confidence and has performed intricate movements behind the twirling baton of Drum Major Louise Cottell, At every football game the band and the drum majors have performed for the crowd. In the Fall River Armistice Day parade the Durfee Band provided music for the John Foster Stafford Post of the American Legion in the morning, and after the parade they performed at the Durfee-Coyle foot- ball game. The band also played at two benefit basketball games held at the Casino. This group does its utmost to arouse a strong school spirit and its members have shown themselves to be able musicians. The president of the band is John Kinane; the secretary, Robert Baker; the band master, Alban Vizina; and the custodian, Wendell Boyce. CAMERA CLUB The Durfee Camera Club was organized in 1938 and has as its aim the promotion of an interesting and educational leisure time hobby. Its membership is open to all students at Durfee who are interested in photography. The club has grown rapidly and is increasing its scope each year. Formal and informal discussions and lectures have been given by local photography experts, and student instructors have carried on practical demonstrations in the club’s darkroom. Exhibitions and competi- tive displays as well as social events have been included in the club’s activities. Emblems signifying membership in the Camera Club are worn by members in good standing. It is the first club to extend honorary member- ship to the principal and vice-principals. The officers are Donald Burke, president; Cecile Larchevesque, vice president; Katherine Foristel, secretary, and Ruth Oddie, treasurer. The faculty advisor is Joseph J. Lawlor. The Commercial Club is one of the largest organizations in Durfee with a membership of 325 Commercial seniors. During the past year we have had business and social meetings. At our business meetings we heard from several prominent business people; demonstrations were given and motion pictures were shown. All subjects dealt with business and our association with the world of commerce. Early in the year the club sponsored a Get Together Party to acquaint the members with one another. A dance for members and their friends was held later in the school year. Fifty dollars was donated to fill Christmas baskets for the families of needy club members. As usual the annual picnic concluded the year’s activities. It was a huge success and made an enjoyable day which will last in the memory of all members. Miss Isabelle E. O’Neil is the faculty advisor. DEBATING The Durfee debaters enjoyed another successful season although the outstanding successes of other years were not achieved. All extra-National Forensic League competition was defeated with ease; those defeated included the New Bedford affirmative and negative, the La Salle Academy affirmative, and the Brown University freshman negative. National Forensic League debating results at the district tournament were indecisive because Coach William F. Kaylor protested the ordered forfeiture of two debates. The debaters and the speakers, however, won three speaking championships and the tournament on a point total basis. The Durfee speakers won their second tournament when they easily outscored twenty-six Massachusetts schools to win the State N. F. L. Speech Tournament held at Concord. The Balfour Trophy was presented to the coach in virtue of the victory. Ralph Kolodny and Bayless Manning won individual championships in original oratory and extempore speaking respectively. The debating team won fourth place and every event saw a Durfee representative finishing among the first four places. The Durfee debaters showed to best advantage at the New England N. F. L. Speech Tournament which was held at Boston University. They were deadlocked with the Portland, Maine, representatives after the final tabulation. Their victory brought them a silver loving cup from the Boston University authorities. Again Durfee speakers won the tournament championship and were presented the Balfour Trophy symbolic of their victory. In all, the Durfee speakers had a satisfactory year, capturing five speaking championships, tying for first place in the N. E. N. F. L. debate, winning every tournament on a point total basis, and bringing three additional trophies to the school. THE DRAMATIC CLUB The curtain has fallen on the last act for the year 1939-40, and now that the properties, scenery, and costumes have been stored away, let's lock back on the accomplishments of the year. The first business of the club was to increase its membership by approximately eighty new members from the junior and senior classes. A Hallowe’en Party was then held at which all old and new members became acquainted. The dramatic season began with the showing of four original one act plays by club members. Following this successful venture came the “Curtain at Eight ’ performance of three one act plays: John M. Synge’s dramatic classic, “Riders to the Sea; “What Men Live By, a colorful and effective play with a religious theme; and “Wedding Present, a highly amusing comedy. The annual Novelty Night program was presented at the end of March, and, as usual, talent and good entertainment combined to make the evening a success. A week later, the club traveled to the New England Drama Festival in Everett, where, with the presentation of “Riders to the Sea, the players gave an excellent account of themselves. Under the able guidance of Miss Barbara Wellington and Miss Elizabeth Leonard, the Dramatic Club has brought another successful season to a close. The officers are Edwin Jaffe, president; Henry Packer, vice president; and Maria Monte, secretary. RIDERS OF THE SEA MINUET MEN ME LIE RDRAM ME R ELECTRICAL CLUB Preside ii t Vice President Edward Morgan Edward Arsnow Secretary Bertrand Boucher Treasurer John J. Burke The Durfee Electrical Club under the guidance of President Edward Morgan, assisted by the faculty advisors, Mr. Myron T. Ashley and Mr. Henry Shea, has completed another year. The club was organized for the main purpose of creating greater interest in things electrical as well as providing practical information with the cooperation of leaders in the electrical field. Meetings are held every other Wednesday, at which time the club visits places of interest or listens to a speaker from some branch of electrical work. Places we have visited include the New England Telephone Exchange, the Hartwell Street Sub-Station, the Fall River Water Works, and the Firestone Rubber and Latex Company. FLYING SQUADRON The Durfee Flying Squadron had its inception in January, 1940, when a group of students led by Leopold Thibault and Joseph Neilan petitioned Principal Carroll for permission to establish an aviation club. When permission was given by Mr. Carroll, the club got off to a “flying” start. The purpose of the club is to teach the fundamentals of aviation and to bring students into closer contact with others who are interested in this field. A program for the year was arranged at the end of the first meeting, when the B. M. C. Durfee High School added one more club to its extra- curricular activities. The club meets once a week and the members are given lectures or shown motion pictures dealing with aviation, meteorology or navigation. This year’s program leads to an examination, the successful passers of which receive a pair of metal wings to show that they have completed one year and are proficient in the primary stages of their chosen hobby. On June 8 of this year came the crowning event when all the members were given an airplane flight at one of New England’s leading airports. This flight terminated the first year of the Flying Squadron. The officers are Joseph Neilan, Squadron Commander; Leopold Thibault, Squadron Captain; Erving Bowker, Jr., “A” Flight Leader- Librarian; Raymond Hall “B” Flight Leader-Secretary; Francis Scott, “C” Flight Leader-Treasurer; Ernest Saab, “D” Flight Leader-Sergeant at Arms. Mr. Edward B. Downs is faculty advisor. bmmbmbm FORUM President Peggy K. Chytilo Vice President Beverly Kerness Sergeant-a t-arms Russell Remick Secretary Irene Gagne Faculty Advisor Berton E. Cook We are the extroverts. Contrary to the introverts who go off into corners and read books, we speak our minds. Consequently, the Durfee Forum promotes public speaking and debating. From this organization, members are chosen for the Durfee Varsity Debating Team as well as for the local chapter of the National Forensic League. In final contests of this League, Durfee has been outstanding. Meetings, held bi-weekly, are carried on to provide an opportunity for interchanging ideas in a parliamentary fashion, for debates, and for round table discussions of current affairs. Oratorical contests and mock trials are also held. Speakers who are recognized in their special fields are invited to give talks, after which an open forum is conducted. The year's program is concluded with a banquet. THE HILLTOP With the final issue of 1940, the Durfee Hilltop has completed eighteen years of publication. This paper, published by the pupils of the journalism classes, is a complete record of school occurrences. It is also the best means of publicity which the school affords both for student organizations and for business men who advertise in its columns. The Hilltop gives pupils who are interested in journalism an oppor- tunity to put into actual practice the theory taught in journalism classes. The thirty weeks of continuous writing for print give valuable experience to those who intend to pursue journalistic careers . The able staff includes Natalie Course, Editor-in Chief; Adele Smith, Business Manager; John Isherwood, News Editor; Pauline Crapo, Social Editor; Louise Gifford and Edith Berman, Feature Editors; Elizabeth Greene and Marguerite Lavoie, Exchange Editors; Paul Ferguson, Humor Editor; Lois Clarkson and Janice Fitzpatrick, Circulation Managers; Pauline Browne, Assistant Business Manager; Jean Bellenoit, Thomas McGuire, and Henry Shelley, Sports Editors. The faculty director is John T. Crowley. Remain the school librarian, is one of the most important of the school organizations. It is the only organization in the school composed of students from the three upper classes, chosen because of their scholastic standing, depend- ability, cooperation, and general helpfulness. The duties of these aids are numerous and varied. At least four pupils are on duty before school issuing passes, receiving books, carrying messages, and assisting in locating material. Aids are on duty every period to match passes and carry them to the various study halls, to distribute material, to locate pupils, to keep their assigned shelves in order according to the Dewey Decimal System, and to check papers and attendance of Library Science classes. Library Aids are often called upon for other tasks and render efficient service. Monthly dues defray the association's share of expense in the Record Book. The entertainment committee arranges an annual outing in June. LITERARY CLUB The Literary Club entered upon its sixth year with a roster of some forty-five prospective members. As the year's work proceeded, some of these found that their real interests lay elsewhere, but more than half attended meetings faithfully and contributed sufficient material to earn the rating of active member. Under the leadership of President Ann Burns, the members planned the bi-weekly meetings to allow for varied contributions in both prose and verse, with special emphasis this year upon the informal essay, the one act play, and radio scripts. Two meetings were given to the discussion of versification and criticism of original lyrics. At least one short story was offered at each meeting, the efforts in this field being directed chiefly toward the plot story. Throughout the year the level of student criticism was uniformly high, and the entertaining reports of Secretary Roderick proved well suited to the spirit of a club which is concerned with no business but writing and criticism, and which practically ignores the ritual of parliamentary procedure. The officers are Ann Burns, president; Nena Kondos, vice president; Rudolph Roderick, Secretary. The faculty advisor is Ambrose F. Keeley. Motion Picture Appreciation Club The Motion Picture Appreciation Group at Durfee was organized in 1938 and was open to juniors only. Last year, after its recognition by the S.A.A., the membership was extended to include both juniors and seniors. This organization is just what its name implies: a group that meets solely for the purpose of discussing and analyzing moving pictures so that their value may be better appreciated. It is necessarily a small group because it does not sponsor any social affairs, rather contenting itself with cultural pursuits. Miss Helena H. Withrow, faculty advisor, contributes much to the group because of her deep interest in moving pictures and her ability to discuss them with the members. The officers of the Motion Picture Appreciation Group for 1939-40 are: Donald Pickup, president; Rosalind Rubinstein, vice president; Fredda Lipshitch, secretary; Ann Burns and Natalie Gourse, program chairmen; Paul Ferguson, vice president, 1938-39. ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS The Orchestra and the Chorus, numbering sixty-two and sixty students, respectively, enjoyed a busy year under the direction of Miss Helen L. Ladd. In December, the orchestra cooperated with the Dramatic Club in the presentation of three one act plays. As is customary during the Christmas season, the Chorus entertained the student body with carol singing. This group also sang for the Rotary Chib and took part in the public broadcasts of carols from City Hall. In February, the Orchestra and the Chorus, assisted by Miss Barbara Wellington and the Dramatic Club, staged the popular Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta, “The Mikado.” Members of both groups participated in the Massachusetts Music Festival at Boston in March. The annual concert by the Orchestra and the Chorus was presented in May. In preparation for this event, Miss Ladd was assisted by Miss Rita Ford. Early in May, these clubs participated in the Massachusetts State Festival at Wellesley where the Orchestra received an honor rating. In an attempt to raise funds for the purchase of instruments, the music organizations conducted a “mile of pennies” campaign at the school. Their efforts were successful. In June, the Chorus sang at the Founder’s Day Exercises in the Durfee Auditorium. The entire orchestra assisted the seniors in their celebration of Class Day and Commencement. A party at the Country Club climaxed an enjoyable year. V? NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY President Bayless Manning Vice President Secretary Egilda DeAmicis Jean Hellens The membership of the National Honor Society, a purely honorary organization, is chosen from the highest ranking students of the senior and the junior classes. The pupils are marked on four traits: character, service, leadership, scholarship and from the group receiving the highest grades, a faculty committee elects the members. The induction ceremony held in the spring is most impressive in its program, emphasizing the four basic attributes on which its members are chosen. Officers are then elected. These officers hold at least one meeting in preparation for the induction exercises of the year. SANCO GUIDES It is highly essential that a school cafeteria be kept clean and sanitary. When one considers that over three thousand pupils use the Durfee cafeterias daily, one easily sees that sanitation and clean-up work are very important. This work at Durfee is directed by competent Sanco guides who are selected for their earnestness and willingness to help their school. Under the supervision of Miss Sylvia Seagrave, faculty advisor, the following girls direct the sanitation work in the girls' cafeteria: Adelia Allard, Natalie Briggs, Mary Carvalho, Jeanette Bellenoit, Muriel Davis, Olive Couto, Anna Costa, Helen Cates, Grace Kerrigan. The boys who do the same work in the boys' cafeteria under the super- vision of Mr. John J. Harrington, faculty advisor, are John Barlow Charles Hodgson, Raymond Morin, Stanley Sherlog, Anthony Felkowski, Camille Capone, Joseph Silvia, Calvin Warren, William Langfield, Charles Wojtowicz, William Worsley. TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad, which was the first of the student government organizations in this school, has been in existence over fifteen years. During the past twelve years it has been under the supervision of Miss E. Estelle Miles. For several years we have had a necessary, one-way system of traffic on stairways. About six years ago Mr. Carroll obtained permission from the Police Department to have “No Passing” signs on Rock Street to prevent auto- mobiles using the block between Locust and Cherry Streets during the time pupils are passing from one building to the other. Since then traffic officers have carried these signs to the two intersections at each passing period. A few years ago the Young Drivers’ Association received permission from the Police Department to have these signs placed before school, during the lunch periods, and after school. This work has been put under the supervision of the Traffic Squad. As in previous years, traffic officers have been on duty in the corridors during recess periods to prevent pupils from disturbing classes which are in session. The Commanding Officers of the Traffic Squad include: Co-Captains— Evelyn Kiteck and Charles Eager; First Lieutenants—Clinton Stanley, George Leigh, Ernest Saab, and Raymond McConnell; Second Lieutenants— Edward Bento, Abraham Katzen, and Reinaldo Antunes; Secretary—Hope Nnrin. YOUNG DRIVERS’ ASSOCIATION The Young’ Drivers' Association was organized in February, 1938. The purpose of the club is to promote safe driving among the students of Durfee and to cooperate with other agencies in teaching lessons of highway safety. Meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of the month from October through May. Among the interesting speakers who addressed the club this year were Mr. Earl Lewis of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, who spoke on “The Need For Safety Among Young Drivers” and Mr. Howard D. Hargraves, a local automobile expert, who discussed “Improvements in Automobile Construction Which Aid Safe Driving.” Continuing its practice of previous years, the club again supplied cars and drivers for the distribution of the Health Club's Thanksgiving baskets to the needy of the city. The officers are Jean Durfee, president; Pauline Crapo, vice president; Richard Superior, secretary. The faculty advisor is John V. Donnelly. Y ' Autographs X ATH LETICS CHEERLEADERS Each year several girls are chosen by Miss Mary F. McCarthy and Mr. Ambrose F. Keeley to lead the cheering of the student body at the football games. From those appointed, one, who has been a leader for two years, is chosen head cheerleader. Her duty is to instruct the girls and to lead their performance on the field. There are no scholastic qualifications. Practice is held every Friday during the season. Whether to encourage to victory, to hearten in defeat or to praise for triumph, the cheering squad this year has played a conspicuous and sportsmanlike part at all the football games and “pep-rallies.” For their faithful work, insignias were awarded to the following Seniors—Mary E. Martin, head cheerleader, Virginia Draddy, Margaret Stinziano, Norma Cleaves, Jeanette Valcourt. Juniors—Lucy Dubanevieh, Mary Malone. Mascot—Rose-Marie Langton. Many thanks to the football fans for their hearty support during the past season. GIRLS’ NUMERAL CLUB President Mary Downey Vice President-Treasurer Secretary Mary Malone Alice Sullivan The Girls’ Numeral Club was organized in 1936 under the direction of Miss Mary F. McCarthy. The purpose of the club is to create an interest in girls’ athletics and to organize an extra-curricular sports program for the benefit of all girls. Membership is restricted to sophomore, junior, or senior girls who have earned their numerals in any one of the following sports: volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball, track. The club holds its meetings on the first Thursday of each month. The club’s activities of 1939-40 have included a Christmas party, a roller skating party, a May basket party, hikes, and other social affairs. Many members won awards in the annual tennis tournament and a large number assisted in the Physical Education Exhibition in the Technical auditorium, May 28, The faculty advisor is Miss Esther Yamins. FOOTBALL The football team inaugurated its 1939 season with a floodlight game, the first in Durfee’s history. The team was coached by Mr. Stephen Nawrocki and captained by Charles Carey, James McGuire was the manager. Several members of the Durfee team were picked on the all- Bristol County team or received honorable mention on it, “Charlie” Carey completed his fourth year of football by ranking high among the Bristol County backs. Two other players picked from Durfee for the all-county team were “Bill” Fitzgerald, guard, and John Barlow, tackle. Probably no other team in the county could boast of a kicker with the ability of “Ray” Burns, or the accurate passing of “Pete” Coury. Other seniors on the squad who did highly commendable work were: “Don” Oakley and Paul Gaffney, backs; John Mahon and “Tom” Marum, ends; and “Bill” Condon and “Ed” Jackson, guards. “Bill” Fitzgerald was voted the most valuable linesman; “Charlie” Carey the most valuable back, while Walter Jata received the award as the most improved player. The team won praise from its followers for the fine sportsmanship that it displayed during the season and the Durfee fans admired the squad for the fighting qualities that it displayed in all its games. Third Row— Mgr, Walsh, Rooney, 'Eaton, White, P. Murphy, Levitre, Carey, Ass’t. Mgr Deplitch. Second Row-—Ouellette, McDermott., Patten, Lipshitz, Amore, Cripps, Co-Capt. McCarthy, Coach J. R, Hathaway. First Row—Canole, Winslow, Silva, Harmon, H. Murphy, Co-Capt. Fidalgo, Kret, Dunn. BASEBALL The 1940 Durfee baseball team at this time appears to be a capable and aggressive outfit. The team, of course, will suffer some defeats because of the inexperience of most of its members. Coach Joseph R. Hathaway had only three letter men returning from last year's nine. They are Co-Captains Manuel Fidalgo and Janies McCarthy, and the club’s most able pitcher, Roland Ouellette. The team has defeated Coyle and N. B. Vocational and has lost close games to Cranston and Taunton. Eight more games are to be played. This season marks the return of Brockton and the addition of Cranston to the schedule. The team lines up as follows: Levitre, c; Ouellette, Dunn, Silva, p; Fidalgo, lb; White, 2b; H. Murphy, ss; Harmon, 3b; McCarthy, If; Winslow, cf; Amore, rf. Utility Infielders-—Kret, Lipshitz, Cripps. Utility Outfielders—P, Murphy, Canole, Rooney, Substitute Pitchers—Eaton, Patten, McDermott. BASKETBALL The 1940 basketball team completed a successful season by competing' as a finalist in the Principals’ Tournament. This post-season tourney was held in New Bedford and was open to any team in Bristol County. The Durfee team was defeated in the finals by Coyle High of Taunton. In a charity benefit fund game, Durfee defeated the City League basketball champions, the Libertys. The Hilltoppers also defeated Durfee Textile in a benefit game. The team was captained by “Bill” McCarthy and coached by Mr. Stephen Nawrocki. Captain McCarthy was the team’s high scorer. He also held a high position in county scoring and was chosen all-county forward at the end of the season. Although the team consisted mainly of under- graduates, the seniors, “Russ” Harmon and “Bill” McCarthy, played an important part in the season’s campaign. Other varsity players were James Manning, John Matte, “Al” Nichols, “Ray” Shovelton, “Ted” Devitt, “Norm” Rivard, “Ed” Kret, and “Art” Rooney. “Ed” Jackson was manager. Captain William McCarthy, “Ted” Devitt, and “Ed” Kret were chosen by the sports writers of Bristol County as members of the All-Bristol County Team. TENNIS Having opened its season with a 5 to 4 victory over De La Salle Academy, for six years Rhode Island champions, the 1940 Durfee Tennis Team got away to a splendid start. There are to be five out of town matches and five at home. These, together with regular practice sessions, promise to keep the squad busy until graduation. The opponents for the season are New Bedford High, Attleboro High, Hope High, New Bedford Textile, and De La Salle Academy. There may also be matches with Rogers High and Cranston High. Led by Captain John Rockett and coached by Mr. Ambrose F. Keeley, the netmen hope to point to an undefeated season. Other members of the Class of 1940 who will represent Durfee on the clay courts are lettermen Andrew Schofield, Jean Bellenoit, Henry Packer, and Robert Feinberg, John Locke, and Raymond Morin. The team manager is James M. Sullivan. TRACK The Track Team, coached by Mr. Andrew Duffy, held two interclass meets and one interscholastic meet with New Bedford High. The team was led by Clifford Depin and Thomas Dunlea, co-captains, and was managed by Edward Dean, The following events made up the program of the meets: the one hundred yard and the two hundred and twenty yard dashes, the four hundred and forty yard and the eight hundred and eighty yard runs, the relay, the pole vault, the broad jump, the high jump, the discus, and the javelin. The seniors won the first interclass meet but the juniors came back to win the second. The senior class was well represented on the team by the following members: “Tom” Dunlea, discus; “Cliff” Depin, javelin; Chester Hilton, broad jump; James Mackie and “Del” Thurston, pole vault; John Barks, high jump; James Tierney, eight-eighty yard run; John Curry, four-forty yard run; “Ray” DePaola, Fred Kiley, and Ervin Ginsberg, the dashes. VARSITY CLUB The Durfee Varsity Club is an organization composed of all those who have earned their varsity “D” in any sport. The club this year held a Sports Nite at which funds were raised to buy sweaters. The show was both a social and a financial success. Boxing and wrestling bouts were put on by the club members and volunteers from the student body. The affair was handled by a committee, the personnel of which was Paul Gaffney, “Ray” Burns, John Barlow, Fred Kiley, and John Rockett. The seconds, the referees, the judges, and all other officials were members of the club. The officers are Harold Say ward, president; William Fitzgerald, vice president; Paul Gaffney, business manager. The faculty advisor is Mr. Stephen Nawrocki.
