Ladd the Durfee orchestra of 65 pieces and the Durfee Chorus of 90 VOICCS carrled out a program of lnterest and importance to thc cnty as well 18 the school lollowmg the pohcy of the last few years the chorus went through the corridors of both burldmgs smgrng Chnstmas Carols on the last school day before Chrlstmas The Chorus was muted to srng these Carols at the Rotary Club and the next mght they smg at the Clty Hall In Iebruary the Chorus and Orchestra combmed and presented the annual Gnlbert md Sullrx an Operettt There were two casts that presented the operetta Patwrzre and both were enjoyed by the splendld audxence In Mrrch twelve chorrsters and seven members of the orchestra went to Boston to srng and play at the New England Muslc Festnval Concert whrch was held IU Symphony Hlll Durfee students won hjgh ratmgs rn both chorus and orchestra The orchestra entertuned at the Dramatlc Clubs three one act plays and at the Massachusetts Draml Iestrval held by the Dramatic Club In Aprrl the annual concert was presented by the orchestra and chorus Sororsts from both groups were enjoyed as well as the groups themselves 'Ihe Stltc Musxc Iestnval whrch was held rn Iall Rner last year was held m Belmont durmg the month of May The orchestra and chorus attended and received a hlgh rating from the judges Graduatron would not be complete vuthout the orchestra The orchestra wnll play at Class Day lounders Day and Commencement Exercnses It adds that certam thmg that seems to malce a program mean somethrng to a graduate The orchestra and chorus have helped the school and have been a source of prrde to the crty of Fall Rwer . . H 1 1 a TENNIS TEAM The Durfee Tennis I'eam of i958 completed an impressive season with a total of tsyelye x ins and tvro losses the Rhode Island state championship De La Salle Academy team mth unior Davis Cup player Don Martin being the only squad to eyidence any superiority An examination of the records shows that two members of the Class of 1939 were largely responsible for much of Durfee s success on the courts One of the two Paul Thomas Hinchey was elected captain at the close of the season and it the time this book goes to press is leading his 1939 squad in an effort to sur pass last years accomplishments 'Ihe other Russell Kncen is equally enthusiastic an hopes at least to duplicate his splendid performance of last year in both singles an doubles The only other member of the Class of 1959 chosen for the tennis squad this year is Alan Lubinslty who will be rep esenting the school on the clay surface for the first time O her members of the squad have been chosen from the large number of This year s team is scheduled to play at least twelve matches Contests on a home and home basis have already been arranged with Bristol High New Bedford High Fairhaven High De La Salle Academy Attleboro High and New Bedford Textile There is every indication that whether or not Durfee manages to emerge victor in most of the matches the visitor to the Alumni Iield courts or the avid follower of the team on its out of town trips will see plenty of good tennis TRACK The track team coached by Mr Andrew Duffy of the faculty had a schedule of four track meets tyyo interclass meets and two outside meets one with New Bedford and one mth New Bedford Vocational In the interclass meets the Seniors had the stronger team with the Sophomores a close second The running events this year were the one hundred yard and the two hundred twenty yard dashes four hundred forty yards and eight hundred and eighty yard runs The field eyents vrere the high jump pole vault broad jump discus shot put and the yavelin throw Outstanding among the Seniors were Manager George A Dawson Fernand Lemay Harry Copley Sheldon Davis Norman Paradis William Riegel William Waters and Thomas Duffy V V ' 7 .
