'ZW 542 IX FIRIID ZFIGGDCDRYI Arnd Hagedorn, from Helmstedt, Gere many, was a welcome addition to our 1978- 79 student body, While participating in basketball, track, student council, Close- up, and National Honor Society, Arnd was also kept busy with his classes, comment- ing that government was his favorite sub- ject. When asked how Durant High contrasts with his school in Germany, he said that the athletic program is stronger here and taken more seriously and that there seems to be a better relationship between stu- dents and teachers at our school. Arnd has to attend high school for three years when he returns to Germany and then' plans to attend college although he is not sure what his major will be. Arnd's final comment: All the people were so friendly and nice and made it so easy for me in school. I would like to thank everybody in the school for the way they treated me throughout the year. We have been very proud to include Arnd as part of DHS and wish him the best. 70 ? Q. COACH'S COMMENT In our second year of competitive volleyball and using newly purchased equipment, the varsity participated in tvvo tri- angular meets, one invitational tournament, and eight dual matfhes, For the first year, Durant entered District Competi- tion pitted against a tough Davenport West team and fifth ranked Bettendorf to finish off a busy season. The team will lose its varsity players this year, making next a rebuilding experience for the Durant Volleyball team. COACI-VS COMMENT The 1978 edition of the Durant Football Wildcats was a group of young men who demonstrated throughout the season all the positive aspects of athletics in general and football in particular. They worked hard and overcame some crippling injuries early in the season to wind up 3,4 in the conference and 4-5 overall. They showed a lot of heart and a great deal of determination in winning four of their last six games. A lesser group of individuals would not have performed as this team did in their last game of the year when they traveled to Olin and upset that previously unde- feated and highly-ranked football squad. Although we fell short of some of the high goals we set before the season started, l would have to consider the season a success. It was gratifying for me to watch these gentlemen mature and work as a team toward improving themselves in a way that would make them better football players and better people. I thank my assistants for their invaluable contributions and the people of Durant for their support throughout the season, Finally, I thank the members of this squad for their enthusiastic approach to football and to life in general. It was a pleasure working with you. Coach Casebolt 333232 35222322 5333332525 3 Ei 5 gg iggig A QQEA 3532 52? COACH'S COMMENTS The 197879 Durant Wildkittens posted a fine 14-6 season record and finished third in f the eastern lowa Hawkeye Conference with a 10,4 record. The team started slowly but I came on strong as the season progressed to win 13 of their last 16 ball games, including 10 in a row at one stage. Some of the highlights of the season would include upset victories over Clear Creek and West Branch and avenging early season losses to both Mid Prairie and Solon by scrubbing I , them at Durant. But these fine young gentlemen cannot look back on ihis season as one of frustration but on a year of hard work, dedication and extreme pride in accomplishing the important goals of life: building character, noral principles, and a willingness to work together to do the best possible job, I -alute our seniors for their leadership and sacrifices. I encourage our underclass- inen to follow these young men's examples and challenge them to work toward successful and rewarding experience in the coming years. We had close to thirty girls, all of them fine young ladies, that competed in the various workouts, track meets, and rain dances this past spring. They broke nine school records and brought home three trophies for the school and numerous medals and ribbons for their own collections. It was a great season for the team and a yery enjoyable one for me as their coach. I hope that the program continues to grow and the girls continue to gain the recognition they deserye for the time and energy they put in. He hit .490 and had a 13-5 pitching record. jon was also selected to play in the Annual All-Star Game and collected 3 hits in the All-Star Game. jeff Ralfs was honorable mention All-State, All-District 1st team and 2nd team All-Conference with a .374 average.
