Ke ith Hogan 'I f x X i Class Trip On the morning of May 17, 1957 the seniors and Miss DeHart and Mr. Smith left Durant on the bus to Chicago. Our first stop was at the airport where we spent several minutes watching the planes. Most of the afternoon was spent at the Amusement Park. At night we went to Cinerama. We arrived home about 2:30 tired but full of happy mem- ories. Award Night Award night was held May 22, 1957 in the high school gym. The Senior Band played several selections to start the program. Pat Bockwoldt, Student Council President, was Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Aschenbrenner and Mrs. Harding presented Dramatic Certificates to Violet King, Pat Meinert, Jerry Moeller, Larry Makoben, Lynn Lahl, Carol Petersen, Kathlene Krebs, Judy Deckmann, Eldina Bortleson, Lucille Olderog, Donna Mordhorst and Rolena Klahn for their parts in the Junior Class Play and One-Act Play. The Departmental Awards were then presented as follows: Homemaking-Virginette Steffeng Mathematics -Joyce Petersen, Science -Jerris Moellerg Agriculture-Karl Timmg Social Science-Karen Meierg Commercial-Lois Matzeng Speech-Janet Moel- lerp English-Rolena Klahng Dramatics-Judy Denkmann, Instrumental Music-Karen Mei- erg Vocal Music-Kathlene Krebs. Mr. Aschenbrenner presented Speech letters and Na- tional Forensic League awards. The Seniors then sang their class song to the tune of Love Me Tender. Mr. Matteson and Mr. Erwin presented the awards in Instrumental and Vocal music. Larry Makoben read the Class Prophecy. Max Werling presented Eldina Bortleson with the Cedar County Bar Association Citizenship Award. Mr. Bowen presented Attendance Awards to Robert Thoene, Loren Cole, Marilyn Davis, Judy Feldhahn, Lavem Fellner, Fay Hogan, Janet Moeller, Sylvia Stoltenberg and Dorethy Waack. American Legion Awards were presented by Harlan Bland to Kathlene Krebs, Lloyd Ralfs, Eldina Bortleson and Ronnie Alpen. The new members inducted into the Quill and Scroll Club were Violet King, Gerald Schlapkohl, Janet Moeller, Deanna Riessen, and Bill Lilienthal. Mr. Brett presented Leon Frick with the DeKalb Award. Three new members were installed into the National Honor Society. They were Lecia Weih. Deanna Riessen and Gerald Schlapkohl. Mr. Smith then presented Silver and Gold D's to those with a high scholastic aver- age.
