It seems strange coming back 20 years after graduation. Working at Durand State Bank sure did pay off. I've moved from there, to a bank auditors position in Atlanta, Georgia. It really is exciting work. I still get homesick at times, so I felt it was time to pay a visit back to the town of Durand. As I arrived in Durand, I saw a huge sign that read llGrand Opening of Mercer 81 Mercer CM-SLMI Grocery. It had changed hands and was being run by Ted and Jaime Mercer, the former JAIME ALBERSTETT. Then, in looking further, I saw good old Durand State Bank. As I walked in, there was news the bank had just been robbed! CHRIS PALMER, bank president, seemed a little worried until she was confronted by two policewomen, POLLY DOUGLAS and DEBBIE LONG. They were being escorted by police ofhcers MARK BABCOCK, BILL CAMERON, and TED CU LVER. It seems that George Seikert and Roger Sum- mers were too old to keep up with the young kids. The officers told us they had captured the crooks, but one had been killed in the process. They said Winnebago County Coroner, DENNIS MCCORKLE, had pronounced the victim dead at the scene. I was surprised to see Dennis had followed so close in his father's footsteps. Since Chris is such a prominent person in the community, she asked me if I would like to stay with her while I was visiting. I accepted her invitation readily. She suggested that while I was here we should go back and visit the school. She said we could go Friday night when there was a ball game, but first she was going to give me a tour of the town and fill me in on all the class mates and what they are doing now. The first stop we made was the mayor's ofhce, and who to my surprise was the new mayor but SARAH VORMEZEELE. She said she really enjoyed her work. We also ran into DAN WAISNER and DON ZWIGER. They have teamed together to run the sewer and water system. While chatting with Dan, Don heard a terrible roar overhead. I looked up and saw one of the biggest planes I'd ever seen before. Chris said MITCH WINDER had opened up a Trans-Atlantic Airport where MCCartney's used to be. He files all the planes himself, but admits he couldn't do it without the aid of TERESA ROGERS. It turns out she is the trafhc controller at the airport. Traveling on I saw a brand new solar swimming pool in center street park. It was designed and built by DAVID PROSISE and LESTER WISE. They told me that they never could have done it without the help of TINA SCHMERSE. She had made all sorts of runs with her Ken- worth semi-truck. I also found out that CHERI ZOLLAR is the head swim coach, and very qualified. It seems the summer after we graduated, she went on to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Pretty good since she used to be afraid of drowning in the shower. In looking on the other side of the park I saw a sign that read HDENISE KOGLIN Attorney at Law Denise always was good at putting up an argument. Durand is in good hands having her as their representative in court. I also asked Chris if anyone was running the bowling alley. She said JAN NA KERLEY had sold it and moved to Minnesota. She is a pho- tographer for National Geographic Magazine. BRIAN BLOMQUIST had also moved there and he is a forest ranger. Iasked Chris if anyone else had moved out of state. She said SUE BRYAN, JEAN BARAN and LORI FOSLER had opened an animal farm in Texas. It seemed Chris and I had come a long way, so we decided to stop in the Village Inn for a drink. As we walked in, who do I see behind the bar but BILL LONG. It seems that he not only owns the Village Inn, but the Farmer's Tap, too. JAMIE LERWICK is head waitress and gets excellent tips because of her good natured way with people. While talking to Bill and Jamie, I noticed there was a really good radio station oh. Bill said the radio station was WOOF radio being broadcast right in the heart of Durand. And who was the disc jockey but BEV KRENEK. Chris mentioned Bev also had a 31 bestselling novel out called llEverything you wanted to know about being a D.J., but were afraid to ask. We left the Village Inn and headed out of town towards Chris's house. As we passed Medina she suggested we stop in. She said JEAN MOORE Demus now owns Medina. The Medical Center has merged with Medina and SUE JOHNSON is R.N. nurse there. As we pulled out of the parking lot at Medina a truck came zooming over the hill. We swerved to miss them, but couldn't avoid the acci- dent. I could see there were 2 occupants in the truck and I was just waiting to get hold of their hide. I climbed out of my car and to my surprise there stood BRAD CLARK and MIKE LARSON. They told me they had gone into farming together. Mike was involved in sheep, while Brad was in on the dairy end of it with 300 head of dairy cows, After talking to them awhile, I asked Brad if he knew of anyone who could hx my car in less than a week. He suggested l'Neil and Steve's Garage . It stands where Cecil's used to be and is run by NEIL LAUBE and STEVE HELWIG. Steve designs the cars and Neil builds them. They did an excellent job of fixing my car. They had it done in 3 days and since I was an old friend, gave me an exceptional discount. I had been anticipating Friday night all that week and finally it arrived. As Chris and I pulled up in front of the school, I turned and looked at the other car behind us and I couldn't believe it. There sat the biggest Lincoln Continental I had ever seen! I was just dying to see who was going to get out of the car. To my surprise, it was ERNIE LILJA and his two body guards, RUSS SEVERSON and BOB ZWIGAR. I be- gan talking to Ernie and he said they had struck oil on his farm, so now he was a millionaire. After a few minutes another familiar face approached us, PAT SMYERS. It turns out that she is Ernie's personal travel agent. Russ and Bob said they were doing fine. Bob said he had married WAN DA MOATE. She sings with the New York Philharmonic. Chris then informed me we must go in the school, or we would never have time to look around before the game started. Iwalked in the door and was greeted by two handsome men. It was DON NESEMEIER and GORDON CASE. It seems Don has become principal and Gordon vice-principal. They said the year before JULIE VORMEZEELE had been over both positions as superintendent, but quit in order to take a position of Dean at Notre Dame, Walking down the halls I saw one of my old teachers, Ms. Reiss. She was accompanied by LAURIE TH RASHER, the new assistant coach. They both advised me to visit the science department, where I would see something quite interesting. We walked in the door and there be- fore our eyes stood DIRK COOPER and DEBBIE ATKINSON. Debbie was talking to MARK LONG advising him to put a patent on his new wood stove that burns only one tree a winter. Both Debbie and Dirk felt it was an excellent investment and were going to perform several class experiments with it. Just then JODY SPORS, the new shop teacher walked in. It seems he's interested in the wood that Mark burns for building furniture, As we came out of the room we noticed an awful leak in the ceiling creating a small pond on the floor. I went to find a janitor to hx the leak and who comes out of the boiler room but MARK MARTENS. He is well known for his handiness around the school, and he cleaned up the mess right away. Finally, we got in the gym and found a seat. I turned to my right and found RITA WALLER Mareth sitting next to me. She and her hus- band, Mike, were there watching their son, Mike, Jr. He was being coached by BILL DAMON. Rita said she also had a new brother-in-law, JAY JOHNSON. He got his degree at R.V.C. and is now head wrestling coach, replacing Mr. Schwab. I looked out on the floor and saw not a Bulldog, but a Chicken! It was Chicken Man, DOUG PRICE. Doug's dream had come true after all-a feature show on llReal People. The San Diego Padres drafted him as head mascot for 51,000 a day. He thought he would come back and make one last appearance at DHS before going on the road again. The game has started and we're ahead until one of the players goes for a lay-up, he stumbles and falls unconscious to the Hoor. Everyone is gathered around, when out of the crowd comes a woman yelling at the other to give him air. It turns out to be NANCY TRUESDALE, head nurse at school. She revives the player and the game continues. After what seemed like hours the game ended. We won by 2 points in overtime. Yea! Believe me, I was ready to hit the hay. We went back to Chris' house. I had to get up early the next morning to leave. I left at 7:30 the next morning, and while reflecting on the week I'd spent 'lback home, I noticed I was coming on a huge billboard that read 'iLong's Strawberry Farm. I knew it could be nobody else but PATTY LONG. Butl never dreamed she would own a strawberry farm, even though she loved strawberrys in high school. The closer I got to Atlanta, the more I realized how lucky I was to go back and see all of my friends. The thing that made me the hap- piest, Ithink, was to see that they all seemed truly happy. And that is the best lthomesick medicine anyone can ask for. wl-no s WHAT? 8 X 1 .Q f 5 5 5' T' as 5. ,if A, ...fi gigs ' I -M ,V ' f . .3 w t' A ,:24'? f .
