1968 basketball on wednesday, march 6, the dukes defeated the frankies in a game which saw ron guziak break three school records. The highlights of the game, all attributed to ron, were: he scored 50 points, breaking a duquesne record. he hit on 24 field goals, and he shot 69 percent. ron bested willie somerset's 1964 performance against Xavier by 3 points. in scoring 109 ponts, the dukes tied a record set by the team of 1953 against geneva. overall the team shot 49 per cent. less than a Week before the dukes received the long-awaited invitation to participate in the nit, they received and turned down a bid to play in the ncaa tournament. although the ncaa holds more prestige than the nit, the dukes felt that an nit championship would bring all the pres- tige they needed at the time. in early December, 1967, the dukes copped the steel bowl tournament by defeating the air force academy in the opener, and going on to defeat pitt. the little dukes won their 13th consecutive game on wednesday, march 6, against the frankie's freshman team. with 3:20 left to play, jarrett durham fouled out, joining barry and garry nelson and steve mchugh on the bench. but the 3 remaining iron dukes frustrated the frankies and caused them to commit error after error. the final score was 85-74, and the little dukes had done it again. monday, february 19, brought good tidings to the dukes in the form of an invitation to the nit post-season tournament. the duke's opener, in which they played fordham, was a real heartbreaker . lack of teamwork was one of the biggest causes for the fact that our dukes were defeated 69-60. the sports banquet was held in the union in may. at this time awards were presented to the following students: basketball: ron guziak, tennis: lou debone, rifle: mark kreshole, cross- country: Vince kovalik, duchesses: joanne mcdonald, baseball: gary carmassi, golf: mark mc- connville. three special awards were also presented to our athletes at the banquet. the judge Weiss award to the senior athlete who best combines scholarship and athletics went to ron guziak, it was an engraved watch. the mr. and mrs. j. burns memorial award was presented to mark mcconnville. an unexpected award was presented to ron guziak at the close of the program, coach red manning presented ron with the basketball with which he scored his record- breaking 50th point during the Duquesne-frankie game. 7 l?
