After a successful year's editorship behind her, Susan Muto handed over the deadline schedule to sophomore columnist Lawrence VValsh. VValsh and crew changed the Duke from a five to six column newspaper, and gave the university two Dukes a week the last weeks of the semester. Mary Ann Healey G. l 1 i sl Hay lbiralmu It is essentially a misnomer to refer to the Duquesne magazine as an organization. It has none. Rather, it is a group of poets, writers, artists, car- toonists and coolies who, when the spirit moves them, gather under the sign of Claude Q. Slipshocl and put together a magazine three, or perhaps four, times a year. While the staff actually has an official office, they dare anyone to find it. Unofficially, it is Albertis back room, the Wall, or wherever the editors happened to be. This year the quack efforts of the magazine to present the real Duquesne to the students touched off a War with the Dukes Walsh and Companyl' -a formidable crew. Using their warning, L,Esprit Du Duc has de- cided to start a rival magazine. Look for it at your favorite newsstand. 'f . Y l-ff 'rl1' ' 1, K X x. ml? TTT'- Once again the Red and Blue of Duquesne capped a fine season with a trip to New York and an N.I.T. Tournament bid. Their loss to Army in the hair-raising initial game of the N.I.T. did little to dim their other achievements throughout the season. The Dukes' fabulous per- formance in the devastating defeat of a strong Toledo team, 98-66, clinched their bid. The finals of the Steel Bowl Tournament against Pitt will long be remembered and hotly discussed as the Dukes had apparent victory snatched from them on a timekeeper's decision, only to lose in overtime as Willie Somerset fouled out. Wee Willie turned in several record-break- ing performances by scoring 46 points against St. Bonaventure, only to top himself with a 47 point barrage against Xavier. Backing Somerset was the precision outside shooting of Ron Willard, the defense and scor- ing of Willie Ross, and the leadership of Denny Cuff, who directed the Dukes' attack. Iolm Cegalis, Walt Lautsch, and Pat Schipani pro- vided the team with big men and bench strength. Named Co-Coach of the Year by Pittsburgh sports writers, .Iohn Red,' Manning continued the tradition of the Duquesne Dukes by leading them to another victorious season. 1 'T ,,v ff mia' mm' 'Qgil IUC 6 lil 'li p UOIIEsn Basketball '1 -1-1' 4' -- .L f ..-. . I 1 .4 W x B- Hall of Fame L,Esprit Du Duc annually honors those seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the university, not only in academic achievement, but in extra-curricular service. This year sixteen stu- dents were awarded certificates and named to the Hall of Fame at the first annual Senior Awards Day, sponsored by Student Congress. Nominations were accepted from the deans of the different schools, the heads of departments, and all organizations on campus. Those students receiving more than one nomination were selected as final candidates. Their names and qualifications were submitted to the Student Wfelfare and Special Activities committees and through combined bal- lotting the final sixteen Were chosen. The follow- ing pages are devoted to these students. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is not only to recognize outstanding seniors, but to give Wit- ness to their attitude. Each member has made an active contribution and commitment to Duquesne. No paper certificate nor Words of praise can equal the results which this attitude has already achieved in personal development and influence upon others. If this attitude of self-giving reflects that of the entire university, every student is honored in the Hall of Fame. 1 I Jordon A. Cohen jordan Cohen has made outstanding contributions to the university as is evidenced in his active partici- pation in both the academic and social fields. Iordan, a member of the Iournalism Association, served as secretary of Sigma Delta Chi, honorary journalism fraternity. He held the office of vice-president in Beta Pi Sigma fraternity and led the group to a second place trophy in Greek Sing during his senior year. Not limited in his scope of interests, this Dean's List student was a member of the Concert Choir, Seab- bard and Blade, the Student Congress, and WDUQ. 222 Dorothy A. Garrity An English major and Dean's List student, Dorothy Garrity demonstrated her poetic talents as a frequent contribution to The Duke, Duquesne magazine, and The Rectangle, the Sigma Tau Delta national publication. She acted as vice- president and president of the national honorary English fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta. Along with this, her membership in Psi Chi and the Philosophy Club indicate a varied fifid of interest. The first woman student to graduate with a minor in Theology, Dorothy also served as Secre- tary of the Chi Rho Society for two years. Her belief in Christian brotherhood is not only witnessed in her active participation in the Catholic Interracial Council, but in her genuine concern for others. ,nl fl9.yII1OI1d C. I-Iengelsberg Scholarship, leadership, modesty - ex- cellence in one is rare, and yet, Ray is the epitome of all three. His academic ability gained for him a place on the Dean's List, the scholarship key of Phi Alpha-Theta, and a graduate as- sistantship in history. He amply demon- strated his ability to lead as president of both CCUN and ICC, as an organizer of Student Congress, and as leader of Du- quesne's liberals. After all this, Ray sincerely thought that there were others who were more deserv- ing of membership in the Hall of Fame. Bay is a rare combination, indeed. 1452 Stuart A. Herrington Little wonder that Stu is so well known on campus- his intelligence, personality, and ability to lead are matched by only a few. A political science major and graduating cum laude, he served as Brigade Commander of Army R.O.T.C., president of Scabbard and Blade Fratemity, and as a member of the Ranger Raiders. In addition, he was on the Dean's List, a College Bowl nominee, and a winner of an NDEA three-year scholarship to the University of Florida leading to a Ph.D. in public relations. In recognition of his many contributions, he received the President's Award for Outstanding Achievement in R.O.T.C. and appeared in Whcfs lVh0 Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. 223 Carol M . Los For her academic excellence and continued place on the Dean,s List, Carol was graduated cum laude, for her excellence in all her endeavors, L,Esp1'it Du Duc would graduate her summa cum laude. A major in political science, she was a member of the Pre-Law Society, Sigma Tau Delta, honorary English fraternity, and Sigma Lambda Phi. Carol also participated in the Chi Rho Society, the Young Democrats, and the Student Congress, and was presi- dent and secretary of the Women's Residence Council. For most people that would be more than enough, but added to her other talents, Carol also has beauty, which resulted in her nominations for Festival Queen and the Campus Cover Girl Contest. Carol,s many achievements resulted in her deserv- ed listing in lVl1o's VVho Among Students in Ameri- can Colleges cmd U-niversitties. Trudi Jenny Trudi is that highly uncommon person who has the ability to lead without push- ing - an ability that stems from her care and concern for others. Coupled with her knack for accomplishing tasks in the best possible fashion, it has re- sulted, over the past four years, in her becoming Co-Editor of L,Esprit Du Duc and both secretary and pledge mistress of her sorority, Sigma Lambda Phi. Trudi, an English major, has made several contributions to the Duquesne Magazine and is a member of the Chi Rho Society. Those that are acquainted with Trudi are proud to call her friend. 224 Q? Patricia M arwood Renowned for her school spirit, Patricia Marwood entered into many academic and social facets of campus life. An education maior who was consisten- tly on the Deanis List, Pat was a cheerleader for three years and co-captain of the squad for two of these years. Her versatility is witnessed in her other interests, which include membership in the Folk Dance Club and the Concert Choir. As a leader in the School of Education, Pat acted as treasurer of Kappa Delta Epsilon, national pro- fessionl education sorority. Her willingness to serve others is seen in her acceptance of the offices of chapter vice-president, state secretary and a mem- ber of the Executive Council of the Pennsylvania Student Education Association, ' - ,..r , rigllr ltr, ,f I. if : gf,- 'x -w 4 225 --5-If H E f Ann Mattimore Petite Ann Mattimore has been a dynamo of activity during her college years at Duquesne. A Deanis List student, she was instrumental in the successful orientation of the class of 1965 and was a member of the yearbook staff in her freshman year. Annls vital interest in education was demon- strated through her membership in the PSEA, NF CCS and Kappa Delta Epsilon, honorary edu- cation sorority of which she was vice-president, president and a National Convention represen- tative. r 4 i Walter E. M eye-:rs XValt Meyers was an example of the harmonious inter- action of scholarship with extra-curricular activities through which he made outstanding contributions to the Duquesne family. History maior on the Dean's List for four years, Wfalt held membership in Sigma Tau Delta, the Debate Society in his freshman year, L,Esprit Du Duc and VVDUQ. He actively participated in the Red Masquers as a director, actor, and author. The Duquesne magazine was led to successful publication because of his contributions as editor, writer, and artist. For his creative talents, lValt was awarded the 1962 Drama League Award and appeared in XVho's lVh0 Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. 226 it-i Susan A. Muto For the past four years Sue Muto has been an outstanding student, worker, leader, and personality on Duquesne's campus. The honors and awards she has received in the field of journalism and as Editor- in-Chief of the Duke are simply two numerous to list. Her participation at the first U. S. Youth Council on Human Rights, her membership in the WDUQ Radio Guild and Sigma Phi Delta, social sorority - all these serve to make the rainbow of Sueis personality more colorful. Recognition was given to that personality by a place on the Deanis List, a nomination to the College Bowl team, and a listing in YVho,s W'ho Among Students in American Col- leges and Universities. , 1 lt. -:A 1,..- ' ' 1 hz :Q wi .4 '- f . .-I . .fig If L- .. A Dean's List student, Mary Ann has capably served both Alpha Phi Omicron sorority and the Pan-Hellenic Council as President. Adapting her literary talent to sorority life, she served as Carnival Script Committee Chairman for two years. Her ability to organize was seen when she acted as Chairman of the sorority lecture for one year. As an active English major, graduating cum laude, Mary Ann contributed to the Duke, L'Esp1'it Du Duc, and Duquesne Magazine. Because of her academic achievement, she was a College Bowl nominee and the recipient of an Honors English Scholarship. 227 William D. Peresm an In his four years at Duquesne, Bill could best be described as a leader among leaders. Serving Duquesne in many ways, he held membership in the Student Govern- ment Association, the Student Congress, and the Red Masquers, and was treasurer and vice-president of Alpha Epsilon Fra- ternity. Well-wortli noting is Bill's academic success in achieving the Deanas List seven of the eight semesters he was here. Perhaps Bill's most far-reaching influence will come from his tenure as president of IFC, during which time he improved not just the status of the Creeks, but of the entire student body. .LS.a-,-,.a1Tn 1 ' BI-igette A. Petroski A student of Business Administration, Brigette was active in many phases of campus activitiy. She is probably most well known for her vivacious participation in the Duquesne sports picture as a cheerleader and member of the Pep Club. Active in sorority affairs for three years, she has served Tau Delta Tau as Pan Hellenic Representative, Treasurer and President. Not neglecting her academic pursuits, Brigette won a place on the Dean's List and was a member of Epsilon Eta Phi national xvomen's business sorority, and the Re- galia, Insignia and Emblem National Committee. 228 ai-f mtl is Ronald Quinn Ron was one of the few students given the opportunity to carry the name of Du- quesne to the public before graduation. A major in the School of Music, he was not only a member of Duquesne's Sym- phonic Orchestra and XVoodwind Quintet, but also was principal bassoonist of the All-Pennsylvania Symphonic Orchestra and a member of the Xllheeling Symphony.
