Miss Marie Brings is the efficient advisor of the group in its varied and infortnative pro- gratn. During Latin lveek, the members visited the lluhl Planetarium. Harvey Benovitz, vice- president and program chairman, represented the purely male view in his enthusiasm for Aphrodite, portrayed by a lovely Latin student from a neighboring school. President 'l'heresa Czernai and Beverly Van- iel, secretary, labored many an hour prepar- ing for the progratn presented to future Latin Club metnbers. As the members of Circulus Latinus leave Duquesne High, their parting words will be Ave atque vale. German Club Unser Deutscher Verein, in the skillful hands of Nvilliam Ebertshauser, president, established a precedent this year by opening the membership to the first year class. Patricia Stevenson, secretary, reported, At- tendance good at all the meetings. Much of the credit for this must be given to Jack Stanley, program chairman, who expended time and energy to lining up interesting and educational programs. Ceorge lkach, vice-president, ably assisted Bill, and Miss Esther Forrest, the faculty spon- sor, was at all times at source of inspiration and help. Certainly this club has given to its students a clear and forceful picture of the important role of the stttdy of foreign language in the modern world. Spanish Club During the past twenty years our govern- ment. has been emphasizing the importance to our own nation of friendly international rela- tions with predominately Spanish-speaking South America. The policies of our state de- partment on the whole have been designed to strengthen our ties with the countries south of the border. Xvitness the Pan American Con- gresses and our reciprocal trade agreentents. A reflection of this interest was the Spanish Club, which was sponsored by faculty advisor Miss Esther Forrest. Its chief aspiration was the study of the language, history, geography, literature, and customs of Spanish-speaking countries. ln these tneetings the general objective wa: developed through varied progratn material. French Club Parlez-vous francais? To this question ntany students can confidently answer, Oni, je parle francais, through the help of French Club tneetings. XfVith Mlle. Hazel Stewart as moderator, it provided a mutual bond of language interest for its members. Scholarship, knowledge, and fellowship was the motto. Because the meetings were held during class periods, the club separated into three groups. The presidents, Barbara Rohoski, Con- nie Tzatnouxakis, and Ethel Kotrady, planned the monthly programs which included songs, speeches, and playlets designed to help the student learn more about France, her customs, and her language. Combining their talents, the club presented an assembly program to acquaint students with the important role of language in the world today. Art Club Give this tnore depth and shade that jus' a little. lnstrttctions similar to these echoed throughout the junior high art room, as issued by the talented and soft-voiced Miss Cora Wright, with the .-Xrt Club, for their Friday afternoon talent session. Nlany times the members took to the great outdoors.sketching whatever appealed to their fancy. They worked in oils and pastels. they did a little sculptttre as well as sotne figure painting. They also combined talents and hard work to prodttce tlte exquisite scenery and backgrounds for tlte dramatic prodttctions staged at the high school. Whether surrealistic, classic, or futuristic in approach, the Picasso's and Van Roult's of this group enjoyed tlte divine pleasttre of self-ex- pression. Guitlanee Representatives The present world-wide turmoil has pointed tlte need for counseling services. Under the supervision ol' Mrs. lNlartha Kemerer, a pro- gram has been made available to Duquesne students to help them to a happy and well- directed life and to help them attain maxi- nnttn development and social adjustment. Nlrs. Kemerer, with the guidance represen- tatives frotn each homerootn, planned the bi- monthly discussion programs. The sophomore class had as their topic My High School l,ife Z the junior class, Understanding lNlysell ': tlte seniors examined from all angles Planning A l uture. Nlrs. Kemerer emphasized tlte important role ol' these representatives in the total pro- gram. They are essential to tlte present guidance program. Duane Mellon, supplied the musical background lor Nlellolrs Minstrels ol' I953. Duquesne citizens look forward to the old miustrel umsic in the traditional and lam- iliztr Mississippi river-boat style. Certainly when the curtain goes up next year, minstrel lans will miss Daniel Hreben- ach and his tenor sax, spicing the air. Britton NVatt's trumpet will be strangely silent. Long hours ol' :titer-school practice were necessary to achieve the perfection and polish ol' this year's perlormance. The Serenaders. like all show people, lelt adequately and lully paid by the warm applause ol' the audience. Spiritual Singers Occupying at unique place in the musical organizations at Duquesne were the Spiritual Singers, a group dedicated to singing the hauntiugly beautiful and distinctive music ol' the spirituals. At the Christmas assembly, which was their lirst public appearance, Miss Maude XVither- son, director, led the group in Mary, lVhat Yo Gonna Call That Tiny Little Baby? The audiences at MelIou's Minstrels were the next to hear the subtle rhythms ol' the singers, as they sang Let My People Go. The excellence ol' these perlormers was in keeping with their long and colorful cultural tradition. SEREN ADERS First Row, l. to r.-J. Botsko, E. Onofrey, C. Pepper, R. Feyes, D. Hrehenach, R.
