We recollect the pal he used to be, His classmates all, with whom he walked to school, Attended gym, went swimming in the pool, Planned graduation-goal we all foresee. But then one afternoon he seemed to hear Accelerated rhythm from above And caught the stride before we, loitering near, Could sound one parting syllable of love. He joined the angel minstrels on parade Commencing life eternal unafraid. ARTHUR PEPPER-'46 .fell Qc Back ,Za ,Me Gm-Ream 364001 ,game Abs 7,!w Edu Vx f Xigx ex Huy, ,F,,.... 1 X 2 I ' Ms? Miss Wirlxerson Miss Wright Mr. Carey 9 .2149 Kick T I' a tvs CfLIl'l'n Bugs genie-M liverybody has looked forward to the day when he can say, l'm finally a Senior. So it is with the 2tiAl seniors of the graduating class of lfllti. During the senior year there are many ac- tivities in which the Senior may participate: for instance, dttring Chapel, which is made up lltlt only of Seniors, but -luniors also. '1'here have been many who have taken part during these exercises. .Xmong them are lXlarilyn XVood and Mary Yaroshuk. Also George Powers, Rosemarie Voivoda, and Robert Stoner had solo parts with special chor- uses with the mixed octette. 'l'his year, for the first time in the history of the lligh School, we had the privilege of having a radio program broadcasted from the auditorium stage, under the sponsorship of Station KQV. Should Projects l,ike the Tennessee Valley .Xuthority lie lixtended to .Xreas of the United States? was discussed by Sunny Maurer and l-lerbert iXl2lll'I'OV, with Dolly .Xrdinger and Sherman Katz represent- ing tllassport. Sunny and Dolly discussed the aflirmativez llerbert and Sherman the nega- tive. .-Xn Andrew .Iackson discussion also took place with Rosemary Curran, Phyllis Beck, Robert Shaw, and Richard Holan giving many interesting facts about the life of our seventh president. t .Xnother interesting discussion, under the direction of Mrs. Marian Carpenter, took place in February when several of the seniors took part in a debate with XVashington and Lincoln being discussed. .Ks always lootball and basketball take a prominent place in the activities of not only Seniors but the -luniors and Sophomores as well. ln football, our boys were victorious when we llltft the lNIcKeesport Tigers and defeated them. After such a victory the team and stu- dent body had a glorious one day vacation, greatly appreciated by all. ln basketball. however, the team was not as fortunate as the team of ISH4 to go to Phila- delphia to win the lV.l'.l.A.L. championship. This year there were several other days of vacation in addition to that one. Among them were the Conference of the 'leachers of XfVest- ern Pennsylvania, Armistice Day, Tllanksgiv- ing, Christmas, Easter, lNlemorial Day, and a one day vacation due to a threatened Power Strike. XVhen the members of the class of '46 look back and remetnber all the things they did during their schooling, they will be able to truthfully say that their senior year was the llltbsl wonderful of all the years of school. 4 J Andrva Anrlmnv Ihkcr IMI--lmn Hn Iuglx Ihrnlda Andn-55 Iiabyak Ilnlrbunna. The Philologists' Club, which has a Sophomore for its president, is composed almost completely of tenth graders, while the Sophomore Girls' Chorus is entirely a tenth-grade organization. The curriculum of the Academic Students has been enlarged this year to include European History the second semester. The Sophomores elected class ol'l'icers lor the first time in the history ol' Duquesne High. Those chosen were joseph Onofrey, presi- dent: Robert Yasko, secretary: and liugene Barnyak, treasmcr. Several line programs have been presented at Sophomore chapel. Three Sophomore girls, . A . l A L A .L .,. .Ioan Farley, Lucy Carrick, and Gloria lflister have sling with the Mt-llon's Serenaders al both -junior-Senior and Sophomore chapel. The pianists each Thursday morning have been Betty Ann Culp and Richard Zimmerman. The tankers, coached by Mr. Grane, engaged in seven dual meets, of which, sad to say, they lost all. In the annual X'V.l'.l.A.L. meet held at Pittsburgh, George Davis boosted PLA Mr. l'arker's Pirates gave the old l1ope chest a mighty lift when they dumped the highly touted Donora Dragons, 5-4, in the season's inaugural. 'l'he win seemed to herald great things to come for our diamond crusaders as well as the regaining of the sectional crown which they lost for the first time last season. The Dukes' field was one which showed Bartko at first, llromanik on second, Fulmer fl, This year the track team, to a great extent, is composed of a goodly number of promis- ing -juniors. Although the squad has placed in some events, they have never come home with the bacon, mainly because of their C Mr. Lennuer called the golfers together Qfor the first time since l942j for the opening session of the I9-lti season. In the relay the team placed fourth. The outlook for next year's team is much brighter, and with the capable coaching of Mr. Grane, the team has a wonderful chance of proving its worth. Y BALL RAC at the short stop post and Timko on third, while the outfield was comprised of Ragan 'l'urocy, and Magdic. '1'he batteries were Miklosko, Genito, A Zewe, Zewe, N. Pacaclia, Lenhart, Hodnik Foremsky, and Konar. Schoderbeck, Goltz G. Pacacha, Kollar, Kloska, S. Yauichko, Boronky, and Hays rounded out the squad. These boys gave plenty of trouble to the op' position. 1 1 1 K lack of experience. Unlike previous years, the subjects, under which the students studied, were cho- sen by the students themselves. These studies included such subjects as: dress design, poster design, cartooning, stamp design, architecture, ligure drawing, landscaping, etc. 'l'he posters advertising the Spring Festival and the Class Play were drawn and silksereen- ed by members ol the Art Club. Also this year, we had several members ol' the Art Club, who, because ol their special ability in certain subjects, attended special classes at Carnegie Institute ol 'I'echnology and the Pittsburgh Art Institute. Many ol' these were entered lor their second year in these classes. The scenery for the Christmas Play and also this year's Class Play was done by mem- bers ol' the Art Club. As a special activity, the Art students made a trip by bus to Carnegie Museum to see the exhibit on Painting in the United States. All ol' the drawings shown both in the Iicho paper and the Yearbook were done by some members ol the Echo Art Stall, which is a special division ol' the Art Club. Irene Puspoki and Anita Powers received smnmer scholarships from Carnegie Tech. All the other entries are on the preferred list lor next year in their art classes of Saturday AlXl. 'l'bus it may be seen that the Art Club is worthy ol connnendation for its line work this past year. - The cashiers this year carried on their work expertly and efficiently, under the capable guidance of their advisers, Mrs. Beech and Mrs. Frey. This group of Sophomores, juniors, and Seniors collected money for the Echo subscriptions and also handled the money for the Echo yearbook. In addition to this they collected money for the movies. This money was used toward helping along the expenses for the paper and the yearbook itself. The room cashiers were rewarded for their fine work, by getting free admittance to the movies. The following' selections in this year's repertoire were, Carmena, hy XVilson3 The Orchestra Song hy Schumann, Now Breaks The Dawn hy Saint-Sains: The Butterfly hy Delihes: Silent Sea by Neidlingerg Calm As the Night hy Bohm: and Dance of the Pine Tree Fairies hy Forman. Nevertheless, this doesn't subtract lrom its efficiency. At ten minutes before each dismissal hell, these boys can be seen standing guard at the open doors ol' our building. The Safety Squad is also called upon to help in other matters throughout the school. Wlhen the members ol our higll school go to the Plaza during school sessions to see an educational movie or when they go elsewhere in a group, the Salety Squad paves the way lor them. 'l'hese boys direct us when we have our fire drills and they see that we do not go in the wrong direction fwhieh many ol us are tempt- ed to doj when we are dismissed. In rainy weather, they answer our parents' questions as through what door their Mary or llohnny is dismissed. ANI I 'fm ll f,!l1IPIIS UH lllf .lH.' I-Jlwmf ' UNF!
