Emphasis is placed upon the specialized needs of the college preparatory students. The general science program offered in junior high consists of fundamental concepts in all fields of science to help the students discover their partic- ular interests and abilities. M . , U Biology is the study of living things. To gain a better understanding of the make-up of living things, students are given the opportunity to dissect speci- mens. These include earthworms, crayfish, and frogs Last year, for interested student.s, duPont initi- ated an Advanced Biology course on the first year college level. Zoology and botany are thoroughly studied for a semester each. The highlight of the course is the dissection of rats. Through chemistry, students develop a knowledge of matter and an understanding of physical and chemical changes. Both description and historical approaches are used in the study of the common elements. The practical application of the chemical principles in laboratory experiments stimulates the students interest. Physics is a highly mathematical science and there- fore, only students with strong mathematics back- grounds are advised to take physics. Physics is taught with the aid of movies showing experiments which could not be conducted in the classroom. Included in the course are the studies of mechanics, electricity, light, sound and theoretical physics. 126
