During the last few years, Fencing has begun to de- velop as a major sport in high schools. Although it has not reached its peak in Jack- sonville, the duPont Fencing team continues to dominate most of the important fenc- ing meets. Early in the school year, four sword-bear- ing Dragons participated in the Teenage Foil Tourna- ment at St. Petersburg, Flor- ida. Captain Bill Lapeza, who snared second in the finals Was the only team member to place, but the fact that duPont was the only school represented from Jacksonville adds prestige to our fine fencing unit. Since there are but few teams in the city, the fencing Dragons do not get much interscholastic practice, and have had no other meets of great importance. The season will be climaxed by the State Championship, which in- cludes all ages of fencers. This will be held in May at the Mayflower Hotel. Started about three years ago, the team is growing in strength and magnitude gradually. An open invita- tion to join is extended to all people eligible for athletic participation. FE CI G TE A110118 and to the right: Captain Bill Lapeza and Jim Flacli demonstrate, in a mock duel, the use of the foil, thc most predominant instrument used in fencing.
