Jimmy Markert, the dude! Homecoming 15 ■■ Tiger Team Raids The The Tigers are fired up at the beginning of the game and came out smoking in the first quarter. The team scored 21 points in the game s first 10 minutes of play. Co-captains Scott Tieman and Mike Ryan win the toss and elect to let Columbia receive on the kickoff. Todd Thrasher takes it in for the first touchdown of the game after only 4:06 minutes of play. 16 Homecomin; Eagles' Lofty Nest 42-12 Winning this one was a double treat for the Dupo Tigers, rated as one of the top Class 2A teams in the state. It was the Tigers' Homecoming game and, almost more importantly, the opponents were the Columbia Eagles. The Tigers started fast and took control early in the game. They received the ball on their own 25, and Ron Hunsaker had runs of 18 and 16 yards wrapped around a 13-yard gain by Derek Tieman. Then, on second and 11 from the Eagle 16, quarterback Scott Tieman rolled left and hit Todd Thrasher for the first touchdown after just 4:06 of play. Scott booted in the extra point making the score 7-0. On Columbia's second play after the kickoff, Jeff Plunkett intercepted a tipped pass at the Columbia 37. Four plays later, Derek Tieman took a handoff from brother Scott and hustled down the sideline for the second touchdown. Then the Eagles, once again failing to move down the field after the kickoff, were forced to punt from their 38 yard line. Derek Tieman fielded the ball on his own 40 and proceeded to whiz by every Columbia tackier in his 60-yard path to the end zone. Scott's PAT made the score 21-0 with still over a minute to play in the first quarter. Second quarter stats show a TD for the Eagles and a dive over the middle by Ron Hunsaker late in the quarter. Hunsaker finished the game with 93 yards. Opening the second half with a 28-6 lead over the Eagles, the Tigers were well on their way to a victory. Midway through the third quarter, Scott Tieman scored to make it a 34-6 game. Then Scott's PAT was tipped at the line, but still bounced off the crossbar and over. Early in the fourth quarter, Jeff Plunkett, filling in for Tieman, went 29 yards for Dupo's final touchdown of the game. Columbia scored late in the quarter with 1:12 to play. The Tigers raid on the Eagles' lofty nest ended in a final score of 42-12. No problem! Derek Tieman eludes another Eagle tackier as he returns the punt for 60 yards and a touchdown. 81 Dan Howell clears the way for another run by 43 Ron Hunsaker. Defensive Coach Brillhart keeps an eye on his players. Breaking this tackle could be a problem for Dan Howell. There isn't much time for warming up the bench during this high scoring game. Just look back — three first place floats, a first place skit, two overall homecomings, a very profitable Junior Committee and an excellent prom. Through the past four years you've not only helped with class activities, but you've taught us a lot about life and helped all of us mature a great deal. For the students who thought the first year with Mr. Nightlinger was fun and exciting, the second was even better. The year began, of course, with the Marching Tigers continuing the new tradition of field shows at all the home football games. The Marching Tigers also played a vital role during Homecoming week, performing at the bonfire and marching in the parade. Along with the local performances, the Marching Tigers also made two trips to the University of Illinois. The first was the U. of I. Marching Contest, where the Tigers competed in both parade, and for the first time ever, the field show competition. Later, the Marching Tigers returned to U. of I. to participate in Band Day. They were part of a 2,700 piece band which represented over forty schools in the state of Illinois. After marching season was over, attention was turned to the upcoming annual Christmas concert. At the same time. Pep Band began work for their season, which would include being part of a combined band with Columbia at an away basketball game, and also performing for the Harlem Magicians when they visited D.C.H.S. While all of the normal events were taking place, work also began on a few extra projects. The first was a trip by four D.C.H.S. seniors to the Bi-State Band Festival at Southern Illinois University-Ed-wardsville. The Concert Band traveled to Sesser, second time in some twenty years that the Tigers participated in this event, and they brought home a First Place trophy. Later was the St. Clair County Music Festival at Belleville Area College, which was attended by fourteen D.C.H.S. students. Next, Jazz Band began practice for their gigs which included performances at Hough P.T.A., the St. Clair County Administrators meeting, and the first annual Dupo Lip Sync Contest. While this was going on, Dupo hosted the I.H.S.A. Sole-Ensemble Contest, where Dupo earned eleven Firsts, six Seconds, and three Thirds. Finally, there were performances by both Jazz and Concert Bands at the Spring Concert Fine Arts Festival, and, of course, graduation. Possible summer performances for the Marching Tigers include a return engagement at the V.P. Parade and the Dupo Fall Festival. Besides all of the band activities, there was also the forming of the Dupo Music Boosters to help the band along in morale and finances. They began by planning a talent show during November, but due to problems with several of the acts, the event had to be cancelled. The club took this in stride and immediately turned its attention to preparing for the Spring Play. After months of set construction, costuming, and many late rehersals, they presented The Diary of Anne Frank on April 11 and 12. After the cast and crews had recuperated from the play, several Drama Club members put together a small Variety Show that went to several nursing homes on May 23. The program is set up like that of the real United Nations in New York. Students from fifteen high schools go to McKendree College in the fall and spring to use their skills to debate the issues they have in the committees to which they are assigned. The program is geared toward the assertive student. At the Spring 1987 session Dupo High School represented the countries of Israel and Australia. Delegates to the Model U.N. must write a resolution and a position paper on their country's views on particular issues. This means that the students must know past and current events. There are also mock sessions that the delegates must attend. These sessions are for the delegates to practice the rules of debate and to increase their debating skills. Votes are taken and resolutions are either passed or rejected. Solutions to some of the world's major problems are discussed. To even be considered for National Honor Society membership, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 at the end of the first semester during their junior year. After this has been established, every teacher in the school has the opportunity to rate the students in other areas, such as character and leadership. The Caho-kia Chapter of the National Honor Society here at D.C.H.S. held its annual installation on May 13 during a special National Honor Society Tea. The Society was established in 1919 and is operated by the National Council of Secondary School Principals. Any accredited secondary school may apply for a charter. Dupo ended the regular season 8-2. In the first round of the class 2A playoffs, the Tigers suffered a disappointing loss to Carlyle, 7-6. Coach Mauser says that the overall 8-2 record was a very successful season considering the team's lack of size. The 32 points per game average was the highest since Mauser has been at Dupo, and was second in the area. The '87 season will be a tough one, according to Mauser. There will be a lot of holes to fill with the loss of seniors Mike Ryan, Scott Tieman, Danny Howell and others. Mauser notes that the '87 Tigers will be composed of mainly juniors. This winning season was not accomplished just by going out and playing when it was game time. There was a lot of preparation before the season as the team used the first two weeks for doublesession practice. The practice was rough with exercises, followed by a long run, agility drills, and other skill-building exercises which helped the team prepare for the opening game. In addition, players spent an hour each day weightlifting. The games were hard, with the cold, heat, rain, and other bad conditions to play in. But, the squad was ready in spite of the hurdles. The Tigers usually play three opponents, but the other competitors, besides Belleville West, dropped out. The Tigers ended up tieing the Belleville West Maroons. The Dupo Jamboree followed and the Freshmen prevailed beating the Madison Trojans, Waterloo Bulldogs, and tieing Pinckneyville. Regular season play began with a win over Waterloo by a forfeit, followed by a big victory over the Triad Knights. Then the freshmen easily defeated Madison. The squad's next opponents were the Freeburg Midgets in which they won by a 28-6 margin. The Tigers then added yet another victory over their arch rival, the Columbia Eagles. The final game of the season was played at Grandview in which the Tigers put their undefeated year on the line. It was a hard battle. The young team fought hard and ended up with a victory and an unbeaten season. Camp The 1986-87 cheerleading squads did very well at the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) camp held at Eastern Illinois University during the summer. The junior varsity and varsity squads came back with a Superior Squad trophy, a spirit stick and all blue ribbons. The spirit stick must be won each day of the camp in order to take it home. Blue ribbons represent a Superior rating, red ribbons an Excellent and white ribbons Outstanding. The freshman squad returned with two blue ribbons and many reds. All of the girls came home with pulled muscles, aching bodies, excessive fatigue, less shaving cream, new gestures, memories of all the fun, and smiles on their faces. The year before Mr. Gericke took over as head coach, the team's record was 1 win and 18 losses. Last year's record was 12 and 6. Dupo finished this year with an impressive 13 and 7 record . . . the best ever season in girl's basketball history at D.C.H.S. The squad finished third in the conference. In the Regional Tourney, the girls avenged an earlier loss to Madison, but lost the Regional Championship to an excellent Brussels team. Playing on their home court, Brussels jumped out to an early halftime lead, but Dupo's girls actually outscored them the second half. Coach Gericke said he doesn't have any major plans for next year. He has tried to look to the future without seniors Robyn Linke, Trish Clark and Beverly Gillespie. The team put forth a tremendous effort this season along with Coach Schmidt who did an excellent job with the Junior Varsity. Considering the effort and assistance from his girls and assistant coach, Mr. Gericke is already looking forward to next year. 104 Girls Basketball Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Teams Back Row: Coach Schmidt, Jean Brown, Kerri Edwards, Patti Doerr, Stacy Mezo, Crystal Gilbert, Coach Gericke; Middle Row: Cheryl Cooper, Lisa George, Beverly Gillespie. Senior Danny Howell was one of the finest players in the area. He was helped by fellow seniors Kelly Foster, Brett Pyles and Marcus Foster. The emergence of sophomore Joe Brown as a force in the middle and sophomore Derek Tieman as a point guard provides a bright future for Tiger basketball. The highlight of the season was a heart stopping 58-57 victory over arch rival Columbia. Believe it or not! The school does not have a pool so most people do not know about the team. Members of the team come from every class. Linda Merkley is the only senior. Lana Brown is the only junior. The sophomore class, however, has many representatives. Shelly Dollins, Kerri Edwards, Jill Dungan, Leigh Ann Rains and Nikki Dell swim for the team. Teri Bollinger represents the freshman class. Dupo Junior High is also well represented even though they cannot participate until they are in high school. In the eighth grade, Lea Sopp is the only swimmer. The seventh grade has several swimmers: Tracy Pratt, Tanya Fisher, Tom Wells and Chris Merkley. The majority of these students swim twelve months per year. The rest swim during the summer for a local swim team. Practice can last anywhere from an hour and a half to four hours a day, five or six days a week. Some swimmers also run, lift weights, bike and do calisthenics. D.C.H.S. Prom 119 FOR OUR FRIENDS WHO SHALL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN As May draws near, you begin to notice more and more the feeling of discontent-Of goals never reached, chances never taken, words never spoken. But tonight is different . . . Tonight you celebrate lifelong friendships because you know the end is near. You share fun and laughter, hopes and dreams trying hard to hide each tear. Four years-It's all over way too fast. What used to be just dreams are now a part of your past. You begin to ask yourself the same old questions-Where will I be tomorrow? Will I be forgotten? The utter responsibility and complete freedom and the conflict between the two. Once high school is over you can never relive the moments you spent there. You can't even get close. You wonder how you'll make it out there alone. How hard it will be. And then it finally hits you .. . All at once All at once you learn that in order to grow you must remember the past and hold it in your heart. But look toward the future with an open mind; this isn't an end - it's just a new start. All at once you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow s ground is too uncertain for plans And you learn that futures have a way of falling down and dreams can crumble in your hands. And you learn, and you learn . . . with every goodbye you learn. You're not alone. You all share something. A desire, a need, a thin fabric of emptiness. No one is exactly sure what, but the end is near and the thin fabric is slowly ripping with each passing day, hour, and minute. You remember how hard your freshman year was . . . the fear, the tears. You thought you'd never make it You remember it all. You remember it with a smile. It's not over yet. And even if it can't last forever At least you can make the most of it. For our friends who shall never be forgotten a gift to show how much you will be missed.
