We never had the same sponsor for two years in a row; no one person held the same class office all four years; and where other classes got all the breaks, we had no such luck. Well, Mr. Gericke took it upon himself to take a class that was in sad shape and turned it into a force to be dealt with. For that, Mr. Gericke, we say, “Thanks a ton; we’ll never forget you.” Class of ’86 Ramona Sloan. President; Donna Hood. Vice-President; Sharolyn Lovell, Secretary; Kendra Pratt. Treasurer. Don Gericke, Sponsor. For twelve long years we’ve looked towards this day with eagerness and pride. Finally! Our day has come though many now have cried. Along the way we’ve shared together all our hopes and dreams; Though maybe not always pulling another, we’re hand-in-hand, it seems. And though throughout the school years the challenges have never ceased, The opportunities that have been folded up, now will become uncreased. So we wave good-bye to all our friends and hope it’s not forever. It’s time to walk in our own shoes-courage in every endeavor. Timidly we will enter the world, ready to make our mark. And soar as far as the sky will take us, gracefully as a lark. Our goals are set; we’ll achieve our highs as away time ticks. Our wings are spread as we glide-We’re the Class of ’86. As band students entered the band room on the first day of school this year, you could feel the excitement in the air. Sure, everyone had heard stories about Kent A. Nightlinger, an Eastern Illinois University graduate who would now “lead the troops.” But what was he really like? We’d find out soon enough. Mr. Nightlinger wasted no time in getting things started. He brought with him a spark which would re-ignite the music program here at D.C.H.S. The season officially began with the home football games, five to be exact. And to live up to the name “Marching Tigers,” we did just that, performing the first field shows in who knows how long. Besides the home football games, the Homecoming Parade and the SIU-C Homecoming Parade, the band also went to fire up both the teams and the fans at the state playoff games; and that was just in the fall. Next came the basketball games, both home and regionals. Concert band worked on the Christmas concert, and the Marching Tigers kept in shape by making their first (and last) appearance in the Soulard Mardi Gras Parade at the begin- ning of February (brrr). After that, things really got busy. While some students went to All-District band auditions in Mt. Vernon, others worked on their music for the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest, from which Dupo came home with four firsts, one second, and one third. Next came Stage Band’s appearances at Hough PTA and the Illinois J.C.’s convention in the Clarion downtown and the County Teacher’s Workshop. From there, both Stage and Concert Bands appeared in the Spring Concert, the Fine Arts Festival, Seniors Honor Day, and finally Graduation. During the summer, the band got together with the seniors to march in the V.P. Parade on July third in downtown St. Louis. 66 Ban Marching Tigers Front Row: Jeff Young. Rob Schmitt. Although the “World Liberation Alliance” gassed cities in both the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany during the spring session of the 14th annual McKendree College Model United Nations, the Dupo delegates representing those countries pleased sponsor Ms. Davie Sue Raker by escaping unharmed with three committee awards. This year’s Model U.N. executive committee concocted a simulated international crisis in which a mysterious terrorist group, the “W.L.A.,” detonated pre-placed cannisters of nerve gas in 27 cities throughout the world. During the session, the executive committee released fictitious Associated Press reports estimating “casualties” and United Kingdom Delegate Krista Betz works on her proposal. relaying the terrorists’ demands. The better delegates anticipated how their nations would react to the crisis by arguing either to give into or to ignore the demands. Before the quandry developed, students from fourteen schools, representing fifty-two U.N.-mem-ber countries from Albania to Yugoslavia, attempted to solve various international conflicts through the passage of resolutions. The Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Political Committee, Disarmament Committee, and Human Rights Committee all dealt with topics relating to their central themes; the General Assembly debated Charter Revision, U.N. Funding, and resolutions passed by all of the above committees except the Security Council and ECO-SOC; and the Ad Hoc Committee dis- cussed anything from A.I.D.S. to Godzilla movies. At the fall, 1985, session, the International Court of Justice made its first appearance as a part of the Model U.N., solving several international legal disputes. Also in the fall session, John Ferry won his first committee award as a “Superior Delegate” representing the United Kingdom in Security Council. He later received Dupo’s only “Outstanding Delegate” award for this year, in the spring session. At the same time, Kim Diel took her first “Superior Delegate” for her performance as the United Kingdom in S.C.H., and Tammy Smith, representing the Federal Republic of Germany, was “Superior Delegate” in G.A. Next year, Dupo students will represent the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Israel. Model U.N. 69 Yearbook It’s a matter of learning unfamiliar terms and writing captions worth reading. Our sponsor, Mrs. Klein, has been in charge of the yearbook for four years — four long years. As a member of the yearbook staff you must learn many unfamiliar terms such as pica ruler, dummy pages and photo cropping. You must think of captions that don’t offend anyone yet are interesting and worth reading. “Zillions” of hours are devoted to produce a decent book. It’s yours to keep! Although Traci Maloney is not on staff, she enjoys looking at the unused photos. 70 Yearbook Planning Together Drama Club Club tries to get everyone into the act. This year the Drama Club worked continuously trying to get students involved. The club was successful in putting together a talent show in November. The winners of the contest received cash prizes. The proceeds of the event were donated to the fund to restore the Statue of Liberty. Later in the year the members worked hard to prepare for the spring presentation of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses.” Drama Club Front Row: Maur-ena Jenkins. Rachael Hunsaker. Melissa Cobb. Drama Club 71 Scholar Quiz A Scholar Quiz meet consists of three contests with five-member teams from two schools. Dupo’s Scholar Quiz teams, coached by Mrs. Denise Nobbe, won five matches in the 1985-1986 season, including their first-round tournament game. Although halted in tournament play by a second-game loss to Lebanon, Dupo buzzed its way through a 261 to 157 conquest over Carlyle. Other highlights this season included a pre-destined varsity victory over rival C-town, 267-237, a 148 to 22 junior varsity jump over Marissa, and the first freshman encounter, a 129 to 20 Waterloo walkover. A Scholar Quiz meet consists of three contests, freshman, junior varsity, and varsity, with five-member teams from two schools. All five team members attempt to answer toss-up questions, worth ten points apiece, on assorted academic and or trivial topics. When one member of a team correctly answers a toss-up, his whole team receives a two- to five-part bonus question, upon which the team can confer. The team captain reads the collaborated answer, and the opposing team then has three seconds to try answering any incorrect parts. The freshman and junior varsity bouts last until time limits are expended; varsity events continue until the moderator has asked fifty questions. At the Belleville Area College district competition February 20, Dupo challenged over one hundred fifty students from Chester, Freeburg, Gibault, Governor French Academy, Highland, Lebanon, Marissa, New Athens, Red Bud, Sparta, and Waterloo. Each student competed by taking one or two 40-minute test(s) in biology, chemistry, English, graphics, math, and or physics. This year, John Ferry became the first Dupo student to win in two categories when he received fourth place in biology and fifth place in chemistry. Ed Hargrove made his T.E.A.M.S. debut with a sixth place physics score, and Tammy Smith took second place in English. Tammy’s placement enabled her to compete at the Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville regional March 17, where she won third place over approximately two hundred students from about twenty schools. Also scoring well in district testing were Deron Huck in physics and Tammy Smith in biology. Tammy Smith prepares for the stiff competition at B.A.C. Her efforts won her second place in English at the meet. Tammy was not on yearbook staff this year, but she willingly wrote many of the articles that appear in this section. T.E.A.M.S. T.E.A.M.S. 73 Student Council The fun begins each year with planning the course of action for homecoming in the fall. Due to a “gap in communications” the story of Student Council will not be told this year. However, we are pleased to report about John Ferry who was named to the Student Advisory Council to the State Board of Education. His selection for this committee of students is indeed an honor for our school. S.A.C. is an organization designed to provide student opinions to the Board on student related issues in education. This year, S.A.C. produced a survey on consolidation, linked over twenty thousand students together in a North Shore liasion network, and contacted several other states about how their Student Advisory Councils are run for comparative purposes. Getting It Together One of the major projects taken on by Student Council is planning the annual Christmas assembly held on the last day before Christmas vacation. Student Council 75 The National Honor Society was established in 1919 and is operated by the National Council of Secondary School Principals. Any accredited secondary school may apply for a charter. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to promote academic excellence. To be considered for membership in the N.H.S. students must have a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 at the end of the first semester during their junior year. This alone does not guarantee membership. Every teacher in the school has the opportunity to rate the students in other areas such as character and leadership. National Honor Society Rich Barcum signs the official registry as Keitn Zaricor looks on. New N.H.S. members are presented with a pin, certificate and card. The camp was sponsored by the University Cheerleading Association. The varsity squad, our junior varsity and varsity combined, won all blue ribbons and a spirit stick each day. The girls were later named Camp Champions. Two freshman cheerleaders also attended the camp as a separate squad. They won several ribbons and did an outstanding job. 78 Sports Championship Squads At Dupe Junior Varsity Squad Kneeling: Dawn Gray, Amber Morrison, Tracey Shelby; Standing: Sheila Jones, Rhonda Johnson, Christy Imm. Tami Urke, Stephanie Brown, Sheryl Causey; Standing: Kendra Pratt, Lisa Ferrell, Kathy Dyroff, Stacey LaCroix, Lesa Hall, Judy Karsteter. The 1985-86 Pom Pon Squad was sponsored by Stacy Furlow and Tracy Satterfield. During the summer, the squad practiced three days per week. Then, it was practice for seven days straight the week prior to attending the NCA camp in Springfield, Missouri. While at camp, the girls received 18 blue ribbons, 17 red ribbons and 10 white ribbons. The camp was a big help in preparing the squad for the new school year. The squad participated in several activities during the year. The girls marched along with the Dupo Band in the annual Soulard parade, held raffles and had a ring toss booth at the Jaycees picnic to help raise money for new uniforms. It was an enjoyable year and all of the girls hope to be a part of the fun next year. We finished the season 5-13 but lost seven games by a total of 24 points. We need to improve on shooting and continue to work hard. I’m looking forward to next year. Beck Beck Area Vocational Center provides a valuable service to students who aren’t planning to go to college, but who need the vocational training in the search for good jobs. When Beck made its decision to close at the end of the school year, it disappointed many of its promising students. The students didn’t settle for that decision and circulated a petition, citing the school’s successful job placement record. After much consideration, Beck agreed to stay open for at Tech least one more year. The new plan calls for Beck to offer only auto body, auto mechanics, child care, electronic drafting, and information processing courses next year. Tuition charges will be $892 for students in member districts, and $1025 for students in non-member districts. Several of the participating schools are ending their participation in the center, but Dupo, Red Bud, Marissa, Valmeyer and Chester are planning to continue to participate.
