President; Tim York, Vice-President. Once upon a time in the land of yesterday, There was a class without a dime, and an equal amount of say. Our critics called us bad, and said there was little hope, But it didn’t make us sad; we all knew how to cope. Together we longed to be, since we were so far apart. So then we found the key, his name was John Brillhart. With a store of untapped skill, and the will to never quit. Other classes were left standing still when we outclassed them with our skits. Together we had the spirit, together we found the drive; We yelled so all could hear it; The best was in “85.” Our junior year was here, we worked and did we sell, Without a single fear, we knew that we’d do well. The prom just had to be the best that was ever held. We were challenged to succeed and put money in the till. Some said we couldn’t do it, some said we’d never finish; But those Heavenly Precious Moments will never be diminished. While some called us thieves, and others called us crooks. We always tried to please; we returned more than we took. With the time of ending near, we give you back a man. Who gave us joys and tears, who gave us more than just a hand- He gave us two years of his busy life. He showed us someone dear, and he introduced his wife. So before we leave, and finally depart, In our hearts you’ll always be; We love you — Mr. and Mrs. John Brillhart. The 1985 Track Season Is Jeff Hudson Breaks His Dad’s Record Set In 1962 In The Disc Event 80 Sports This was a record-setting year for the D.C.H.S. track team. In the 400 meter dash Jim Williams tied DeWayne Baumgarte’s 1973 record at 51.5. Brian Mehrten’s time of 2:00.0 in the 800 meter dash broke the record set by Chuck Rice in 1967. The disc record was broken by Jeff Hudson. His throw in this event was 148’ 3l 2 The old record was set by Jeff’s father Dean in 1962. Mr. Hudson’s throw was 142’ 71 2” when he set the record 23 years earlier. In addition to individual records, three relay teams broke school records. The 3200 meter relay team (Brian Mehrtens, Jim Williams, Tim Siner, and Jim Siner) set a new record of 8:25.7. The old record was 8:27.3 set in 1984. A new record of 3:30.2 was set by the 1600 meter relay team (Dale White, Brian Mehrtens, Jim Williams and Tim Siner) breaking the 3:34.0 record set in 1984. A time of 1:34.5 was posted by the 800 meter relay team (Brian Mehrtens, Jim Williams, Dale White and Tim Siner) to break the 1983 time of 1:35.5. The six records set this year makes the 1985 track season the best ever recorded at Dupo High. Hopefully the quality of these performances will continue into the 1986 season as many of the record-setters will be returning. Jeff Mac makes it with ease. In past years the class period was spent mainly learning how to run the equipment. Now the students have been producing and running their own shows, first on cable Channel 22 and now on their own station WDHS Channel 6. The A-V teacher, Mrs. Krauss, was injured seriously in an auto accident and was not in school a good part of the first semester so the students were mor or less on their own. And as we all know, when the cat is away the mice will play and so they did. The first programs were rather primitive-quality and editing wise, but the material was quite original. As the year progressed, the programs improved (the new equipment helped). The shows include news casts by the speech students, special programming, sports highlights, and general information about community activities. Such characters as David Betterman, Frank Zik and Dr. Dupo became household words. So, tune in some Thursday evening at 7 P.M. and watch the “Can’t Handle Prime Time Players.” You’ll enjoy it! The camp was sponsored by the Universal Cheerleaders Association. The varsity squad (our J.V. and Varsity combined) won all blue ribbons and each day won a spirit stick. The squad was also overall camp champs and later advanced to Peoria in November, competed in the small schools division and qualified for the World International Championship in Chicago. There, they placed sixth out of eleven squads competing. This competition consisted of squads from thirty-five states and three Canadian provinces. Not everyone realizes how much hard work and patience it takes to be a cheerleader. All squads practice every day after school and for two months during the summer preparing for the football and basketball seasons. This year’s seniors are Varsity Captain Kristin Marlen, Robin Asbury and Deania Peters. The first full year for the Pom Pon Squad went very well. Participating at picnics to earn money for camp, the Tigerettes came home with a spirit frisbee, ten ribbons and a first place trophy. The squad was very spirited throughout the year and is hoping to make Pom Pon a big success at Dupo High. Activities 101 DRAMA CLUB Drama Club Back Row: Joe Moore. The freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams’ combined efforts produced six winning games in Dupo’s fourth year of offering this “sport.” Scholar Quiz involves two teams of five students, armed with pushbutton lights and buzzers, trying to be the first to correctly answer a ten-point toss-up question, the categories for which range from auto mechanics to zoology. Following two consecutive, correct toss-ups, answered by individual members of one team, a five-part ten-point bonus question is asked. Each team member gives his partial answer to the captain (seated in the center during the match) or to a member delegated by the captain to read the answer. This season, Dupo competed against Freeburg, Central Lebanon, Red Bud, Waterloo and Columbia. A meet scheduled against Marissa was cancelled. With Best Wishes We Salute You Over Eighty Years Of Service To Our School And Our Community Mr. Young has been teaching at Dupo a total of 31 years. In addition to being the Band Director, he teaches instrumental music in grades 4 through 12. He enjoys his relationship with students along with watching a young musician gain experience while playing his instrument. After retiring, Mr. Young plans to keep playing his trumpet and do private teaching in a studio. He doesn’t believe students have changed since he began teaching. Mr. Young said. “Students have shown more ability and freedom to perform. Parents seem to show less interest in activities their kids perform in and are difficult to talk to at times. Really kids haven’t changed that much; only parents.’’ Mr. Fred Young School's Over And Out Mrs. Wolke has been teaching a total of 24 years, 19 of which were at Dupo. Her plans for retirement include sleeping late at least once a month and getting accustomed to being with her husband day and night. She has taught a variety of English courses over the years, but she prefers to teach speech and upper level literature. Her most enjoyable experiences have been working on Diary of Anne Franke with the drama club, and taking Alesia Wilson to the State Speech Contest a few years ago. When asked if students have changed in recent years, Mrs. Wolke’s response was as follows. “Yes, they’ve changed extremely in the opposite direction as far as discipline is concerned. They often refuse direction, lack respect for their elders and feel school is a place to socialize. This doesn’t cover the entire student body but at least about one-third of them. However, they are more honest in their approach to life. In the past they did things which they would hide from their elders, whereas now they are more honest and admit to their indiscretions. All in all, I will miss the contact with the students and will have much to reminisce about during leisure time.” Mrs. Albina Wolke Mr. William Cox We’ll Miss You. We Thank You. We Wish You Well. Mr. Cox has taught at Dupo for 28 of his 32 years as a teacher. He is undecided about his future plans. Mr. Cox has enjoyed coaching and working sports. He also has enjoyed working with students and having their respect. In recent years. Mr. Cox has been teaching Jr. High Geography, High School World Geography and Drivers Education. Although he gives students a rough time in Drivers Ed., he prefers teaching it to geography. When asked if he believes students have changed since he began teaching, Mr. Cox responded. “Yes. Students have less respect for teachers; lack of discipline. Teachers hands are tied due to Board Policies.” Retiring Faculty 113 Scenes From Drama Club’s Spring This year’s spring play presented by the Drama Club was written by the world-acclaimed author, Agatha Christie. For those who are intrigued by Agatha Christie stories, The Mousetrap is one of her most spine-tingling and baffling mysteries. The play takes place in an old country guest house during a snow storm. The suspects include Giles and Mollie Ralston, the newly married couple who run the guest house. Giles is played by Bobby Whitten along with Dawn Zdroj and Laura Wood filling the role of Mollie at alternate performances. Other characters include Mrs. Boyle, a jurist with a suspicious background, who is portrayed by Deana Zdroj and Judy Karsteter at alternate performances; a very strange architect named Christopher Wren, characterized by Raymond Larson; and a retired army major who is too perfectly normal, played by Jeff McClanahan. Mike Ryan portrays Mr. Para-vicini, a foreigner whose car has supposedly overturned in a 114 Drama Club Play snowdrift. Miss Casewell, played by Diane Snellenberger and Debbie Daab at alternate performances, appears to be a bitter, hardened young woman with a mysteriously painful past. Into the midst of these suspects arrives a policeman, portrayed by Tim York. Once the characters are all assembled, murder strikes in classic Agatha Christie fashion. In order to root out the murderer an investigation proceeds, during which the backgrounds of the characters are alowly revealed to the audience. The clues led the clever listener to the murderer, but in the superb style of Agatha Christie, the playwright casts everyone as a suspect. Students began preparing for the play in their after-school time since January and worked hard to insure that the May presentation would be one of Dupo Drama Club’s best performances. Special thanks to the club’s sponsor, Mrs. Evans, and to her husband Tally who’s always there to lend a hand.
