Co-Op Janice Bailey works at P.N. Hirsch. “ ... I like the money too.” O Academics Co-Op is a good program offered to our juniors and seniors here at DCHS. A student enrolled in the co-op program only goes to school the first half of the day. Among the classes taken in the morning, they must take the co-op class. This class prepares them for working by making sure they know the basic skills for things related to having a job. In the 1981-82 school year there were about 20 students in our co-op program. They worked at such jobs as a construction worker, a teacher for deaf children, a cashier at a department store, a bagger at a grocery store, and a mechanic at a bowling alley. Co-op allows students to be exposed to “the working world” and it helps them make extra money. That extra money always comes in handy? Scott Levin, roofing a house, does his co-op job. Ron McClenahan is employed at Car-o-matic car wash in Dupo. Laura Evans works at K-Mart in Belleville. “1 like the people 1 meet.” Beth Doerr works teaching deaf children in Belleville. “I like the kids.”

Belleville Area College offered an “Early Bird Program” for top level high school courses, so that the student could get high school and college credit at the same time. This was a new area for Dupo and BAC, so many problems had to be ironed out before it was possible to get it started this year. Ms. Parnell taught the French IV class and here is what she said about it, “I made more demands and moved at a much faster pace than a regular high school course, but most students were able to adapt quickly. I feel that this advanced course is a natural extension of the travel program that was instituted by Mr. Malone, the Spanish teacher, and I, when we were hired ten years ago. Eight of the eleven students in my French IV class traveled to Europe for ten days during Easter vacation in 1980. Once the students get a feel for the language and culture of a country it makes class room learning more meaningful. It has been a great experience and I hope to continue similar courses if the interest is shown by the students.” 2 New “Apples” For Our Teachers We had an interesting addition to our Business department here at DCHS. We purchased two word-processing computers. These computers can do such things as office inventories and many educational games. Since most businesses use machines of this type today, our business students are better prepared for future jobs. Seven students have learned to program on an independent study basis. Randi Gunn and Miss Solomon demonstrate the use of the computer. Academics ll
