Good Times And Have A Good Time! Throughout The Year! 1982 El Tigre Dupo Community High School 600 Louisa Avenue Dupo, Illinois 62239 (618) 286-3214 Volume 50 Mr. Gericke has been our sponsor for all four years. He is a great organizer and really got us going. He led us to four successful Homecomings and many profitable money-raising affairs. If we were all going to reenlist in high school, I’m sure everyone would vote for Gerk to be our sponsor again! What do you think of when you think of the Seniors of ’82? You think of nuts or brains, maybe even nutbrains! Whatever you think of, it can’t be ordinary, because we aren’t ordinary. We have athletes, actors, musicians, singers, lovers, fighters, leaders, followers, comedians, fatties, skin-nies, and, believe it or not, even a few quiet people. We’ve gone from champions of four-square to champions of football. Let me return you now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. How many people remember being heartbroken when Kandi Massie fell off the monkey bars and broke her arm? Were we heartbroken over her broken arm? No! They took down the monkey bars!!! Can you remember when we took first, not second place, in float our freshman year? Next time you get a chance look back at one of your old yearbooks. It doesn’t seem like that long ago, but we really change more through junior high and high school than any other time in our lives. Now we’re going to graduate and really start some successful lives. Some not as much as others, but each in his own way! CONGRATULATIONS!! WE MADE IT!! For 6 years Lillian Campbell has worked as a custodian. Gene Poettgen has spent the last 12 years as a custodian at DCHS. Cecilia Brooks has been a custodian here at DCHS for 8 years. 8 Academics Back: Shirley Rose, Betty DeRousse, Thelma Bush. Front: Dixie Arras, Tina Weller. Margaret Arras. Every school day they cook nutritious meals for the students and faculty. Ray Sequin, Harold Mclver, Anna Wilson, Sue Miller, Bert Danback, Wanda Flowers, Pat Edwards, and Bert Tolbird. They drive in all kinds of weather to get our students to school safely. Academics 9 Co-Op Janice Bailey works at P.N. Hirsch. “ ... I like the money too.” O Academics Co-Op is a good program offered to our juniors and seniors here at DCHS. A student enrolled in the co-op program only goes to school the first half of the day. Among the classes taken in the morning, they must take the co-op class. This class prepares them for working by making sure they know the basic skills for things related to having a job. In the 1981-82 school year there were about 20 students in our co-op program. They worked at such jobs as a construction worker, a teacher for deaf children, a cashier at a department store, a bagger at a grocery store, and a mechanic at a bowling alley. Co-op allows students to be exposed to “the working world” and it helps them make extra money. That extra money always comes in handy? Scott Levin, roofing a house, does his co-op job. Ron McClenahan is employed at Car-o-matic car wash in Dupo. Laura Evans works at K-Mart in Belleville. “1 like the people 1 meet.” Beth Doerr works teaching deaf children in Belleville. “I like the kids.” French IV The students in the French IV class. Back: Miss Parnell. Middle: Mitzi Miller. Lisa Buatte, JoAnne Hotto, Mike Arthur. Front: Rahdi Gunn, Ruth Ann Bertram, Lisa Williams, Traci Woods, Carol Stanberry, Cyndi Walsh, and Cheryl Gilliam. Belleville Area College offered an “Early Bird Program” for top level high school courses, so that the student could get high school and college credit at the same time. This was a new area for Dupo and BAC, so many problems had to be ironed out before it was possible to get it started this year. Ms. Parnell taught the French IV class and here is what she said about it, “I made more demands and moved at a much faster pace than a regular high school course, but most students were able to adapt quickly. I feel that this advanced course is a natural extension of the travel program that was instituted by Mr. Malone, the Spanish teacher, and I, when we were hired ten years ago. Eight of the eleven students in my French IV class traveled to Europe for ten days during Easter vacation in 1980. Once the students get a feel for the language and culture of a country it makes class room learning more meaningful. It has been a great experience and I hope to continue similar courses if the interest is shown by the students.” 2 New “Apples” For Our Teachers We had an interesting addition to our Business department here at DCHS. We purchased two word-processing computers. These computers can do such things as office inventories and many educational games. Since most businesses use machines of this type today, our business students are better prepared for future jobs. Seven students have learned to program on an independent study basis. Randi Gunn and Miss Solomon demonstrate the use of the computer. Academics ll Beck Our high school offers a program for our Juniors and Seniors. If a Junior or Senior student chooses he may attend Beck Area Vocational School half of each school day for 2 credits each year. “I like going to Beck because it breaks the monotony of six straight classes a day,” said Junior Melissa Schanuel. There the students can choose from a variety of classes in which they get hands-on-training. There are a large number of our Juniors and Seniors who attend Beck and they seem to get a lot out of the training. It is an excellent way for our students to get an education. Corey and Dave attend the Electronics (TV and Radio Repair) class. Here they are changing the tubes on a portable TV. Kim works hard trying to improve skills to become a good secretary. John and Gene learn how to weld using the right safety equipment. 12 Academics Ed smiles at a plant. Terry feeds his plant with the proper nutrients and water. Barbie looks sad because one of her plants just died. Academics 13 Kathy perfects her I typing skills so she can get a good job after she graduates. Open House Open House for the junior and senior high school was held on October 27, 1981. By school board policy it must be held before the end of the first nine weeks’ grading period. Most of the program took place in the gym, with performances by the high school band and chorus. After the music the parents, students, and teachers mingled and chatted. As always very few parents of high school students attended. One parent who was asked why she didn’t attend said, “I didn’t know anything about it.” You don’t suppose some students keep it a secret, do you? I wonder what Matt said to get everyone's attention? Lisa, her mother, and Mr. Merkley talk about the science class activities. 4 Academics Ms. Nowell discusses Shelley’s accomplishments with her mom. “Wow! This really sounds good!” Academics 15 Celebrate . . . Mr. Gericke, we feel that you have proven to us what real dedication is all about. The Class of ’82 has experienced the ups and downs of high school, but with your help we have always come out on top. You have always taught us to take pride in our class, and now, as Seniors, we look back over the past four years with that pride and sense of accomplishment that will be carried by every person throughout their lives. We also feel that your wife Nadine has contributed greatly in the activities of our class, and we would like to give our many thanks to both of you for all your work. They were accompanied by their teachers and several energetic parents. The day began with a tour of Lincoln’s Home and the adjacent museum. After lunch on the bus, the group was given a conducted tour of the State Capitol. This was followed by a guided tour of the Governor’s Mansion. Then, it was on the road again for the drive to New Salem State Park. Here, the students were allowed to walk around the park at their leisure. Sports o O ' Coach Kelly Under the leadership of Coach Kim Kelly, the Dupo Tiger varsity volleyball team spiked its way to the .500 mark with a hard won 9-9 record, 5-8 in conference play. The Tigers looked strong in their first game against Valmeyer, as they won easily in two straight games. Other highlights of the season included double victories over Waterloo and Venice, both of which were won in two straight games. The district play-offs brought an end to Dupo’s season as Gibault beat the Tigers in a very close contest. Coach Kelly commented that the varsity squad was a big improvement over last year’s team. She also liked the fact that the team beat Red Bud for the first time ever! Seniors: Becky Branson, Beth Doerr, Lisa Williams, Ruth Ann Bertram, and Pam Lombardo. Dupo players work hard. It’s been three long years since the mighty Dupo Tiger football team has gone to the state playoffs. But, this year, the Tigers captured their fourth Quad County Conference championship and managed to reach the Illinois state semi-finals. The Tigers began their season with three consecutive losses to Orchard Farm, Columbia, and Triad, and the season looked as though it could be a dismal one. Then, suddenly, the team began a tremendous comeback, winning five games in a row, all of them in conference. The most important of these games may have been the 7-0 shut-out of Assumption. This game was also a much sweeter victory than the others, considering the fact that Assumption has prevented us from going to state in the two previous years. After defeating Freeburg, the conference championship was ours. Gillespie was the first playoff opponent of the Tigers. Dupo won the defensive struggle 14-12, qualifying for the quarter-finals. They traveled to Carterville and won another defensive struggle 15-8. The semi-final game was next, and a tough Biggsville Union team awaited the mighty Tigers. Biggsville came away with the victory 38-0 in the bitter cold of upstate Illinois. As far as individual performances go, J.D. Groves finished the season with an incredible 14 touchdowns and also led the team in rushing. Jim Jarvis was among the area leaders in passing with 6 touchdown strikes and 937 yards. Coach Gary Mauser and the team should look back and feel very proud of their 1981 season. They might also be looking ahead to next year and a possible state championship. The two opponents that did beat the sophomores won by a total of only three points. In the six games the Tigers scored 89 points and allowed their opponents only 43 points. One player said, “We had a pretty good season over all. We had a couple of tough losses — real nailbiters.” The freshman Tigers had a perfect season winning five games and losing none. They finished second in the Belleville West Jamboree and first in the Dupo Jamboree. Coach Bright and Coach Gericke along with their players should feel proud of their successful seasons. 82 Sports Freshmen Have Perfect Season! The team is showing signs of becoming a good solid varsity squad. Captain Krista Sloan helped lead the team to a record of 9-7. Sloan and Kim Edwards, both sophomores, played an outstanding season. They are expected to return to varsity next year. Others who played on the J.V. squad were Jill Kelling and Julie Keys, juniors; Patty Mallett, Gina Tolbird, Christine Wilson, sophomores; and Karen Ferry and Diane Snellenberger; freshmen. The freshmen team also played well. At the beginning of the season, the girls tried hard, and learned fast. By mid-season, they were playing their best. They played together, worked together, learned together, and made it a fun season. 85 Sports Varsity Cagers Finish Last Back: Coach Harres, Jim Jarvis, Mike Long, Terry Baumgarte, Robin Wilson, Kenny Hunt, Coach Gericke. Despite the disappointing season, there were some highlights. Jeff Harres, Jim Jarvis, and Kenny Hunt all had game averages in double figures. Jarvis led the team in total points, 305, with Harres close behind with 303. According to one team member, the team played much better near the end of the season. They seemed to be much more together. Robin Wilson, who was one of only two starters to play in all twenty-five games, played very effectively in the last half of the season. The Tigers lost 85-56 to Assumption in the first round of the regional tourney, here in Dupo, to end their season. Sports 87 Seniors: Mitzi Miller, Becky Branson, Vanesa Hazel, and Beth Doerr. This is probably due to the fact that the Lady Tigers are quickly becoming an area power for small schools. The team compiled an 11-10 record this season, winning the Dupo Invitational Tourney and finishing third in the Sparta Tourney. Senior Mitzi Miller averaged 11.3 points per game and was selected for the 1982 News-Democrat All-Area girls’ basketball team on the first Class A squad. “She was pretty consistent,” said Coach Sheets. “She didn’t hit highs and lows. You could depend on her to have a fairly good game every game.” Junior Kelly Edwards was selected for the Class A honorable mention. After beating Triad in the first round of the regionals, the Lady Tigers ended their season with a loss to Madison. The boys JV basketball team of 1981-82 finished their season with a dismal record of 1-17. “The team was inexperienced,” said Coach Jim Harres. “They should win more games next year.” One bright spot in the otherwise disappointing season was the emergence of Mike Long, who led the team in scoring and rebounds. The boys’ freshman basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Mauser, finished with a record of 4-9. Finishing with a record of 6-5, the JV girls’ basketball team started well, but then went downhill. This was probably due to the promotion of some starters to varsity and an injury to starter Gina Tolbird. The varsity Tiger baseball season of 1982 got off to a slow start. Heavy snows and rain forced the rescheduling of seven games. Umpire Ron Colyer commented that one snow game was the “Craziest game I ever umped.” Coach Rehg led the Tigers to a 9-11 season. They won their first regional game against Assumption but lost their season-ending second game to Freeburg. Scott Tilley and Jeff Harres were elected to the second team all conference and Todd Clasquin gained an honorable mention on the all conference team. Senior Vernon Ferry had the highest batting average at .367. The J.V. squad, coached by Jim Harres, had a very successful season with a record of 8-2. 92 Sports Softball Team Wins Regionals! With only three seniors, the team was very young; starting one freshman, four sophomores, and one junior. Coach Gericke, in his second year as coach, claims that the team has improved 100%. He went on to say that the team had lots of talent and were beginning to do more things on instinct. Freeburg, and Trico to win the Freeburg Regionals and advance to the sectionals. Freshman Kenny Hunt set a new school and Cahokia Conference record in the 200 meter. Kenny’s time of 22.4 broke the 1972 record of 22.8 held by Donel Johnson. The 400 and 800 meter relay team, which features Mike Jerashen, Eric Hofstetter, Mark Causey, and Kenny Hunt, finished second in the 400 meter and first in the 800 meter at the conference meet. They write on a variety of subjects including movie reviews, school sports, current news around the world, write-ups on the beginning of the seasons and current holidays. The paper is published monthly and costs 15c to buy. Ms. Parnell has been the staff advisor for Tiger Tales for 10 years. She puts in many hours of hard work organizing it. Speech Contest is a unique organization in which students compete with students from different schools in many areas of speaking; prose, radio broadcast and the like. Our speech contest students participated in three contest this year at O’Fallon, Waterloo, and Belleville West. Unfortunately, they didn’t place in anything, but our participants feel it was a valuable experience. Much luck to them in future years because they work hard at what they do. Mrs. Wolke is the sponsor for Speech Contest. She works many hours to prepare our students so they can do their best. Our local VFW Post sponsored an essay contest. The theme was “Building America Together.” Mary Wuerffel entered and won first place in Dupo. A recording of her speech was sent further to participate with other schools, but she didn’t place. She received a trophy and $25 bond from our VFW for her efforts. Act ivities 101 Drama Club Drama Club presented two plays this year, “Appointment with Death” on Dec. 10-11, and “Meet Me in St. Louis” on May 1-2. To present a successful play it takes not only talented actors and actresses. There are many behind-the-scenes people who do such things as set construction, lighting, and stage managing. These people are never really noticed for all their hard work; the actors and ac- tresses receive all the praise. The next time you see a play remember it took a lot more than the people you see acting to put it on. Mrs. Evans is the sponsor of Drama Club. She stays many hours after school preparing for the plays. Also she plans numerous field trips the club members can benefit from. Without her hard work and dedication our plays could not be so successful. Terry Eschmaqn, Bill Gooch. Randy Blakely, Don Reichert, Fred Davenport, Gary Turner. She spends many hours of her time with this group. Activities 103 Kelly Williams, treasurer Lisa Kish, points chairman Pam Yuengel, secretary Leslie Cort, vice-president Lynn Poettgen, president Leslie Cort was chosen as Vice-President of the Kaskaskia District Student Council. She is currently a junior and has been active in Student Council for 3 years. Student Council Student Council is one of the most active organizations in school. It is very involved in many projects to help and improve our school. They organize important things in our school but the one that is most appreciated and fun is Homecoming. A few of the other things they did were plan assemblies, sell calenders, collect Mr. Pibb lids and hold a few co-recs. Another project they carried out is a student exchange with other schools. This gives the kids a chance to see how other Student Councils are run. Student Council is active in the district organization. The members attended a workshop at Belleville East and the annual district convention at Collinsville. Leslie Cort was elected Vice-President on the district executive board. They also are active at the state level. Mr. Thomas took eight students to the State Convention in Chicago. This is his 13th year as the sponsor and the students give him a good deal of credit for the success of the group. He is assisted by Mrs. McDannold who uses her artistic talents to help the students make posters, decorate for the homecoming dance, and deve-lope leadership capabilitites. 104 Activities Back: Fred Davenport, Vernon Ferry, Gary Turner, Don Reichert, Randy Blakely, David Walster, Kevin Bush, Jim I hompson, David McFarland, Jeff Hudson, Jeff McClanahan. Activities 105 Band Our DCHS band participated in many activities, including the following: marching in Carbondale’s Homecoming Parade in October, playing for Open House, also in October, and participating in the County Music Festival in Cahokia in March. They also played at football and basketball games. They cooperated with the chorus presenting a Christmas concert. Mr. Fred Young has directed the band and taught elementary instrumental music in the district for 28 years. The band anxiously anticipated the delivery of their new uniforms all through football season. Fi- nally, about a week before the last game two gigantic boxes arrived. Mr. Young and the band members pounced eagerly upon the boxes and discovered to their dismay that they contained only the plumed hats. When the rest of the uniforms arrived in December the marching season was over and so the plumed hats and maroon jackets are moth-balled until next season. However, the white shirt and maroon vest ensembles were well broken in at basketball games, county music festival, and spring concert. They also received a blue superior ribbon for their dance routine “Celeration”. This category was optional and several squads entered. The Varsity squad was also one of five squads nominated for district championships. Dupo was also given a very special award called the “Key to Spirit” award. This award is given to only one squad and is voted on by all the other squads. The freshmen squad did well also. They received a spirit stick, a blue superior, two outstanding, and one excellent ribbon. Randee, Kathy, and Cyndi, Seniors, were cheerleaders all four years of high school. Each student received a certificate for their participation and efforts. New members Randee Gunn and Leslie Court are welcomed by Ginger Crook into National Honor Society. ■ Activities 111 Yearbook Staff Our yearbook staff works many hours to produce a yearbook which includes all memories of the past school year. At the beginning of the year there is usually a good sized staff but as the work piles up students tend to quit. The ones that do stay, though, work many hours on writing copy, drawing art work, drawing up lay-outs and coming up with clever eye-catching ideas to produce the best yearbook they possibly can. Mrs. Ear-hart has been our sponsor for the past six years. She also, has put in many hours working to make a good yearbook. Our staff also participates in workshops that they can benefit from. The Dupo Senior High Chorus was very fortunate this year to be expanded into two choirs: one that meets during regular school hours and one that meets twice a week after school. The first performance of these combined choruses was for Open House in October. Along with the new and bigger personnel, the senior high chorus also got a new look with matching choral outfits. The girls selected maroon dresses and the boys selected black pants with white sweaters. In November, a selected few students were chosen to sing in the District VI Illinois Music Educators Association Festival in Edwardsville. Dupo students were represented in both choirs at the festival. December brought our traditional Christmas program with the high school band and junior high chorus. March was a very busy month for the high school chorus with the solo and ensemble vocal contest in Freeburg. The students did extremely well bringing home 24 first place awards and four second place. March was also the month for the St. Clair County Music Festival in Cahokia and auditions for the spring Musical. In the third week of May, the high school musical production of “Broadway Extravaganza” was presented after three months of long rehearsals and sore muscles. The musical was a song and dance review of selected numbers from 8 Broadway shows. The same week of May also brought two other choral performances: the annual Fine Arts Festival and Baccalaureate. A special and fond farewell to our graduating seniors: Sandy Hollis, Cindy Sullivan, Michelle Valleroy. Activities, In School Activities DCHS offers a change of pace for the students every Wednesday morning from 10:22-11:06. A variety of activities are offered from motorcycles to ceramics. Every teacher is required to offer an activity and every student is required to participate in one. At the semester a student can transfer to a different activity if he wishes. Mike Langille, in Mr. Gericke’s basketball activity, shoots a great shot. Robin Kibbler in Ms. Hoffmeister's ceramics class works on her project. Ricky Brewer and Ron Haney fix the gears of a motorcycle in Mr. Malone’s activity. 114 Activities Lori Foutch seems to be enjoying Mrs. Sullivan’s creative needlecraft class. Jeff Dossett looks like he’s winning the card game in Ms. Nowell’s activity Games People Play. Shelley Bird, Diana Carroll, Susan Bivins, Diane Odehnal, Tracy Burris, Connie Marshall, and Shari Barton in Miss King’s vocal ensemble. Shana Miller, Michelle Hamann, Sherri Gummersheimer, Melissa Mas- sie, and Kathy Drury are also in Games People Play. Bill Gooch works in Indian Archaeology activity offered by Ms. Raker and Mrs. Evans. Let’s Celebrate The traditional Christmas concert presented by the music department of Dupo Senior High School was held on December 17, 1981. A candlelight processional opened the program with band and chorus performing a medley of familiar carols. The junior high chorus joined the high school chorus and high school concert band in presenting special Christmas selections. The high school stage band also performed in the program with a few non-traditional numbers. Two special girls’ ensembles performed in the concert: a high school quintet with Sandy Hollis, Cindy Sullivan, Michelle Valleroy, Deana Hudson, and Debbie Odehnal and a junior high octet with Melissa Cole, Pam Honey, Judy Karsteter, Dawna Lee, Deana Zdroj, Donna Odehnal, Patsy Snellenberger, and Janelle Sudmeier. I went on about my daily routine and then around noon I heard it — snow. The professional college graduate “meteorologists,” not weathermen, said, “Oh, around four inches.” Then around 7:00 it started. I expected it would snow enough to get a good party going on the levee and maybe hustle a few bucks off some bow-legged old ladies. But no. Dave Murray, you fool, we got our four inches and about thirteen more. I was stranded in my home for four days. I ran out of “Body Buddies,” bread, milk, beer, peanuts, and worst of all my T.V. Guide became drastically outdated. My phone didn’t work, the bow-legged old ladies bought snow blowers, and my brother sent me a postcard from Florida! If all that sounds bad there were a few good things about 19 inches of snow. Probably the best thing that comes to mind is not going to school. Not having to sit through hours of WW1, not having to eat that minimum daily requirement of creamed bread, and most of all not having to get out of bed at 6:30 in the morning when your body says noon. Did you make a snowman? I didn’t see my girlfriend for such a long time I built a snow girl and read Elizabeth Barret Browning’s best works to it. It melted. I also did such exciting things as sweep the roof, drink hot chocolate, and watch my neighbor with the 4-wheel drive go to the grocery store for a pack of gum. I would have given my best Atari cartridge for a ride to the store. All in all, it was a pleasant vacation. P.S. I hope you get fired, Dave! 122 Highlights Celebration Broadway Extra “Broadway Extravaganza” reviewed America’s finest musical comedies of the past years. The musical started with “My Fair Lady” a musical set in England during the 1880’s. They sang: “On the Street Where You Live, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, With a Little Bit of Luck, I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face, and I Could Have Danced All Night.” Next came the 1920’s with “No, No, Nanette.” The songs performed were: “Tea for Two and By the Sea.” In the 1930’s came “Annie” with the songs: “Maybe, It’s A Hard Knock Life, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile and Tomorrow.” Then came the musical of two parallel love stories, “South Pacific.” The songs were: “Bali Hai, A Wonderful Guy, Younger Than Springtime, There Is Nothing Like a Dame, This Nearly Was Mine, and Some Enchanted Evening.” Then it was time for the favorite from the 1950’s “Grease” with songs such as: “Grease, Summer Nights, Sincerely, We Go Together and You’re the One That I Want.” The 1960’s was represented with “Hair.” Aquarius Let the Sun Shine In was the only song from this particular musical. From “A Chorus Line” the singers and dancers did: “I Hope I Get It, At the Ballet, One, and What I Did For Love.” Last but not least was a modern musical called “Fame.” In “Fame” were such songs as: “Fame, Out Here On My Own, and I Sing the Body Electric.” The cast members were: Rusty Barnett, Shelley Bird, Leesa Bivins, Susan Bivins, Sharon Bryant, Connie Crippen, Debbie Daab, Anita Gordon, Alesia Griffin, Lisa Harley, Chip Higgerson, Sandy Hollis, Deana Hudson, Rhonda Hubbard, Jim Jarvis, Kelly Kujawa, Amy Lovell, Julie Maier, Kim McClanahan, DeeAnn Meyers, Deanna Mosbacker, Dawn Peinetti, Chris Ruiz, Diane Snellenberger, Mark Stanberry, Vanessa Stoner, Jim Thompson, Michelle Valleroy. This is a rare play which captures a particular moment in the lives of some real and quite wonderful young people. What makes this play so exceptional is not only that it does this so beautifully, but that it is done with fun, excitement, and some broad comedy scenes that often stop the show with laughter! There are four attractive sisters all blazing with excitement over the wonderful World’s Fair that is about to open right there in St. Louis. The girls are also in a state about the love life of their only brother whom they suspect of ditching his sweet hometown girl for a snob from the East. In the midst of the sister’s humorous romance Father finally breaks in with his announcement that he has been offered a better job in New York! This will mean leaving their home in St. Louis and missing the Fair! At this, the girls unite for action. Although their strategy almost lands the family in jail, they have been determined to persist in their battle to stay where they have been so happy. In a dramatic reversal, they finally win through to a solution that not only gets Father the better job right there in St. Louis, but also straightens out the romantic complications. Appointment With On December 12 and 13 the drama club presented Agatha Christie’s “Appointment with Death.” When the curtain opened a strangely assorted group of sightseeing travelers was seated at a Jerusalem hotel. There was Lady Westholme and her companion, Sarah Queen, a sophisticated American and a pugnacious, happy-go-lucky Englishman, Mr. Higgs. Also in the group was Mrs. Boynton, a domineering elderly invalid American and her four young stepchildren whose devotion to her actually masks enough hatred to murder her. So, too, Sarah could easily kill her since Sarah’s affection for Raymond Boyton was being obstructed by the old lady. When Mrs. Boynton was found dead while the group was visiting the ancient ruins of Petra, they were all suspected of having committed the murder, even though she was ill enough to have died a natural death. Just when the tension became unbearable, the necessary evidence was discovered and Mrs. Boynton’s devilish plan to possess and torment her children in death as in life is revealed. In some cases these crazy dress up days bring out the true personalities of some of our students that have been hidden behind their everyday normal blue jeans. On Monday everyone dressed in their finest threads. I didn’t realize we had so many good looking students. When a casual visitor came to school on Tuesday he thought he had taken a wrong turn or something and was in Rome. All day white sheets flashed down the halls, who knows where the students were. Wouldn’t you know we had a fire drill that day! All of our togas were assembled daintily in front of the school for all the passersby to see. What do they know criticizing our attire. We look different if nothing else. Wednesday was pop’em, crun-ch’em, whip’em, chomp’em day. We all enjoyed breaking the no-candy-in-class rule for a day. The way our students were dressed on Thursday for nerd day did bring out some true personalities. Some people will never look right in blue jeans ever again. On Friday everyone dressed in maroon and white in honor of the great Dupo Tigers. This year wasn’t any specific day for wearing our class hats like in the past. In spirit, they were decorated really flashy and worn all week. Hey fox! Don’t be shy. It’s all mine. 132 Highlights This is a Levis action suit. Highlights 135 This year our students worked many faithful hours on their floats in hope that their float would win. To have a float be successful you need sponsors that help you get organized, kids that have the talent to build the certain features, kids to decide how to decorate it, and a lot of industrious hands to get the float pomped at the last minute before the parade. Without each of these a float cannot be a winner. Monday the students worked from 3 to 6; Tuesday from 3 to 8; Wednesday from 3 to 6; Thursday from 3 to 8; and Friday from 3 until the parade began. Even though there is only one winner, the other 3 classes have fun, too. Through all the chicken wire, pomps, and sore fingers from pomping, the students get to know each other a little better and enjoy working together. “Freshman!” “Sophomores!” “Juniors!” “Seniors!” were some of the cheers that were heard this year at the annual bonfire. The cheerleaders led their classes in roaring in hope of winning the loud-mouth award. Each class had the honor of throwing a dummy into the bonfire. No, not human dummies! Though it would be tempting to throw a few certain people in! The Dupo Fire Department was present to build the fire and for safety reasons. 136 Highlights It’s Time To Come Pomp, Pomp, Pomp, Pomp, etc. Seniors show spirit. Let me think. I said stand up! Friday, October 9, the whistle blew. The band started playing and the crowd yelling to give the Tigers spirit. Five minutes later oo-oo-oo-out came the team full of energy. They were ready to take on the Red Bud Musketeers. The coaches began to wonder how tough the Tigers really were. At half time, the score in the Tigers favor, the opposing team jogged into the locker rooms for more evil plays. The fans hurried over to the Jr. Committee room for more hot chocolate and coffee to keep them warm inside and out. The Homecoming candidates hopped on top of their fancy cars and drove around the track to show everybody their pretty faces. Then the buzzer rang. Out ran the Musketeers after the Tigers. Everyone sat on the edge of their seats in suspense of who would win. 5-4-3-2-1-buzz! The game was over; the Tigers won 34 to 12. Isn’t this their best shot? Nice quiet “chats” at halftime. A person representing each class was wrapped in white paper and frosted with whipped cream and shaving cream. The freshmen built the winning model with Jeff Hudson as the human frame. As a new event one student described this experience as, “It was different, interesting, and fun.” The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams tried to outshoot each other. While Mr. Gericke and Miss Sheets waited for the outcome, they shivered in their raincoats. Finally they were both doused with buckets of confetti. With all the hoop-de-doo there was still one incident no one will ever forget-the toppling of the piano as it was being pushed into position for the chorus to sing. 144 Highlights Celebrate A Celebration To Last Good Times And Have A Good Time!
