HISTORY OF ’79 We walked in that first day four years ago, scared, wide-eyed, and innocent. We walk out four years later, confident, mature, and worldly. We are the class of ’79. As freshmen we were not only scared but we were also broke. Our newly appointed sponsor, Ms. Rebecca Robbins, bravely agreed to a car wash to raise funds. She soon learned where that kind of bravery could get her. More water was used on the people, including Ms. Robbins, than the cars, but our car wash was a success and gave us the funds we needed to get rolling at DCHS. As sophomores we were no longer the lowest in class ranks. In order to compensate for our downfalls in our freshman year, we began to dig in and work our sophomore year. Homecoming was our first target. We won float, theme, ticket sales, and second in skit. When all the points were totaled, we had won the all-school trophy. Our class had begun to find its legs, and a little of our bright-eyed innocence had begun to wear off. 6

The other part of management includes the bosses — and their secretaries. These people keep the records straight and the discipline level to a controllable chaos. Thanks to management new programs are instituted and improvements are made throughout the school system. MANAGEMENT, etc. The board members, the bosses, and the secretaries keep the business of the district and the education of the students linked for an efficient learning program. 5

As juniors we were upperclassmen and starting to feel our responsibilities as leaders. Jumping in with enthusiasm, we found a Junior Committee room with an accumulation of dust and a grimy popcorn machine. We weren't sure if Ms. Robbins was going to faint first or cry. She pulled herself together and we attacked the problem with zeal. Our guys brought glory to our class through athletics. The football team went to the state quarterfinals, losing by only one touchdown in overtime. We won second in Homecoming and the girls' volleyball team won the district championship for the first time. As our junior year drew to a close we began to brace ourselves for the Junior-Senior Prom, “Fantasia.” We turned our dull, barren gym into a world of fantasy with frogs, mushrooms, flowers, and a big castle. As seniors we were handed the greatest leadership responsibility ever. We started the year with a bang by winning our second allschool trophy for Homecoming. Our football team went to state playoffs for the third time in our four years. Many of our guys were again named all-conference but Scott Haberl went one step further and was named all-state. We sent a delegation representing the U.S. to the McKendree Model U.N. and out of 50 delegations were selected in the top five. Several class members received special honors. We are the first class in twenty-one years to have a National Merit Finalist: Brian Stewart. We will continue to grow in maturity as we pass one more milestone. We are the class of '79. 7
