DUPO COMMUNITY w HIGH SCHOQJ- EL-TIGRE 1978 - 1979 Dear Amelia (Mrs. Earhart), This is our final notice: as of this letter we are all resigning from the 1979 El Tigre staff. We must admit it was quite an experience working with you: the effects were mental exhaustion, terminal cases of mushy brains, and many sets of slightly deafened ears (to avoid hearing your sweet voice chastising us). We wanted you to think we knocked ourselves out to produce a tremendous yearbook, but actually we just wanted to see the pictures before anyone else. Yes. Amelia, the truth comes out and now that the end is here, we leave you (some permanently, some until only next year) to ponder our great wisdom and courage in becoming avid members of the yearbook staff. Cordially, The 1979 El Tigre Staff HIGHLIGHTS 8 SPORTS 32 ACTIVITIES 54 PEOPLE 72 FACULTY 72 SENIORS 76 JUNIORS 106 SOPHOMORES 112 FRESHMEN 118 JR. HIGH 124 Many years from now, In places far away, You'll look back on me And with a sigh you’ll say: Remember when Spring Thing was here, And David stuffed his face, Remember the class elections, A tough and daring race. Remember when Homecoming was here, The two 'wild and crazy guys,' Remember all the fun parties, All the jokes and lies. Remember the good times, Forget the bad. All the sweet memories, Of all the fun we had.” MANAGEMENT, etc. President Morris Morrow. Secretary Bob Beck, and Vice President David Hamm. Morris Morrow David Hamm Doris Williams Tom Pulcher Bob Beck Virgil Gummers heimer Bill Stanberry Management, etc. is the best way to describe the administrators. The men and women that make up the administrating end of school are devoted to one cause: to make the school a progressive, efficient learning center. The board members, elected by the town, hold regular meetings to keep up with the ever-changing needs of the students and teachers. Their duties are numerous and important. 4 The other part of management includes the bosses — and their secretaries. These people keep the records straight and the discipline level to a controllable chaos. Thanks to management new programs are instituted and improvements are made throughout the school system. MANAGEMENT, etc. The board members, the bosses, and the secretaries keep the business of the district and the education of the students linked for an efficient learning program. 5 HISTORY OF ’79 We walked in that first day four years ago, scared, wide-eyed, and innocent. We walk out four years later, confident, mature, and worldly. We are the class of ’79. As freshmen we were not only scared but we were also broke. Our newly appointed sponsor, Ms. Rebecca Robbins, bravely agreed to a car wash to raise funds. She soon learned where that kind of bravery could get her. More water was used on the people, including Ms. Robbins, than the cars, but our car wash was a success and gave us the funds we needed to get rolling at DCHS. As sophomores we were no longer the lowest in class ranks. In order to compensate for our downfalls in our freshman year, we began to dig in and work our sophomore year. Homecoming was our first target. We won float, theme, ticket sales, and second in skit. When all the points were totaled, we had won the all-school trophy. Our class had begun to find its legs, and a little of our bright-eyed innocence had begun to wear off. 6 As juniors we were upperclassmen and starting to feel our responsibilities as leaders. Jumping in with enthusiasm, we found a Junior Committee room with an accumulation of dust and a grimy popcorn machine. We weren't sure if Ms. Robbins was going to faint first or cry. She pulled herself together and we attacked the problem with zeal. Our guys brought glory to our class through athletics. The football team went to the state quarterfinals, losing by only one touchdown in overtime. We won second in Homecoming and the girls' volleyball team won the district championship for the first time. As our junior year drew to a close we began to brace ourselves for the Junior-Senior Prom, “Fantasia.” We turned our dull, barren gym into a world of fantasy with frogs, mushrooms, flowers, and a big castle. As seniors we were handed the greatest leadership responsibility ever. We started the year with a bang by winning our second allschool trophy for Homecoming. Our football team went to state playoffs for the third time in our four years. Many of our guys were again named all-conference but Scott Haberl went one step further and was named all-state. We sent a delegation representing the U.S. to the McKendree Model U.N. and out of 50 delegations were selected in the top five. Several class members received special honors. We are the first class in twenty-one years to have a National Merit Finalist: Brian Stewart. We will continue to grow in maturity as we pass one more milestone. We are the class of '79. 7 The Junior-Senior Prom evolved around the theme Dreamboat Annie, a popular song by the rock group, Heart. The dance of '79 was truly a “ship of dreams” for the prom court, which consisted of juniors selected by the class and the queen, Diana Odehnal, who was chosen by the senior class. 1BH The 1977 Queen Beth Anderson was escorted by Mike Kelly. The attendants are: Teri Conley, escorted by Brian Nobbe; Lori Dell, escorted by Eric Snyder: Lois McGarry, escorted by Nick Hebei: Melissa Nolte. escorted by Kevin Miller: Janet Tilton, escorted by Marc Dell: Lisa Wittenbrink. escorted by Joe Feltmeyer; and QUEEN Diane Odehnal, escorted by John Wynn. «Mi 9 The dreamboat theme was carried out in the decorations, a soft blend of pastel pinks, blues, and greens. Murals of quiet forests and a moonlit river in which a paddlewheel boat was adrift, were only outdone by an enchanted pier leading into the loveliness of an old Southern plantation. The band, Twilight, eased and pleased dancers and listeners by mixing pop and rock with the aid of two female vocalists. A crowd of townspeople visited the prom to view the Coronation. The bells of the dance glided through graceful bows with their escorts beside them. They were followed by the ring bearer and flower girl, who charmed the crowd with their innocence, Jodi Keys and Justin Spillman. 11 12 Snow Ball ’79 was a spectacular sensation of imagination, sound, light, and color. Upon entering, glints of Fire and Ice caught and held you in its realms. Others, too were caught up in the aura, but none so much as the Snow Ball Court. The retiring queen, Polly Gillan escorted by Mike Edwards, began the Coronation. Becky McQueen, escorted by Terry Baumgarte, served as Snow Princess. The attendants in the order they came were Amie Baldwin escorted by Mike Kelly, Rene Barlow escorted by Dwayne Baumgarte, Lori Bivins escorted by Randy Lady-man, Brenda Koch escorted by Danny Snel-lenberger, Angie Macke escorted by Guy Dopmeyer, and Carla Sudberry escorted by Mark Edwards. Carla Sudberry was announced Queen. The crown was given to her and she proceeded to end the coronation with the queen's dance. 13 January 13. 1979 was the date for the second annual Snow Ball. The night was blustery cold but the attendance was great. The decorations carried out the theme. Fire and Ice quite effectively in the sparkling tones of Ice and the glowing hues of Fire. In contrast to the dark of the gym. the frozen blaze of the backdrop, the bright spots upon the attendants, and the warm atmosphere inside the gym. the snowy evening proved enjoyable. The Snow Ball was sponsored by Student Council on behalf of the Basketball teams The popularity of Winter Dances seems to grow and interest increases with each year 15 WE’RE ALL IN HOMECOMING TOGETHER In ’78 we worked and played together dreaming, scheming, plotting, planning, building and finally putting all the ingredients together to form a magical Homecoming potion. It was the year of Maroon Magic, when the students shared feelings of pride and excitement carrying on traditions and starting them. Theme week went as follows: MONDAY was Dress Up Day and everyone got a chance to prove his or her flair for fashion. TUESDAY was Top'em Day and hat styles ranged from low-riders to tophats. WEDNESDAY was Tigers Are Best Over-all Day. Everyone wore over-alls in honor of the Tigers. THURSDAY was Pop’em Day and student council sold tootsie-pops and offered a $10 prize to the class turning in the most wrappers. FRIDAY was Spirit Day and many students wore maroon and white from head to toe to show spirit. Wednesday, after the first night of pounding and stapling floats, students scurried to the bonfire by the fieldhouse. The band played and eagle effigies were tossed in while classes competed to see which had the largest lungs. When Friday finally arrived students spent most of the day finishing up floats and looking forward to the long-awaited assembly. Cheering, whistles and clapping echoed throughout the halls of D.C.H.S. during the assembly. Long anticipated and well remembered by many are the homecoming skits and the winning one was exceptional. The seniors, not to be outdone, did a hilarious “Saturday Night Live comedy type skit with a cast of Wild and Crazy Guys , Coneheads, Not Ready for Prime Time Players, and Nurse Diesel. The junior skit which placed 2nd was a spoof of Charlie's Angels , the sophomore skit had a “Wizard of Oz” theme and the freshmen skit concerned spies. During the assembly Mr. Germain was presented a plaque by the football players and cheerleaders and Ms. Nowell a pot of flowers by the girl's volleyball team, for their coaching efforts for it was National Coaches Day. The game was the glory of Homecoming when the Tigers beat the Orchard Farm Eagles 47-0. The dance incorporated the Maroon Magic theme in programs and with wands and paper top hats as favors. Jade” was the band and they provided an evening for everyone with rock pop and easy listening music. Trophies and awards were presented and the coronation began. Homecoming was very special for Miss Patti Sitzes as she was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1978, and it will most certainly be remembered that way by all of us. 16 WELCOME TO SPIRIT DAY! FELLOW CRAZIES, LOONIES, AND NORMALLY c INSANE PEOPLE StootNr OvlMAICt CVIL! With strange people out in force, the assembly brought out a mixture of emotions. To say the least k an interesting A group of B characters provided a spellbinding and most original. HH almost HH live acting. GET SET ATTENTION: GET YOUR BODS IN LINE!! ON YOUR MARK First came the Pomp then came the float. Why are floats called floats when actually they don’t float? The tiny tot tiger twirlers (what a tremendous tongue twister) perform an array of fancy walking steps. Even the band looked magnificent in its grande marching duds with their spit shined tennis shoes. What a thrilling, chilling, exciting afternoon! m ,a ,, v Mg[ , POWDERPUFF __ IS A TIME FOR SOME GOOD OLD DOWN HOME BODYBUILDING, BACK-BREAKING, BRA-BUSTING, 24 RIP-SNORTING FUN!! It all happened on October 3. The gym shook from the delicate voices of the attractive cheerleaders. Never have such nubby legs been exposed to the naked eye. The spirit was high as the All Girl Marching Band played their rendition of the school song. Everyone knew the game was soon to follow. That dark evening, as tensions grew and parents mounted the bleachers, everyone was anxious to see the triumph of victory and the agony of defeet! Tensions grew even stronger as the two nefariously evil-looking teams unscrupulously planned their strategies. CRASH! BANG! BOOM! went the battered bodies of the bewildered beauties. As the dust cleared and the sun set in the west, the glaring lights flashed the final devastating score; Seniors: 28 - Juniors: 8. BUT IN THE END WE’RE STILL FRIENDS! 25 WHAT’S THE STORY JACK? THE STORY IS The thrill of Victory, The stink of de-feet and de-pits! So that's why the crowd is groaning and roaring. Entertainment was supplied by those wonderful kids in the marching band with their spit shined spuds and the multi-talented majorettes twirling their little fingers off. The half time show ended with a back fire from the six vettes and the Queen Candidates putted by the crowd at a reviving 80 m.p.h. 4th Row: Coach Kirn. Coach Bright. Brian Nobbe. Dwayne Baumgarte. After the upsetting loss to Principia, every game was a do or die situation. The tension built until the last game of the season. A loss would mean 6-2 season, a win would mean State Play-offs. The Tigers held on to defeat a tough Assumption team. Many fans went to Carlinville to support the Tigers. The Tigers lost to a very strong Carlinville team in the last ten minutes. The Dupo Basketball Tigers made all the hard work pay off by ending the season with the best record in thirteen years. The man behind the hard work was Coach Steve McFall. “It’s nice to win, he said, and This was a good group of kids to work with, as well as being winners. There were an average of 60 people as members of student council — a larger number than in previous years. Along with expanding its size, its reaches have branched out into many areas. The main function of the organization is. like most in the school, to provide activities for students, but besides hosting Homecoming. Christmas activities, class elections, and various other dances and functions; student council is preparing students for future years. Using parliamentary procedure in meetings, through chairing a project, or attending workshops and conventions that teach special skills and allow students to meet people from other schools, student council is building the foundation for leaders. As every club, organization, or company needs leadership, the demand for leaders is constant. Student Council is a member of the Kaskaskia District of Student Councils (KDSC). and the Illinois Association of Student Councils (IASC). Van Dashner was the first KDSC officer of Dupo in 1967-68. its fourth year of existence, and Linda Ferry also served as vice president of the KDSC in 1976-77. Bryan Phillips held the position of KDSC treasurer in 1977-78. and in 1978-79. Toni Giovanetti will serve as news editor. Among the new projects that took place, the first student exchange was held in fall of '78 with Alton High School. This year School Board Representatives from Student Council were appointed for the first time. The Spring Thing occurred for the first time in '79. and Carole Mudd coordinated the project as chairperson. The traditional time to select officers, at the start of the school year, was changed to the start of the second semester, resulting in two sets of officers for the '78-'79 school year. The '78 officers were: president. Bryan Phillips; vice president. Dave Thompson; secretary. Cheryl Peters; treasurer. Greg Hobbs; and points chairperson. Kathy Hofstetter. The '79 officers are: president. Tom Giovanetti; vice president. Mark Poettgen; secretary. Beverly Fuller; treasurer. The newspaper reflects an era of journalistic style now coming of age in high schools as students speak out about their beliefs. Just as the Tiger Tales reports on the times, it is also a mark of the times. The winning football and basketball teams have played an important role in the school and town causing a resurrection of pride. The Point-Counterpoint column commented on such issues as disco and bleachers bums. The Tiger Tales proudly proclaims school achievements throughout the year. In the summer of '78 two students, Toni Giovanetti and Rhonda Riebeling, and their advisor, Ms. Parnell, drew up the blue-print of a new publication for DCHS. They worked on sweltering afternoons, pounding the pavement, searching for a printer and potential advertisers. At the end of the year the paper was the recipient of two SISPA (Southern Illinois School Publications Association) awards. Several staff members will be attending summer workshops at area colleges during the summer and writing articles and taking pictures for the local newspapers to get real-life journalistic experience. staff Editor in-chief News Editor Feature Editor Advertising Editor Boys Sports Editor Girls Sports Editor Toni Giovanetti Rhonda Riebeling Chris Noethen Rhonda Riebeling Dave Thompson Vickie Langille Reporters Becky Branson. At the start of the year we re all herded into the gym to assemble for one purpose — choose an activity. Images of singing in harmony, watering plants, sawing wood, strumming the guitar, or even flying an airplane crowd our minds, but we can only choose one.
