Bob Goforth sings to Cindy King. “0yv WITH THE 15 McKENDREE MODEL UNITED NA TIONS Each year students from many schools in the area gather at McKendree College, Lebanon, to participate in a mock United Nations debate. Dupo is traditionally represented by a group of senior history students. The students represent all of the countries in the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. They heatedly argue world problems from the point-of-view of the countries they represent. The students return to their schools with a new and deeper appreciation and understanding of the modern world and its myriad problems. 16 BECK VOCATIONAL CENTER Beck Area Vocational Center is located in the Hecker-New Athens area. B.A.V.C. courses are available to the junior and senior students from the ten participating high schools. Beck offers its students job placement assistance and scholarship and financial aid information. The students attend Beck three hours daily and earn 2-2'A credits a year. The rest of the day is spent in their regular classes at Dupo High. 18 The Junior class shows their appreciation to Ms. Parnell. 22 Donna and Steve dance under the “Tequila Sunrise.” Right: Cheryl and Paula throw pennies in the wishing well as their dates look on. Donna Keys escorted by John Phillips. 24 FUTURE NURSES The Future Nurses Club was very active this year. They visited servicemen in the hospital at Scott Air Force Base Hospital, assisted at a Swine Flu vaccination clinic, and helped with the local bloodmobile. We’re sorry we didn’t have a photographer at any of your functions, girls, but we want to congratulate you and your sponsor Mrs. Sylvia Mentel for being an active worthwhile organization. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Seniors in National Honor Society are shown on page 82. Again, we’re sorry there are no pictures of newly initiated member this year. BIOLOGY CLUB Biology Club this year was organized as an in-school activity. Some of the duties of the members are; taking care of the animals in the lab, taking care of plants and equipment, and other miscellaneous dut-ties. CHESS CLUB Chess Club is made up of twenty students interested in improving their chess game. They meet weekly during the activity period. Late in the school year the students held an intramural tournament. 29 Students enjoyed volleyball, basketball, and ping-pong at the co-recs this year. Hard working members of student council risked their own cooking at spaghetti supper. Teresa cleaned the lettuce for the salad that accompanied the spaghetti. Student council members dressed up to entertain the student body at the assembly to promote the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Master chefs were hard at work for hours preparing the Italian delicacies for the spaghetti supper. 30 STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council is open to any high school student who earns enough points to stay in as a member. Points are earned by attending meetings or helping out with school events. The Student Council represents the student body and helps give a voice in school policies. Mr. Thomas is the sponsor of the group. Officers of the group are President: Mary Beth Bertram, Vice-President: Conan Stott, Treasurer: Betty Stahl-schmidt. Secretary: Kim Wilhelm and points Chairman: Linda Ferry. 31 AUDIO-VISUAL CLUB Audio-Visual Crew is responsible for operating the audio-visual equipment for teachers, coaches, administration, and any other school personnel who need a demonstration, ball game, or television program taped for future use. The equipment appears to be very complicated at first sight, but many of the crew members are able to operate it. I f SPEECH CONTEST CLUB BUSINESS CLUB Tammy Kunkel and Beth Poettgen are rehearsing for a speech contest. Members of the club read the daily bulletin over the intercom each morning. The sponsor of the Speech Contest Club is Mrs. Wolke. Tracy Thomas is diligently concentrating in Typing Club. The sponsor is Mrs. Cook. Many students in the activity are freshmen, who usually don’t have the opportunity to learn to type. 32 Lori McCracken working on a ceramic vase in the crafts inschool activity. Mrs. Nobbe is the sponsor. Bryan Phillips attentively listens and talks on a Citizens Band radio in the C.B. activity club. Mr. Brillhart is the sponsor of this in-school club. ECHO STAFF Echo staff is responsible for publishing the monthly school newspaper. The Echo includes sports, activities, stories, poems, jokes, and general information about DCHS. Thompson. 33 ECOLOGY CLUB Ecology Club explains to students the problems we are facing and gives them the chance to help improve our environment. Richard Bright is the sponsor. Mr. Bright and students are studying marine life in the picture. ART CLUB Art Club enables each student to work individually on his or her own interests. Becky Robbins is the sponsor. Diana Wooters and Debbie Camp, lower left, work on batiks. Debbie Kunkel concentrates on her crocheting. 34 MOTORCYCLE CLUB The motorcycle club gets together every Friday to discuss equipment, rallies, safety and everything to do with their hobby. The sponsor, and leading enthusiast of cycling, is Mr. Ron Malone. FOLKCRAFTS CLUB The Folk Craft’s Club works on craft projects as our forefathers did many years ago. in the picture, lower left, Bob McLean stands by the mural he is painting depicting our American heritage. On the right, Robin Lewis works on a candle she is making using pioneer methods. 35 CLUB Business Club provides additional practice to students in business classes. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Photography Club is designed to teach students the skills involved in taking and developing pictures. Milton Bryant is one of the students who has shown exceptional talent. 37 INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB Industrial Arts Club is designed to give students time to work on woodworking projects and teach them basic rules on safety. HORTICULTURE CLUB Horticulture Club gives students a chance to learn about different plants and how to care for them. Davie Sue Raker is the sponsor. Mr. Germain is the sponsor. GAA is designed to give the girls a chance to show their atliletic abilities. The members are also required to have earned a letter. Ms. Sheets is the sponsor. MATH CLUB Math Club is designed to help students excel in the field of Mathematics. Aside from working on basic math problems the students can also do advanced work in other areas of the field. Brian Stewart tackles a difficult problem. FHA FHA, Future Homemakers of America, is a club designed to give girls the basic skills and knowledge needed to run a home. Many of the girls enjoy doing various kinds of needlework. Thelma wants to be a wrestler. 44 MYSTERY THE A TRE In the spring the drama club presented four mystery suspense plays. Above are scenes from three of the plays. The drama club should be congratulated on their fine performances. In the final game Dupo defeated a team that had played for several years. Of the eleven starters, ten were eighth graders. Students participate in five different activities throughout the year. They choose from a list that includes; dramatics, ceramics, indoor recreation and games, outdoor games, newspaper, yearbook, drawing, macrame, arts and crafts, student council, Citizens Band radio, and whatever there is a demand for. liveryone benefits because the teachers have the oppor tunity to share their hobbies, talents, and interests with a group of enthusiastic students. They competed in seven meets against other area schools.
