1952 Si “7icpic Slufrti hed JAe S,etiioi CiaM Shipo- Community Sc l at SCHOOL HISTORY Our school had its beginning in 1915 with an enrollment of fourteen students. At this time two years of high school work were offered. Four years later the school offered a three-year course. It was in 1920 that a Community High School was decided upon by the voters. Just as the size of the student body has increased, so has the size of the physical plant. It was in 1925 that our present site at the foot of the Bluffs” was chosen. In 1926, the Main Building was erected. The enrollment had grown from 14 in 1915 to 66 in 1926. Within 5 years, the enrollment increased to 237; at this time, 1931, the Vocational Building was added. By 1942, the enrollment had doubled that of 1931, so a new building connect- ing the Main and Vocational Buildings was added. Nineteen forty-four saw the school still growing and saw the building of a garage in which to store our buses. Finally, more land was purchased in 1946, making a total of 22.64 acres in the present site. A regulation football field which may be illuminated for night events was completed. By 1947, a quarter-mile cinder track with a 220 straightaway was completed around the football field. Also, a field house was constructed. The enrollment was nearing the 700 mark, but dropped to 435 this year when students from District 187 no longer came here, but began attendance at Cahokia Commonfields School. As you will see in the following pages, students at Dupo Community High School now enjoy a good curriculum, many activities, and a variety of feature events. ■fi THE ANNUAL STAFF Editor-in-Chief Jack PuJrher Art Staff Joyce Muskopf James Schwartz Introduction Irma Kurtz Phyllis Swartz Dorothy Wenkel Factulty Sponsor Lucy Stewart Underclassmen Willard Gummershiemer Bob Bufford James Schwartz Classes Irma Kurtz Charleen Berghoefer Dorothy Earnhart Activities Phyllis Swartz Dorothy Wenkel Sports Jack Drury Jack Pulcher Norman Braden Boy Bufford Features Maryann Claussen Gerry Cook Bob Bufford James Schwartz Dorothy Wenkel Phyllis Swartz We the class of 1952, are proud and honored to present our annual to our sponsor, George Wolke, as a token of our gratitude and undying thanks for his efforts during the past four years in aiding our class in its many activities. We sincerely consider this season’s football record a great success. Coach Baker and Brubaker devoted a great deal of time to produce such a winning team with such great spirit and determination. The team as a whole did well even though they were very small to compete with the larger and more powerful squads Their final record was four won and two lost. Those who are to be back next year are: James Hoppes, Fred Gaines, Floyd Evans and other promising starters. Possibly the most thrilling game of the season was the homecoming game which the Tigers won, 44 to 0, at the expense of St. Genevieve, who just couldn’t seem to get started in the scoring column. The starting team was made up entirely of seniors. Those graduating are Kent, Kohlenberger, Holmes, Hankamer, Ross, Goforth, Mallett, Raitt and Holes. Coach Baker said the team was hardly as well balanced as last year's team. Don Holmes and Ernie Kohlenberger were the two leading scorers of the season. The Tigers were forced out of first place in the Cahokia Conference by the well-balanced Waterloo team after leading the conference for the most part of the season. Possibly the most disappointing game of the season was the Dupo-Anna Jonesboro game in which the Tigers lost “10-38 in double overtime. The ruling was that the first team scoring a field goal would automatically win. Anna-Jonesboro won the tip-off and waited for their chance which proved to be accurate. Above these disappointing defeats, the Tigers did make a very fine showing against Staunton, a high ranking team, by defeating them 76-58 in fine exhibition of ball handling and deadly accuracy at the hoop.
