Senior Class History Finally we've made it! Let's seeffit was four long years ago when we first entered the portals of Dupo Community High School, and we were just as green as any crop of Freshmen. We were all filled with big plans, and the first step we took to carry out these plans was to hold a grand St. Patrick's Day Dance. Our Sophomore Year brought bigger and better things-our Valentine's Day party is still talked about. And do you remember the floorshow we put on then? We really showed the school that our class had talent. In our Iunior Year we gave our school one of the most successful Home- coming-Football Dances ever held, this was followed by our Iunior Playka thriller called The House Without a Key. Needless to say, our Prom was an occasion not soon to be forgotten. To bring you up to date on our busy Senior Year, we Forty-niners gave a rip-roaring Gold Rush party in November, an amusing play in March, and an entertaining as well as thrilling midnight show in April. We've had lots of fun these past four years. May each class enjoy school as much as we have! Page N ine IEANNE ABEGG Readers' Club, 4 Printing Club, 4 ROBERT B. Junior Class History One more year until graduation! These folks will soon be the proud seniors, the Class of l95O. Looking back, this has been a busy group, what with the usual parties and many pencil sales. This past year's Football Dance was a truly memorable evening! And A Date with ludy, the lunior Play, was a treat for all. Who needs to say more about the Hawaiian Prom? The tireless efforts of Miss Glascock and her crew of salesman deserve the thanks of all those who attended the athletic events of the school year l948-1949 for their keeping the spectators well supplied with soda, hot dogs, candy apples, pretzels, and candy bars. Sophomore Eloss History Two years ago on a certain memorable September day, the present Sophomore Class was deposited on the doorstep of Dupo Community High School. With the idea of making new friends, and with all the excitement of each and every day, they were determined to accept the challenge of high school life. After about six months they presented their first class party, a St. Patrick's Day Frolic. This year's party, on Valentines Day, proved that when it comes to giving super parties, the Sophomores can do it! Everyone is counting on big things in the future from this group. Freshman Class History Late to class again! Where's that thing called an assembly, and where do I get my ticket? All of these questions were soon answered by helpful upper classmen. My, what a big school, thought most of the freshmen. A map which was supposed to direct them to their various classes failed, as usual, and they were late for all of them. Recently this group has become fully adjusted to the ways of high school and will no doubt eagerly assist next year's freshmen. The freshmen, traditionally green, entertained the school with a Wearing of the Green at a St. Patrick's Day Party. Though green appears to be their favorite color, their accomplishments this year foretell big things for the future. With a sponsor like Mr. Wolke and the enthusiasm of the class, watch out for the class of l952. . In years to come when we think back to our pleasant days in high school, the many exciting nights at the football field, the afternoons at the baseball diamond, and evenings in the gym watching the Tigers sinking baskets will be uppermost in our thoughts. We'll also think of our three able coaches-Coach Baker, Coach Brubaker, and Coach Malinsky. These three, familiar to all the school, were in a large part responsible for all the fun of watching the Tigers conquer their opponents. Often after a game is won, the players are cheered and congratulated. But we sometimes forgot to say anything to the coaches. We simply didn't stop to realize that their continued efforts have brought not only glory to the teams but also to the school. Three cheers for our swell coaches and their perseverance in face of defeat and their calm in time of victory! The 1948-1949 basketball season literally started at the beginning of the year with Coach Bakers aspirants practicing each fourth and fifth hours. The records for the year shows this practice and those hours after school paid off, with Dupo winning fifteen C151 and losing five C51 games. Dupo held an invita- tional tournament early in lanuary with Chester, Freeburg, Staunton, Living- ston, Wood River, and Anna-lonesboro competing. Anna-lonesboro came out with top honors, followed by Dupo and Wood River. Coach Bakers quintet is a capable squad. Center Don Gericke is well- known for his shooting and rebounding. Forward Bill Pennoclds high scoring along with Bob Avett's defensive ability and ball handling will long be remembered. Harres and Schnittger made names for themselves by their smart floor playing and excellent guarding. Whenever called upon to sup- plement the Tiger Five, this year's reserves have proved themselves capable of maintaining the Tigers' high standards. Nice dreaming, but only seven girls were so lucky. The Country Garden setting made a fitting background tor the high spot of the evening when Betty Kern became ruler ot the Prom guests and court. Prior to Betty's march to her throne, Delores Ruhman, Bessie Meininger, Bev- erly Thompson, Eva Robinson, Dot Sims, and Myrtle Mueller had taken their places as maids of honor to View the approach ot the queen. Not to be tor- gotten are flower girl, Barbara Whittaker, and crown-bearer, Iimmy White, both of Whom appeared to be Veterans ot many coronations. ' Iudging from the votes cast for them, Queen and court alike were special favorites of the student body. Mr. Painter and the class of 1949 are to be con- gratulated tor such a grand eveningfdecorations, Russ David's music, and entertainment. The luniors, with Miss Glascoclds capable assistance, did a remarkable job of transforming the gym into an indian Summer Evening, complete with autumn leaves, gay streamers, and footballs, which upon close inspection turned out to be balloons. The new queen, Shirley Donner, received the crown and throne of Wanda Bohanon the monarch of the i947 Football Dance. Shirley's court included Gerry McNabb, Luan Rehg, Dot Sims, and Beverly Thompson. What a glorious weekend it was- from the rousing bonfire and rally on Thursday, Fridays football victory over Alton, to the last seconds of the dance. Why is it that good times always have to seem so short? Page If zjty mm' 11' Yi rl ll A Waltz Dream Cn November 9 and 10, the Vocal Music Department under the direction of Miss Valerie Kunze presented Cscar Strauss' three-act operetta, A Vlfaltz Dream. The sparkling music and the fine solo and chorus work were most pleasing to the audience. The plot was largely concerned with a marriage tor love or a marriage for money. And typical of operettas, love won out. The main leads included Bob Miller, Doris Duckworth, lohn Laird, Kay Baldwin, Bob Steppig, Pat Weatherford, Beverly King, Bonald Greer, and Pat Behg. The Dupo Orchestra, under Mr. Leigh Kimball's direction, was augmented with student musicians from Soldan-Blewett High School, St. Louis. A vocal chorus of one hundred and fifty provided delightful interludes. HUM: Act Plays To afford more members an opportunity to try their hands at acting, the Dramatics Club experimented last fall by presenting an evening of one-act plays. The enthusiastic reception of the plays Undertow, Second Honeys moon, Fortune ls a Cowboy, Echo, and Third Plate left audience and casts anticipating future presentations such as these. Miss Ardath Short, the Draniatics Club, and the Stage Crew are congratulated for their making such a delighttul evening possible. Students who participated in the plays were: Sue Sewel, Richard Friend, Dave Greer, lerry Phillips, Mary Ellen Richert, lohann Upchurch, Beverly King, Shirley Bradley, Laverne Andrews, leanette Upchurch, Bessie Mein- inger, Virginia Grider, Alice Dolecki, Wilma Fox, Gloria Ward, Frank Malin, loyce Gruen, Paul Wisehart, loyce Hutchings, loan Bruce, Bob Tunze, lohn O'Dell, Veronica Michael, lack Penny, and Barney Holley.
