Senior Class of 1947 Page Three Page Four Y Vee N 14 miniAt1-ation In 1915, the Community High School of Dupo, Illif nois began its career. Tts initial enrollment was four' teen students. The capacity at the present is six hundred and sixty pupils. The enrollment increases every year as the Freshmen classes continue to grow. Our school had a simple and humble beginning, but it is certain that its success thus far, foretells still greater progress. Each year of its existence, by its achievements, has helped to make it one of the out' standing schools in this area. The Faculty and Adf ministration may well be proud of its worthwhile acf complishments in the field of Education. They found that high school wasn't as simple as it had sounded, and it was a few weeks hefore adjustf ments were made. After a few weeks of school, otlicers for the class were elected, and Mr. Smotherman was chosen class sponsor. At the completion of the first year. with many accomplishments gained, we left school determined to make our next ycar a more progressive one. Chapter ll Witli the resolution to make our sophomore year or.e to rernernlwer. the class of '47 began to push forward from September io june under the sponsorship of Mr. Barker. Robert .Ioshu was again elected president of the elass1 lloheri Swoliodxi, vicefpresidentg and Llarence Langwith. secretary-treasurer. Spring carrie with its usual number of victims for Cupid. so we sponsoietl the successful party Don't Fence Me ln. The girls did the asking, paying and cutting. Before the end of the year came more sports. a social season and those hairfpulling exams: but we left school in -Iune knowing that we had two more years of work and play at D.C.H.S. Chapter Ill Then we were juniors and considered ourselves as Nupperclassinenf' The fact that we were juniors became more real when we placed our orders for class rings, longfdesired treasures. Gene Asselmeier took up the duties of class president. assisted hy LeRoy Darnell, vice president, and janet Richert, secretaryftreasnrer. XVe originated the Hrst homecoming weekend which was given on Noveinher 10th. There was a banquet and dance following the football game. To bring out some of the dramatic abilities of our class we gave the play Going Places, XVorking hard for many weeks in advance. we entertained the seniors with the annual -Iuniorfsenior Prom For this we decorated the gymnasium beautifully as a flower garden. Chapter IX' Now we are seniors and feel that we have reached the goal we have heen climbing toward for four years. Vv'e began the last and most remembered year with the election of class officers: Steve Zebos. president: liraneis jerome, vice presidentg and Thelma Pulcher, secretary-treasurer. Vvfe were busier than ever this year. crowding much work and play into ou final year. We participated in all activities and sports, and we gave an all-school party called Talent Scouts . since there were appointed seouis to find hidden talent for the entertainment at the party, As our final conf tribution to school life we presented the senior play on April 23 and 24. Baccalaureate -- graduation --- and our days at Dupo High are over. Now that the time has come around for the members of our class to graduate and take leave of our dear old Alma Mater. we cannot help but feel a little dejected. Even though we have new worlds before us to conquer. we will never be able to forget the good times and pleasant freindships that have made our school days at Dupo High such happy ones. Although only two lettermen returned to the squad, the basketeers had hopes for having one of the best seasons of recent years. The realization of this hope has thrilled all Dupo fans. After several weeks of vigorous conditioning the season was opened on the home floor with a 4662 victory over Maseoutah. The climax of the season came with the spring tournaments. Following the winning of the regional tournament at Belleville, the Tigers went to the finals of the sectional tournament at East St. Louis where we were stopped by the Collinsville live. D. C. H. S. was especially proud of this tournament record because this was the Iirst time a Dupo squad ever went to the finals of a sectional tournament. Capacity crowds filled the gym and cheered the team on to many victories, and a large following of fans accom' panietl the team to many outfofftown games. Outstanding players included Cal Neeman, Steve Zebos and Virgil Gerieke, all senior members of the squad. Cal was high point man for our team with 610 points. Our team, as a group, scored 1657 points against 1238 for our opponents. This team won more games than any other team in the history of our school. For this victory we won tlSk Eag St. Louis journal trophy for the second straight year. ln the eight meets our Tigers emerged victorious five times. In the Herrin Relays 1which included ahout 25 schools1 the Tigers placed fifth, and in the District Track Meet Wzilter Stein placed fifth in the high hurdles for the only point reg' istered hy the Tigers in the meet. Among the veterans from the previous season were Everett Amos, Don Creath, Ed Schmelzel, Cal Neeman, Al Groce and Nelson Ferry. The boys had hitting ability but couldn't come through in the pinches. We lost our first three games before finally breaking into the winning column by beating East St. Louis by the score of 11-6. After that victory we bowed to Alton and O'Fallon, coming back then to beat Madison 8f7, with splendid pitching by Nelson Ferry and Don Gericke. W'e then lost to Freeburg for the second time, as well as to O'Fallon. This game with O'Fallon was the last game of the regular season, and we turned our attention to the District Tournament. In the tournament Madisoii defeated us 1011. With the return of five lettermen we hope to see a successful season in 1947.
