We have earnestly worked this year to preserve the smiling faces of our faculty, classmates, and friends and to recapture some of our most-loved occasions. THE REFLECTOR will mean much to each student, not only when he first gets it, but in later years, too. Just as wine improves with age, so will THE REFLECTOR come to mean more through the years. One day, As The World Turns , we will stop our own particular world long enough to look through our I960 REFLECTOR and recall past faces and good times. It is with you and future interests in mind, that we, the Senior Class of Dunlap High School proudly present THE I960 REFLECTOR. 2 ' TABLE OF F orward Annual Staff Dedication Admini str ation Memoriam F acuity CONTENTS Seniors Underclas smen F eatures Sports Statistics Advertisements ANNUAL STAFF Sitting 1 to r Winston V ebb. She has been more than just a secretary to the principal. Daisy has been the per¬ son to whom we turn for information and to doctor our cuts and bruises from the first graders on up to the Seniors. Ther efore, we the Senior Clas s dedicate the annual of I960 to one who has always been efficient and dependable, to Our Girl Friday , Mrs. Hartman. 5 6 7 5 IN MEMORIAM: SIDNEY WILLIAM BROUGHMAN It is with sorrow that we record the death of a former cus¬ todian of Dunlap High School, who departed this life on June 2 3, 1959 in the Veterans Hospital, Roanoke, Virginia. Education is more than a means of putting extra dollars into your pay envelope. It is more than a means of acquiring new skills to sell goods. Education helps prepare students to make satisfactory vo¬ cational adjustments. It should also equip young men and women for good citizenship--for taking their places in their community as citizens and leaders of a democracy. Edu¬ cation is to help people to develop their special abilities and interests--to help them to enrich their personalities and to add satisfaction to their living. You are aware of the fact that graduation from high school is by no means the end of your education. You have come a long way; but there are countless possibilities still before you. You also know that to take your place in the complex society in which we are living, you will want as much education as you can possibly obtain. There is no denying the fact that the more education you have, the better off you will be--the better your chances for success will be --the better citizen you will be, and the happier and fuller life you will lead. I urge you therefore to continue your education by what¬ ever means are available to you. The faculty of Dunlap School wishes for each of you suc¬ cess and happiness. 10 Sincerely yours, R. As the long journey toward the goal of graduation was started there were thirty seven happy first graders under the leadership of Miss Rose Fleshman. Of those thirty seven only 11 stayed at D.H.S, Those were Betty Jo, Paula Jp, Betty, Howard, Shirley Jean, Garland, Mike, Linda, Ina Mae, Betty Lou, and Carol Ann. Although not the same group , we still had thirty seven students in the second grade with Mrs. Delena Smith as our teacher. We were joined by Winston Webb that year. Thirty third grade students took on the happy job of being third graders with Mrs. John E. Jenkins as our teacher. We were happily led toward the fourth grade as we took part in the May Day Program with the Minuet. Donald Graham joined us that year. 1953 found thirty three students in Mr s, O. H. Carper ' s class. One of the biggest events was the May Pole Dance in the May Day Program. We started the fifth grade with a substitute teacher, James Owens until Mrs, Allison was able to be with us. That year we welcomed Sandra Bicknell, Shirley Mc¬ Allister, Jerald Blankenship, and Bertie Sartain from Callaghan as new students. Mrs. Johnson had thirty three students in the Sixth Grade. We were happy to welcome Paul Graham that year. Our seventh grade was one of the happiest as we experienced the joy of field trips with a new teacher at Dunlap, Mr. James Owens. Anna Stuart, Jim Cook, and Burton May became members of our class that year. 1957 , Freshmen at last! That year found the large group of forty two students crowding into Mrs. Marquess ' homeroom. Paula Jo Bell was our candidate for Fall Queen. In the fall of 1958, we entered Miss Shirley Carper ' s room with only twenty nine students. In Mr, Carter ' s homeroom Carol Webb, Jim Cook, Mike Carter, and Paula Bell were chosen to lead our class of twenty nine students. Patty Gooch joined us from Covington High and became our candidate for Fall Queen. We enjoyed as the high¬ lights of our year the publishing of THE KNIGHT HERALD and preparing for the Junior-Senior Banquet at Reid ' s Blue Room, Ah! Seniors finally! We were most happy to welcome Miss Barbara Hoover as our sponsor, Paula Bell, Jim Cook, Mike Carter, and Howard Bratton were elected as our officers. One important event was the crowning of Carol Ann Webb as MISS DUNLAP I960. By the time you read this we will have published THE REFLECTOR, presented the Senior play JUST DUCKY and have completed our plans for the Senior trip. As we march down the aisle in our graduation caps and gowns and dangling tas¬ sels, we will be launching ourselves to become better citizens and to put into use the eleven years of knowledge we have gained. A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: from AN ESSAY ON CRITICISM by Alexander Pope. Class Historian Shirley McAllister 52 CLASS PROPHECY AS THE WORLD TURNS into the future, I predict: Jerald Blankenship recently completed a new musical play called Dancing to the Center of the Earth. Burton May, great baseball player, has just signed another contract with the Mars and Moon Boys at a grand price. •V Olympic Figure Skater, Bertie Sartain, recently announced the opening of the Ice Rink on Ogles Creek. Linda Humphries has given up her title of World Champion Girl Wrestler to marry Gene Snyder. Ina Kersey has become a general in the Woman ' s Army. She says that it is really the life.
