On Thursday, called Library Day, the students spend their class period in either the Public or School Library doing reference work. Each student takes his favorite novelist or poet as the theme of the paper toward which the club Works at that time. The group as a whole has enjoyed the freedom of their choice of literature. Before the football season had ended, the band had increased its membership to forty. The Board of 'Education furnished new uniforms of maroon and white for the members of the band. The band also received some new music, consisting of twenty new marches, five overtures and a new set of books. For the first time in the band's history, they competed in the Western New York Music Festival and received the highest honor in class A. This is the highest rating that a Dunkirk band has ever attained and brings added pres- tiqe to this group of ambitious musicians. In this way the band has proved itself worthy of the praise of every student and teacher in the school. This summer the band will give a series of concerts in front of the City Hall. S . . Track 4 Early in March, the largest turnout for track that Dunkirk High School has ever seen, answered Coach Ae-y's call tor candidates. Despite the tact that over 85 boys reported, only tour letter-men, Clittord, Brown, Pugh and Polowy has returned. With these boys as a nucleus Coach Aey began to build a team which he hoped would be a winner. Two weeks after the first meet was to take place, tour veterans, among them two letter-men, were dropped from the squad. Schilling, Brown, Polowy, and Albertine were the men who were cut. Later, however, Brown cmd Polowy were reinstated. This year a new event, the discus throw, has been added. The fine show- ing made by Repert in the shot put, by Thompson in the mile, by Clifford in the half-mile, and by Maclfarland in the hurdles, make the prospects for another county and sectional track meet look very good. They were under the guidance of Betty Schweian with Ruth Godden as manager. Soccer for girls was offered this fall for the first time in the history of the school. Great enthusiasm was shown for this activity which promises to be- come a popular sport. This year's volleyball was greatly upset when the Sophomores, under the guidance of Leona Snyder, Won the championship. This spring, Monday and Tuesday nights were devoted to baseball. There was a surprisingly large turnout for this sport. Tennis was featured on Wednesday and Thursday nights. As several girls were interested in this sport, a tournament was arranged. Two nights a week, during fall and winter, eight girls met at the adult recreation center for archery. Thirty-five girls signed up for the sport this spring. Miss Aileen Murray and Miss Florence Erickson were in charge of the after school activities. Sifflj'-Hitt? . t .',! ,.j'-'R MLK Y W- - -ii?
