Alfredo Pardo, a 17-year old from Limeiro, Sao Paulo, Brazil stayed with the Arnold Klammer and Richard Benson families. His studies at Dunkerton included Spanish, English, Math, and Science. When asked, Alfredo admitted that the thing he missed most was the warm weather. 2. Katia Ferro, a 14-year old from Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil, stayed with the Paul Miller family. HOMECOMING WEEK Homecoming festivities began October 11, when a free pass to Friday night's game could be won by collecting the most Beat Wapsie tokens. Also, on Monday was the voting for the top ten candidates. Tuesday's Clash Day followed as everyone dug out their most missmatched outfits. Wednesday was the highlight of the week when school was canceled because of a broken watermain. Therefore, Sign Day merged with Red and Black Day on Thursday. The student body voted for the top five candidates and later the queen was chosen. Friday closed the week with Dress Up Day, a pep rally downtown, crowning of the queen, and the game that night. ®®ss®sa mws HOMECOMING what happened on 42 Jr (1) The Queen and her court proudly pose at the afternoon program. (3) La Paloma runs into a slight problem when reaching for her gun. (4) Teetotal Tessie causes calamity in Jane's saloon. (2) (3) Invisible dragons, love, and make-believe were all in the speech class' play The Invisible Dragon . It was about a princess who fell in love with a prince who refused to stay in the kingdom unless there was a dragon to kill. The townspeople were lead to believe that there was a dragon and the prince slew it. gEMisssaas 46 m aaaa sss On the 21st of December the Student Senate sponsored a Christmas dance. Entertainment was provided by Chris Douglas from KWWL. Requested songs were played as everyone enjoyed dancing on the gym floor. Refreshments consisted of mixed nuts and punch. 47 w I N Tw .M, ji ’I CONCERT The annual Christmas program was presented by the music department on December 16. Selections such as Three Songs For Christmas , Fanfare For Christmas , Sing Gloria , plus others were given by the (1) Boys Glee, (2) Double Quartet and Mixed Chorus, (4) Girls Glee, (6) Madrigal, and (7) the Concert Band. (3) Delvin Sommerlot and (5) Lois Canfield sang solos in the song Gesu Bambino . (8) Karen Strempke sang Christmas Candle . 49 3 1. An interesting talk was given by the assistant football coach from the University of Iowa. 2. Mr. Webber predicts a winning baseball season. 3. Eight girls received varsity basketball letters. 4. Mr. Jester presents the boy's basketball awards. 5. The girl's softball team. J. Suzanne Staebell and Doug Jefferson were named Athletes of the Year. 2. Allen Rathe received Honorable Mention All-Conference in basketball. Lois Bartholomew received All-Registerland, 1st Team All-Conference, Honorable Mention All-State, and Iowa Press Association Honor Roll in basketball, and 2nd Team All-Conference in softball. 51 1. The cheerleaders worked hard to earn money in order to go to camp and buy new shoes. We had car washes, bake sales, stands at football games, a stand at Dunk-erton Days and egg sales. During the summer Kathy and Deb went to a clinic and learned new cheers and chants. We have put a lot of effort into making this a great year and getting many people involved. 68 Summer softball consisted of 13 girls. Of these, Lois Bartholomew and Cathy Mills received Second Team All-Conference honors and Honorable Mention was awarded to Connie Chase. Fourteen girls competed in fall softball. Missing from the picture is Delvin Sommerlot. Craig and Delvin missed some action due to injuries. The Junior Varsity team had 5 victories, and no defeats, thus providing a good foundation for the coming years. Mike Etringer and Doug Jefferson were Second Team Cedar-Wapsie All Conference Defensive Players. Tom Delegardelle was placed on the Oelwein Registerland Team as a Kick-Return Specialist. 72 For their first year the extramural socker team played all their games away. Each of the three games was a loss, but if they keep the determination they have shown, next year will be a reverse. The teams coach for the season was Miss Larson. 73 74 wyPiL (1) Raiders defense sagging back on a good shooter. (2) Lois's high-scoring jump shot in action. (3) Rebounders eagerly await the shot. (8) A flying skirt. 75 The Girl's Basketball team placed second as the conference’s offensive leaders. Lois Bartholomew held the top Scoring position in the Cedar-Wapsie Conference with an average of 40.8 points per game. The top rebounder for the conference was Laurel Schiller with 121: Suzanne Staebell held the highest free throw percentage, .776. Neil Hoppenworth was seventh in Cedar-Wapsie standings for free throw leaders. He made 69.4%. A1 Rathe placed fifteenth in field goal leaders. SHOTS 5 (1) Mike poised for action. Along with obtaining a trophy in the mile relay and three in the distance medley, they are now the conference champs in these two events, and they went on to run in the State Meet in Des Moines. The Mile Relay consisted of Suzy Staebell, Julie Magee, Laurel Schiller, and Cathy Mills. The Distance Medley had Suzy, Julie, Cathy, and a freshman, Glenda Nichols. There were many more fine relays and individual events, and many ribbons were won. A new track next year should help in maintaining this fine record.. Sponsored by: Gordon D. CD 00 The Raider Marching Band performed at three out of the four home football games. They played for the Homecoming festivities and the parade downtown. These same people also raised over $400 for the band activities by selling candy in November. The pep band provided a variety of entertaining music at every high school pep assembly and at home basketball games. The stage band played for the annual swing show. 68 O Z I 3) § O ©9 =D cS3 ©oj [nrO 90 Mixed Chorus, Girl’s Glee Club, and Boy’s Glee Club worked hard this year to prepare for the annual Christmas program which was presented on December 16. Girl’s Glee Club and Mixed Chorus also combined efforts with the Band to present a winter concert which was given on February 17. vO to PUBLICATIONS During the 1973-74 school year the newspaper staff consisted of 19 members, including Pat Fett-kether, editor, and co-editors throughout the year, Cathy Grady and Jan Hesse. At the middle of the year the decision was made to change the newspaper to a newsletter, due to the paper shortage and lack of interest. This year the annual staff was divided into four areas: (1) sales, (2) art, (3) camera, and (4) lay-out. Each member chose one specific area and devoted his time to it. Another change was that the staff not only did the picture paste-up, but the type paste-up. (5) Lu Ann Chapman was editor, assisted by Liz Wheeler and Robin Hahn throughout the year.
