Here they are as you see them: This ends J. L. Larson’s tenth year of teaching. Five of these have been spent as the guiding star of D. H. S. He is worthy of the place, and we extend our gratification and good will to him. He obtained his B. A. degree in 1922 at Iowa University, and teaches economics, glee club, dramatics. and is general supervisor. Miss Campbell has given seven years of loyal service to D. H. S. She reigns in all her majesty and rightly so, for the freshmen must have someone to help them after being green for a year in Junior High. Miss Campbell was 'age granted a B. A. degree at Cornell College in 1923. She teaches English and history, besides having the regular duties of a principal. We will remember Miss Campbell as a very good class sponsor. The Dunkerton athletic teams have been most successful this year under the supervision of Mr. Hartman. For the past three years he has been our coach and mathematics teacher. Mr. Hartman received his B. A. degree from I. S. T. C. in ’28. The elements of science and agriculture have been expounded for the past ten years by Mr. Jefferson. His undergraduate work was taken at Iowa State College, where he was granted a B. S. degree. One of the most successful branches of the County Library has been at our school this year. Much of the success of this plan has been due to our very capable librarian, Mrs. Conlisk. Besides this work Mrs. Conlisk teaches Latin and English. She is a graduate of Des Moines University, and has done graduate work at Iowa University. Now we come to the king of Junior High as he holds a firm hand over the seventh graders when they come up the stairs to “high school.” Mr. Bielefeldt teaches manual training, bookkeeping and typing. Miss Emerson received a B. S. degree at Iowa State Teachers College. She teaches the art of home economics and English. They are very important and necessary to the welfare of all. The work of the school band has been done this year under the direction of Miss Peick. Besides instrumental music, Miss Peick has charge of music in the grades and the girls’ glee club. Miss Peick is a graduate of Upper Iowa University. The following teachers have work in the primary ami intermediate departments: Thelma Smith, Bernice Nesfield. Clara Boyle, Marie Tierney, Viola Koss and Marcyea Weeks. Four Senior Class Play The Seniors pave their class play on May twelfth. It was entitled “Polishing Papa.” A brief synopsis is as follows: “Papa” is a man whose troubles are centered around two unruly “college bred” children. He is also very deeply concerned with hogs, which are the source of his income. He is in the sausage manufacturing, and “ain’t above it, never was and never will be.” His daughter, Jane, is thinking of marrying an English nobleman, Lord Dabney. But he is found out to have been a cook in the army and is traveling under a false name. Finally Smith is persuaded to try to play golf. He makes a $10,000 bet with Arthur that he will not like golf. Through the diplomacy of Rose Parker, Smith takes up golf, pays his bets and puts Arthur in charge of his sausage business. Arthur finallv wins the approval of his father and gets Rose Barker. Jane finds that Dick Brainerd, Smith’s attorney, is an ideal man. Smith becomes satisfied with life and is determined to play more golf. The Cast Mae Fettkether.................... The color scheme was carried out in the Senior Class colors of yellow and white. The programs were in the form of the world with a silhouette of North and South America on each. The members of the two classes met at the schoolhouse at five o’clock and then left for Waterloo. A delicious three-course dinner was served. The program was composed of a vocal trio, “The Old Refrain,” by Rita Staebell, Erma Yeager and Mae Fett-kether. The welcome was given by Venice Miller, who served as toastmaster. Francis Staebell gave the response. Other numbers of the program were: Instrumental duet, “When the Organ Played at Twilight,” by Lillian Engel-bart and Will Rogers; readings, “Our Little World,” by Vera Spies, The Wide Wide World,” by Miriam Buckmas-ter; trombone duet, “Moonlight on the Colorado,” by Cecil Knepper and Robert Albright; the class prophecy by Roger Magee; vocal duet, “Out of the Dusk to You,” by Rita Staebell and Erma Yeager. Everyone agrees that the Juniors proved to be wonderful hosts and hostesses. We also appreciate Miss Emerson’s efforts in making this event one that will not soon be forgotten by the Class of 1931. We express our appreciation of the interest the Juniors have shown to us. Five When Lincoln Said “I would rather be right than be President,” he struck a responsive chord in the hearts and minds of thinking Americans. To always stand for the right and still have real friends is a test for us all. Someone has said: “Life is sweet because of the friends we have made, And the things which in common we share We want to live on, not because of ourselves But because of the people who care. FIRST NATIONAL “It’s the giving and doing for somebody else, On that, all life’s splendor depends. And the joys of this life, when you sum them all up Are found in the making of friends.” BANK, Dunkerton, Iowa The Bank of Friendly Service Our Superintendent For five years Jordan L. Larson has guided our Ship of State. He served as superintendent at Lit-tleport and at Garna-villo before coming to Dunkerton. Mr. Larson, one of 12 children, was born on a farm near Roland, Iowa. His early training was in a rural school. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1922, and has taken postgraduate work at Iowa State College and at the University since. If plans materialize he will be awarded an advanced degree this summer. Through Mr. Larson’s efforts the tuition income has increased from around $1,200 to over $4,000 a year. Forty-two per cent of our present high school are tuition pupils. Besides this local school taxes have been lowered every year of his administration. Progressive economy has been his policy. Our superintendent is now president of the Consolidated Schools Section of the Iowa State Teachers’ Association, and has held other offices in the Northeastern division. He Page is a Captain in the Officers Reserve Corps and an active worker in the community. The Class of 1931 express their appreciation for his counsel and guidance throughout their high school career. High Spots of 1930-31 There have been many improvements in our high school during: the past year. These have greatly increased the efficiency of our school. They include the following: The largest freshman class in the history of the school was enrolled last September. We are offering a Commercial Course consisting of Typing, Bookkeeping, Business Law and Business Arithmetic. Our school exhibit at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress won second place. The Junior Class Play netted more than any other Junior play we have ever presented in I). H. S. Dunkerton’s basketball team won all of its sixteen games which were scheduled during the season. Our girls’ basketball team had a remarkable record. They lost only one game to Hazleton and two games played with Reinbeck. The baseball team has managed to keep in the lead in the Black Hawk County league. A sixty-piece band has been organized under the supervision of Miss Peick. They lost their only games of the season to Hazleton and Reinbeck. In the tournament, they won their first game from Maynard, and lost the next to the powerful Oclwein sextet. In the scheduled sixteen games of the season, Dunkerton came out on top in every instance. But no matter how good on? is there is always someone else better. In the finals of the tournament at Waverly the team suffered their only defeat of the season by a two-point margin. The team’s success can be credited to the willingness of the boys to follow the instructions of Coach Hartman. It was not a one-man team, but one composed of five men working as a unit on the floor, and also a group of ready Ten reserves on the sidelines ready to do their duty whenever called upon. The boys are to be complimented on their exceptional record and good sportsmanship throughout the season. Members of the squad are: Captain Staebell, Rogers. Penne, Guyer, Gaddis, Holdiman, Ray Weber, Ralph Weber, Smith, Larson, Morrison, J. Magee, Meyerhoff, Kramer and Hall. The season’s record for the boys: D. H. S 36 Janesville 35 D. H. The locals, however, failed to win a game at the tournament at La Porte City. Prospects for next year’s nine are bright, due to the fact that six regulars will be back for the coming year. The three members who will be lost by graduation are Magee, catcher, Staebell, first base, and Rogers, center field.
