TALON 1 9 . Dunedin High School Dunedin, Florida Volume XVIII Edition II What ' s Inside . . . Part 2 258 Spring Things 331 Who ' s Who at DHS 348 Final Curtain Lucky for us, Florida ' s gof all the beaches, pools, puddles, and unfortunately, floods and water in general we can handle. After a set of tennis or a couple of hours mowing the lawn, it ' s easy to find a pool to just sorta fall into. And during the hurricane season, you ' re glad you saved those three inches too short flood pants to wade through the halls of DH8 in. And who ' s to know that you ' ve got your bathing suit on under your T-shirt and jeans, ready to head toward tne beach after working up a hot anger in the parking lot. On the weekends, the sails go up and the day is spent peacefully cutting the waves in a Qunfish, downing six-packs and lazily lying on deck. Then there are puddles, the little things you always manage to park next to and step out into, thus ruining your new sneaks. Lastly, the early morning splash in the face wakes you up, starting a day that might end up with a couple more splashes in the face! 258 y 259 . And then there was spring Flowers and bunnies and lovebugs. Picnics and Disney World and rain. Beaches and sailing and sunburn. Skateboards and barefeet and blisters. Parties and concerts and headaches. Short shorts and tank tops and dress code. Baseball and hotdogs and no ketchup. Growing and seeking and sometimes failing. But still there is time for celebration — graduation. And then there was Summer! 260 261 HsneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddisi disneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddisneywotlddii lisneywotlddisneyworlddisneywotlddisneywotlddist disneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddk lisneywoHddisneywoHddisneywoHddisneywotlddiGr All Night Grad Nite — GREAT! Saturday morning, May 19, 1979, the cows got home before the D.HS. Seniors did Grad Nite 79 jumped with excite- ment throughout the long night, but the expressions on the faces of the rudely awakened seniors at 7:15 Saturday morning was no testimony to that fact. Apathetic fatigue was instead portrayed in the many drooping faces. But what a night it was! Dancing to the great sounds of Rose Royce and Gary ' s Gang, scream- ing until hoarse on Space Mountain, laughing with the Country Bear ' s, marvel- ing over the beauty of it all, getting Mic- key Mouse ' s autograph, having your hair stand on end in the Haunted Mansion, strolling down Main Street with that someone special, and just down right having the time of your life! Remember all the pooh bears? It seemed like everywhere you looked someone was carrying one of those bears. If you you weren ' t clutching a pooh bear you looked almost naked. What about those shoes you were advised not to wear? At around 3:30 a.m., a lot of girls seemed to develop an abnormal limp. It ' s strange how everyone seemed to turn up crippled at approxi- mately the same time. By bus loading time (5:00 a.m.) all the spikers were not only wishing they had listened to the enlightened advisors, but were wishing for a good, strong guy to lug them to the bus, or at least a wheel chair, courtesy of Walt Disney World. At any rate, no one can deny that the sparkle was there at Disney World that night. There was romance, adventure, humor, and fun. The sad part comes when we realize the night can never be repeated; at least not as a graduating Senior. Grad Nite ' 79 was a one time only, never to be repeated, extravaganza. And we ' ll never, ever forget the many unforgettables we created that night in the Magic Kingdom! 1 ) Joette and Candy get late night hug fronn Jett. 2) Grad Night in flight. 3) Mystical, magical Micl ey Mouse. 262 i I J i. , i. . „♦. vAu V M 1 : IfcAAA I M •if ■ ' 1) The Crystal Palace adds a touch ot glitter to Grad NIte 2) Excited group still going strong after leaving Haunted Man- sion 3) Laura and Mark — a perfect couple 4) Exhausted students fall asleep on trip home 5) Mrs Boylan and Mr Straub having fun. 6) This group Is one of the few not too tired to pose 7) Julie. Is It Worth It? You Bet It Is! Spring sprung into the air and so did the most asked question since the invention of Prom (obviously the work of a genius). Will you go to the Prom with me? From the first part of May until June 1 , those words could be heard echoing over telephone wires and down halls. Probably the average person doesn ' t realize just how much chaos IS involved by asking such a question. There are tuxes to rent ' dresses to pick out, shoes to coordinate, flowers to order, reservations to make, hair to fix, and nerves to tame. Threats of this chaotic disorder, however, don ' t seem to dishearten anyone from accepting an invitation to the Prom. Maybe guys just don ' t know what they ' re getting themselves into when they ask a girl to Prom, or maybe they ' re just gluttons for punishment. Whatever the case, once the question has been asked and the invitation accepted, there ' s no backing out. The guy has a great feeling of relief when the girl accepts his invitation, but little does he know that asking was the easy part, and the real difficulties are yet to come. First comes the problem of ordering a tux. How can the guy order a tux when the girl can ' t find a dress to hide her bulges? After searching through endless racks hours upon hours, she finally finds a dress. But, now most of the tuxes have already been rented out, and the poor guy ended up with pea green. (Her dress is baby blue.) The next dilemma is ordering flowers. What color should he buy? He finally picks out pink roses because he is sure they ' ll match the baby blue. As he makes his way out the door, he grumbles about how much cheaper it would have been if he had picked the petunias in his own backyard. Oh welH Making reservations at a fancy restaurant presents still another problem. Just how fancy is fancy is fancy? Is Ponderosa fancy? How about Steak-n-Shake? All these questions race through a guy ' s mind, especially if he ' s never been to Prom before. When Prom is viewed in this respect, we must stop and wonder if Prom night will be worth It. But we love it; getting ready is half that fun. We love looking for dresses, ordering tuxes, making reservations, deciding which nail polish to wear, and just plain getting ourselves worked up foe the big night. Is it worth it? Yeah, it ' s worth it! Senior Jefl Houck I enjoyed the Prom but It was not the best, Junior Missy Wampner The Prom was fun. but not what I expected it to be Senior Mike Marra I think the Prom was worth it, but it was too crowded Seniors should have their own Prom without the Juniors like they do up north ■ Senior Laura Fitton ■| had a good time I will never forget it. This unique group of people generally is hit in mass by a rare disease commonly known as Senioritis . Yes, each September a new group of proud, haughty Seniors stroll through the doors of DHS ready to take on the world. And they usually try to ' But, come the end of May — Senior Week, Baccalaureate, Graduation Rehearsal, and the Prom all combine to remind this holier-than-thou Senior that soon he will be leaving all of this unadulterated glory He remembers all the football games he went to, all the boring teachers he had, all the great parties he went to, but most importantly, he remembers all the people he saw day in and day out as he strutted through the halls of DHS. It ' s hard to realize that he will never see some of these people again ' While it ' s true that there are some people he ' d rather not see again, many of the other people he knew were good friends — friends who went with him to all those football games, suffered through all those boring teachers, and went to all of those great parties with him. Suddenly the almighty senior begins to think, What am I gonna do ' ' Oh, I guess I could )0in Uncle Gerald ' s singing telegram service, or become an archaeologist, but I really want to do something on my own. Maybe I ' ll go to college, or maybe I ' ll get a job somewhere and work my way up. Geez, I never really thought about it. Strangely enough though, most seniors will say that they can ' t wait to get out of high school. Most of them readily admit that while high school was great — they ' re ready to get out and start on something new. And that ' s what their Senior year is about — letting them strut their stuff from September to May, and then cool off to begin anticipating their future. 1 ) Senior class sponsor Mr Moutsatos congratulates new graduates 2) Mr. Freeman presents a diploma to a happy senior 3) The Class ot 79 files out of auditorium after Baccalaureate ceremony 4) Seniors Susan Packard, Tim Mullett, and Joyce Matthews share a laugh after Baccalaureate 5) Speaker Rev Standifer delivers his message to seniors 6) L ur ' e Leith has that Look Mom, I made it ' expression after Commencement. 281 ?8? No, that ' s not the population. But the mind begins to wonder when (after going twelve miles without seeing this town) just what Dune- din actually is. It ' s more than just a speck on the map. New Scotland, as Dunedin is sometimes called, was first settled two decades before the Civil War. Several tales abound of how this village-like city came to be called Dunedin. One story says that Dunedin was named for the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dune meaning rock, and Edin meaning castle; therefore, ' castle on the rock. ' Another story goes back to the time when George Jones opened a general store here in 1870 and named the town Jones-boro. Mr. Jones peti- tioned the government for a post office and requested that the town be called Dunedin, which is the Gaelic name for Edinburgh, and may be interpreted peaceful rest. In keeping with the Scottish tradition. Dunedin has three bagpipe bands, wearing the Elliot, Dress Stewart, and Royal Stewart tartans. Also, the Highland Games and Festi- val, held every March, help to keep the Scottish spirit going. Although to some people Dunedin may be a peaceful town it still has opportunities for sightsee- ing, recreation, and dining. For those who enjoy the outdoors, sailing, skiing, swimming, or fishing on St. Joseph ' s Sound or the Gulf of Mexicf is always availa- ble. For the sun-worship- per, sunbathing on Dune- din Beach or Caladesi Island, just 1 Vi miles off shore, tourists and citizens alike a fun-filled day. And, for the culturally-minded. The Dunedin Fine Arts and Cultural Center provides classes in humanities, cre- ative writing, language, and drama. To really come to know Dunedin, one must know her warm Scottish tradition. Certainly Dunedin has a heritage that we all can be proud of. Every year in late March a thoroughly Dunedin. All home matches were played at Eastlake Woodlands Country Club and daily practice was here at Dune- dih. I would like to take this space now to acknowledge those certain people who have helped me make it through this semester First, to Karen, Linda, Angie, and Jeanne, who helped relieve the insanity in 16A5, THANKS ' Also, to advisor Miss Lana Brown whose guiding hand was a constant comfortC ' ) I could never complete this page without mention of fvir Ken Holt and his son Jeff at Dunedin Studios for supplying us with all our film, developing, and many of our pictures (including all of our Senior portraits). They virtually saved my skin several times by hurrying to develop needed pictures on deadlines. Also, a big thank you to Kyle Duncan, our Tay- lor representative, who put up with our panic on the day before a deadline. Finally, thank you to everyone at DHS for giving me this golden opportunity. That is, to experience what true bedlam and panic really are! Happy Trails, DHS! Susan Packard Linda Goodlifte — Business Editor Susan Packard — Editor-in-Chiel For awhile there, I wasn ' t too sure about life or me. Either I was crazy or it was crazy, but there definitely was something wrong with one of us. My grades were rotten, my job was boring and my dog didn ' t even like me much any more. Everything was out to get me and so I responded in the proper way. I got depressed and then I got depressed because I was depressed. Day to day existence was first a trip, then a fall and finally a plunge into a series of disasters. But you know what saved me? A little help from my friends and a couple of jars of peanut butter. I had a book once when I was five or six that was called A Friend Is Gomeone Who Likes You. And when someone likes you, you begin to like yourself. 348 If something goes wr-ong, if gefs blamed on me. If anyone ever gets caught, it ' s always me. Like Ziggy or Charlie Chaplin, I ' m a born loser. Either that, or I must wear an expression that says Hi, I ' m stupid. Who gets caught getting a fake yearbook picture under the name Jack Daniels? Me. Who is responsible for screwing up the directions for Car 29 in the Car Rally? Me again. On Qenior Skip Day, who is unexcused because of honesty, not because of being at River Country? Me? Yup. But at least I kept out of trouble long enough to graduate. It could be, I did something right after all. 349 Frequently, well actually most of the time, I catch myself dreaming: Daydreaming, evening dreaming, late evening dreaming, I ' but never. L nikl iJ ' ll 2:X 1I I J dreams to be a reality ( as a chicken in my alterlife. My secret thoughts are my outlet, my salvation (or whatever) from parts of me that I want to change but can ' t. In my own world. I can do pretty much what I want or be whoever I want, with certain limitations of course, because it is hard to explain why you decide to destroy your desk while ou ' re sitting there vegetating in homeroom. Other than hat. there are no real restrictions on my imagination or I mu physical capabilities and I could go to Columbia if I pit Tike it. although there usually is half an hour wait for [luggage. One question, though. If Si mund Freud is so great at interpreting dreams, can he explain the one about the cheese dip, the priest and the whip, in the bathtub? Foreef that you got suspended for parking in the teachers ' parking lot. Ignore the fact that you slept through English and don ' t know the difference between an object and an adjective. Pay no mind that you lost the conference title by half a game. Instead, remember the great times at the causeway after a hard-fought battle. Reminisce about the days of old when you listened to that soulful rock and roll. Reflect on that warm June day as you look at the cap and gown that now hangs in your closet. Think of close friends now who you may never really know again because you go your separate ways. In ten years, you will look at a meaningful message in your yearbook, then look at the picture, and remember these four years as some of the best in your life. 352 a
