M organ This being the twentieth anniversary of our Alma Mater, we thought it only fitting that we should use an anniversary theme in our yearbook. We have striven to keep it a simple accurate record of the 1958-59 school year. The senior class, the largest in the history of D.C.S., necessitated the addition of eight pages to our publication. Through the addition of these pages, we have been able to increase the scope of the Highlander. As a member of the senior class and editor of the yearbook, I have had the pleasure of setting aside a portion of this yearbook as a memo- rial to our classmate and friend, Larry La Fever. The class of 1959 has dedicated this book to an individual who has helped maintain the school, given of his time and effort to the various classes and organi- zations, and has served as a faithful and devoted friend. Paul Bennett, Editor 2 LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Depew, Mr. Beers, Mr, Houck, Mr. Ossont, Mrs. Lane, pelident, Mx. Baker Mr. Underwood, supt.. Mr. Hunt, Mr. Howland, clerk. The twenty years since the centralization of your school have been wrought with wars and discord among nations, with changes in our ways of living, with changes in our ways of education. lt is our hope and expectation that the Class of 1959 will face the next twenty years with the confidence and faith that the Board of Education has in your ability to be good citizens and patriots. We, the Highlander Staff, have endeavored to produce a yearbook which will be an asset to our school 's twentieth anniversary. We sincerely hope this yearbook will meet the standards which have been set in the past and will serve as a guide to be used by future yearbook staffs. We anticipate that the effort spent in bringing you this yearbook will result in many hours of enioyment as you review your happy days in high school. During the past few months we have tried to pick out outstanding events of the year to make this a perfect anniversary gift. For their tireless devotion we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our advisors, Mr. Witter and Mrs. Weil, our editor-in-chief, Paul Bennett, our literary editor, Betsy Gaylord, our business manager, Clark Depewp our art editor, Betty Galekp and our sports editors, Joy Waugh and Howard Haff. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to work with the staff and with all the people whose help has made it possible for us to present this, our yearbook. Bruce Miles Publicity and sales We did it, and we're gladI 4 5.3 Clarence Sebring- ExcelIing in aIl. The Class of i959 feels greatly honored to have the privilege of dedicating this year's Highlander to Clarence Sebring. The color- ful fountain for the Junior Prom, the backdrop for the Junior Play, the porch for the Senior Play, all were direct results of Clarence's skill and ingenuity. His conscientious devotion to our class, and the school, insures him a place in our hearts and in our minds, when- ever we think of Dundee Central. 5 QI- fiflllfy Mrs. Willis, Miss Long- well, Mrs. McConnell, Mrs. Ieuop, Mrs. Har- vey, Miss Price, Mrs. Humphreys. Mr, Burt, Mr. Calvin, Mr. Youngman, Mr, Goodrich, Mr. Drehmer, Mr, Witter, Mr. Grey- back, Mr, Clark, Mr, Ossont, Mr. Anderson, Mr, Moskal W senior hisiory The class of 1959 has had the distinction of being both the largest and the most active class in the history of Dundee Central School. Despite our greenness as fresh men, we were able to present quite a creditable variety show, starring Charles Mc- Cann as Liberace, with Clark Depew, Charlieilonsberger, Paul Bennett, and other bright stars. A new sophomore, Connie Huber, prodded us into selling Dundee pins at basketball games, and our minstrel show of the same year was a smashing success. In addition to such money-raising projects in our Junior year, as paper sales, Christmas cards, and the Prom, we presented Jumpin' Jupiter as the Junior play. Anyone who saw this play will never forget Oscar, Guilda, Molly, and the other zany characters represented by equally zany Juniors. This year we had great luck with the magazine and ice cream sales, the spaghet- ti supper, the Ball, and last, but not least, the play Seventeen, by Booth Tarking ton. Contrary to all pessimistic expectations, we did eam enough money to go to Washington, and everyone had a superb time. The Junior-Senior picnic, Baccalau- reate, and Commencement will mark for us the end of thirteen of the happiest, most constructive years of our lives. Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Sara Drehmer, we have increased our treasury through the paper sales. In October, we sold Christmas cards, surpassing our original goal. With pride and admiration, we displayed our class rings in November. Different from previous class rings, ours have a new and more modern design. Following a successful Christmas party, we proceeded with a roller-skating party and plans for our Junior play, A Little Honey. Will we ever forget Kae MacDer- mid and her iumping frog, Pegasus, and lively Grandmother Thornton portrayed by Clara Brown? Another of our money-making schemes was a new idea for Dundee. This was our sale of notepaper with a sketch of our Alma Mater on the front. Our Junior Prom is next on the agenda and will crown the events of the year. The class of i960 has been successful only because of their co-operation and interest. We have sincere faith that next year will be as rewarding and enioyable as this year has been, and our great est desire and ambition to become the honored seniors will come true. The Freshmen, the youngest class in high school, had a Christmas party which was a great success. Now they are looking forward to their year-end picnic at which they hope to have even more fun. The Sophomores also had a Christmas party. Showing their originality they intro- duced two new events this year, a Valentine's party and a Soph Car Wash. The soph- omores presented an excellent assembly which was written and directed by its mem- bers. Again this year, the sophomores sold shakers at the basketball games. The Juniors ordered their rings as soon as possible in the fall and went around proudly displaying them in November. They conducted a very successful Christmas Card sale and patiently carried on their paper sales. Now hard at work on their Jun- ior Play, A Little Honey, which will be presented shortly after Easter vacation, they are also planning for the Junior Prom. The largest Senior Class in the history of Dundee Central School began the school year with a very successful presentation of Booth Tarkington's Seventeen. More money than ever before has been added to the treasury by this year's ice-cream sales and candy sales. A goal for magazines sales set far above that of previous years was reached and surpassed by this ambitious group of senior super salesmen. Some En- chanted Evening was the theme ofa most enjoyable Senior Ball held during Christ- mas vacation---it was well attended by both students in high school and college. Now all that lies ahead are the two most important events of a high school student's life---the Washington trip and graduation. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Anderson, our class advisor, without whose pa- tience and guidance our Junior and Senior years could not have been nearly so suc- cessful . We took advantage of the warm weather in the fall by starting off with a sport fairly new to us. . .hockey. Although this is only the second year we've played this growing favorite, it is evident that we have mastered the skills so necessary for a good game. We left the cracking of hockey sticks and bruising of shins to retire to the gym- nasium for the winter. The first sport encountered here was basketball, a long- standing favorite among D.C.S. girls. We had lots of action in basketball this year, for after completing basic skills, we engaged in furious practice to ready ourselves for the playdays with Penn Yan, Trumansburg, and Odessa. After four winter months of basketball, we were ready for the return of spring--- and volleyball. There were several playdays in this sport also. Other activities on the agenda for i958-'59 are apparatus and softball, both of which are designed to develop quick, agile bodies. A new organization started in the girls' sports program was the Girls' Athletic Association, known as the G .A.A. This group is composed of girls selected from each gym class, and is held responsible for equipment and the planning of playdays. We are exceptionally proud of the cheerleaders this year for their tireless efforts and accomplishments. The number of girls in the squad was changed from five to six. Evidently, this change brought the girls luck, for when they competed against other cheerleading squads in Rochester, the J.V.'s brought home the third place trophy. Congratulations, girls, on the victory and best wishes for next year. Joy Waugh 44 iunior high cheerleaders LEFT TO RIGHT: N,WenZ, F.Andrews, S,Pe1-ry, C.Beers, S. In the spring of 1958 the Scotsmen captured the Class B Section V, Baseball Championship fthe first sec- tional win for Dundee since its founding in 1939l,and in both 1958-1959 the Scotsmen were a- warded the sportsmanship trophy. ln track, football, and basketball the Scotsmen also held their heads high . TRACK Coach Ellie Fowler tossed out a superb track team last year. They placed next to Odessa in the league track meet. Agile Phil Davis set a new broad iump record of 18 feet 11 V2 inches, while his teammate Ed Ferry cracked the old high iump mark with a leap of 5 feet 6 3f4 inches. At the Brighton Relays in Rochester the mile medley team of Phil Davis, Jim Davis, Jack Fowler, and Allan Depew placed first, and were awarded individual trophies. FOOTBALL This fall Dundee produced a potent football eight which finished with a 2-2-2 record. From this outstanding squad, Ron Hall, Norm Hansen, and Corte Spencer were chosen to the Finger Lakes All-Star Team. Next year Dundee will play Eleven Man football. BASEBALL In baseball last year Dundee hit the jackpot, and won the Class B Section V Baseball Champion- ship. On the road to stardom the Scotsmen consecutively rolled over T-burg, the Finger Lakes Champs, Ovid, T-burg again, and Odessa before nipping Phelps, in the Class B quarter finals, Red Creed Q6-01 in the semi-finals, and Holley C3-01 in the grand finals at Rochester's beautiful Red Wing Stadium. BASKETBALL In the fast-moving and popular sport of basketball the Dundee Varsity under rookie coach Mr. Calvin ended with an 8-7 record while Coach Drehmer's iayvees walked off with the Junior Var- sity Championship with a dazzling 13-2 count. Next year the varsity should be very strong. Re- turning will be standout guard Phil Davis as well as Jack Cronin, Nelson Strait, Dick Bradley, Ro- land Lyle, and Tam York. Sophamores Depew, Pierce, and Summerson should add balance to the club. SPORTSMANSHIP Lakes Region League D. P. Norton Sportsmanship Award, the highest award the league can pre- sent, has for 1958-1959 been directed to the Dundee Scotsmen. This is an extremely great honor to our school, and is a tribute to the basketball players and Dundee fans for their outstanding sportsman- ship.
