P HOWARD SPAIN The staff of the 1955 Transitional Cardunal affectionately dedicates this booli to the memory of a man who was a loyal friend, an inspiring teacher, and a great coach on this campus for 28 years. l-lis passing, lune lU, WSJ, has been one of the most difficult of a series of transitions which time and circumstance have brought to school and community, but his memory will be an inspiration for generations of students and faculty yet to come Cn the evening of February lb, l95l, at the last basketball game of the season, a grateful school and community, gathered in the auditorium for Nlrlowdy Spain Night, presented Mr, and Mrs. Spain with felicitations and congratulatory gifts appreciative of their 25 years of outstanding service to DCHS, and Mr. Spain then summed up his own philosophy in a few words which we deem appropriate for permanent inscription here: t'lt is often said that we play the boys too hard, That is not true We do have the boys play as hard as then can, but that is only because one must play hard to be a good American, and we are always conscious of building good American citizens. During half-time ceremonies at the Dundeebycamore football game, November 5, l954, Ralph lvfclienziefpresident of the Board of Educatione read a resolution officially naming the battle ground of so many of l-lowdffs teams 'Spain Field, and Richard Beverly, president of the Dundee Township Lions Club, introduced Ervin Deuchler, chairman of the Howdy Spain memo- rial Fund, who told of plans for a permanent building and markers to be erected on the field in l-lowdy's memory.
