Our pioneers however, included a goodly number of Auld Scotia's sons and daughters. They began to arrive by families before the lndians had left the settlement, and they have continued one of our staunchest, sturdiest, thriftiest, most prosperous, and responsible elements of population Alexander Gardiner, a young Scot working on Spring Mills, the first local business enter prise, named the original Dundee settlement-a half-dozen or so straggling roads and cabins on the West Main street hill crest, laid out for the Oatmans, Deweese and Shields Hoosiers from the Old Dominion, in l836. ln a lottery, he drew the slip which gave him this privilege on occasion of the raising of the Oatman Tavern on the site of the present Methodist church, and bestowed upon the bare little hamlet the name of his native town Dundee The names Dempster, Crichton, Creighton, Mitchell, Todd, Wier, Grant, Campbell Archi bald, Binnie, Allison, McKendrick, McNeil, Rankin, Howie, Duff, McAllister, Cook Cochrane Eggleston, Ferguson, Thompson, Griffith, Alston, Stewart, and others have been long familiar here. William Hill, a scholarly Scot whose orchard evolved in time into our famous evergreen nurseries, in later years became one of Allan Pinkerton's ghost writers. Pinkerton the world famous detective, had a cooper shop here on the hill crest above the present west village hall from l843 to l848. Here on an island in the Fox he spied out the cache of counterfeiters and horse thieves, eventually sealing his professional fate. Pinkerton and his then-famous friend, General George McClure fan lrishmanl labored here together with his fellow Scots in the Abolitionist cause. ln the Pinkerton cooper shop and in the barns and homes of the Scotch farmers, many fugitive slaves were hidden or ern ployed on their way to Canada and freedom. The first local post office, McClure's Grove was in his cabin on the present McGraw property, Dempsters, Mitchells, Binnies and Keelers, all inter-related, have given a number of out standing teachers to our local schools. fames Keeler, father of Miss Katherine Keeler who taught here 44 years, was a native of Dundee, Scotland. So was William Cameron a later resident, a relative of the Reid family. Amanda Cochrane and a Mr. Stewart, our earliest teachers, were Scots. Most of these Scots were Lowlanclers, spinners and weavers who had been thrown out of employment when the power loom and spindle replaced the cottage industries in Scot land. lohn Wier originated the famous broche pattern for the shawl-makers in his native Paisley. A number of the Scots came first to Chicago to work on the Illinois-Michigan Canal These were hard-working people, they saved scrupulously, lived a somewhat exclusive and clannish life, but amassed valuable land-holdings and fortunes and gave the community a record for sobriety and thrift. Their impress, by virtue of this claim to our gratitude and by identification of our township with a name so dear to them, has been of definite enduring importance in our community. 6
