UN OR HIGH OOTBALL Football is a popular part ot the junior high school athletic program, which is unique in that it meets the needs ot the boys according to their weights. The objectives ot the program are to provide an opportunity for the boys in these grades to participate in physical contact work in a supervised program, to develop skills and abilities, and to gain knowledge of the game tor high school play. Each boy has a physical examination and takes out insurance. He is then fully equipped with pants, jersey, shoulder pads, hip pads, and headgear. The boys are placed in two groups, depending upon their weight. They partici- pate in drills designed to teach blocking, tackling, running, passing, punting, side- stepping, pivoting, recovering fumbles, and carrying the ball properly. Enthusiasm is directed toward six scheduled games for each squad. The light- weights play six-minute quarters, and the heavyweights eight-minute quarters. 60 R ,gm fy its Front row, left to right: Marlene Redmer, Iudy Kalsow, Marie Martini, Marcy Parrucci. Only six games Were played and the Cards Won three and lost three. Winning from Belvidere Was one ot the highlights ot the season. Norm Brettschneider not only pitched Well all season, but was also the leading hitter. Other lads who played Well during the season Were: Dale Zange at third base and catcher, Don Planck and lack Dobler, the latter two doing a bang-up job ot in- field play. Roy Schuring alternated at the pitching chores with Norm and did a very good bit ot Work. The lack of hitting was what hurt the team most. The prospects for 1953 look much better.
