These four freedoms he defined as free- dom from want, freedom from fear, free- dom of Worship, and freedom of speech, President Roosevelt implied that these freedoms could be made possible for all people everywhere if Hitler and Mussolini were defeated. I There are, of course, many freedoms that make up our American heritage to- day-all of those mentioned in our Dec- laration of lndependence, The Constitution and its first lO amendments called the Bill of Rights, freedom of private enterprise, and in general, the Freedom To Be Free, but the Cardunal Staff feels that the above-mentioned 4 Freedoms, plus one more that is very important to us as stu- dents, Freedom Of Education, form a large part of the basis for our struggle for the 'American Way today, and, there- fore, we dedicate our book to a happy and successful victory for our country and the other democracies of the World in their titanic struggle against Russian Commu- nism, and we pledge ourselves to uphold the ideals of these 5 Freedoms and all our other traditional American freedoms as We take our part as citizens in the time to come. -Z, Q4 W FREEDOM OF WORSHIP Reprinted by special permission oi THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. Copyright 1943 by the Curtis Publishing Company. BOARD OF EDUCATICN The Cardunal staff believes that a board of educa- tion exemplifies several American freedoms at Work. No national bureaucracy appoints personnel or dictates policy. After freedom of discussion, freedom of speech, and freedom of ballot, elected representatives of the people, at local level, select the personnel, fix revenue and expenses, and determine school policy. l.z'll in rigfllf Ullu Stiivlilvr, lilginz Iuliu l.niing, llgiliipsliiwz Iulm Brock, SCCl'L'lLlI'XZ C.il'pcIilcI'svillc2 Monrrlc A, 'IRwim.1ii1I. l7l'l'5l4lCI1l,i'XlQlUI1L1lllI11fllllfk Mr-lim. llaimpsliirv: lirvin luis, Ilunclccz lfrwin Dcuclilcr, Dilmlu-. SENIORS CF 1952 Back in September, l948, l32 freshmen invaded the corridors of Dundee High School with a clatter and a clang and soon proceeded to elect Pancho Morales, president, Lois Suchy, vice- president, Carol Berkley, secretary, and Kenneth Lange, treasurer. Our advisors were Miss Pergande, Mr. Green, Mr. Quinn, and Miss Bell. Our Sophomore year was a good year excluding football. We had a power house in basketball, Dale Rathjen was elected as president, with Ben lmhoff as vice-president, Norm Brettschneider as secretary, and lo Ann Melahn as treasurer, That year the student council decided to have a homecoming parade with a prize for the best float. We had the most con- sistent class, for we took second prize three years in a row. CEven though two years we should have had firstll As luniors, and with lim Frost as president, lerry Lange, vice-president, Bob Allen, secretaryp and loyce Schuhr as treasurer, we made school history, for we were the first class to have the junior-senior prom outside of school. That was also the year we showed our great dramatic talent in Mother Was A Freshman. ln this final year, of school life, we voted for George Dusold as president, Dale Zange, vice- president, Richard Bitt, secretary, and Ben lmhoff, treasurer. Our advisors were Miss Pergande, Miss Witmore, Mr. Gerald Green, and Mr. Hardy. For the third consecutive year, we took second place in the float contest at homecoming. Our Senior-lunior party and the Senior play, Stage Door by Kaufman and Ferber, were our last great projects. ln a few weeks, we will say farewell to D. C. H. S. and enter into a new adventure, l4 x N l N, .1 . .N . in Q X .5 ? si 4 , , ,la ww, .,,.. ae ' l .111 1 A' .. Tom Walrnur, Vicc-l'rvsiclt-ntg Mr. Sclim-irlcr, Aflvimrg Gloria Gmac, Secretary: Mr, Minnc, Arlviwr. ln September, l949, 87 little eager beavers made up the first eighth grade to go to Dundee Community High School, and immediately got into the swing of things by electing Bob Linde- mann, president, Noretta Kostner, vice-president, Barbara Buffing, secretaryg and Charles Miller, treasurer. ln November we had our first big rootin' tootin' party--a square dancemat which every- one had a wonderful time, Next year We elected Bob Lindemann as our guiding light again, and voted Barbara Ruffing, vice-president, Nancy Zimmerman, secretary, and Deloris Dehmlow, treasurer. Being freshies, our boys had a chance to assist the sophomores with the Little Seven frosh-soph title. Having enjoyed square dancing so much at our eighth-grade party the year before, we repeated the same type of entertainment at our freshman party. Everyone was more acquainted that year as could be told by the increase in couples attending. Our sophomore year was comparatively calm as far as parties were concerned, but that year we were led by a group of girl politicians Lorraine Taylor was president, and Lois Letto, Marilyn Kleinschmidt, and Susan Shoellhorn filled the remaining offices. The fellows boiled the rest of the year. As the year raced on, we became more interested in basketball, for sophomore boys always have better chances to make the frosh-soph team. At last we are juniors-upper classmen! Roy Schuring is our president, Tom Warner, vice-president, Gloria Grace, secretary, and lack Dobler, treasurer. Being juniors, we were given the privilege of publishing this book which we hope every- one will enjoy in the years to come, We were also faced with the problem of giving the junior-senior prom which was held at the very attractive ltasca Country club. The evening will always be remembered by the juniors for it was our first real prom. Our class play, Ladies ln Retirement, was an exciting performance. Next year we are hoping that more of the boys will try out for the senior class play. See you next year when we reign high as seniors. 22 Howard Alzrens George Burgess Rhona Dolvler Roger f1l1IlFl'50ll Phyllis Collvorn C lm:-I es Barzelf Donna Doyle Gerry Cozfghlin Don Blodgezt Ronnie Ebel Deloris Den nzlouf Ioan Bolger Mauri Dilib lim Borelzardt S lzirley Egger! We present an honor ribbon, and a superehonor ribbon to all students whose grades have merited such distinction at the end of each six-Week term, in an award program before the entire school assembly. Citizenship awards are made each semester. The scholastic averages are used to determine the highest three ranking scholars in the class, whose pictures appear on this page, and in combination with citizenship grades made each six-weeks throughout the first three and onefhalf years, these grades are used as a basis for membership in the local chapter of the National Honor Society, according to the following rules laid down by the national organization: members are those seniors who are in the upper fifteen percent of their class in citizenship, and who are also in the upper twenty-five percent in scholarship. A key is presented by the Student Council to each student who merits membership. The student council is a democratic student organization which enables the whole student body to voice their opinions through representatives they elect in home groups. Each class is divided into tour home groups, The freshmen have one representative per home group. The seventh and eighth grades are represented by two students elected from each class. Sophomores through seniors, elect two per home group. A council member considers it an honor and a privilege to be a part ot this organization. He should possess qualities ot leadership and traits which enable him to accept and fulfill responsibilities. lt is also very important that he set an example tor others to follow, keeping in mind the principles ot good citizenship on Which the council is based. One ot the jobs ot our Council is to sponsor the student activity ticket which is available to all students and enables them to take part in the drawing ot tournament tickets. The council undertakes the financial responsibility tor honor roll ribbons and speakers, and twelve lull-length assembly programs ot outside talent presented through the year. lt also operates food and beverage concessions during the school noon hour and during athletic contests. Early in the tall it sponsored the tourth annual Homecoming with Howard Diercks serving as chairman. A snake dance preceded the Homecoming game which was followed by a dance. lo Ann Melahn reigned as queen, with Carol Berkley and Rita Dells attending. Several projects, including a Red Cross drive and a combined Polio and Tuberculosis drive were undertaken very successfully. ln lanuary we sponsored a Holiday dance which had been postponed during the Christmas Holidays due to bad Weather conditions. Serving as otticers this year were Robert Allen, president, Mabel Hollins, vice-presidentg Evelyn Larsen, treasurer, and George Price, secretary. 38 M9 if fBi,?iS+ QQ F. H. A. and F. F. A. Among its activities are assembly programs, concerts at Algonquin, and participation in the music contests and in the Annual Band Festival. Mr. Harold Green directs both the Senior l-ligh Orchestra and Band. The Orchestra provided accompaniment for the highly successful musical comedy 'lFinian's Rainbow, and played for other dramatic productions. Other appear- ances included the Music and Drama Festival, Baccalaureate, and Com- mencement. The past year was a Bed-Letter one for the Senior Band, having brought a State first-division rating, the first in the history of the school, and a bright, attractive new set of uniforms for the 75-piece band and seven majorettes. The busy year included playing at all home football and basketball games, the Annual District 300 Band Festival, Music and Drama Festival, Music Contests, and parades. The squad was divided into two teams, lightweight and heavyweight. The lightweight team was led by Don Sharp, their captain, and coached by Mr. de Lacey. They played Crystal Lake, Sycamore and Belvidere. Belvidere was the only opponent that was beaten by Dundee. Tom King and Herman Vanderplow proved to be the most outstanding players of that game. The squad had, as its managers, Bob Hoyt and Leonard Frost. The heavyweight team played a total ot tour games, winning two of them, losing one, and tying one. The teams played were Crystal Lake, Belvidere, Woodstock and Sycamore. Dick Suchy and Merle lohnson were given the honor ot being named co-captains of the team. The squad was coached by Mr. Finke. lack Eatinger proved to be the most valuable player. Ot course, without the help ot the other members of the teams, these boys would never have achieved such honors. 1 1 1 111 All 'l'f1111 King, flL'I'I'y llopp, lJcm.1lml llzlilcy, l74'll1llN Mill'lHll, llc1'r11:111 Vxliizlm-rploxv, lillllllll' it mul 11111 Holi llfiyl,1114111.1gL'1',jr1l111 If1l111so11, llgivt- Rift, WVi11lit'lcl Rnulvy, Miko Guolu, Bob ll.lt'gc'l', jr., IT Mnuxm ITNUH V1 lllll l..ll'SfJI1, llzlxt- Mclllungg, Mr. llllllir, co11cl1. pllfll-lYf mu'i Glenn l,lilllCli, lirc-tl SlIl1l!NOIl,lI'., llclims ltlxx mls Don Sllllll fllllllk Aingy, llllllll Mgirkus, rlltllll l'.1l1v:11'cls, lim Mzirkt-l, llcrlu lbifgclrick, llill Inculvi, lfcl Mglzis, A 1111 011111 H111 1 lulimtfm, Holi llolmlur, Mt-rlill Itllllhllll, lL'I'UIllL' Miclizllski, Iulin Ulwn, llilll llzu'x'c'l, lilll lllLlL,llL Irpsmi, jr., luck K'.'llL'I'Il1ill'1, Ilick Suchy, Icrry Linclscy. - l 4 ESU Bottom row, left zo right: Iim Frost, Ralph Rattray, Ray Schuring, Sam Brettschneicler, Fred Schuring, Roy Schurin Dick Bolger. VARSITY BASKETBALL The varsity basketball squad, though of small size according to modern basketball standards, downed all conference oppo- sition for a clear crown and a 14-win, 0-loss record. The Cards made up for lack of size with shooting accuracy and aggres- siveness, although size was their undoing in the tournament where they were upset by a tall Elgin team. The total season's record, an impressive one, was comprised of 21 wins and four losses, including the tournament. The season was marked with the records of Bob Allen who hit a 21.7 points-per-game clip including the. tournament games. Hitting 300 points in conference games, Bob has the honor of being one of the three in conference history, all from Dundee, to hit 300 points and over. The other two were lim Schuldt and Duke Beth. Both Bob and Bill Lindemann were voted members of the all-conference first five. Bob Allen established a new school record for percentage of free throws made-7l3fL. The old record of 7ll'X, was set by lim Schuldt in l948. The following players were close behind him: Bob Brettschneider 699 '70, Bill Lindemann 0942, lerry Lange 6602, Bay Schuring 007 70. Thus Bob Allen is the l952 winner of the Smith-Bausch Free-throw trophy. Also, by team vote Bob Allen was captain of the team, and was also voted the lohn Schumacher award as the most valuable player. Sl Y W 1 Q r N a . fil- ' . Howdy Spain, bounced, fought, and prayed their way to a clear conference crown and a 2l-win, 2-loss record for the year. Their conference 14-win, U-loss record is the first one since l946-something to be proud ot. The stream ol Cardlet wins was broken only by the Barrington hammer, which pounded the Frosh-Soph for their only two losses. lack Beth led the season's scoring with 248 points, averaging lU.9 points per game, but lohn Tarnow, starting play late, averaged 15.2 points per his lU games. Donald Lagerstrom connected from forward spot with an average of 9.7 per game, totaling 212 points for second honors. lack Beth was voted honorary captain of the team, while Bob Faber was voted the team's most valuable player by his teammates. Chuck Schur- ing and lack Beth were voted into an all-conference team berth and lohn Tarnow received honorable mention. These records, although not spectacular, were part of a well coordinated offensive team. This year's team will certainly be noted in Dundee's basketball history. And those who participated in its making will truly remember the lessons, the learnings, and the good coaching as they go on to do better things with the varsity. Bollom row left to ugh!
