DEP RTME T The Social Studies Department includes such intriguing subiects as Ge- ography, Civics, World History, American History, and Problems in Ameri- can Democracy. This year a new course was introduced - Humanities. Fletcher is fortunate to have this class in its curriculum as the course is only offered in a few Southern high schools. The history classes help the student to understand past problems while P.A.D. brings us up to date with a study of the main dilemmas in America today-Russia and the South. Civics and Geography offer important information on the eco- nomic-political situation of the world. Thus we can say safely that Fletcher's students, armed with knowledge of history, present and past, are better equipped to face the future. MR. WOFFORD O. WILLIAMS . . . B.S., Citodel. BU I ESS EDUCATIO , BUSINESS EDUCATION: The first thing a visitor at Fletcher might notice would be the roar coming from the Typing room. Until one has heard it, the noise coming from thirty typewriters working at one time cannot be imagined. The nice thing about typing and shorthand is that they can be put to use almost at once. Classnotes can be taken easier and more ac- curately with a knowledge of shorthand. Grades come up on themes since tired teachers consider the neatness of typed copy a virtue. MUSIC: Students are introduced to the gentle art of music early at Fletcher and many continue to enioy it in Senior High by ioining the band or chorus. ART: Many talented young abstractionists receive their first training in Fletcher's imaginatively decorated art rooms. MR. O F BECKHAM . , .
