Most students accept this basic axiom and settle down to their work with a grim resignation. However, somewhere between eighth grade math and second year algebra, many become involved and in- terested in perfectly balanced equations. This interest drags them through second year algebra and on into geometry, where they learn that everything is not always as it appears. The students determined- ly study their trig, learning many new formulas and puzzling out such statements as The sign of the sine is the same as the sign of the secantf' This year, there is a new, advanced math class for those who desire to undertake calculus, solid geometry, and a review of algebra. Miss Higginson, Tommy Carithers, and Cheryl Anthony delve into the difficulties of Geometry. 20

DEP RTME T Some of Fletcher's ambitious freshmen are entering their first year of a language with high aims. This year, third year courses in both Latin and Spanish have been added to Fletcher's list. The students seem to be enioying their education. In fact, our third year Latin classes are using a book normally intended for fourth year students. The other third year class has become quite adept at conversational Spanish. The French classes have something new, too. The students have been perfecting their pronunciation by using tape-recorders with ear-phones. Perhaps the French exchange student who is coming to Fletcher next year has offered the classes some inspiration also. Next year they can practice their mastery of the French language on him.
