We Come . . . A New School brings new compan- gulfed in the hustle bustle of a very happy, some- onship, the excitement of games, the careful or care- times sad environment. After learning ones way ree studying for exams. These are iust a few of the around the maze of halls we realize, with respect, elements we meet upon entering this new world. Per- there are five grades above us. You wonder how it taps, at first, a strong feeling of aloneness is ours, will be when you, only a seventh grader now, will but as time unwinds itself we soon find ourselves en- take your place as a senior. The vivacious cheerleaders, the luring posters in the halls and the enthusiastic spirit at the pep rallies are all the things which go together in preceding the big game. Then the game itself, who- ever the victor may be it was still the most fun you've had since you can remember. A football game, this is just one ofthe things that you will remem- ber most after you've grad- uated from your present Alma Mater. Perhaps the many parties or dances will be in your favorite mem- ories or maybe even the many quarts of midnight oil you .used up. Only, though, as time leads the procession of life will the answers come and only as you reach the seat of adult- hood will you look back on your years at dear old D. U. Drawing a sketch of Miss War- ren with words is an easy task, yet a difficult one. Easy, because there are so many admirable things to say about her, and dif- ficult because it would take a masterpiece, rather than this simple sketch to do justice to all of her outstanding qualities. Miss Warren teaches typing and bookkeeping here at Flet- cher, and is a whiz at both. She is respected highly by the students, not only for her teach- ing, but for her interest in other school activities which are above and beyond her call of duty. Two of her main responsibilities are those of sharing the co-spon- sorship of this, our school an- nual, with Miss Hinkle'and order- ing our class rings each fall and spring. The few moments she is able to get away from the hub-bub of school life are spent perfect- ing that golf swing or working vigorously to beautify the land- scape of her home. She offers her talent, photography, to the annual. She looks as though she enjoys her work, FO YOU, MISS WARREN, THE 1960 SENATOR Is there anything she doesn'1 do well? 0 Q Q XZ J Z QQQ? ,Z 2 S 0W2ZRT92Zq2Q Af Q02 346314 A .iff 51531 C523 f Q Lx -1235? wx Q 5522 'wgjfq 9 ,Q- -, 7 1 m.,,,,V, Awww V' 2' v f- . This is especial- ly true of this year of school, i959-60. For one thing it is going by so fast-going like sixty-as we used to say when I was in High School. Soon it will be an- other time, a later time, and you will be looking at this annual, at the faces of friends, at the rooms and walks and windows that are only pictures. I2 It will all seem far away and unreal. That is the trouble with memories, they are iust as unreal as the shadows on paper that make a photograph. But right now, those same faces, the walks and glimpses from win- dows are real. You naturally look to the future and long for holidays and adulthood. But grasp at what is now and this moment too. However, to their delight and dismay, they discover such niceties as The Highway- man and Evangeline. Freshmen and Sophomores find Great Expectations and Julius Caesar in their introduction to literature. VVhat! Grammar, again? cry the disgusted upperclassmen. We had that in Junior High! To spice up the year-in, year-out grammar routine, the Seniors have color films of Hamlet, and Shakespeare, marvel of'marvels, suddenly comes to life. Juniors, forced to be creative, sometimes surprise even themselves with the verloosity of their themes. Universal vocabulary tests, frequent book-reports, and occasional short stories make for busy Juniors and Seniors. The Advanced English class enioys Mr. Richardson's sketch of L d B or yron's life. This year, third year courses in both Latin and Spanish have been added to Fletcher's list. The students seem to be enioying their education. In fact, our third year Latin classes are using a book normally intended for fourth year students. The other third year class has become quite adept at conversational Spanish. The French classes have something new, too. The students have been perfecting their pronunciation by using tape-recorders with ear-phones. Perhaps the French exchange student who is coming to Fletcher next year has offered the classes some inspiration also. Next year they can practice their mastery of the French language on him. Most students accept this basic axiom and settle down to their work with a grim resignation. However, somewhere between eighth grade math and second year algebra, many become involved and in- terested in perfectly balanced equations. This interest drags them through second year algebra and on into geometry, where they learn that everything is not always as it appears. The students determined- ly study their trig, learning many new formulas and puzzling out such statements as The sign of the sine is the same as the sign of the secantf' This year, there is a new, advanced math class for those who desire to undertake calculus, solid geometry, and a review of algebra. Anguished cries of I know that wasn't ten seconds, Mr. Morper! emanate from the Chemistry room during the slide- rule test. You'd think that General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, and Physics would be enough tor anyone. However, this is not the case at Fletcher, where students turn out in the mornings and after- noons to take such extracurricular classes as Anatomy, Organic Chemistry, and Bacteriology. The students receive no credit tor taking these courses- all they gain is knowledge. The new Know organizedj mathematics and sciences building offers the classes plenty ot room tor complex Biology and Chemistry experiments. I Every woman has a man in her life. 23 University. MR. DEP RTME T The Social Studies Department includes such intriguing subiects as Ge- ography, Civics, World History, American History, and Problems in Ameri- can Democracy. This year a new course was introduced - Humanities. Fletcher is fortunate to have this class in its curriculum as the course is only offered in a few Southern high schools. The history classes help the student to understand past problems while P.A.D. brings us up to date with a study of the main dilemmas in America today-Russia and the South. Civics and Geography offer important information on the eco- nomic-political situation of the world. Thus we can say safely that Fletcher's students, armed with knowledge of history, present and past, are better equipped to face the future. MR. WOFFORD O. WILLIAMS . . . B.S., Citodel. BU I ESS EDUCATIO , BUSINESS EDUCATION: The first thing a visitor at Fletcher might notice would be the roar coming from the Typing room. Until one has heard it, the noise coming from thirty typewriters working at one time cannot be imagined. The nice thing about typing and shorthand is that they can be put to use almost at once. Classnotes can be taken easier and more ac- curately with a knowledge of shorthand. Grades come up on themes since tired teachers consider the neatness of typed copy a virtue. MUSIC: Students are introduced to the gentle art of music early at Fletcher and many continue to enioy it in Senior High by ioining the band or chorus. ART: Many talented young abstractionists receive their first training in Fletcher's imaginatively decorated art rooms. MR. O F BECKHAM . , . Still en- ioying the newness of the Home Ec. room, the cooking classes whipped up such delicacies as egg-a-la-golden- rod. Other proiects of this year included a unit on child care which called for a real live baby and a table setting contest. Once upon a time, even our Teachers were teenagers. They had their own fads and styles, perhaps many of which were as ridiculous and as laughed at as ours are to- day. As years pass, trends change but not to the extent of a complete new appearance. Many times the teens are quoted as saying, But that was in the olden days. I sup- pose vve don't think they're quite so old though, because some of the fads of the past keep returning. Take the popular songs of today tor instance. We iazz them up with the cool singers ot today, but they're still those good ole tunes ot yesteryear. We may look back curiously at the olden days, but keep this in mind . . . Aren't they? This year's Staff decided to spice up the Old Senator a bit with this new and outstanding feature, The Beauty Section. This sec- tion had its beginning in room 211, the annual room, when the boys of the staff chose whom they believed to be the nine prettiest girls in the Senior Class. Following these selections, Deane's Studio provided the very important portraits which soon found their way to the singing star, Pat Boone, to be iudged. For instance: The time we couldn't do our homework because we were out looking for a raccoon coat to fit Coach Knuthg the time we had to ex- plain to the Student Council that we didn't mean to blow up their Spirit Jugg the times we went to town for ads in Dezmond's E. Bird and re- turned alive, and the time we stayed up until five in the morning and went to school the next day. These are a few of the eleventy billion such experiences we've had. We would like to thank you, Mr. Deane, for your superior photogra- phy. We realize that good pictures are essential in editing a good an- nual.
